This was one instance where I was happy to see a replacement, as Joan Jett had departed and Ana Gasteyer had taken over by the time I saw the show. Gasteyer was hilarious as Columbia and during “The Time Warp” when Jett had played an electric guitar solo, Gasteyer played an electric violin solo a la “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” and the audience went nuts.
The crew that put this revival together understood that with the Rocky Horror Show, elasticity is crucial. No two shows are ever alike simply because of the phenomenon. Whereas other stagings have learned the hard way after fighting to give every audience the same show, the 2000 revival fully embraced not only the chaos, but it also worked to integrate the talents of its cast. It was clear Joan Jett didn't have much acting experience, but she had a love for the show that stretched back to the earliest days of the phenomenon in Los Angeles and she had a name synonymous with rock & roll. Wisely, they didn't put her in a sequined top hat or make her tap dance. Instead, they re-conceived Columbia as a badass rocker groupie and strapped on her guitar to let her shred as only Joan Jett could. Dick Cavett may have droned on and on from his Narrator's chair, but he was also a comforting voice for those older audience members that had no idea what they'd walked into. Gilbert Gottfried would stop a scene to torture an actor with observations so beyond the pale you almost expected him to break into his legendary take on the "Aristocrats" joke until they broke into laughter. Frank-N-Furter was the only character the directors granted their permission for to tell an audience member to "shut the f--k up" or mock them in return and the audiences LOVED IT. If you'd seen the show once, you could return the next month to an entirely different experience, with a new celebrity narrator, be it Sally Jesse Raphael or Penn & Teller or Jerry Springer. In all, the revival took on the daunting task of redeeming the disasterous 1975 Broadway run that only lasted a month and that scandalized Broadway purists after one of the oldest theaters had unforgivably irreversible renovations made. It definitely deserved a longer life, but like the COVID-19 pandemic two decades later, the 9/11 attacks impacted all of the shows running at the time.
What a revival this was! That cast, the Circle in the Square was used so well in that production - I’d give anything to go back and see that one more time! Great post for Halloween Spiderwoman-thank you so much and Happy Halloween!
You can feel the electric energy in the room perfectly through this clip. Based on their expressions around the 2:35 mark, it looks like they're having a great time! As always, thanks for sharing your footage with us!
I love this, as a Brit Rocky Horror is a institution and to see a clear recording of this Revival has been a dream come true, this made Halloween a little more pleasant thank you aurora
Oh I soooo enjoyed this clip! Back in the late 80's my friends and I used to go to midnight showings of Rocky Horror. Such great memories! Thank you Spiderwoman!!!
this almost made me cry honestly, rocky horror will always feel like home and you can tell they clearly put so much of themselves into this which made it special! is there any way to find this performance in full online???
Hey there! I thought I posted a comment but I can’t see it. I am a media archivist for Joan. We didn’t even have this footage! It’s great and I wanted to ask you about it. Thanks!
@@storybellz Basically signing a contract to stake your claim to part of something. Basically for the revival they got a bunch of famous rock stars to play the big roles and some of them like Joan Jett among other big names like Perks Of Being A Wallflower were not allowed to be on the cast recording because it was being released by a different record company than the ones they artists all ready had contracts to. Joan Jett also was a massive bitch because she wanted it done by her producers(assumedly so she can get her royalties) but the higher ups denied her this request and walked off the set, but from some of the old BroadwayWorld forum posts about this at the time she looked like she didn't really want to be there in the first place so maybe it was a "look just come out does this and you'll get a fat check" type of celebrity role, so who knows really what went on backstage.
This was the production that sparked my love for The Rocky Horror Show. I still listen to this cast recording all the time!
This revival was strong all around and deserved better reviews than it received.
Raul Esparza ❤️ ❤️
Same!
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 do you have the full show?
This is the most flawless version of this song that I've heard. They both have so much talent and enthusiasm that it pumps the whole audience up!
the way joan and daphne look at each other 👀
One giant hot lesbian mess, and omg is it hot

I heard that Ana G. was great when she took over. No doubt it led directly to her doing Elphaba in "Wicked" in Chicago and elsewhere.

As always, you surprise! Thanks so much, Ms. Spiderwoman!
Glad you liked!
I love Daphne Rubin-Vega and Joan Jett.
omg i grew up listening to cast recording of rent, i always loved her mimi
Is there a full version of this bootleg? 😍💜
From the Pajama Party and the Blackhearts. I would never think a Latin Free-stylist and a Rocker could pull this off, but they did!!!
Perfect for today! Thanks for uploading.
Ur so right
Whyyyy is this the first time I'm seeing this. Damn I would have loved to see this in person
THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER
And that's how SWAGGER was re spelt JOAN JETT.
I freaking love her electric guitar solo in Time warp.
this almost made me cry honestly, rocky horror will always feel like home and you can tell they clearly put so much of themselves into this which made it special! is there any way to find this performance in full online???
Saw this show 2xs and totally could have went back for more...so much fun! Great memories 👌 ❤️

That's awesome!
OMG YES!!!!!! So much YES!
So cool
Trying to find a clip for months! THANK YOU. Yeah i prefer the cast album better than this! I love Daphne!
I was lucky enough to see this is person and dance the Time Warp with Dick Cavett!
I am so bummed that I never made the trip from Boston to NYC to see this!!!! Big mistake! 🖤🖤🖤🖤
I saw this production… Dick Cavett was Narrator that night. He was funny!!!
Joan Jett is a flawless specimen
Joan Jett was not on the recording for contractual reasons. Kristen Lee Kelly (her understudy) killed it.
This is one cast I would have killed to see! I was 10 at the time and sadly too young. But wow!
Joan Jett is on the broadway cast album.
Joan Jett is so smokin hot
Ooky Spooky! Some Carrie clips would be perfect for today ;)
😻😻😻😻
I’m sooooo gay
I know this is super random, but any chance of more The Producers clips?
and to this day joan jett has never signed her equity contact
Well, there's still time---this production is only 20 years old.
What do you mean? What is involved in an equity contract?
