WHAT YACHT SHOULD YOU BUY???

- This video is inspired by a viewer who asked me what combination of shipyards may build the perfect yacht. I believe that the designer is often almost as important as the builder if you are building a custom yacht!

Great story at the end about Lürssen. That alone would make me want to buy from them.
I second that.
David I could listen to your stories all day. Thanks
Love this video. An insight into yacht building that most of us would never get to see.
Love the idea of this question! I might never be able to own a yacht, but dreaming is allways allowed!
The greatness of being human is the ability to achieve anything in the world simply by wanting it enough to achieve it.
maybe charter for a weekend
Excellent teachings, David. Thanks!
I would love to see a video about the difference in gross tonnage and how the standards differ.
Love your insight and depth of knowledge in the Business of yachts, your topics are majorly-informative to say the least! Many many thanks!
Thank you very much for this fascinating look into the ultimate elegance industry and giving us years of insider wisdom.
I have to say, I may never be able to buy a yacht. But I do love the designs on some of these yachts.
Thank you, David. I always appreciate the immense volume of information at your disposal and how clearly you explain it.
That was most interesting David. Thank you.
I find choosing a yacht such a dilemma, so this video should help me out.
Hoard enough bitcoin and you too can prepare :-)
@@MichaelSiegleThe same could be said if I hoard enough gold.
that was a great vlog, really enjoyed that, great stories
Hi . LOVE your vlogs & passion for yachts . Always great quality & content . Thank you for sharing your in depth knowledge & importance of finding the right balance of quality, cost & people . Much respect ! Mark (Toronto) 🌊🌊🌊
Loving the new content, thank you!
Thank you for sharing this wealth of information, David.
Thank you so much for distinguishing the two different areas of yacht building. The companies you have mentioned for both the production / custom side of the industry are building some amazing products, however that said I never could understand why the production side of the house, in my humble opinion only, never appeals to me as much as the custom route. Now at least I understand my own reasoning why I prefer some builders and building methods over the other. Thanks you so much for helping me figure that out. Best of luck to you and your staff. (:
I love the videos that showcase yachts, but these type of videos will save people thousands of dollars and hours of time because you share your knowledge and expertise with us. Thank you for being here in this space. I am ALWAYS excited to get a notification that you have uploaded a video!
Hi David. I agree Peter Lürssen is so down to earth, the live feeds were excellent. Bits and pieces from several designs and innovations incorporated into one fantastic yacht sounds perfick. Cor D Rover designer. Silent Yachts propulsion system. Great video thanks 😊
You offered a realistic description of the price value equation in a luxury business characterized by a wide range of prices. Thank you for your insights.
Thanks so much for the insights . I've got 15 years on the ocean,
Navy , tugboats, barges , Calif. Alaska ...but no yacht exper. Very helpful .
THIS video is definitely your best one by far. No fancy camera angles and jerky movements, just clear, well presented information.
Excellent!!! 👍🏻😉
Hi David, great video. I’ve got a question about yacht toys, how common is it for yachts to carry land based vehicles on board?
Very informative. Thank you.
I am a long time follower of this channel and Here is my question for you!
Can you dig into warranty and maintenance for large yachts? Does the builder offer full warranty on the yacht including electrical, engines, furniture etc etc or each item covered under the separate warranty based on who is purchased from? Do the builder force you to get certain maintenance/check ups done yearly with them or can you get it done in another ship yard? What avoids the warranty? How long is the warranty on a large yachts? Thank you for your time and excellent videos so far.
A big thank you David, I also think that human contact is very important. 👍👍👍🙏
I loved the vid on teak substitute when you put it out and it's so important.
Love your content. It really motivates us young people to be more successful. We would appriciate it more if you can do more of go anywhere large explorer yachts , if you are cool with it ....
Seaxplorer 105 would be cool
@@joostpereira7470 agree.
I would love to see Bering on the channel too, great explorer yachts!
Hi David, I watched that video you were mentioning with Luerrsen and enjoyed it. Also some people buy production yachts and have them shipped over seas to be in different countries.
Very interesting to hear about the price difference between nations/regions. I hoped for info like this - thank you!!
I really appreciate your time and effort you team puts into these videos! Thanks 🙏🏼
Our pleasure!
Great Episode by your team Dave 👍
Amazing video!
Great and informative video!
Personally, I always thought Lurssen is the greatest and most successful super yacht builer with all the great yachts that they have built to date
I think I was right,
Greatest yachts from great company owner
Maybe that is why they are highly successful
Nice video David, thanks for sharing…. Seems the yachting good life is starting to make a home for it self on you my friend might be time for a Mediterranean fitness first program I think hahaha
I ♥️ your Channel. You do an Extremely Great Job...
When I'm Ready, I'll check you for Sure...
I have had both production and custom built yachts and both styles were exactly what I wanted at the time and what I had planned for there usage. In the end it is not so much as to which one is better, production, semi-custom or full custom but which one ticks all the boxes for you and your plans for the yacht.
Hi Dave was looking for the link around Minute 14:45.
Awesome story about Mr L.
It's like MasterClass for yachts. love this channel..
Tatiana is my favorite. I would love a 24.5m yacht which mirrors such. With the ability to park 4 of my vehicles in the hull of the boat. I have my own design. Watching different designers have helped tremendously. I can honestly say, mine is unique. My question to you is.
How do I go about contacting a designer to make my idea a reality. Someone I can pay and not be committed to any particular builder. Due to the fact I don't know everything about what is needed to build a boat of that magnitude. I'm more drawn to functionality vs luxury. This will be my home, not just a vessel of leisure. Thanks for your videos! they're far superior in comparison to everyone else I've watched. At least you don't focus on pillows all the time😂😂
I love this channel
Thanks for the video, enjoyed it
Would you consider doing an interview with a yacht designer?
The like button was touched gently / gingerly / pressed / tapped / clicked upon - BUT NOT SMASHED! Keep these chats / informative videos coming.
Great video as always David, many thanks for taking the time and effort to explain this subject with us poor land lovers. If say I order a sunseeker 131 what sort of wait is expected before you take delivery I expect like a new car there would be a waiting list so what sort of time are we talking about .once again many thanks.
Literally the best video you’ve done David. You’re a rockstar.
Great video
I'm really liking this format. Please don't give up reviewing Yachts like you've been doing but if you can keep these Q&A videos going, that would be EXTRA awesome.
Im looking for the link to that Teak replacement product and cant find it in the description. You fibber lol
Before watching - I really like the look of the Benetti BNow68 semi-custom. Elegant lines, beautiful modern interiors, a massive beach club and good crew areas.
Not so big a yacht that you'd have to book berths six months in advance, but big enough for almost any need.
After watching - yep, definitely sticking with my choice (for fantasy yacht!). Not sure that it's justifiable to pay double or more and probably wait longer to get a Feadship.
Didn't realise the prices were so different.
Not that I can afford a boat of any kind, but hey ho, nice to dream!
Enjoyed the video and the clarity of the Builders category and specialties. I'm still wondering what's going on with your other RUclips channel Yacht Builders?
another great video.
Thank you for that, now I know exactly where I'll go before buying a super Yacht.
I have been watching your Videos for a while and they are the very best. I fell in love with the Mangusta 165, it is a beautiful machine. After looking at "Serenity" I could not imagine a better interior, nice dark woods. The performance at Sea is amazing but that pointed out a question. The best range would not get you across the Atlantic. Has anyone refit a 165 with enough fuel capacity to at least do an Ireland-iceland-newfoundland crossing or is the 165 not the right sea boat for doing a crossing, performance and range do not mix well?
I wish you well in your career and look forward to more videos.
Bering has some really good boats and I am interested in the 145 they are building now
i think i need a few hundred thousand dollars first 😅
@Kong Gamer
And the income stream to maintain it (very roughly, depending on how you plan to use it, 10% of purchase cost per year).
120m - 135m Lürssen designed by Tim Heywood would be the dream. I´d maybe buy ICON280 in the meantime to ease the 4 to 5 years wait for the big baby. Keep up the good content David, cheers!
Really liked this and found it very interesting. Always nice to think that one day I’ll have this problem. A separate question for you, do you think the yachting industry is doing enough, moving fast enough or has the motivation to move in a more environmentally friendly way? Which yacht builders, both production and custom are leading the way. And which component companies (decking, toys etc) that are also doing a great job on this front?
If your interested in a company that is doing something , look at Nautistyles tour of Bering 145 being built in Turkey .It is a Hybrid powered yacht.
Honestly if I can't afford the dream then I probably shouldn't own a yacht. Better to charter the dream. Love your channel. If or when I can afford a yacht you are who I will be contacting your passion, knowledge and experience would be invaluable.
amazing thank you
I can't afford a row boat, but I'm still here watching this. That being said I would love a Bering 77.
You’ve got me spooked a bit. We are presently looking at a yacht builder in Turkey and I’m not sure I could tell good from bad. Do you ever offer consultation?
Hi Thomas, sure. Feel free to email me at David.seal@northropandjohnson.com
Would you address used boats. What to look for, maintenance concerns, refits and refreshes.
Using a filter I always search for the Aluminum hull. From there i start selecting. Favorite designers are Feadship, Heesen, OceanCo and Trinity. Now the cash.
How do you choose a captain and does a captain and crew typically come with a yacht?
Solo got sold, had my eye on Days but that’s gone, the only one that has my eye is Darnet Design project Starlight. Ideally I’d like anything over 80m, carbon fibre and hybrid 👍
Great vid, which yacht do u like the most, your opinion Tatiana or Solo which would u choose
Seems like you like Croatia a lot!!! You mentioned it a couple times recently.
Greetings from Croatia!
I want to visit Croatia very badly.
Now I want to see you interview the Lürssen guy! ASAP, please :)
Besides money, how long does it take from idea to handover to customer hands, in terms of time? Let's say for example for a yacht like Solo or a similar sized one.
I absolutely love Nuvolari Lenard design and especially the Palmer Johnson line. Once my bonus comes to be paid out I will drag you to a good wine bar and we will start to discuss yachts
Great video like always! I have a question too. Is there a certain engine manufacturer that is used or liked more then the other. It seems like MTU and Caterpillar are pretty popular over other brands.
I think MAN are also popular but to a lesser extent. My personal favorite is MTU. One of the things that drive popularity of particular engines is the availability of repair parts world wide. You do not want to break down off the coast of Tasmania and have to wait 3 weeks for a part.
@@kokomo9764 my dad owns a tanker who sails on a river, we have two MTUs of 1200 horse power running for 65000 hours now, still running like new! Very very very good engines. But we maintain them very well too.
As usual excellent content, David! I appreciate both your candor and thoughtfulness in your comments!
David you have to talk to Bearing Yachts, would be great if you talk about they yachts. Sorry for my english.
Now i really respect lurssen.. what a guy
@Yachts for sale, what about Australia? Is there any big yacht's coming from or being build down under? Thanks
I have a question is there any shipbuilding company that build yacht for lake or river cruise in length range from 10 m to 20 m. If there any possibility to also include mini kitchen, pool or jacuzzi and also fishing spot on the yacht?
I would like to ask you is Sunseeker making anymore 86 and 95 yachts? It seems like Sunseeker is putting out the 88 and the 90 which I don't like the 88 at all. So if you can please find out if the 86 and the 95 can be made if I want a new boat . I thank you so much from the USA
You forgot to mention one really fantastic builder in the Netherlands which is icon I love the work they build some fantastic yachts and I wish you would do more about them
What do you think of Artefact yacht? I love this yacht.
Here is a question for you. If you have answered this before, I am sorry I did not see or hear it. Why do yacht builders/designers, especially on the production yacht builds. Always position the seating at the aft end of the yacht facing into the cabin? When you sit in your back garden of your house you face the garden, not the house. Unless your garden is awful. So you pay £500,000-5,000,000 for a yacht. Travel to glorious places in the Med etc, to sit facing the cot pit! There are the odd one or two That swivel the back seat? If I paid big bucks for a yacht and transport to far away lands/seas. I would want to look at them.
Well, it might be worth your time to make a few videos introducing some of the designers with good examples for their interior and exterior designs.
Personally, I do not like the modern hotel feeling many interiors emanate. On the other hand, I do like some of the exterior designs that are around or seen in concept boats.
An overview of the various designers would really be helpful to those people who are thinking about a custom yacht.
What is the process of hiring you and/or your company to help with the entire Yacht build/purchase?
So, what is it about France, the UK, Spain, Ireland, and Scandinavia that makes them unsuitable for yacht building? They all had great shipbuilding industries once upon a time. Is the labour market just too hostile in those countries now?
I pray one day to own one yacht.
You did not include the link to the teak wood substitute.
Thanks, JIM
You missed the 3rd grouping for yachts, the bridge between production and custom, the semi-custom builders. Fleming, Nordhavn*, Outer Reef all fit this classification.
They have the advantage of the production builders molds, yet the interior can be customized for the buyer.
Really a blend of custom and production.
* Nordhavn can also fit into the custom yacht builder, they have done completely custom builds for clients.
I have another question, about fuel. Are there big differences in fuel prices around the world and how is refuelling done most of the times? Is it done with a boat, a truck or maybe a special jetty to refuel?
My understanding is that fuel prices can vary widely. I am certain that fuel prices in America, say Florida. are much cheaper than Gibraltar or anywhere in Europe. I am curious about fuel prices in Eastern Europe.
@@kokomo9764 yeah I think too. Insane taxes here in Europe on fuel:(
Will an yacht brand build an yacht model only once, say, a Wider 165, or they'll build the same model if someone orders? I'm really curious to know this answer...
Turkey is like Asian builders of decades ago, capable of doing wonderful work at budget pricing, however the owner needs a great project manager on site during the whole process.
At first, I was thinking I should get the Magellano 30, because it is objectively the prettiest yacht I've ever seen. But then I thought, if I'm dreaming, why not dream big, so I ended up with a Damen SeaXplorer 105. :D
Are there any decent electric engines out there? Are they safe in a water environment? More to the point, are there many places they can be charged?
To my knowledge there are no pure electric yachts. The range and speed would be miniscule. The best you could do is a Hybrid diesel electric system. This type of system uses diesel engines to charge battery banks that run electric motors to drive the yacht. This system can run directly from the batteries for short periods of time. For example a Wider 165 can run about 8-10 hours at a speed of 5-6 knots on battery power alone before recharging.
Purely electric systems are simply not practical for a yacht. Who wants a yacht with a 50 mile range before you have to pull in to a marina and recharge? Yachts are not like electric cars.
@@kokomo9764 I didn't think they were any around yet but have no doubt they will be coming, albeit slowly. People said similar things about cars but they got here, I am sure they could get 500 mile range now, a lot more in the future as technology improves. For now, since I want 6000nm range it's still diesel 😁
A note, solid frp isn't specifically stronger, in fact it can easily be weaker than a sandwich layup. The primary reason it is done is due to concerns over water ingress into the core material (this is a far bigger issue with wood-based cores and open cell foams, rather than the typical closed cell foam used). A solid laminate really only provides more weight for a little bit of piece of mind (it is more impact-resistant) and an easier construction process, compared to a sandwich layup that is designed and built properly.
Absolutely agree. Don't wanna "hurt" anyone, but there is "Lurssen" and the others...
Builder: Bering
Size: 145'
Staterooms: 6
Crew: 9-11

One thing that concerns me about GRP yachts is the number that have been in the news for catching fire which appear to have been completely consumed. While this is a tiny number compared to the number of yachts produced, it does seem that steel or aluminium hulls are not often reported to have suffered the same way (in fact, I can't recall seeing any). Do you have any thoughts on this please?
BTW - as most other have said, I very much enjoy and appreciate your content.
Thanks for watching.
Fire on a yacht (or any kind of ship) is ALWAYS a very bad thing, but you are right; it is particularly bad on a composite yacht if it gets out of control. ESysman has just published a great video on the subject.
@@Yachtsforsaleblog Thanks for the reply. The ESysman report was one of the incidents I had in mind.
As an aside, in the 1980s I took flying lessons in a tiny, 4-seat wood and canvas aircraft. Fire on one of those would be no joke either, and before I was allowed to fly solo we did lots of exercises practicing side-slipping (plane points in different direction to the flight heading) and other techniques to be able to see if smoke or oil was obscuring the view. It was drummed into me that I would be seriously told off if I failed to land safely (at an airfield if possible) no matter what problems arose with the plane!
@@Yachtsforsaleblog and another eSysman video today with 2 more yacht fires!
Cool
Are builders like Lursen willing to build smaller yachts or are they focused on building the largest??
Another very enjoyable and informative video, thank you 🙂
I have a question regarding sailing yachts. In your experience what is the largest sailing yacht that does not require a full time crew?
I lived on a yacht when I was a young teenager, a 41ft sloop. Being young, that yacht was quite large enough plus I spent most of my time either rowing around on the dinghy or in the water.
However I'm a tad older now and a bit of extra comfort and space is higher on the priority list.
There has been tremendous advances in technology to automate / semi automate sailing yachts. Hence my question.
I'm thinking more of a blue water yacht capable of ocean cruising.
Love to hear your suggestions.
Thanks in advance 🙂
In my opinion a 20 meter yacht (or 65 feet) is the absolut maximum without permanent crew. A lot of yachts this size have at least a bosun. In the Med you can easily handle 55 feet with a couple. In the Westindies the boats without permanent crew are a little larger, but there an extra crew is easy available if needed. In the Baltic you will never find a boat above 18 Meter without permanent crew. So it depends a lot of the regional infrastructure available. Generally speaking the better the infrastructure the less a permanent crew is necessary.
@@stefanschachler831 Thanks for your reply. That reminds me of a guy I met in the Whitsunday islands in Australia. He was a French guy who sailed across the channel in a 14ft open sailboat. Once in England he modified his boat to 17ft and enclosed it, i.e. created a relatively dry cabin area.
From there he ended up in Canada, met and married his wife.
When I met them they were sailing an old but beautiful H28. I asked him, if had could have any type of yacht, what would he choose?
His answer: A 60ft catamaran.
I asked him why and he simply said, I'd like enough room to hang my hammock and my toothbrush.
Getting back on topic, I'd be surprised with all the advances in technology that larger yachts couldn't be handled by a family, a couple, yes I understand the restrictions.
Either way, it will be an enjoyable journey.
Stay safe and thanks again 🙂
Excellent video..............Royal Huisman might make beautiful yachts but they will never get my business, snobs !!!
Would love to see more Turkish yachts featured here such as Bering, Vicem, Mazu, Turquoise etc
Oh yes, the Bering's...!
So many fail to understand that regardless of price there are always compromises. Understanding what you want to do and your personal tastes, before you start looking will speed up the process and reduce the costs. So many times you here stories of design changes mid build. (Says me who will tell you that I want a Gulet and end up buying a trawler style or vice versa)
