    In 1974/5 I was preparing to go on exercise to Malaya with my Infantry Platoon when Tinea broke out in the Platoon. We only had a few days left before we embarked and anyone who could not pass a medical on the day of departure would not go! The medic was flat out prescribing Prescription medication but it seemed to be having no effect that I could determine on my daily inspections. So I instructed the Medic to place bowls of Portassium Permanganate in the entrance to the showers and every soldier had to enter and exit the showers by walking through the bowls. I instructed that I would place on charge any soldier who I found that did not have "brown feet" when I did my inspection. [Portassium Permanganate stains the skin brown]. Within two days we had settled the Tinea problem and all embarked for the exercise. To this day, i still rely on Portassium Permanganate for all manner of issues - far better than any prescription medication.

    I live in Papua, Indonesia. I currently have some in my cabinet. I use it to treat fresh vegetables that I want to eat without cooking, like lettuce. Soak the veggies in the lightest solution he showed us on the video, second from left, for 20 minutes. Take out and let air dry on the counter. If I run out of bleach for treating my dishwashing rinse water, I will use a very light solution of it.

      One thing to have on hand for poison ivy/oak is Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda. It's basically (chemistry pun intended...) sodium carbonate, and it's sufficiently alkaline to break down oils (such as urushiol), but not too caustic as to harm the skin (as long as it's not on the skin too long). Mix it with a little dish soap and warm water, and you have a good solution (yeah...another chemistry pun) to a potentially bad situation.

      In WW2 Potassium Permanganate was used to treat athletes foot and trench foot. A dark purple solution in water and you would soak your feet, and the Sargent would check for the purple stain on the feet to make sure the chemical was used properly.

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj Год назад +2

      @@disposablehero4911 The concentration is arbitrary, the point is that it is easier to dispense drops with a dropper accurately than powder on a spatula. So for example dissolve 0.5g in a vial of water. You now know to dispense 50mg (0.05g) which is 1/10 of 0.5 gram, you need to dispense 1/10 of the vial.
      That said for survival purposes it is kind of unnecessary. We already have the qualitative test which he demonstrated which is the how darkly tinted the water is.

    In some countries like India, PP is used to disinfect vegetables - by soaking them in a very light solution (like the 1st solution you made here). I use that same light PP solution, to soak my salad lettuce. A tiny amount of PP on the end of a flat toothpick, is plenty. There has been a lot of contaminated lettuce products, here in the US. And you are correct, the 1st solution you made, is too dark a color for drinking - you should just barely see the color. Remember, cold water takes 30-60 minutes to disinfect; always go longer to be sure. PP can be carried in super-tough and leak-proof soda-bottle preforms, Amazon has them. A preform filled with PP, should be in every emergency kit.

    The concentration that you used to treat wounds can be used to treat a sore throat (gurgle a little of this solution for at least 10-15 seconds, repeat 2-3 times and DO NOT swallow ). It is harsh but works magic on strep throat.

    When I cycle the well to mix the sand the only way I know the well was cycled is the toilet bowl in the farthest bathroom of the house gets blue water. I flush several times and the water comes back to clear.

      @@themoviejockey no I am talking about potassium permanganate in powder form, I used to work for a water treatment company and we used it to regenerate Greenland filters and it will definitely combust if you get a little water in a container of the dry powder, never add liquid to powder as you will have maximum saturation upon contact, always add powder to water so that it dilutes instantly,
      I have used caustic soda also and yes it is dangerous also but I dont know enough about its combustion traits to comment but I do know it will eat your skin lol

    • @Liv1ngTheDream

      True, but it appears to be filtered out in large scale water treatment processes before human consumption. Not quite the one step survival solution it's made out to be, other than as a wound disinfectant.

    • @terrywaters6186
      @terrywaters6186 4 года назад +1

      Hopefully it would only be used for survival over a short period keeping in mind you can die from drinking contaminated water much quicker. Think dysentery. I think the beauty of this stuff is a small easy to carry amount could treat a large amount of water and sustain a number of people in an emergency. Don't forget the other uses. Sounds like it would be very useful preventing infection in burns.

      I would put my sugar and PP mix into a tiny little ziplock bag. This would prevent you breathing in any dust released while you are bashing it AND contain the granules so it doesn't shoot all over the place. Of course the fire reaction will melt the tiny bag but that's not a problem. Extra fuel for the fire.

    On the water purification front, that was way too pink. Also, you made a point to make sure it's dissolved. You should know that iron and soluble manganese (common in surface water) will solidify/crystallize and settle out (precipitate) of the water as dark/black grit resembling the original KMnO4--it will not re-dissolve with stirring. Simple filtration will remove it. Also, the stronger solutions can and will cause almost any organic fabric (denim) or paper to combust just like it does the glycerin, just not as spectacularly. In the antiseptic mode it will stain the skin brown. That color will have to wear off, much like a henna tattoo..

    Potperm should be used to disinfect water by creating the small dilution and adding it to your water to be disinfected, rather than by adding crystals directly. NEVER add water to crystals. Only add crystals to water.
    With proper protocols you can use potperm to treat swamp, stagnant and putrid fresh water. However,get the training first.
