- Angel is an American glamrockband from Washington D.C.
The band was formed in 1975 with members Punky Meadows (guitar), Mickie Jones (bass), Frank DiMino (vocals), Gregg Giuffria (keyboard) and Barry Brandt (drums). Their first musical attempts took place under the name Sweet Mama from Heaven. After a short while they changed their name to Angel, a tribute to Jimi Hendrix's song of the same name.
The band played exclusively in white, which was supposed to be a contrast to Kiss. The band members also had an androgynous image, which was a hallmark of glamrock. After a tour the band released the album 'Helluva Band' (1976) and was voted best newcomer by music magazine Circus. They left Heart and Boston behind. The third album was eventually recorded with Eddie Kramer and released in 1977 under the title 'On Earth as It Is in Heaven'. With this album the band developed from a typical glam rock band to a hard rock band.
In 1978 Angel managed to score at a radio hit in Germany. Their 'Winter song' reached # 3 of the radio hit parade WDR2 hit rally in January of the year.
Winter Song reached # 20 in the Dutch Top 40 on 8 april 1978

I was at this concert. Their stage intro was unbelievable. Angel was the opening band for Blue Oyster Cult, and Blue Oyster Cult was doing their some enchanted evening album. Track 2 and Track 3 was recorded for the album that night.

@@tomnik602 I still have my 8-track tape from when this album came out. My brother blasted it in his Plymouth Fury in high school. He gave me the tape when he went into the army. It's in a box in the next room right from where I am. Can't play it on anything, but it did sound better on 8-track than on digital. I also have a few other Angel albums from back then too.
70 model Mustang 8 trac, 6 x 9 mind blowers with 90 watt amps, cruising Main Street or Back Roads. Those were the days.

I saw them in Pgh in 78!The Godz were with them. It was a $2 concert. Never heard of either of them. However, bought both their albums the next day!!!!

Criminally underrated band! Their 79 album 'sinful' is a pop/rock masterpiece.

Hahahha, this was Van Halens competition, I got this record and van Halen one, they both came out at the same time, I played this three times and never listened to it again and I'm working on my tenth copy of van Halen one now.
Beyond me why this is never played around Christmas with all of holiday stations.

Tower is a prog Masterpiece. The first two Angel albums are Classics. After that, they went commercial. With shorter and poppier songs. Thanks to their management.

I've always wondered why Barry Brandt didn't get picked up by a big band after Angel- he was an absolutely smoking drummer, just coming off of a pretty well-known, major label band at the time. Dude had serious chops, a good image, and five studio albums plus several tours under his belt. Maybe he didn't want to go further or had some professional or issues of some wort- who knows.
A major label (Casablanca)that put most of their money into (angel) when they could’ve also had Van Halen. Whoever made that decision was so typical back then. Some of those guys had NO understanding of talent underneath volume from heavy bands. They probably couldn’t tell the difference between blue cheer and Jimi Hendrix. They related to Bay city rollers friendly since the monkeys already done it

The band never stood a chance being on the Casablanca label the same time as Kiss, even though Angel was a much better band IMHO.
I caught a Angel drum stick in Amarillo Texas. Ted Nugent was headliner that night in 1978.

They had a couple decent songs. They weren't pioneers or innovative. They were so packaged and marketed that it was hard to endorse them. They didn't know who they were; a KISS meets YES in white tights. They were cool in concert when you were high. Metal came along and made them look wimpy.

Nobody ever tried harder than Angel. They had everything down. They had the looks, the moves, the chops, all of it except the songs. They were B grade the whole time.
