- Britain's Cheapest Boxster Project Part 2 - Fixing my First Porsche. In this episode Jonny Smith finally collects his bargain 2002 2.7 Boxster that cost £1900, takes it for an MoT and drives it over 200 miles home in biblical wind and rain. After that we document changing the troublesome (water damaged) body control module for a good used item on eBay, followed by a service and inspection. This 986 Boxster hasn't been crashed, stolen and painted, although it was owned by Alex Kerston, previously from @CarThrottle and now @AutoAlex.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
Hopefully this video goes to show that you can buy, diagnose and maintain/repair a real Porsche modern classic on a sensible budget.
Huge thanks to:
Birmingham Car Keys (birminghamcarkeys.co.uk/) for the alarm module fix
LaRose Porsche of Kent (laroseporsche.co.uk/) for servicing and inspection

Great to see you being able to enjoy the car properly without having to stress about all the previous issues. Out of interest for those considering a Boxster project, in part 3 you should give us a grand total spent on the car including the purchase price.
I'd hope that anyone considering such a project is capable of looking at the second hand market and researching component prices, but in this day and age I won't hold my breath 😊
@@samuelgarrod8327 In this day and age, mate, watching videos like this is probably the BEST type of research for second-hand market buyers. Also, super useful for newcomers less familiar with cars. Let’s not be gatekeepers, and aim to provide the best possible combo of information and entertainment (which Jonny is really known for anyway).
Yes but lets be honest, its such a stupid placement of a vital eletric component by Porsche in a place where water can get in and cant get out. Its a soft top convertible, it should be designed with an idea that water could get in. This module should absolutely be somewhere hidden under dash. I feel like if this was italian car and not a Porsche, people would meme the stupid design
Hi Jonny. Really enjoyed this. When will we see Part 3? All the best.
That license plate is going to be worth an absolute mint to the 2nd CEO of a firm called World Distributor of Jelly. Will pay for the car!
I read it as CEO 2WD J :)
As the third CEO of World Distributor of Jelly I’m filthy that my colleague gets this plate
It’s jam, not Jelly. They’re global.
Worldwide DJ aka pitbull needs this plate
*tumbleweed*
As an expert non-Porsche owner I enjoyed this video greatly, even the terrible singing and "leak" becomes "ingress." A couple of other commenters have spoken about vicarious pleasure and I can't explain it any better than that.
Ive had my 987 3.2 S for about 3 years and it is a beautiful car. Ive had to do a couple of the common fixes (luckily no water ingress as the car was garaged most of its life and i regularly check the drain holes).
The amount of 'look mummy a Porsche' comments i get when driving it is quite funny as that child was once me and I've always aspired to own something a bit nice but not bankrupting to buy or own. It fits that brief perfectly.
There are always the naysayers, 'its not a 911', but frankly go and drive one and tell me its the poor relation. They are incredible.
Wow, we thoroughly enjoyed that! Great to go on your journey with you Jonny. And how bloody amazing was Dave's van! Roll on Part 3 🤗🤗🤗
I hope this inspires others to repair, recondition and restore more 986 Boxsters as they are such wonderful cars. Thank you Jonny

@@TheLateBrakeShowHey Jonny, Laptop repair Tech here. A trick I use with phone and laptop motherboards is to give the pcb a really good coat of lacquer. That will help protect the bare metal joints and component legs from corrosion in the future 👍
This trick is really helpful for dashboard parts too to prevent condensation.
Cannot wait for part 3 brilliant content
Hey Johnny, great vid! I ran a 997 for 9 years so I went through a few corroded parts. I'm sure none of this is news now but... Just in case: check your tandem oil pump cover, ignition coil heat shields, front condensers/radiators (shown in the vid), battery tray, bodywork behind front wheel. Also check your engine mounts (don't exactly corrode but go saggy), earth strap/power distribution/starter motor (if your starting is slow/weak when hot). Suspension components were duly eaten away every few years (I did 40k miles...), check your clutch life too. OEM exhaust boxes eventually crack and generally corrode as they are mild steel. It was a 997 and not a boxter but a lot of the drivetrain is built very similarly, most OEM suppliers are the same.
Very, very informative! Many thanks for sharing and introducing the go-to-experts for sorting a car like this👏🙏⭐
Genuine car enthusiast .. great channel keep it going
Jonny, as an ex-Porsche technician, I have some valuable advice… if you have no proof that the IMS has been changed for an updated item, GET IT DONE YESTERDAY.
There is no indication of it failing, it just goes, destroying the engine & therefore scrapping the car. You can do the clutch at the same time and the RMS (crankshaft seal)
With frequent (max 5000 km) oil changes using 5W40 and with the cooling system up to scratch, I’ve seen many engines do more than 300.000km, if the IMS has been changed
The M534 locking module gets soaked if the cowl drains are blocked, remove the covers in front of the windscreen, two minute job, clean out all the crap and unblock the drain holes on either side
If you don’t do this the locking module will get drenched again, at the same time clean out the drains under the convertible flap, one on either side
Not so much on the 2.7 version.
Top advice here.
I hope he reads the comments!
There’s also an argument for not yanking it out though.
Inspect it and if ok, flip the oil seal off to let fresh oil in and it should be good.
That’s the route I’ve gone down before.
Different strokes for different folks but yes, either way, the bearing should be looked at.
@@marky9117 agreed, I’ve removed the oil seal on a couple of cars but as the price of a new ceramic bearing is so affordable, most customers wanted it replaced.
How about a touch of preventative maintenance by drilling a couple of small holes in the passenger side floor?
Porsche Specialist wanted £1900 to replace the bushes all around on 2001 S3.2. Define value.
The saga continues in a realistic tempo!
This may be one of the few Porsches in my "somewhat fiscally responsible" range, and time and again I do think about doing exactly what you're doing.
Get the cheapest one and just enjoy it as a project. Of course, watching you do it is much easier on my finances than getting one myself!
Cheers for letting us live vicariously.
Fascinating and not even a sniff of a mention of an ims bearing, how refreshing! I drove an early silver 2.5 tiptronic in 2005 and was instantly in love.
Saffas doing us proud at LaRose!
Having done an 'I bought the cheapest' myself and sorted it. I always enjoy these series no matter what car. This and TDC's 996 are my current favourites and I don't even care for Porsches that much. Well done.
Upgrade to a bilge pump.
Great video Jonny. Having got a 987 Cayman last year, been waiting for an update. They’re such good cars and super under appreciated.
That produced a worrying amount of smoke when it first started … seemed to settle down quick enough though.
Yes, Johnny it's a proper Porsche. It shares around 80% of its parts with the 911, but puts the engine in a more sensible place to give it better handling. I think your going to be really impressed with the car once the suspension is sorted.
We had a 986 Boxster S, when it was 6 years old. By far the most dissapointing car I have ever had. Not the worst, but the most dissapointing. The two biggest gripes were the build quality, stuff broke that shouldn’t. Like the air con display??? Heat shield repairs having more past invoices than fuel receipts???
But the biggest gripe was the weight. I reckon it was 100-150kgs heavier than it needed to be. Blunted everything.
My only advice for a cheap Boxster to improve it would be to take as much weight out of it as possible, will make it a far nicer car to drive.
Lovely video
When my car window is partway down like that, I solve the problem by grasping the window winder handle and rotating it clockwise. Doesn't take much, and the window goes up!
"Yes, I know it still makes that sneezing noise" 😂 😂
I’m definitely getting one of these, always like them, also I don’t admitting it’s the only way I can afford a Porsche just to tick I off the list
Ian Jemison Engineering near York, UK knows A LOT about these. He rallies a Boxster. Great at putting steel inserts in alloy wheels too.
Great video! You can see how genuinely happy Jonny is when driving the car!
Did it go through Rufford Ford ;)
The "Bridlington Boxster" on a Cardiff plate. Well travelled. Jonny, you are a brave man for showing us what's possible with a cheap Boxster.
Ex Cardiff indeed. I have all the service history.
When is part 3 being streamed?
"Water is coming in". Make you feel at home with the Roadster and Insight. Common theme!!
That road that Ketton cement put in looks soo out of place but it is wicked I think they should do a time trial there
Brilliant insight into buying the current last affordable Porsche. Won't be long before values will be going up. So many cars I have fancied and left too late 924's and XJS as an example. Keep the videos coming Jonny.
When’s the 3rd episode coming I’m gagging for it 😢
so now I need a Barn Find Fleece and a "The Late Brake Show" wall clock. This show is a merch juggernaut!
I want to buy a new toy (car) every time I watch but I need to convince my significant other that it's ok. Jonny, do you draft letters? Just add the official "TLBS" seal. She'd probably accept that, right?
I'm still waiting for the Smith and Sniff pie...
Still don't do ties... Sadly.
@MyLifePixelled I usually do the convincing after, get her a fleece so she can wear it when your driving it to tlbs festival 😉
Another great episode, Jonny.. Looking forward to see how the Boxster Story unfolds, and all thaaat.... Cheers 🏁
Another great video Johnny! really enjoyed this and also just what I needed. Ive been on the fence for a while about buying a Boxter and your journey will certainly help in that department. Looking forward to episode 3…lovin the channel as always… cheers🍺
I used to have one of these there a little pocket rocket great drive …
Auto electricians are on another planet. Love their van set ups.
Has anyone noticed the La Rose hoodie at certain angles. Was it talking to Jonny for buying the cheapest Boxster? 😂
For a moment, I thought this was Grand Tour!
Use the air on while you’re driving as that’s a great dehumidifier.
man with mountain bike and carrier bag of cans spotted at 9:05 , couldnt see if it was a no name full suspension bike. :D
Imagine explaining this British cultural phenomenon to someone international😂
😂👏🏻
@@R03333 Can confirm, am confused
@@R03333 Please attempt. Im from NZ
Those plugs needed to go
Great insight 😊
Need to clean drains to stop water from getting in
Great video Jonny!
My brother and I bought a 2001 986s a few back, we call it our toy. Wonderful machine to drive. Done a fair few things to it now, upgraded the roof to a glass window (plastic had cracked), new back box, refurbished the headlights, AC LCD display has gone so fixed that, and a big service last year which fixed leaky break lines and new O2 sensors etc... But the best thing we did was install (ourselves) exhaust bypass valves. The noise this 3.2L car can make now it's insane.
I am ready for Part 3 !
We do believe that if you turned the seats around and drove it the other way, it will look a better car.
Bought my own Boxsturd towards the end of last year (£2000 so maybe the second cheapest...). Loved chipping away at little jobs with the old man. Had exactly the same water ingress issue and managed to get a new box quite cheap. Passed its MOT 2 weeks ago and ive had a smug smile ever since!
Love the channel, looking forward to part 3👍
Please check your drain holes. In the front truck around the battery. And around the top. Clean them out, and buy the drain filters. It'll help keep debris from going in. You can buy them online and easy to put in
They were completely full! All of them have been cleared and thankfully there were no rips/tears in the lining😬
0:32 I am guessing the intern came up with the logo for the Porsche specialist L ARSE 😂
I'm enjoying this Boxster series. I have a little Honda CR-Z hybrid coupe which runs like a Swiss clock, does 50+ mpg on a long run and is dirt cheap to tax and insure. However, this Boxster has got me thinking that I might fancy one.
Great 1st Rooster Start !! 🐔🐔🐔
Nice old Volvo in the background
I have a mint low miles (sub 70K ) 2000 3.2S Arctic Silver over navy blue hood and interior with the 18" split rim alloys. I have owned it since 2015 and its 100% original. I need to replace the exhaust clamps to the rear boxes as they have disolved but i have a set of OEM clamps. Yet it still passes the MOT and I haven't had time to replace the clamps yet. A job for this summer ! Everything works as it should. It only goes out in dry weather and lives under a Storm force cover over the Winter. It used to live in the garage but now I have too many restored motorcycles taking up that space ! My other fun car is a 2003 Mini Cooper S !
I have a 987.1 here in Aus which has cost me a pretty penny in maintenance but compared to the cost of getting a newer one I’m still significantly ahead. If Larose can send me parts I’m very excited!
I think LaRose ship worldwide actually chap. Try them.
This was an exceptionally detailed and honest overview of a project car progress.
This looks more like a barn find episode!
Great to see one come back to life. Been restoring my 996 which had water ingress in the same place (sunroof drains). Took 2 months to dry that carpet and sound proofing fully! Found the only way to do it fully was to remove it and dry in the house in the end. (First step was placing it on a folded towel and standing repeatedly on the carpet to drain the sound proofing, which holds on to water far too well!)
Never get tired of this show, what a top bloke
Lekker lekker La Rose!
Leak is possibly is water getting though the bottom of the doors
I waited 6 months for this, and it dropped while I was in hospital getting an operation! Well worth the wait though.
Oh sh1t, sorry to hear about the hospital trip. Part 3 coming in a fortnight.
Xr3 is a late f reg as it’s got 90 spec interior .
Don’t know if you’ve noticed Jonny but it’s got upgraded rear lights!! That’s £300 straight away 👍👍
Great video, love to have a boxer
My 993 Targa had the same issue with the alarm module. Blocked roof drains leak water into the car, it collects under the passenger , and gets into the alarm module.
10:42 that is the face of an excited kid in his very own Porsche! It may 'only' be a 2000 pound Boxster but the excitement right there is priceless! It's a nice car Jonny, and not stupidly expensive even if after you throw some money at it. Can't say I don't envy you a little bit.
Did Rose charge for the check over? Looked very comprehensive and wondering if they would do that for anyone?
Those aftermarket lower control arms on 986 / 996 usually suck. Often start causing that awful knocking / clunk over small bumps. One of the parts where OEM is likely best, can also use 997 components.
Excellent subject. Did you have the cylinder compression checked, Jonny?
Being an information hoover, I loved watching this. Fantastic. So satisfying to get a reasonably priced fix (so far) 😊. Looking forward to the next instalment. 👍
One of your best Jonny. Really enjoyable step through the process. For me this is one of your best project cars.
It’s always great when I see Jonnys been uploading again! Can’t wait for part 3 of this one 👍🏻
Oooooh a red 240 estate? Is that part of the fleet? Dad had one for years!
My 996 starter motor sticks like yours, maybe every 1 in 10 starts. I’ve just learned to live with it til it gets worse!
Almost bought a similar age one recently, wish I had now...
Go do it!
Another project 😮 us from the early days are aware j s and projects are like book ends should never of met lol were waiting for a few to be finished but faith we hold 🙏
Note to ones self....Do NOT buy an old Boxter*
Good to see the car running as it should. Please do a detailing video on the car.
We will.
Jonny, really great to see you have the Boxster up and running. We have near twin cars with same spec and colours - mine a year older though. I travelled about 300 miles to pick mine up and had an interesting drive back home with a failing alternator - very exciting as the sun began to set! I'm looking forward to your next video...
@3:51 it made the vw golf starter noise, had a few manual and auto golfs and that unique slow to retract bendix sound is identical to me lol
Great video, great the windows now work :-) are you wearing Ugg boots?
great video, looking forward to the next one - keeping things running with known fixes - how ever much it costs is surely the way we should all be going in order to reduce over production/consumption. Glad you are keeping this one running.
I want to say if you're using the shop vac for wet, you need to remove the filter because now the filter is going to degrade/mold haha.
I was just about to make this comment myself. Only use the filter when dry vaccing with a bag in the cylinder.
@@Scwirral haha I only brought it up since he said he didn’t want to break his brothers vac. I wouldn’t have said anything otherwise.
That finger sloshing noise of water reminds me of my Volvo V60 paddling pool boot. I took the rubber bungs out, let it drain and traded it in after a short spell of ownership. Oh yes, and it liked to have a water feature in the passenger footwell too. Water and electronics mix really well.
I'm pre 6 mins, but the rhs bulb is out on the rear numberplate
That noise was the starter dog staying in mesh remove starter and give the dog and where it slides a good vlean with brake cleaner to prevent damage to the ring gear should be an easy fix 😊
Love the Ghetto Boxster. Thank you for the update! I shall keep an eye out for any 02 plate blue Boxsters in case it might be you, in which case expect a wave! Have a great time off with the kids. That chap from Birmingham Car Keys... what an excellent electronics engineer! Brilliant stuff.
Thank you!
I honestly think that we petrol heads get more enjoyment out of cars this Porsche that don’t cost you a fortune.
Part 3 now please. I’m in need of the next instalment of General Zod Buys A Boxster.
Pulled in at the shell garage in Howden….if I’d have known, I would have brought you a cuppa!
Im a new 986 boxster owner too.😊 Already fixing my own problems, brakes, clutch etc.. 😅 but its such a great car! And im excited to get it back to working like it should. Share your enthusiasm for this fab porache.
More boxster videos in the future please ❤
Great vid Jonny. As the owner of one of the 'half decent' 6-7k cars you mentioned, these are one of the most underrated cars around, great value now. Straightforward to work on, galvanised body, and engine noise over 4k has to be experienced. Party trick luggage space means road trips for two are a breeze (Black Forest next month). Only downside is its too lowbrow for Porsche owners club , too new for the older classics community, so sits in no-mans land somewhere in the middle....
It totally sits in the middle of classic and modern Porsche territory, which is why they are cruelly overlooked by so many.
really useful watch. just recently found my passenger side carpet wet and now fully understand the problem thanks to this video. just booked in to a porsche specialist to get it sorted.
I love this series. Looks a great car and all the faults are the usual things that affect them. Looking forward to part 3. 😎
The rattle at start up was just the camchains flapping about until the tensioners pressurised. Sounds worse than it is and probably won’t do it when used regularly.
If using it irregularly and bothered by it at cold starts, simply pull fuse C4 (fuel pump), crank engine until you see oil pressure on the gauge, reinsert fuse and start it.
That’s what I do in my GT3, but only when it has stood for months over winter. 👍🏻
Interesting and his excitement on Windows going up is absolutely fantastic, looking forward to the journey ❤
When are we going to see part 3?
Loving this!!
