Get the next project car straight away and rack up 5-6 videos so you can release them weekly to get the continuity. Get the ball rolling asap and keep that format going. Don’t tell people what you’ve got though until you’re almost ready to start releasing the build series. Love the channel guys 👍

Your channel will really take off when you show you/the boys fixing the cars. I realise you don’t want to show tricks of the trade but for 99% of people watching that just won’t be a thing and you have a great rep already so you won’t be losing any work to competitors. Also your analogy of the a photographer giving away their camera settings most of the big you tubers do give away their settings and their businesses don’t suffer for it so I think it’s worth it for you. Keep up the good work

Rick mate, keep it simple, in other words just do what you enjoy doing and what you find most rewarding to put out into the ether! Don't play to the analytics / ever moving goalposts of the YT algorithm. If you do what you most enjoy and what you find moat rewarding, trust me, on a planet with billions of people of predominantly English speaking backgrounds, be it their 1st; 2nd; 4th or 7th language, they still understand English and for all those who don't there's always auto-translated closed captions. If you put out videos that shows you doing the things you love doing or are passionate about, that's infectious and if you do it long enough while remaining true to that ethos an audience WILL find you, and a large audience too - it just won't be overnight, it'll take time because a lot of it will be word of mouth recommendations, the best sort of advertising & referrals money can't buy!
All the best, pal & try collaborating with 44teeth on the bikes a bit & other bike channels like Bike World with the legendary Chris Northover.
All the best anyway in whichever direction you decide on!

Is there a college in Swindon where they do media studies/social media/video/mechanics/apprenticeship, etc, where you could link up with to see if they have any students who are also into cars? If there is, maybe a vlog at the college? Also, maybe you should look for an engine damaged Audi R8, as you have many parts, restore and repair and then sell tickets to win it, like a number of other tubers do. I have no real mechanical no how, will never be able to afford an R8, etc, but watch everyone of your vlogs for the knowledge that you and your team have, as well as all the banter! I also have a Seat Ateca Fr 2.0T DSG 4WD which I believe you quite like. Carry on the good work - if you build it, they will come!

I was at some eventwhere a guy showed his "secrets of his trade", which was truing/building bicycle wheels. He said it was great to show to school kids, because the next few weeks, he'd get lots of messed up wheels that the students had been working on their wheels, and they were still (or more) wobbly, so needed his expert hand.
Of course, fair point on the "don't teach your competitors your secret knowledge"...
Also, you should definitely do the things you enjoy. Trying to make material that do well just for the sake of doing well will just lead you down a rabbit hole that most likely leads to misery - because it's impossible to tell what will work and what won't - part of that depends on WHAT other people do on RUclips, and you have zero control over that.

Hi Ricky - Lots of valid comments on a good way forward. There might be channels that get more views but I think (it's obvious which other channels I'm referring to....) the idiocy and laughter at that idiocy delivers a lower quality audience than channels like yours and Salvage Rebuilds do. I think you guys get a high quality audience. I agree strongly that your content could have continuity in following one or two builds and definitely including your bike race weekend. Maybe the youngster videographer idea you guys mentioned would be the means to that end? Love your channel! Cool to know that you guys re-built a McLaren engine for someone here in South Africa!

people will always love to watch the supercars but i think the main reason the 300zx vid did so well is because its more relatable and obtainable for most, its something you can get into and show what your capable of without giving away the 'trade secrets' of your business, the oil pump video although technically great is only ever going to appeal to a small minority of people

The difference between your channel and most other UK car youtubers is that you're coming from a place of a successful business and then joining youtube. Most other UK car youtube channels start just with 1 car stripping it down and fixing it and then normally take it on a road trip or put it on track vs another car. But i could imagine when your running a successful business it would be hard to achieve this. Also most people who watch car youtube channels aren't to Intrested in the technical side of things they just like seeing a car taken apart then fixes up again. If you look at Matt Armstrong when he is taking something apart or putting it back together again it will be a quick clip mixed in with abit of humour and a little voice over aswell but again I can understand this is hard for you when your a business first then youtube 2nd.
As someone who owns a VAG car I really enjoy watching your videos and seeing the comparisons to my BWA engine then to a v10 with the little things.
I hope all you are well and carry on the amazing work

I have been watching your channel for a while. It's great to see a young un applying such attention to detail. I'm an engineer by trade and spent many years on aerospace projects, milling and turning to high spec. It means that I struggle to get anything done properly ( ie to the standard I worked to for years ) whether that's a van respray or a tyre changed and balanced.
Get the technical build on vid as it sets you apart from the " I build loads of engine boss" types.
The cross hatch / honing video had me smiling thinking most people have no idea of what your on about. But If I was building an engine I'd be anal enough to want to know that stuff. Do it right or don't do it.

I absolutely love what you do and if I could go back to my former 16 year old self, I would have gone into a career with cars, instead I ended up as a double glazing installer...LOL
I do have a GTR myself and do a lot of my own maintenance and love to see how you guys do what you do, right from outside the unit, looking at whats in and what's ready to go, to the dyno and jobs you're currently working on...Every time I watch one of your videos I learn something, so value the knowledge you share, thanks.
On another note: I need a hardwire kit for my fuel pumps installed on my GTR, is this something you can do ?

Protecting you're IP and methods of operation are important not to give away I agree.
A lot of what YOU know though is learnt over (served) time and can't simply be picked up from a short video or two, perhaps certain methods need to be guarded of course, especially stuff regarding NDAs but I think a large proportion do watch to learn and take inspiration from your expertise, which not many builders have your level of skill and attention to detail.
Having said that, my preference is the expert building stuff, when you do actually reveal certain methods of precision that your average garage wouldn't even be aware of, just seeing things taken apart generally and rebuilt for me is fascinating...

The variety is good, and personally I enjoy the more technical videos such as the oil pump rebuild. Clearly thats not popular though. More case studies would be good, less walking around talking about waiting for parts. I like the reviews on the good and bad of the various cars you work on, such as poor design/manufacture that will cost in the long run. Shorter rather than longer would be good, max 25 minutes. I like the letters and queries. Perhaps you will never break even on the RUclips costs though and it’s just a case of your general advertising costs to cover it.

I watch the channel for what it is.. please don’t dwell on numbers, those who watch know what you are and do. Keep mixing it up and take the wins as wins and low number vids as you keeping the die hard fans interested.. the oil pump build vid was ace but I can see whey anyone now mechanically interested would be bored.. take the camera out on the bike adventures would be interesting to see that side as we hear a lot but never see it…

I'd like to see a toolbox video, so we can see which one of your lads is the scruffy one regarding his tool's 🤔
I put mine away after every job, mainly so that if I've got anything missing then I know it's on that last job (usually hiding in the scuttle vent) 😁
Keep up the good work boys the channel is great 👍

RE: youtube, I worked for a fella in Heritage Building the other year, he had a full time videographer/social media man at £35K+ a year(up north), It never grew massively past 1k followers(more boss ego stroking than anything), however, on certain subjects you could smash 10k views a video. The best video at 60k+ we sat down for a few hours and really got it planned out. If your looking at a college leaver, there is apprentice funding available but they need on the job leadership, and regular college checkups that your not leading them astray.
Car projects/technical, get your 30-40minutes of useful footage but split it into 3x 10-13mins, Its turns it into constant viewer engagement with 3+ episodes a week. Add that to the Workshop update and its nearing a video a day for relatively the same spend and I'd bet higher viewer count.
I'm no expert, but towards the end before we videographer+ me (IT bloke on a sabbatical/glorified part fitter/tool fixer) got made redundant made a good effect on the stats. Apologies its not written in perfect English but hey ho.
I'll likely never own one of the motors you repair but the content is good and I watch every video from start to finish you put out. Just my two penneth.

I love all your videos, I think the RUclips algorithm want you to focus a lot more on your video titles as I think you are missing a trick. Using questions in your titles will really help. Rather than the why warranties are USELESS, “are supercar warranties worth it? We don’t think so!” Etc. you’ve got the thumbnails down. Love the content and honesty 👍🏻

Bring some positivity to the channel, you look at Matt Armstrongs channel and he is full of positive energy! I switch off when you are ranting. If you look at some of the podcasts Matt has appeared on, he struggles with it and has to work on it.
Hopefully my comment is not taken as negative towards you, just trying to give some feedback :)

Ricky and Davla, I watch everything you put out. It all fascinates me. The professionalism you and your lads show is phenomenal , yet you still all have a laugh doing it. I completely understand ( AND so should everyone else) that you have to protect and not show your trade secrets. If you didn't then every fucker out there would be trying to undercut you. As a point, you when doing I think an R8 gearbox with Dodson upgrades would not show parts of what you were doing as it was a Dodson proprietary operation and you as their agent had to protect their own processes. It's the same with things that REP do. You can't show other professional 'Rivals' how you go about it. I was one of those who commented last weeks that I wasn't a fan of the car park walk round as from what you have said others did too. I'm glad you are at least giving it a try, you may bring it back you may not, that's your prerogative. Personally I love the technical stuff, which if I may say you are really brilliant at doing. And also the project motors, and yes sourcing parts, especially since Covid can be a pain in the arse even after this time. So for one am cool about how long I takes for you to produce a video on that particular project. Please don't get a cheaper version of Davla lol you and he spark together well and motoring wise he's a knowledgable guy having been on the scene a good while. 20 min vid? Well don't cut stuff short just to shoehorn stuff into the 20 minutes. It's ok if it strays three or four minutes over that's fine with me. Keep them coming, and RUclips bloodywell pay them decent money! You pay others for absolute shite videos, so pay REP for decent ones.

I think keeping the business / workshop short time (20-30min) videos on this, the main channel, is good for the business. Having a seperate channel "Ricky's Reperformance Rants and Rebuilds" channel for the long form / project videos could be an idea. Less editing on the long form videos, maybe even raw (woof) footage.
Not saying you should duplicate, but maybe get inspiration from RetroPerformance. Weekly 30-40minute shop update / walk through, while individual projects get footage collected over time, until enough is achieved for a dedicated project update video. Have a gander, they do some great projects. Granted, it is projects based, not servicing based, so it isn't exactly a snug glove template for all of your work - but for projects - they have it nailed.
Keep up the good work, love the attitude, the banter and intelligent insight.
If only Swindon was 200 miles East, South East of where it is, honestly, I think they put it in the wrong place centurys ago, just so I couldn't come a do the videography.
    🤣

This probably won't be helpful, but I enjoy whatever you put up. I like the variety - a mix of updates on what's in the shop, projects, rants (please don't stop doing those), some specialist stuff like engine building and the odd "now for something completely different" trip out. A very fair point that you don't want to give away too much of your hard-earned knowledge. I'd suggest 30 mins would be a good average length to aim for. 20 feels a bit short. Above all, keep the humour and banter with the team. There are plenty of serious-faced people on RUclips making purely technical videos. The fact that you mix it up and do it in an amusing way sets you apart from most.

Love the channel and random chat! 👍🏻 as a bike guy i found your channel via Guy Martin talking with you about stuff we’d never hear, from both of you in the engine room! I’d love more engine room chats with Sylvain (when he next comes for a service) on “insider” racing stuff, experiences, knowledge etc plus any of his rider friends round for a tea and chat (Hodgy, Redding, Fagan?etc etc). You also seem keen to do more 720 work….could you do an engine build on Mat Armstrongs McLaren as a project /showcase? I’m sure his involvement would increase potential McLaren customers / youtube numbers….what do I know!? 😂 keep doing what you’re doing! 👍🏻

    As said, skip the carpark.
I get having project cars is a common way of monetising mechanic downtime waiting on parts, just takes a while to get them done.
    Dodson unboxing ALL DAY LONG
Prodetail is interesting stuff -I would understand though about telling people how to do stuff rather than bringing to a detailer is counter productive
I went to Brewers down the road at the weekend and drove down and you wouldn't know you were there, is that deliberate? Only if I wanted a PADI diving course :)
If you look at 44Teeth - the bits i salivate over are JHS racing ones. I love that sort of day to day stuff and James.

HI Ricky, never commented before, you've a clear passion for your craft, this is clear, sometimes the videos are a big rough but this shows the authenticity, dont forget that.
The video which bought me here was the V10 R8 & Gallardo gen1 engines.
Bad - The parking lot thing is not a winner for me, Dyno meh... its interesting 1 time but again dont give away how you master your craft and tuning tips.
Good - Techincal information is great. Hearing about differences between differnt models eg R8 & Gallardo.
6:31 - Apparently 15-25 minutes is thought to be the optimal length for most youtube videos, it better gets into RUclips algorithams, people have short attention... spans, it's worth speaking with Matt Armstron & on how he fumbled his way through growing his channel whilst not impacting your passion which is the business.
8:50 - In my opinion don't be showing people how to repair stuff dont give away your secrets, the "what went wrong" videos are good, but how to service a car? Nah!
11:50 - In my opinion, keep doing what you're doing, grow progressively , you shouldnt let RUclips overtake the core purpose of RE performance. Margins are tight and Dav isnt free.
14:57 - Avoid sponsors in my opinion, if and when you can afford to take Dav more, then do that.
21:50 - Please dont take the teenager... i think you will loose more than you gain, they wont have the expirience, you'll have to put a lot of time into directing them & think they think they're right all the time! 😒

I think that chasing view figures just makes all channels the same. If you want big view figures, yeah, do what everyone else is doing.
If you want to make a smaller group of people looking for technical content happy, then do that.
    What do _you_ want?

Get someone to manage the shop & deal with the clients free yourself up to do the things you are good at.
You can’t run a your workshop look after your family do Motorsport and do RUclips & work weekends and be your best at all them commitments. it’s not sustainable and you can’t do it all!
Solid recipe for burnout if you ain’t already there Ricky.
