Two reasons. One, it was originally a British creature... with everything British in it, except for the two American actors, Brad and Janet. (Same happened with Monty Python and the Holy Grail.) Also, the studio did not believe in it, and wanted to bury it... Without marketing, it had no real chance in the theatres. This movie is so dear to my heart. I was in 9th grade gym class, and there was a weird kid wearing a button that said “I can’t even think straight” this was the 90s when everything was “gay”. In the Summer of 1978 I was 14 and myself and a few friends took the bus to see this in a midnight show. The suburbs were different in the 70's- Our parents didn't know where we were, nor cared. It didn't occur to any one of us that the busses didn't run after midnight. So, when the movie was over, we hitchhiked home. Actually walked most of the way. The 70's in the suburbs of NYC. Can't imagine a better time to grow up.
And just like *that* I'm 15 again in 1975, going to the movies with my older brother. Bugger the age restrictions! We watched it until it was banned in my country. Then we proceeded to love this film after the ban was lifted. Brother is gone now and I watch it alone on DVD, imagining the sights and smells of the movie theatre while the entire audience is singing along. What a masterpiece!
I saw it when I was 13 in 1977. It took a while to get to the RAAF Airbase Cinema in Forest Hill near Wagga NSW, Australia. What a fantastic movie. It changed my life.
I was 13, My dad had taken me, my little sister and her friend out to the drive in. The headliner was Superman The Movie, and after it was done, we all kind of sat around in the car not knowing if we were going to watch the next movie or not, but then the Lips came on the screen and my dad woke up and couldn't get us out of there fast enough!
I do this all the time. I did it just now. While dancing to the damn thing. I might be 64, but I've seen this so many times I know the words, the phrasing, the beats. It entertains me. Sort of startles others.

For anyone that doesn't know, those are Magenta's lips and Riff Raff's voice. There's a story behind that, as well. Patricia Quinn (Magenta) wanted nothing to do with the film, at first, so Richard O'Brian (Riff Raff) did everything he could to convince her. In the end, they both agreed that as long as she got to sing this song for the opening she would do the film. All went according to plan.....until it came time to edit the film. During that process O'Brian replaced her vocals with his own.....behind her back, no less. She didn't find out about it until she watched it for the first time and by then it was too late.
@@eddienunez8076 Oh, I agree, everything is as it should be!!......BUT......he didn't have to do it in such a shady fashion. That probably hurt her more than the change being made.
Not exactly true, she didn’t want to do the film until she saw the wardrobe for it, yes she wanted to sing the song but knew all along someone else was but still did the lips for it knowing full well it was Richard O’Brien singing. There was no backhandedness. Unless she herself is lying.
Here are some references I caught :p -Michael Reenie: British actor, perhaps best remembered for his starring role as the space visitor Klaatu in the film The Day the Earth Stood Still. -Flash Gordon: Flash Gordon is the hero of a space opera adventure comic strip created by Alex Raymond. First published January 7, 1934. (A movie was made in 1980, but that's after RHPS.) -Claude Rains: British-American film and stage actor. He started as the invisible man in the homonym movie of 1933. -Fay Wray: Canadian-born American actress best remembered for starring as Ann Darrow in the 1933 film King Kong. -Anne Francis: American actress, as said in the lyrics, she was in the sci-fi film Forbidden Planet of 1956. -Leo G. Carroll: English actor. He played Prof. Gerald Deemer in the 1955 movie Tarantula! -Janette Scott: English actress. She started in the film The Day of the Triffids, released in 1962. -Dana Andrews: American film actor. He started in Night Of The Demon (1957). -George Pal: Hungarian-American animator, film director and producer. When Worlds Collide (1951) was produced by him. His wife was Elisabeth "Zsoka" Pal. -R.K.O: RKO Pictures was an American film production and distribution company. Producer Val Lewton worked into a low-budget horror unit. King Kong (1933) is one of the most important films produced by RKO.
Saw this in early 1980s. In a small provincial town it was an eye opener. Way ahead of its time. People were shocked by its openness. 40 years later its still a classic.
Absolutely splendid. Hard to improve on. It's like layered nostalgia. The movies referenced in the song were antique and quirky to the folks who saw the film when it was new. Now I find myself looking back at myself looking back at other people who are looking back at the golden age of sci fi cinema and writing it a crazy love letter. It's like watching ancestors practice ancestor worship. Indescribably wonderful.
@@flyingmerkel6did you forget? its astounding, time is fleeting, madness takes its toll, ... that time and place is here and now, if you want to go there ...its just a jump to the left ...
This song is so bizarrely haunting and evocative, for what is essentially a parody, as well as a celebration of the old black & White B-Movies of the 1940s and 50s. It has such an off-kilter resonance to it that is amazing.
Patricia wanted to sing this song but Richard o’Brian said no because he was singing it, but he let her use her lips for the intro with Richard o’Brian’s voice
The play that this film is based on traditionally has Magenta's actress also be the one singing this song (check out the Original London Cast soundtrack to hear Quinn singing this song).
I'm sad of finding out how much Patricia wanted to sing this an she couldn't. If you check previous versions of this song with her on the vocals, she does an amazing job.
It’s rough because you could say it’s her song, but even from the first time I heard this song, I was mesmerized by Richard’s voice. It’s so frigging 70s and it’s perfect.
I remember the first time I played Rocky listening to the crowd roar singing this song. I was excited and still getting over a really catastrophic break up. The debauchery and pure energy of this show really helped me. And 5 years later, I find myself in the same place again.. Rocky Horror was therapy in such a raw time in my life. This year, I’M the dom. No more being a slave to my own depression. Giving into absolute pleasure, flexing harder and larger than ever. I made sure to work out extra extra hard this year. Thanks Rocky 💪
My parents had this on VHS when I was a kid, and they kept it "hidden" so not in the tape library. However after I found it they did not stop me watching it, and I loved it. I was singing along to the songs longe before I understood what some of them meant.
I saw this film classic in the 1970s and was completely smitten, mesmerized. The opening song was akin to Beethoven's Ode to Joy and played homage to a period of innocence and exuberance. Pure unadulterated fun & bliss. This song sank deep into my unconscious psyche. I lived life in the 1950s and indeed went frequently to the local late-night double feature picture shows in my home town. I saw Tarantula in 1955 when it came out and had nightmares for years afterward. I saw Dana Andrews in the 1957 " Curse of the Demon " the source of which was "Casting the Runes". And it was today nearly 70 years after the fact that I happened to see Dana Andrews, white hair and wizened face, doing a guest appearance on an old re-run episode of "Love Boat". I knew that face and gradually came to his name "Dana Andrews". And once I had called up the name, "Dana Andrews" - these lyrics and music flowed forth in my mind . . Michael Rennie was ill The Day the Earth Stood Still But he told us where we stand And Flash Gordon was there In silver underwear Claude Rains was The Invisible Man . . And I really got hot When I saw Janette Scott Fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills Dana Andrews said "Prunes!" Gave him the runes And passing them used lots of skills. All I could think about was: Dana Andrews said "Prunes!" Gave him the runes and passing them used lots of skills" I agree with the comment above: Please stand for the National Anthem.
Man this was part of my playlist when I worked at Starbucks (we hijacked the Muzak machine) among many other proudly gay songs to be sang by this confusingly cis man. My baristas sang with me.
I had long blond hair, so I dressed up as Riff Raff and then Put my ponytail on top for the "Banana" knot RIff has later in the film! MY Friend came in drag as a short, fat Frank 'N Furter!! LOL IT was 1987-88 and it was Epic! I've seen the film over 175 times.
There's a timeless quality to this song I feel; while layered with nostalgia and memories it also feels like time won't dull this tune and you can even listen to it without watching the rest of the movie as it perfectly captures a certain time and the concept of late night flicks in general. Truly something to cherish and keep listening to again and again through the years 💖
I think you're right, and the funny part about that is how absolutely steeped in its own time and place it was. I mean, you have to know a thing or two about 1950's-1970's movies to get any of the references, or even know what a "double feature" is.
Richard Obrien has a uniquely gorgous voice! I just watched this movie for the first time yesterday. When I heard this beautiful song alongside the unique visuals I knew I would absolutely love the film. I did ❤
Wow. I love that people are discovering and loving this film so many years after I did. I'm almost jealous for people seeing it for the first time now.
RHPS makes me sad now. I am sad for Tim. I am sad I didnt get it then. I miss the thrill of seeing this in theatres (often). Maybe Its projection, but I cry at most of the songs. This movie has one of the biggest cult followings of all time. It's still played in many theaters every weekend. I literally just saw it last night at the drive in. It's not the same but man is it fun.
This at the midnight movie in 1980's Utah was such a seminal part of my teenage years. So many good memories associated with this movie, that crowd, and those days. Brilliant. A masterpiece as an album, a stage musical, and a movie.
I first saw this movie in May 1978 at a theater in Kansas City, Kansas. Myself and a friend had driven to Kansas City for a science fiction convention. When we learned that the Rocky Horror Picture Show was being shown at midnight in a local movie theater, we went to watch since we had never seen it before. We had heard about it. At this showing, nobody was dressed up as characters from the movie but many audience members had memorized the dialogue and they were talking back to the characters on the screen.
In October 1996, I was at an SF convention (ArchCon?) in St. Louis, Missouri when some of the filkers decided to perform this song. Since I was the only bass player at the convention and I did have my electric bass with me, I was drafted to help them perform this song. I did my best despite the fact that I am not Joe Osborn.
Happy New Year... it's the first day of 2023, the sun's past the yardarm, champagne is chilling and Rocky Horror Picture Show is primed to go... 🙌🏾💋💋💋💙
I remember when me and friends would dress the characters and do the dances it was awesome crazy time 45yrs ago but this movie still lives on forever in my heart ❤ ♥
This song is so interesting. It's so easy to listen to outside of the context of rocky horror considering it's an amazing song, but when you watch it with those horrifying disembodied lips, it sends the perfect signal to the audience that this movie is going to be WEIRD! It's amazing!
I can't really explain it but this movie always puts a smile on my face and brings a mood. I can't help but be ecstatic when these songs play. I don't care about politics, I don't care about any message people attach to the film, it's just pure fun in a complete non judgemental weird atmosphere and I get lost in it every single time.
I grew up in a very free minded household, I was 9 years old singing this whole album but still never actually seen the movie at that point. My mom knew I wanted to see it I knew every song by heart. The only place it was showing was a triple x theater as there matinee!!! Lmfao for real! But she checked into and was sort of sure that I wouldn’t see previews of porn if we got there after a certain time and left promptly after! So we got dressed up and brought all of our props for the show because luckily for me this was an interactive showing and people in the audience squirted water guns for song “there’s a light over in the Frankenstein place” and we had news papers and on and on all the key points acted out! My favorite of course was “time warp “ good memories and thank you mom for not being a prude!!!!!!!!!❤️✌️
This is an awesome sharing Michele. I used to lie to my parents and tell them it was a different ending every time. Thats why we had to see it every week lol. Early 80s was a time we had to be inventive. Well, lie. There was no internet so they had to root thru our stuff to find out what we were up to lol.
Always loved this soundtrack. I saw the movie for the first time at a midnight showing at a little artsy theater in Tucson, AZ one night when my friend Reto and I were doing some mushrooms in 1973. I was a junior at the university. It was a blast, a lot of people were in costume, singing along, and I've loved the movie ever since.
I was obsessed with this movie when I was a teenage in the early 90's I first saw it when I was visiting relatives and they had a VHS bootleg from Japan. Apparantly, it was released on VHS from Japan long before the US. I made a copy while I was there, sure, it had Japanese subtitles, but who cared?. I played it for the first time for my mom and she was hooked from this song. She is a huge old school and B-Movie horror fan. Just from the mentions in the song and naming the movies they came from, she was good to go.
I recently saw this musical live and the girl singing this song was amazing but even better is the audience did the Ooooo's and Aaaaa's. It was magicial
I remember seeing it for the first time in 1975 when I was in University. I had no idea what I was in for. I still have me playing card from that show. I cannot count the numerous times I have see and absolutely love this movie.
I watched in 1975 at a theater on Union Street SF. I smoked a blunt and by the end of the movie, I was stunned. WTF have I just watched. Then later in 1978 at the Strand on Market St, SF at midnight every Saturday I watched all the freaks attending. It was great.
In Criminal Minds, there was an episode called, "The Longest Night." Tim Curry starred as the Prince of Darkness Killer. He played the role masterfully! He was a complete disaster in that episode. He had nasty teeth, dirty clothes, drove a disgusting 1980 camper covered in rust and dirt. He was a complete psycho in that episode. It is my favourite Criminal Minds episode ever. I am actually looking for a Prince of Darkness camper to drive around.
Saw it live for the first time at Tampa Bay comic con this year, was so confused when they wrote a V on my head and called me a virgin, it was great. Thanks hell on heels!
I was made to wade in a pool of KY and pick out the bananas with my mouth, without leaving tooth marks. Then I had to stuff a giant size H brassiere with hot dogs lubricated in KY before a timer rang a bell. The brassiere had to be, as they put it, "plump, perky, and juicey,"by the time the timer rang. This was hard to do with lubricated hotdogs slipping everywhere and slipping out of the brassiere. There was also whip cream boobs that I had to eat the cherry nipple off the boobs without letting the cherry slip down nor damage the whip cream boobs while blindfolded. There were a few other rituals I had to do before being devirginised. After being devirginised, I got a spiked dog collar with my name on it. It is now one of my most prized possessions.

Riff-Raff had a Cool singing voice! Great film!!
Why was it banned?
I was 13, My dad had taken me, my little sister and her friend out to the drive in. The headliner was Superman The Movie, and after it was done, we all kind of sat around in the car not knowing if we were going to watch the next movie or not, but then the Lips came on the screen and my dad woke up and couldn't get us out of there fast enough!

It was the right thing to do.

Here are some references I caught :p
-Michael Reenie: British actor, perhaps best remembered for his starring role as the space visitor Klaatu in the film The Day the Earth Stood Still.
-Flash Gordon: Flash Gordon is the hero of a space opera adventure comic strip created by Alex Raymond. First published January 7, 1934. (A movie was made in 1980, but that's after RHPS.)
-Claude Rains: British-American film and stage actor.

I love Richard O'Brien's talent and voice, if it was not for him The Rocky Horror Picture Show would of never existed.
If not for Tim Curry’s iconic performance, the whole thing would have fallen apart and never become a cult classic. 💋👠🎩
Yes that could be true. Tim Curry is a great actor and a top performer, but Richard wrote the Show and the Music.
Richard O’Brien is actually a transvestite. Listen to don’t dream it be it. He wanted to be just the same as fey Ray dig it
Yea and he is also married to a woman.
Joe Rodriguez Richard now identifies as transgender and takes female hormones. I wish Richard would write another explosive and subversive musical! 😁

Ahh....Great movie....and all those 1950s Sci-Fi B movies... fantastic...they don't make them like that anymore.
I think it's meant to add to the movie's gender-bending theme - a male voice with female lips sets the tone for the film
I'm sad of finding out how much Patricia wanted to sing this an she couldn't. If you check previous versions of this song with her on the vocals, she does an amazing job.
interesting compromise
It’s rough because you could say it’s her song, but even from the first time I heard this song, I was mesmerized by Richard’s voice. It’s so frigging 70s and it’s perfect.
Those lips forever a part of cinema history 💋

And once I had called up the name, "Dana Andrews" - these lyrics and music flowed forth in my mind . .

I think you're right, and the funny part about that is how absolutely steeped in its own time and place it was. I mean, you have to know a thing or two about 1950's-1970's movies to get any of the references, or even know what a "double feature" is.

Agreed. It will never be surpassed.
What a great film this is! Like an old friend, never ceases to bring a smile.

This song is so interesting. It's so easy to listen to outside of the context of rocky horror considering it's an amazing song, but when you watch it with those horrifying disembodied lips, it sends the perfect signal to the audience that this movie is going to be WEIRD! It's amazing!
I listen to this in my car on its own all the time. Such a great song.
Climbed a tree, put the recently clipped cable in the HBO do-dads, and watched it on channel six (Long Island) around 1977. Loved it.
It's pure escapism...
Timeless and elegant! I'm a massive Tim Curry fan. The beauty of the clip is eternal. 😈
Dana Pidd, I agree. Tim Curry is other worldly in this movie, it's hard to put into words just how amazing he played Frank-N-Furter.
That's a very good way of describing it
Sadly Tim Curry suffered a stroke and is in wheelchair.. He's still handsome as ever!!

Where I used to reside locally, the last showing was in 2000. But I kept going to Story, Indiana and got nine more years of Rocky. The very last showing in Story was a well known event. It was going to be the last showing there. Since it was an outside showing, the disaster we left was extra huge! Some people brought in condoms filled with KY to start a fight. Super soakers filled whip cream, many blow up dolls made it to the last showing with bananas and hotdogs stuffed in their mouths. Brassiere slingshots for water balloons were common. Pie fights would break out randomly. When things, started getting too quiet, the hosts would sound a siren and start throwing all manner of hotdogs, bananas, sausages, condoms, diaphragms, dirty underwear, dog collars, sex toys and feather boas. I’m only fourteen and I’ve watched this with my family on vhs when we had it (I think it’s lost) and it’s just great to listen and dance to this(ps dr. Frankfurter is my fav character of this )
I am partial to Riff-Raff - A Handyman. My old VHS is really worn out and full of static. I think I am going to buy the Blu-ray next payday and a digital copy so I may watch it on a laptop when I am on my work break.
Oddly enough this movie/music helped me work through so much shit growing up. I will never be able to thank every person involved enough for their contribution of this work of art to our world.
I've introduced a few people to Rocky Horror over the years, just as my brother did me.
None of my friends over the years didn't love it.
Great songs, fun movie, subversive as hell and way ahead of it's time.
Love this movies a teenager, we all went and joined in. Alot of fun, thanks for this.
Brings back alot of fun time
During this time of year.

As well as 2020😁

Could watch this movie all day, actually i have.
Me and a bunch of teenage mates went to see a midnight showing, we actually thought it was a horror movie...cherrys well and truly popped..
The best show youll ever ever go to.
Thanks Richard
I had an 14 hrs flight to Doha, Qatar. I had this album downloaded to my phone. I had to listen to this song 20 times. 😂
Love the song. Love the film. Love the theatre show. Timeless.
🤍
It's brilliant. We all had the LP when it was commercially available, but did not know what we were actually going to see. Let alone learn. This film is an important part of history. And all my nieces and nephews have been educated. It's only fare to be aware.

Michael Rennie was ill
The day the earth stood still
But he told us where we stand
And Flash Gordon was there
In silver underwear
Claude Raines was the invisible man
Then something went wrong
For Fay Wray and King Kong,
They got caught in a celluloid jam
Then at a deadly pace
It came from outer space,
And this is how the message ran

I knew Leo G. Carroll was over a barrel
When Tarantula took to the hills
And I really got hot
When I saw Janette Scott
Fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills
Dana Andrews said prunes
Gave him the runes
And passing them used lots of skills
But "When worlds collide"
Said George Pal to his bride
"I'm going to give you some terrible thrills"

Saturday nights at the Balboa theater in Newport Beach! Drinking and smoking cloves in the balcony! Great times!
I saw this for the first time the other day, far too late in my film-watching career, absolutely loved Rocky Horror, its so unafraid to be goofy and fun and campy, just a super fun film
This brings back sooo many memories of doing the shadow cast, amazing movie !
I saw this for the first time this month, and I was blown away by the movie and the die hard fans! I want to see it again!
Just perfect for October of 2024. ^w^
Seeing the show again in January. Well into double figures now. Never gets old and has a fantastic message. Don't dream it, be it.
I saw this movie about 17 times in 1980, maybe a bit into 81 too. Back then in Long Beach CA you could still take stuff into the theater, we had a lot of fun!!!! :)
