Iv kept fish for nearly 50 years i currently have 5 aquariums and a pond and iv come to the conclusion the only time fishkeeping is relaxing is when you are looking at other people's fish
Hi Carl. I think the problem with your fish was that when the filter stopped, the bacteria died and that stopped the nitrogen cycle. Instead of relatively harmless nitrate you end up with much more toxic nitrite and even ammonia in the water. This stresses the fish badly and you can get all sorts of secondary infections. The best thing is to immediately get the filter and bacteria back online and replace 80% of the water with fresh water (you may have to do this a couple of times). I am really enjoying watching your fishing vids! Dr. Paul Rushton
Oh this makes so happy to see the koi are ok. I’m glad you are taking care of yourself too! A great message for all of us that forget to do that enough
Thankfully no bacterial issues the vet said :) - just a superficial inflammation response from poor water quality. She gave them a vitamin injection to boost their immune system and checked for parasites too. which was negative, grateful there was nothing else wrong. They've recovering well after salt doses, lots of water changing and adding bi carb whenever is needed to keep the KH high enough, especially after the heavy rains we had. Very relieved that the water quality has bounced back nicely :)
Fair play carl! You push yourself to the limits and it pays off! Your the reason i got into fishing, watching how far you have come is amazing! I hope the fish get well soon and i hope you start feeling better about your self. Even though you dont need to👌 crack on and tightlines fella
So glad to hear your fish are on the mend, i have been keeping koi for over 40 years, i know the feeling when you think they are not well, one thing i have learnt is that the more complicated the filter system , the more to go wrong, modern day filters are very effective, but they have way more chance of going down when you least expect them....
Cheers Alec :) they are doing loads better. That's true, thankful to have the system linked to my phone now which will let me know if anything malfunctions, Omi can help if I'm not there then.

I got to a point to try to have something every 2 hours. I lost 30lbs fairly quick 3 to 4 meals and healthy snack inbetween. I don't exercise as much as I should yet but plan to increase now that I have my water intake and food fixed. Hope you get to where you want with your health need a teammate or support let me know

Really happy your fish are getting back to normal! Maybe consider stocking a couple of large green/golden Tench in with your koi? Just in case you get similar issues in the future? There's a reason why they're so slimy and are called Doctor Fish. They'll help with any skin/scale issues. I know they're not koi but they ARE beneficial (and beautiful also).

Glad you got sorted dude. It's definitely a rollercoaster hobby for sure. Cracking video. Crazy incident on the Motorway fella. Some people or off the scale. Take care.
Nice one, Carl, it's nice to see your fish are getting healthy again they are very beautiful fish 🐟 and very big, and you have been catching some big carp as usual 😁🐟🎣 and keep looking after yourself carl and I can't wait for the next film amazing work as always 😁👏👍🎣
Great watch. If I may suggest in regards to the log book: consider using "waterproof paper" as it would make it (for me at least) a big selling point knowing that I can use it and write on it in the rainy/wet conditions without having it get wet/damaged. It is more pricy, but might be worth it, as a premium version perhaps? Good stuff though.
That would be great and I think it is available as an option, just means it's harder to write on! But I see what you mean, I'll look into it and see whether it's possible from our printer. I suppose it would need a fine tip waterproof pen too that won't smudge. I wonder if one those protector booklets/outer sleeve thing would help a little for the regular ones?

Smaller but more regular water changes is enough to help to improve the water quality - the koi are doing much better now, and water quality has bounced back :)
Saprolegniasis. Low water temperature or poor water quality will cause saprolegnia. Using methylene blue to isolate the medicated bath alone has the best effect.
Thanks! However the vet found no disease or parasites thankfully. It was just an inflammation response from poor quality due to the motor breaking and bacteria dying. The fish are recovering well since the water quality has improved :)
Add a few manageable plants to your pond , my old man’s kept koi for year and his pond used to be plant free back in the day and since he’s found adding plants just hold a balance for the bacteria and nitrogen etc. with the water. Natural is best
Water quality is at the root of most fish health problems. Either an equipment failure, inadequate equipment or over feeding are common causes of water quality problems, which are then damaging to fish health and weakens their immune system. The filter is basically like a mini sewage works, relies on bacteria to break down organic waste, mainly fish waste.
Absolutely! The filtration system had been doing a great job maintaining excellent water quality and clarity since the pond was built - the motor breaking while being on holiday was bad luck. The pond builders were supposed to link my system to my phone but they never managed to make it work. Thankful to have got the motor replaced and to now have it all linked up to my phone so my partner can step in if I'm not there to fix it. I also keep my pond on the understocked side too to allow a buffer if anything does go wrong which gives me peace of mind also.
glad to hear that there on the mend. Lots of people have suffered with bacterial problems with koi this year, so you’re not alone! but I would say for the size and quality of your fish, I would invest in better food than the food you were using in the video like some like saki hikari
Looks like bioload in your pond/tank is substantial: you need to get a in a water quality computer going. That is about 1-2k investment at most, but you will see all the stats on your phone. Reef tanks all have these systems in order to keep alive at all times.

Or for a bit extra you could have a little panel in the house that brings on a light to say there is a fault. Which I’m guessing could probably be monitored by a phone somehow.
Yes I have it linked to my phone now! I have nest cameras too but this wouldn't be able to detect faults like a broken motor unfortunately.

I feed Saki Hikari balance :) It's just put into a different tub because the Saki bags are massive. !! :)
Great news on the koi Carl! 😎😎
Thanks mate!
Glad to hear your koi are getting better
:)
Looks like bioload in your pond/tank is substantial: you need to get a in a water quality computer going. That is about 1-2k investment at most, but you will see all the stats on your phone. Reef tanks all have these systems in order to keep alive at all times.
Carl another brilliant video
Oh damn that Maidenhead is round the corner from me 😅 I bought a Lima catfish from there a few months ago. Good shop
Nice!!

Thanks mate! I've found recording captures and details about the venue is a great way to remember sessions and learn what did and didn't work! 😊
Glad your fish are OK mate ❤😊
Thanks man, very relieved!
Good job ya noticed about fish in time and its deffo true about the water saying keep the water good and ya don't normally have problems mate
Thanks Mark. For sure :) relieved to now have the system linked to my phone now so if anything breaks it can get on top of it sooner.
Hope your koi get better carl 👍❤️🎣
