I used to make something similar with old grenade fuses when I was in the Marines. I used M16 and M60 blanks and fitted to right height and taped them so the hammer would hit the primers. My Marine buddies either hated them or wanted to know how to make them for field use.

I was just talking to an old Marine buddy of mine about the time I did basically the same thing you did, but I didn't have tape so had to use some Wire I found laying around during an exercise on Pendleton back in the late 80's. Fun Times, Semper Fidelis!!

GREAT! I appreciate the time you took to make this video. I had an experience this weekend while camping - a stranger roamed up and scared the living daylights out of me! I looked for perimeter alarms and they were quite expensive. This is the best idea I have seen. This is going to my permanent camp.

The blackpowder version of this has been available for awhile from Dixie gun works. It works on a percussion cap and has a screw base. Designed to be triggered by a window or door opening
Just made four of these. A few tips to share. Some of the grenade fuses can be tapped out with a good size nail. Just gently tap the nail into the botttom of the fuse device. I opened my steel vice just enough to allow the fuse to pass down. You can use a piece of 2x4 also. The tube shaped fuse will pop out. Saving the hastle of drilling it out from above. Then the 12 Gauge primers will drop right in. Also, my springs on the firing pin were so strong I could not just pull them back with my fingernail like the video showed. Maybe he got lighter springs cause mine were not easy to pull back to set the cotter pin. I also cĺeaned the gunk out of the tube below real good. This will allow for the primer noise to blow out at maximum noise. Without any restrictions of old burnt stuff. You will see what I mean. Have fun, be safe !

fishing line would be better, harder to see, and less prone to rips and the weather, still a nice Idea tho.

Mono would be good line.. dark braid might even be better since its not as reflective and is stronger. Im thinking stealth camping here =/

Also,..... there are very cheap window alarms you can purchase at the Dollar Store,...... simply mount one,... use a string to pull the magnet away (simulating the window opening) and the piercing shriek will alert you for a looooooong distance. The perpetrator (typically) will NOT be able to silence it as the tripwire will have pulled it away,.... and since you camouflaged it with paint,... it will not be found anytime soon. It will 'alarm' until broken,.... or the battery runs out!
Or if it rains...
those are great when it's midnight and you're in bed, gotta run outside and plug it back in.

edmond vodochodsky I used to use those window alarms on my refrigerator to keep the dog out. He knew how to open it with his paw. Lost a lot of lunch meat to that damned dog.
Those are cool for a lot of things. After tinkering with about thirty dollars of the dollar store ones over time, I've made my own magnetic switches for all sorts of things like secret invisible "keyholes" for my car and house and hidey places to put cool things in.
Too bad someone else started successfully selling secret gun storage before I looked it up. They're already on to RFID actuated ones now. My little handmade magnet safes wouldn't have a place in the market now. haha
Still go make them for friends, though. They don't look like the ones that are mass produced.. You know. . the ones that every thief can look up online before they break into your house so they know what to look for.

Absolutely THE BEST idea for a trip yet
A great idea.! You could use it for a bait package to teach "porch pirates" a lesson. Might be a good idea to hacksaw the treads off the trigger to further "de-mill" the trigger for legal reasons. Without treads, there is no way to just screw it into something, to trigger an explosive devise. (Hopefully viewed as LESS likely in the eyes of the local L.E.O) Might be a handy argument if ya end up in court having to explain things to a judge. Thanks for the awesome video. We did this using rat traps, fishing line, finishing nails and shotgun shells (with the shot removed) back in the late 90s for an alert system on our ranch as we grew THE BEST outdoor cannabis in NorCal!

A tip tie a fish swivel hook to your line then quick attach to your trip device pin

Just weave fishing line over trails like a spiderweb. It'll rustle the brush and they'll probably let out a few explicatives. If you are extra paranoid tie some cans to the sides or rig up a Thunder-B co2 Airsoft flashbang to a tripwire.

A guy near where I live used a set up like this to dissuade visitors to his property. A Border Patrol agent tripped one during a chase. He freaked out when he realized that he was surrounded by trip wires. A Fed bomb disposal unit was called in to disable his "early warning system". Never saw the dude again.

Now that's funny because they are INERT and perfectly legal as long as you are NOT making a explosive device to cause harm and only useing shotgun primers in them for a perrimiter security alarm on your own property.
It sounds to me the person that didn't come back was either growing something illegal or they were messing with explosives other wise if it was only the INERT smoke top and one little 12 gauge primer that they got him for now doesn't that sound a bit like a tyrannical government agency to you???

I like using these devices. They are effective and inexpensive to if you lose a few your not at a huge loss. I myself like to use the spoon attachment. I also like to use a can or PVC to set them. I fix the can/PVC horizontally attach a spring to a fixed object then into the end of the PVC and attached to the bottom of the device. Hook the wire to the device (not the pin) running out the front and across any suspected paths of approach. To arm it I pull the pin and slide it into the tube with the spoon holding down the hammer. If the wire is pulled the device slides out the front releasing the spoon and discharging the primer to alert you. If some one cuts the wire, the spring pulls the device out the back of the tube releasing the spoon and discharging the device alerting you......win win. *Note...affix the pin to the tube by wire so it is there when your ready to disarm and travel. Everything stores inside the tube for packing. Makes deploying and moving easier. In a desert or rocky environment where you might not be able to affix it to anything you can use flex ties to attach to rocks, or even just wedge the tube between rocks. All purpose all terrain......:) Semper Fi.

Maybe try and use some dark green braided fishing line (braid doesnt stretch)
parker benz use kevlar thread, it neither stretches, is incredibly strong, and is virtually invisible unless you are looking for it. But, by strong, I mean super strong! It's been used by the military for years.
... I use "Cajun Line" fishing line, 14 lb test, no stretch and some have been up for over a year and not degraded by the weather or sun light ... it is red on the roll and invisible to man and beast in the field and does a great job of pin pulling when contacted by any one or thing crossing the line ... also great for fishing, disappears in the water ...
Light green braided spider wire works awesome for perimeter alarm trip wire.
Theres an e alarm now that requires no incendiary or primer or dangerous parts. 130db. Rigged the same way. Small and compact.

have you ever tried the .22 squibs for concrete anchoring guns?
It does not strike the rim so it wont trigger

If your hole fits a shotgun primer, it'll take a ramset blank. #1s are about as loud as the primer. #4's are loud AF. Those need to get knocked out w a screwdriver from the bottom though & sometimes they "blossom" when go off
we used those ramset to anchor aluminum sills to steel i beams, i couldnt believe it worked but it did. amazing, depaul building in chicago

to go further on my response to Richard Lee's comment about adding a spoon, We have all seen how the BATFE flipflops on their stances. If you wish to keep yourself clear of their BS, two mods would remove this device even further from the detonator classification that makes the loose fitting primer a requirement. First would be grind or file off the threads from the base of the head, and second would be remove the spoon pivots from the head. This would prevent any overzealous agent or power hungry assistant director from proclaiming that it is a detonator because it has a hammer in it. Also removing the threads will make it possible to easily slip a finger cot on the base of the head to keep it dry and bugs out, you van take a piece of plastic such as from a disposable plastic container, and gently heat it with a heat gun so it drops down over the head (Yes I am intentionally not using the term detonator because it is no longer a detonator) and conforms to its shape, making a cover, that you can punch the holes for the release pin and NOTCH for the nail , if you do this, make sure you add a spacer on to the nail such as a nut or a heavier pop rivet with the shaft removed, so the cover can easily be flung off by the hammer, trimming it at an angle from the top front leaving a small lip, down lower on the back where a spoon would lay would be most effective, allowing use in rain with no issues.
They are INERT and made into perimeter alarms by adding a shotgun primer is all and for use on private property,

Yeah I searched the page link and only found 100 ct heads for $85 which also comes with a bunch of other parts we don't need for this. The heads look different too. Longer. Not sure if this is the same thing

Sootch: What a great idea to help keep bears out of your camp and avoid any complications that can arise from their visit! Especially a mother bear with cubs. Could also protect you valuables while camping from someone stealing them. But lets face it, the real reason these would be great to have is to keep Bigfoot out of camp and messing with you food, valuables and your life!!! lol But on a serious note, these could be a life saver when used propperly. Thanks so much for sharing with us because I was looking for an inexpensive way to keep bears out of camp without hurting any of them and without the costly expense of an electric fence.
