    Personally, if I was in the market to buy a yacht,
    I'd charter one first, to see if it was something I would really enjoy and invest money into it.

    • @joshuapinter
      @joshuapinter 5 лет назад +32

      @C Johnson It's an investment in yourself, your happiness and your well being. Often people that can make these kinds of "investments" have already made sufficient money so that a return in increased happiness is far more important than an additional zero on the balance sheet.

    • @johnrhodes7042
      @johnrhodes7042 5 лет назад +5

      C Johnson I'm guessing the kind of people that buy these yacht have enough money not to bother about the cost of the upkeep on them.
      If you have enough, the interest generated on your money alone could pay for it.
      I use the term 'invest' not in the normal sense. You don't just invest money, there is your time, your passion.
      Tbh if I bought one, it would be for my use, and family and friends.

    • @johnrhodes7042

      Your exactly right. That's what I actually meant to say.

      C Johnson, I’ve read that using your yacht as a charter, you come close to the upkeep costs. You have to have a crew and especially a captain that is a joy to be around. Certainly to get your yacht close or under a charter. A good charter broker is a necessity.

    • @patthonsirilim5739
      @patthonsirilim5739 4 года назад

      @C Johnson a yacht will never make money its purely a emotional investment on your part it will never make financial sense even those who charter them out are only able to pay for the upkeep of the yacht itself

  • @thenussbaum44

    Great video, but at the end of the day if you only plan on using it two or three times a year then charter is the way to go. If you have money to burn then buying is the way to go because ownership is like burning money. To come close to a brake even on off setting your costs, you have to charter out your yacht 15-weeks a year or more. That doesn't even factor in what the yacht cost. Yacht ownership is NOT an investment, its a life style and if you can do it you will love it.

    • @Yachtsforsaleblog
      @Yachtsforsaleblog  5 лет назад +4

      You obviously know what you are talking about. 15 weeks is about spot on for break even for most yachts.

  • @stephenmorgan5100
    @stephenmorgan5100 5 лет назад +38

    Knowing your captain and crew greatly enhances ones life style. They get to know what you like and if you are a good owner get to know your crew, this is so important. I know a person who doesn't even acknowledge his crew which makes them I guess dislike him. Perhaps this says more about me than my yacht but a number of my crew have become friends, a few look down on this for some reason!

    • @amandaashton5444
      @amandaashton5444 5 лет назад +12

      Stephen Morgan I couldn't agree more. Whether its on my own yacht or on a charter I always make a point of taking the crew out to dinner at least once per trip to give them a night off when we are on board, get to know about them and let them know how much they are appreciated.

      Having tons of money doesn't make one a better human being than someone else with little money, it just makes you rich. Every human being, be it your staff or a total stranger, deserves to be treated like one, with dignity, respect, empathy and compassion. The love and admiration you earn from those around you makes you a better human being. Sometimes, all a person working for you needs is a little appreciation and acknowledgement for the work they do. No amount of money you pay them can substitute for a pat on the back for a work well done and a greeting with a smile on your face, possibly on a first name basis. Cheers!

    • @wesrobinson7366
      @wesrobinson7366 4 года назад +2

      Stephen, you make a good point and it stretches farther than just a yacht. It's a fine line to run a crew with some familiarity but also understand the unique relationship. As the owner you are an employer and should lead them in a way that has good outcomes from you and them.

    Very interesting video. One question if I may: why on Earth is the charter industry ignoring the gorgeous Canary Islands? I honestly don't get it. All 7 islands are fantastic but I see the great potential that Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote offer. An amazing trio of islands to hop on and off and enjoy their weather, culture, history and cuisine, especially in stunning Gran Canaria.

      Cran Canaria and the Azores are not too far away from the Med. So in case someone would like to charter a yacht for a trip around/to these isles, they are in reach. Might cost some money (fuel and time) which the charterer need to pay for.

    David, this is absolutely fantastic information. Of course you could elaborate for hours on each point, and still never really answer the question fully. Such are decisions of this magnitude. There is no perfect anything! Stressing the importance of the Captain (being a retired Airline Captain, people don't choose us but will know the good one from the bad quite easily) cannot ever be stressed enough. Matter of fact, were I to be in the market, I might actually find my Captain even before the yacht and have him/her be involved from day ZERO. Now looking forward to the new vs. previously owned blog. That should be even more interesting! Thanks for doing these!! Capt. Chet.

    I will continue to charter for a few reasons
    1) only three weeks of my year are on water
    2) my 29 meter makes me num with silly expenses from dock line to engine management. 100$ to me is still 100$ if you catch the drift.

Now Im flat bound, and recently started to watch super yaght videos on youtube. Just want to say thankyou, as its good therapy believe it or not. Love seeing the whole vessel from bow to stern crew and guest areas etc. Ive just shy of 950 videos saved in my RUclips folder (private, as wouldn't share public other peoples videos that they want to be viewed on their channels. To build up likes and subscriptions). My fav yaghts tri-decks, also sime of the Trawler Yaghts. I love the Sunseeker 17million 131, Princess 30m 6.1 million, Andromeda and Ulysses. These were the first I viewed. Love every style from the super expsensive mega gigi superyaghts, down to the cheaper and smaller Trawler yaght 45ft and 30 to 40ft yaghts. Hope to find you on Instagram and facebook.
    Many thanks.

    Thanks for selecting such an interesting topic. One topic I have thought about was considerations made for an Engineer. Often that is the workhouse. Captain Kirk is only as strong as his Engineer(s) (Scotty?). And I have noticed that many 30-50m yachts often have a small office/tool room, as well as an aft Bedroom (ensuite). Like the Captain might have. I wonder if these accommodations affect resale? Thanks for the video.

    I think perhaps if you use the yacht at least 12 weeks out of the year then buy the yacht. Seems yachts charter for about 0.5-1% of its value so 3-4 months worth of charter equates to the annual 10-15% depreciation.

      Hi Venom,
      Watch the video from David regarding the cost of running a yacht, which he referred to in this video. And read my comment as well, regarding the cost of fuel for the generators. And then compare the charter costs for a yacht of a similar size.
      And you have your answer of how long you need to charter out a yacht to cover the annual cost.
      ;)

    I personally think that you must understand and get head around either if you have enough money to run the yacht or charter just to get experience, but if I would be buying a yacht I would firstly get charter for a 10day to see how all works. But you must have in mind all the types of running costs, crew salary etc...and would you want after your personal use put your yacht for charter for next year to gain some investment money back. Very interested.

    David i think your channel could cover a more broad area of yaching! You dont seem to cover the biggest part of the yachting market! Im talking production yachts from 50 to 80 feet! This part of the market is also more accessible to most! How many viewers would be in the market for a 120 foot vessel! Almost none but there would definitely be viewers watching that could be in the market for say a 60 foot yacht and also people that will one day be in the market for a smaller vessel!! I may be in the market in the future for a smaller vessel and there is no channels at all covering this side of the market except channels like boatsales that just show the yacht! I really believe you will gain a broader audience doing this! Its great to look at superyachts but they are out of reach for 99percent of us! People believe it costs millions per year to own say a 60 foot vessel and thats actually not true! If you captain yourself these vessels are well within reach if your smart and educated and thats what you could teach! There is many out there that would think its impossible to own what is actually within reach!! Just a thought!! ⚓🛳

      Hi Baddazz Garage - first of all thanks for being a regular viewer.
      I read your comment twice and you are absolutely right. At the moment I am getting requests from very large yacht builders to cover their yachts, but I should hunt out the smaller ones too since as you rightly say this can appeal to a much broader audience. Generally speaking large yacht manufacturers will deal with brokers, whilst yacht manufacturers building up to 80' will be tied to a dealer network... so it's not always easy to get information from them - however, it's worth pursuing.
      Watch this space!

      @@Yachtsforsaleblog thanks David for reply yes i have had trouble getting solid information from dealers and i fully understand your buisness is in the higher end but your broad understanding of the yacht industry you could use to your advantage in the smaller range with education for us less wealthy people wanting to get into yachting! I may be able to invest in the near future and i cant find any platforms to educate myself like youtube channels ! I am looking online trying to learn as much as i can because if i do invest i will not be financially strong enough to purchase a second time! I need to get it right the first time basically! I have learned alot from you your the only place ive found sound information and i really do appreciate it! Im always watching every video you make so i look forward to more educational vids! One question ive heard that princess yachts quality has dropped! If you were to purchase a yacht from princess , sunseeker, sanlorenzo or azumit in the 60 to 80 foot range who would you recommend?? They are my favorite vessels but ive had a few replies to comments saying princess are not what they were quality wise! Thanks again David talk soon!! Glenn Walker

      BADDAZZ GARAGE I understand your point, but I think most of us watching won't ever be able to afford anything bigger than a kayak and are just here out of curiosity about the super yachts even though we know we'll never be anywhere near one.

      @@Primalxbeast if you can find 1 or 2 people you trust you can purchase a used yacht 60 foot for 200k each! Docking fees about 5k each year! Fuel 2k each for a decent trip and maintenance 2k each per year! So 200k each to purchase and 8 to 10 k a year to maintain! This is alot more accessible than you may think! Even 600k to purchase on your own is very accessible around retirement! Yes alot wont be able to afford but yachting is not out of reach as much as you may think! Most people who own a yacht are actually part owners!! You can actually pick up an older yacht for 250k 60 foot long! Work hard and be smart with your money you can achieve it!! Their is a RUclips channel called trying not to sink! Check out his channel he has a video on costs and his purchase price of 65 foot hatteras! Yes its an older yacht but its very nice! I think you may be surprised!! Good luck dream big my friend!!

      that's a dumb comment....high net worth individuals are CONSTANTLY weighing their options in terms of risk/reward & cost/pleasure....that's why they ARE rich.
