Sorry I forgot to add that. It is the Dolica Proline, I just added a link under the description.
Under the video is a link to blog post where I show some photos of the tripod in action. I am still happy with this tripod and plan to do a followup video soon. I will make sure I show some video of a dslr on the tripod in that video.
The MeFoto line is a great collection of small tripods. For a little more money you can get The Benro MeFoto RoadTrip (the MeFoto BackPacker is shown in the video I think) which is only 2" longer when folded, but is taller with a reversible center column. The center column and one leg are both removable and can be joined to create a monopod as well, giving you a little extra flexibility. Still comes in several colors and with a great carrying case. Love mine!
All great information - you are right. I plan to do an update video in a few more months with some of my experiences but in general I am still in love. Just a tip to all - don't be a total noob and leave the QR plate at home when you go on vacation, makes the tripod a bit less useful! :/
Hi Netto- It will work. I just tested with my 5DM3 and 70-200 2.8. The head holds that just fine. Now there are two positions for the legs, I would not use the narrow position so you will lose a good bit of height but it all feels quite sturdy. I am still quite happy with this tripod but I would like to try their Benro A0690T - it doesn't have the center column that is stuck in the up position but folds down just as small.
I rarely extend it that far, I agree it becomes less stable but you have two positions for the legs and when they are at their widest position it is safe and stable. Show me a tripod that is as small and has sturdier legs? For me this was about portability and travel friendly and I am very happy.
I have used it with a 5DM3 and Canon 70-200 f/2.8 and it is fine BUT to feel safe I always use the wider leg position when I have that heavy gear on so you sacrifice lots of height. Hope that helps.
I will do a follow up review soon, I still really like this tripod and it is working well for me after nearly 6 months of use.
Awesome. I need to do a followup video with some tips, I am still loving mine. One tip. Attach the camera so that the quick release plate knob is under the lens, this way you are less likely to accidentally grab it thinking it is the ball head knob. It has happened to me a couple of times now. What camera you sticking on top?
It is in their higher end model, the MeFoto A1350Q1T Roadtrip. Sometimes I wish I had sprung for that but I really can't complain, I love the size this compacts down too, fits inside my camera bag even :)
I saw that the other day- it is $90 more. I think I would probably still get the MeFoto Travel Tripod Kit (shown in my video above) and save but it is a tough call and if you want a bit more versatility the RoadTrip looks great.
I haven't tried those Dolicas, I do like the very budget models from Dolica so this may be good too. I do notice they state that it is for lighter cameras ILCs and 4/3rds. I plan to do a follow up review of my Benro soon, I love it, especially the head - it is small but solid and very smooth to adjust. Hope that helps.
I bought this tripod before you posted this video because of its size (extended and folded) and its price. You should mention that this tripod is just one of a series of MeFoto tripods, varying in size and weight. You can find all the series on eBay or Amazon and then make your choice by your personal taste. Also, there's a whole other series of carbon tripods. Anyway, after watching this, I'm sure I have made the right decision. Thanks again Toby!
Well rating and tip over stability are too different things. Don't get me wrong I love this tripod and the head is certainly able to hold serious weight but when it is on the last legs, and they are locked at the narrow position it feels a bit tippy. I rarely use it at that height without moving the legs to the wider positions which causes you to lose some height.
After going through the video again I now see how the center pole works. Though it telescopes it is always locked in the up position. With that feature/shortcoming I am happy I have the Globe Trotter. I may have a travel tripod that is on the heavier, bigger & more costly side but for that tiny inconvenience I have gotten a lot bigger bang for my buck.
Thank you- I have one photo on the blog and I plan to add more (blog post is inked above.)
Benro MeFoto? I thought they were two different companies?
Good explanations, very complete. Thank you for this presentation.
I've seen this tripod at the Photo Show in Paris last week, and ordered the RoadTrip version via Amazon, because too few shops deliver it in France for now. I'm waiting for it, and impatient to use it in the real life.
Thanks - I think I wish I had bought the roadtrip version instead but love how small this all packs down too. Enjoy!
Just got mine in the mail today and its great! Thanks for the recommendation....
the new generation of this tripod can convert into a monopod!
That is actually a different model. This is the Travel Tripod and the Road Trip and Backpackers, that look very similar can convert to monopods. Also watch REVIEW: Dolica TRX570 vs Mefoto Travel Tripod
I have watched both video and just bought the mefoto you recommended in the video. The quality is great. But i wish i knew that model before I bought this one since I was struggling to make a chose between tripod and monopod. That one has both function and seems more cost effective?
Jiawei Bu I too think I wish I had bought the one that converts to a monopod but a cheap monopod is cheap www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/888548-REG/magnus_dxm_250_4_section_monopod.html?BI=4773&KBID=5287 Though you can always return the one you just bought.
I am gonna go north Michigan to shoot the leaves this weekend. It's too late to buy another one. But thank you for the recommendation any way. You may add this info to your video so that other people may not regret like us :)
I just bought one at Amazon. Thanks for the review.
Hey, what do you think of the Dolica TX570? It looks very similar to this tripod and much cheaper.
Does it shake a lot? I have a Canon 60D with 18-135 lens. Is this tripod enough for my camera?
while it is good to know how this tripod unfolds and how the legs extend it would be good to see a DSLR mounted on it thank you
Hi! Nice review! Well, I'm from Brazil and planning to buy a lot of equipo at Amazon when going to USA next semester since my T4i and 24-105L was stolen in Chile.
Researching, I found myself reading a lot of reviews of this little tripod. Do you know if it would resist a 6D w/ a 24-105L or a 70-200 2.8 lens? I don't know, seeing your video it seems not that sturdy. Do you know other tripod options for travelling (not so bulky for hiking and that would fit an airplane hand luggage compartment)?
Thank you very much for the video. Sounds complete and only had a question about the stability on rough land, I use a tripod with stainless steel spikes while shooting outdoor. Are they also available for this model? And can I ask what the difference is between the aluminium and carbon model, which one is recommended? Thanks in advance for your reply, cheers.
Hi Vincent - No spikes in the feet and it is something that I miss at times. Carbon model is lighter - that is pretty much the only difference.
The next model up from the one in this video, the RoadTrip model, does come with spikes. It is a pound heavier and a few inches longer folded, but you get 10" more max height, an adjustable center column, monopod conversion, etc. as well.
nice review, you made me want to buy it :)) .. i'm goin to use to to compact camera is it worth it ? ( sony RX100 ii )
I didn't get the name, or the see the link to the other cheap tripod u mentioned?
The center post on my Globe Trotter can reverse so that you can place the camera securely underneath the locked legs and closer to the ground. Does the backpacker not do this? You pull out and reverse it by unscrewing the hook doodad at the bottom of the post.
Nope - this model does not offer that. It is cheaper though. If I were to buy again I would likely get the RoadTrip www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/892889-REG/Benro_a1350q1t_MEFOTO_A1351QA_Tripod_Kit.html?BI=4773&KBID=5287 so I have the option of monopod and reversing center column.
Is this good for landscape photography? does it wobble when winds are there?
At it's full height it can be wobbley - but so are all other tripods that weigh this little and fold down so small. There is a hook from the center column that you can use to add stability.
MeFoto or FotoPro?
Is the ballhead removable to utilize other camera heads? Regards
It is. I originally didn't think it was but later discovered that it is indeed removable.
They should've made the center post adjustable.
Good one!
No, I do not agree that this "tripod" is worthy. Sorry.
Look at the size of those last leg segments (10mil), and then put your thousand bucks camera on it.
What happened with the monopod transformation?
The backpacker model, which is what he is reviewing, does not convert to a monopod. The next one up (RoadTrip) and the even larger versions do. The Roadtrip model, which I own, weighs a pound more and is a few inches longer when folded. However, for that pound of weight you get the monopod ability, capacity of 17 pounds (versus less than 9 for the version in this video), about 10 inches more in max height, and a center column that that adjusts down to address the macro issue he mentioned. Visually, it looks pretty much identical to the one in the video, only a little bigger/beefier, and comes in all the same cool colors (if you care about that). That being said, I am tempted to pick up this smaller version to have for daytrip hiking excursions where I don't plan on doing any work close to the ground. These tripods are so cheap that you can own both for less than what many other quality tripods cost.
Justin Stephen Hi Justin, thanks for the info, i ordered both from Amazon uk i will make my decision tomorrow when i get them both. Cheers !
Oakley Store What did you decide?
It is rated for 17 pounds... Thats enough for atleast a 300m 2.8.
I enjoyed your informative video.
