    Great review, covered the important stuff and got the point! One thing you didn't cover which is pretty critical, are the pull mechanisms for setting the leg angle metal and is it firm in it's hold of the other positions or do the legs flex / push down with weight in the other angles? Also, mefoto notes only 2 positions but does this tripod actually have 3 like virtually every other tripod on the market (25, 50, 80?) or something like that? thanks!

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  5 лет назад

      Hey thanks so much and sorry for overlooking that point! The leg angle locks are metal and they hold firmly in place, but depending on the weight you might see a little flex in the legs themselves especially when spread out wider (also depending on how much they're extended)... there are only 2 positions like they mention, not sure of the angles but it's the standard and one wider. Around 0:40 seconds in the video you can kind of see the locks and the 2 spots where they would lock in. Hope that helps!

    Hi Scott,
    Thanks for a great review.
    What is the heaviest DSLR/Lens combo that you have used with the tripod?
    Thanks,
    Manish

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I used to use it a lot with a Nikon D810 and 70-200 2.8 VR II (total about 2.5kg/5.5lb) without any issues except the slight sag after taking off your hand from the camera as I mentioned. I did semi long exposures with that combo photographing fireworks and it seemed to work just fine. :)

      Thank you Scott,
      That is of great help as I plan to use a Canon 5D Mark III with a 70-200 F2.8 USM II which I believe is a little bit heaver that your Nikon set up but close enough.
      Thanks again.

    Quick question: why did you choose this over the Globetrotter if you were looking for something more sturdy and higher?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 лет назад +3

      Right, wasn't really looking for higher, but sturdiness would always be appreciated even in a compact design. My "complaints" were just for people to be aware that there is a limit in any tripod of this size and weight and not to expect more, but like I said for this price and size it's exactly what you should expect and you can't really get much more without compromising something. Definitely more than satisfied and would go for the Globetrotter if I did really need the size.

    thanks for the review. I was torn between the Mefoto Roadtrip and the Manfrotto Element Big...very similar. Do you know anything about the Element? Thanks for any info.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  7 лет назад +1

      Angela Delgado Thanks for watching :) I've never used that particular Manfrotto but besides the very slight size difference they seem to be nearly identical. I know from experience that both brands seem very reliable as well so you'd probably be happy with either one :)

      Scott Dumas I got the Manfrotto Element & while i think it's a solid tripod, I may be returning it. The one thing that I can't deal with is the plate that attaches to bottom of my camera. When camera is turned sideways to shoot in portrait, the camera slides...as if it's not tightened enough. However I tightened it as much as possible. I used a Nikon D750 w/a 24-300...extremely frustrating. I may give the Roadtrip a chance. Thanks again!!

      Angela Delgado if you do I hope you like it! I've used the D750 with a 70-200 2.8 on it and had no trouble with the plate sliding. You could always try another plate with the manfrotto too but I'm not sure which is good and which isn't.

      Hello Scott...You can use a L-bracket as a good solution. Also good for vertical/horisontal change.

      +117166322495149032706 Very true. And to be honest, I've actually somehow never invested in good L bracket. I think it's about time... :)

    It looks a lot like my Manfrotte befree tripod.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  7 лет назад

      Cactus Tweeter in size and capacity they're definitely similar. I've always had all Arca Swiss plates though (until recently) so the mefoto worked better, plus I prefer twist locks on the legs and the monopod option is useful. I love Manfrotto though and own a bunch of their stuff- hardly anything to complain about. If I can get my hands on the befree maybe I'll do a little comparison!

    This is a timely review for me. I am back in the USA (after an absence of 5-years) visiting family & friends and refreshing my camera gear. I have missed having a tripod with me on my travels (I travel with a backpack for personal gear and a Pelican 1510 for my photography equipment). Space and weight come at a premium. I've been researching small lightweight travel tripods and saw the MeFoto . . . your review pretty much cinched by buying decision. I'm still enjoying your videos Scott so keep them coming. www.IndochinePhotography.me. :-)

      Thank you so much! Really glad to hear that and always happy to hear from you! :) Love your photos as well, particularly the portraits like Juan Pablo :)
      By the way, how do you like the Pelican 1510? I've actually been thinking about getting one- for now I use a ThinkTank Airport bag and love it (review coming soon) but it's still a soft sided bag, so the Pelican would offer more protection.
      Thanks again!

    • @stephenf.dennstedt5553
      @stephenf.dennstedt5553 7 лет назад

      Thank you my friend. ThinkTank makes nice gear but I've experienced some camera damage with soft sided bags (not ThinkTank). I needed something bulletproof and "waterproof." I've had my gear tossed on top of chicken buses in Latin America in pouring rain and everything got drenched (travelling is a learning experience). And when flying there's no guarantee that your equipment won't be checked (even though it conforms to carryon rules & regulations). Soft bags going through conveyor systems can be problematic (I've had straps and buckles torn off my bags and packs). And the baggage handlers are none too gentle. Pelicans are REALLY tough and come with a lifetime guarantee. I think it's the solution for me (but others might disagree). Adding a couple of padlocks (not TSA locks) when using local transportation (taxis, buses, tuk-tuks, river boats, etc) provides a lot of security and you can't cut through a Pelican with a knife.

      Man, that's some serious travel. I'm jealous of your life haha. I have my fingers crossed that all goes smoothly on my upcoming trip back to the states but I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable if I'm forced to check my ThinkTank, nevermind more extreme travel.
      I'll definitely get a 1510 when I have the chance, thanks for the input. Any specific recommendations I should know about before purchasing one?

      TrekPak makes an incredible organizing system for Pelican and you can get an optional lid organizer that's very useful. www.amazon.com/dp/B01KMK8G4O/ref=sr_ph_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493214205&sr=sr-1&keywords=pelican+1510+with+trekpak+and+lid+organizer

      That looks perfect! I think I'll have to pick one of those up when I'm in the states, they're much more expensive over here it seems. Thanks!
