    I remember seeing them on Bandstand and being blown away by their use of a children's chorus in a rock song. Went out that evening and bought the album. Loved them ever since.

    "The Winter Song" was magical. It's like a combination of a Christmas Carol and a Church Hymn, and it totally reminds you of the season of Winter. (I ought know!...I'm a Canadian Wolf! We get lots of snow in most parts of the country in Winter! Lol.)

    Not sure if that is true about Lenny Kravitz... The Choir on the Angel record is the 'California Boys Choir' Lenny is known to have grown up in NYC...
    Although the album "White Hot" was released in 1987, this single was released early in late 1977 for the Christmas Holiday...
    I loved these guys, one of my fav bands of my youth, I was lucky enough to work with a couple of the members that briefly reformed during the 2000-2002 period.

  • @satomiwa

    Wow...I never knew about this. I was a huge Angel fan at the time. Even though I was a kid then, I remember the KISS comparison thing being completely intentional. played up by Casablanca and the press and both bands. It was The Tower that made me a fan. I thought they were a bit like Rush, and not so much like KISS (musically). I didn't like them so much by the time White Hot came out, though I bought it anyway, and I even bought Sinful the next year. Not sure why since I was pretty much done with that sort of stuff by 78/79. They started out pretty heavy, but seemed to go more in the direction of Journey, and I hated music like that. Anyway, this video's a blast from the past even though I never saw this at the time and didn't even know they were ever on Bandstand. Thanks for the upload.

    All of my favorite bands were bands that "almost" made it: ANGEL, STARZ, URIAH HEEP

    • @goopah
      @goopah 8 лет назад +1

      +Heepster ~ No offense taken, as I'm a big Heep fan also. And point taken; they were in fact a big act in the day (and still have a huge fan base), so I mis-spoke. They simply were not a commonly-known band in the upper Midwest, where I live (North Dakota), so they were not appreciated as much around here. I sometimes think that I'm their only fan in Bismarck. However, since I am a big fan of Angel and Starz, I will continue to mention them in the same breath. I hope that will not offend you too much. :) And I certainly do not want to debate which of those bands was best, as I love all 3 equally. Each to his own, and all that, and I won't try and talk you out of your opinion, which is perfectly valid. Us 'old' rockers need to stick together! All my best to you.

    • @goopah
      @goopah 8 лет назад +2

      +Heepster ~ A little aside: A while back, a researcher at the State Library emailed me through a Uriah Heep review that I had done on Amazon years ago. She told me that she was researching (from a customer request) whether Uriah Heep had ever had a concert in North Dakota at all, or more specifically, Bismarck. As Heep was just a few years before my time, I didn't know, but I told her I didn't think so, or I would have remembered. Do you know where I might find specific information like that? Is there a Heep concert database anywhere that you know of?

    • @goopah
      @goopah 8 лет назад +1

      +Heepster ~ One more thing: I've had many favorite Heep songs over the years, and you may strongly disagree, but one of my favorites was always "Simon The Bullet Freak". What do you think of that song? Everyone I play it for does not understand why I love it so much.

    Kravitz moved to LA in 1974 and joined the choir for 3 years, so the possibility of him being one of the singers on this is quite strong. And do you mind my asking who it was you worked with in Angel during 2000-2002 period? I am just curious as to what you did and who you are.

Punky no longer owns the tanning salon & yes Mick Jones did die. (R.I.P.) Frank owns his own business in Vegas helping up & coming musicians get started in the music business & he & Barry still occasionally perform as Angel. As a matter of fact, they just played a festival in England on July 12 & 13th this year!

    Lip syncing...over used. This song had such great potential. The gospel sound and the invisible "choir" came close to but never raised the hairs on my arms. The harmonics IMO...is what saves this song.I blast this every Christmas eve, by the way.

    • @goopah
      @goopah 8 лет назад +1

      +FishHeadSalad ~ Yep, I dislike lip synching. I'd rather hear a bad live performance over a lip synched version any day. However, I have had zero luck over the years in finding ANY live footage of this band, although some is rumored to exist, but was never released, so this is about as good as we're likely to get.

      And I didn't hear any guitar solo in the song. No heavy rock drum sound. Come on. Anybody who thinks this is better than Kiss don't know what good R&R music is. Period.

    They had a good image, they were all great musicians and they had the looks but... they hadn't had the songs. Throughout their entire career they were somewhat lacking in the songwriting department. That is maybe the reason why they never really made it. Didn't bands perform two songs on AMB, if so, would like to see the other
    If they were being promoted as antithis (opposite) of KISS, why did management "persuade" them to they write sexual inunendo type songs that KISS did constantly?
    A real mistake as at this time KISS was becoming a teenybop band and Angel's material would not have appealed to (I suppose) the girl fans, still to heavy for Roller lovers
    Should have gone in a more progressive vain as in their early albums

    I know what happened to them. They broke up, and formed with other members, and Greg cut all his hair very short. He looks hella old, and looks like a used car salesman, and Punky opened up a tanning salon on the coast, and the bass player died! The drummer i think still plays. He's the only member that looks the same. R.I.P. Bass player!

      It was the original bassist Mickey Jones that passed not the bassist in this clip.

      Yes. I directed the choir and made the music arrangement behind Angel. Lenny was definitely there.

    Could have been more. The horrible long puffy hair group portrait alone probably killed them. Lip Syncing for Dick Clark didn't help much.
