Great one! I also think another great contribution to this comes from Steve Gadd, he shows lots of these concepts (or very similar) in the In Session DVD.
The main thing i always take away from your videos is the importance of focusing on lining things up, timing wise. It's genuinely helped me, so thanks for that. Cool lesson, as always
Congrats on your gospel ‘shout’ bell work video 😜; we were shedding on the “Loud Jazz” album with Dennis while simultaneously fighting with the DMB loyalist about Carter not being the GOAT of drumming. Memories 😁 great video, Nate…love what you do.
For everything 7:51 onward, I like to put the kick and snare in 7/8 while the ride and hat override in 4 over it. It's sweet, one of my favorite warmups.
Gavin Harrison is an absolute master when playing the ride bell and bringing in other cymbals and grooves. Check out his Porcupine Tree stuff, tons of videos on RUclips.
This was really a great video full of great information and ideas from which to spring off. I not as familiar with the drummers that you cited, however, I like this style of drumming and am looking forward to implementing this in my current practices rotation. Thank you Nate for another great video. As for drummers who inspired me to play on the bell I would have to say The Professor himself. He made masterful use of the bell in many of his grooves.
My favorite example of this is Manu Katché playing on Julia Fordham's song Manhattan Skyline. I approach this sort of thing as variations on a cascara in the right, and filling in the spaces with the left, throwing in some short rolls every now and then.
This is a GREAT video dude. I absolutely love Dennis's ride playing but haven't seen it commented on much never mind a video covering it. Thanks a mil, looking forward to getting stuck in to this :)
Dennis has a funk lick that uses on the track SPHERICAL from the Brecker Brothers …… At the live performances he uses this funk lick alternating with the Ride Bell , Crash Bell and Snare ….. have you seen this ?
Hey man I love your videos! As an more advanced drummer you break down topics in way anyone can get it. That’s amazing!!! Can you do a lesson on using fingers for speed? Kinda like that push pull technique. Thanks.
just tried it and it worked for me. Anyway I'll link you, and if you still want to subscribe to the mailing list you can just do that on the homepage. www.the8020drummer.com/new-products-1/ride-cymbal-bell-transcriptions
For the 80's rock people, this exercise is pretty much the same thing Troy Luccketta plays on the chorus of 'Modern Day Cowboy.' Could make it more interesting and fun to learn?
Talking about coordination your videos would be more condensed if you could talk and play at the same time. Burnie Perdue makes it look so easy though.
@@ThomasistheTwin Does that actually make it easier to learn tho? I always found it a little distracting. When I want to listen to the playing, I want to hear it without somebody talking over it. A lot of what people talk about when they do the "talk and play" is kind of show-offy stuff too. "Now we bring it down! Ain't no thing! We're just walking the dog! Ok who's got an idea? You in the front row! Singles? Okay! [does singles]". Open minded to being wrong 🤷♂️

You got to love this lesson and the Tintin hair style

My
Aunties drummer boyfriend bought me 'Serious Moves on VHS when I was 15, Id never seen anything like it.
I love the admiration that you have for other drummers!
Thanks for breaking it down into step-by-step segments. Very helpful.

One of your best lesson videos to date.

that mic stand reminds me of nate woods left hand underneath the bass neck 😂

I knew at 13 I was going to name my 1st son Carter. That boy is 7 and my world.
Can you link original clips?

Good lesson👍
great lesson!
Hell yeah, made me want to go listen to Dennis on Scofield’s Blue Matter. Cheesy as hell but good
Blue Matter is a modern classic.
Always ,much love broo !!!!🥁🔥🥁✌✌🇵🇷✌
Brilliant stuff !!!
So good.....thank you!
That.... that last one... how!? O.O The rest are a challenge, but at least I'm sure I can get them... :O
Sometimes I enjoyed the floor tom rim sound over the ride to contrast w/ the other drum sounds.
What's up with the cymbals? why are they all messed up :D
For the 80's rock people, this exercise is pretty much the same thing Troy Luccketta plays on the chorus of 'Modern Day Cowboy.' Could make it more interesting and fun to learn?
nice lol but why r the cymbals so broken
Shared practice room, no fear of someone stealing them if he leaves them there.
The Spave closing out Toko.. I mean the Spave closing out anything....
When you do the 16s between the ride and the left foot, please make at least some effort to look like it's difficult. 😂 Excellent! 👍
You’re only seeing the end of the practice, not the beginning 🤣🤣
Why are the cymbals cracked

Great video, yeah, but can we talk about the serious Jimmy Neutron look that Nate was channeling in this?
Hi, I`m new to this channel. What`s with the broken cymbals?
They broke
He doesn't care. You may take it as an excuse for that he doesn't sound too good.. But respect guy anyway :))
It goes with the broken beats 😀
@@itwasbetterwithhats820 he may simply replace these with his own for the video
He also believes great drummers can make anything sound good, so It's a personal challenge for him
nice
those hissy pies are sizzlin!
time to get new cymbals lol
