    Treating fish with potassium permanganate
Potassium permanganate can be used to treat parasites on individual fish. It will eliminate anchor worms, fish lice, flukes, ich, costia, cotton mouth, fungus and many types of bacteria. Prepare 8 Litres (2.1US G.) of water at aquarium temperature and add 1/8 teaspoon (0.6g) of crystals.
    Stir until dissolved.
Dip fish into solution for 5 minutes. If fish looks stressed, remove at once.
Dip fish into clean water for a few seconds to rinse.
Do NOT use this level of potassium permanganate in an aquarium tank!
    Tank treatment
Potassium permanganate is an effective anti-parasite treatment (Ich, etc.), as well as being able to remove odours from tanks and increasing the redox potential of the water.
However as this compound is very toxic, using the wrong dosage will result in killing all life in the tank.
Biological filtration systems should be removed before applying.
This compound works best with little or no light.
Typically used against bacteria (including your nitrifying bacteria in your filter) and parasites. You use a solution of 2ppm (this is 0.5 grams per 380L (100 US gallons) or 0.065g per 50L). Repeated every 2-3 days for a maximum of 5 treatments.
    Thanks for watching!

That was a proper educational upload J and no doubt many enthusiasts have benefited from it. Personally, never used it, never heard of it and hopefully never need it but still a cracking bit of info to store in the back of the mind.I don’t even keep Koi but still find these uploads interesting.
    Top man...

Hi Jack 👋 I use PP and have had no issues as ive Always weighed the correct amount out for the water im treating (knowing the pond volume including filters is key) I also Always leave all filtration running as its key to removing all bad bacteria and parasites.
It does indeed kill all good and bad bacteria but the filtration bounces back quite quickly especially in an established pond.
I've never done a treatment in the dark but its not advisable to do it in the summer when the sun is on the water.
Dissolving the crystals in hot water and using an airstone to keep it mixing for approximately 20mins helps to make sure there are no clumps that could cause the fish any problems, although i just mix up the appropriate amount in a jug of hot water and stir it until im ready to use it.
Adding it to the pond return slowly so it mixes and doesn't put a thick cloud around the fish all of a sudden.
I used to use hydrogen peroxide until i was told about sodium thiosulfate crystals.
Sodium thiosulfate crystals are less toxic/harsh on the koi and its also a dechlorinator too. There have been many instances where people have accidentally put far too much sodium thiosulfate in their pond without ill effects.
You should be able to find information on how to make sodium thiosulfate into a dechlorinator right here on RUclips (project koi RUclips channel has a video about it ).
One last thing and this one is important to people like myself who don't really like Adding chemicals to my water, when potassium permanganate is added to your pond you are to hang around to keep an eye on your koi just incase the worst happens. You need to keep the water a pink/purple colour for atleast 4hrs so it does its job. If it turns brown before that time you are to add more PP in the Same fashion at half the original dose. On really mucky ponds it will be spent quickly so its not uncommon to add a few half doses to dissolve all the organics in the system. If the PP has been 4hrs and is now brown/spent so not active anymore then you don't need too add hydrogen peroxide or sodium thiosulfate as there is nothing to gain by adding those chemicals. Water changes will clear the colour out of the water.
I use PP in a mild form 24hrs before treating for flukes as it removes the slime coat exposing the flukes so the treatment has more chance of getting the job done.
I appreciate thats a lot of information and its only Tuesday 🤣
    Take care matey 👍

I used POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE a few years ago now on my 4ft coldwater tank. I stupidly ignored quarantine regulations and my fish were showing signs of fin rot! I was told about Potassium Permanganate by a local Pond supplies who also bred Koi! I can also say from experience it dyes skin as soon as it touches it, I had a bright purple thumb and forefinger for day's from opening the packet! But it sorted the fin rot after approximately two or three applications. It's brilliant stuff but I found out again to my ignorance how deadly it can be. My favourite koi was showing an ulcer on it's Gill plates. So I thought that I would apply PP directly to the open ulcer with a cotton ear bud. As soon as I applied it to the ulcer the tiniest of trickles ran to the Gill rake's the fish gave a massive jump so I put him straight to the open tank but it was to late he was already dead, it shocked me how fast it happened! To say I was gutted would have been a massive understatement. I only medicate the tank now.
So as you can imagine I'm always extra cautious whenever I have to use it.
But in my opinion the Pros outweigh the Cons if used correctly.
I was also advised to remove all Activated Carbon & filters before using the Potassium Permanganate, I don't use Activated Carbon unless the tank water has a smell to it.
It amazes me how the purple water clears completely after about 6 hours or less! It will be really interesting to see how it effects your pod, I never thought about soaking equipment in it that's really handy to know thank you.

@@TheBaldingReefer That will be really handy thank you. I've tried the word of mouth, but to actually see the procedure first hand would be great and I would feel more confident following. To lose a fish is upsetting but to lose a fish due to my ignorance is unforgettable. I'm finding myself getting more paranoid if ever I medicate the tank or individual fish.
