Then in the early 80s a Band called "Men At Work", the movies "Gallipoli", "The Road Warrior", "The Man From Snowy River", "The Year of Living Dangerously" blew-up in North America!! Mel Gibson became an International Movies Star! By the time "Mad Max Thunder Dome" and "Crocodile Dundee" came out Australia was now an International Star and everyone wanted to go there. "I'm scared, Fif. You know why? It's that rat circus out there. I'm beginning to enjoy it."
    "What is this, funny week?"
"Look. Any longer out on that road and I'm one of them, you know? A terminal crazy... only I got a bronze badge to say I'm one of the good guys."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Joanne Samuel.
The Doctor Is In Fact: George Miller raised the money for Mad Max (1979) by working as an emergency room doctor.
Shakespearean Villains Fact: Hugh Keays-Byrne and Tim Burns were both classically-trained Shakespearean stage actors. Hugh Keays-Byrne modeled his performance of Toecutter after historical records written about Mongolian warlord Temujin, also known as Genghis Khan. Tim Burns was so into Johnny The Boy character that he annoyed everyone on-set and was abandoned one day during lunch while handcuffed to the wreck.
Vigilantes Gang Fact: The "get-out-of-jail-free card" that Goose (Steve Bisley) gives the triker was an on-set joke. Because of the limited budget, the biker gang was an actual biker gang (The Vigilantes), and they had to ride to the set each day in costume; often with their prop weapons displayed. Since the production company expected them to be pulled over by the local police, each was given a letter explaining the film's peculiar requirements, and asking for law-enforcement's understanding and cooperation. Most of the extras used in the film were paid in beer.

After seeing that one at an underground movie house on my college campus, I went back and found a VHS copy of Mad Max at a video rental store. The first movie is an origen story for the character and the world, but by the second movie the world-building progresses along with Max's madness. The third movie is my least favorite, but probably the biggest budget and biggest commercial success until the Tom Hardy reboot movie came out and really brought the franchise back to life with style.

Mad MAX is a legendary film--an obscure film from Australia by a former medical doctor. Made for around $350,000 and grossed worldwide $100,000,000! It was a legend in the US in 1979 and 1980. It had 3 sequels: The Road Warrior(Mad Max 2), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and the most recent with Tom Hardy as Max is Mad max Fury Road.
The Road Warrior and Fury Road are legit masterpieces and are iconic films in the action genre. The Road warrior spawned a lot of look a like post apocalyptic movies in the 80s. Fury road even won some Academy awards and it is mind blowing. Fury road is a must watch!
Just so you know, Mad Max is set in a future Australia in which the world is starting to shut down. The next ones in the franchise are set after a worldwide disaster and society has broken down completely and people live in survival communities and gangs. Max is a policeman in the first movie and then becomes a survivor who helps the underdog.
BTW, if you like Mel Gibson, please check out Braveheart if you have not already done so. Braveheart is absolutely his best movie!!

So very very happy tosee you react to this timeless classic. It put Australia on the map, and I don't recall straight away if it was this one, or maybe "Gallipoli" that made Mel Gibson a star in the film industry. The two sequels are great, and this one, is a very amazing way to do character introduction and set-up.
What I also totally LOVE about this movie, yes it essentially is a shoestring budget, but everything IS Practical! You can NEVER really beat practical effects on the screen, no matter how "good " CGI gets. The human eye will still detect it, but practical, it shows, in lighting in the details etc.
May JL and Crew have amazing time with this trilogy and the rest!
It did put Aussie cinema on the map, pretty much like "Black Sheep" did for New Zealand, til of course Peter Jackson's "Lord Of the Rings"-films

The background on this is that two of the major superpowers have gone to war, and although it may not have gone Nuclear yet, it's coming. Society has started breaking down and because the price of consumer goods and gasoline have started rising, gangs have started ambushing supply trucks and tankers. The Main Force Patrol (MFP) was founded as a dedicated highway patrol group to keep the roads free of gangs and protect supply convoys. They are woefully underfunded, under-equipped and outnumbered, a lot of their officers are easily as mentally unbalanced as the gangs they are fighting, and they will be long gone by the time Mad Max 2 starts (it's set approximately three years after this one).
This one was written purely from an angle of a societal breakdown; the idea that there'd been a nuclear war wasn't thought up until Mad Max 2, although writer Terry Hayes stated in an interview around the time of Beyond Thunderdome's release that there was nothing in the first movie that specifically rules out the nuclear war having already happened (and indeed the intro of Mad Max 2 heavily implies it). At the latest, the Nuclear war has to have happened between the first two films, and not after Mad Max 2 as some people try to claim.
    PS
God bless you for not watching the American dubbed version ❤

0:43 - This is the first movie. Mad Max: The Road Warrior is the second. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome is the third and commonly considered best of the original trilogy. Whether Mad Max: Fury Road is a sequel or an alternate timeline is up for debate. Furiosa (the upcoming movie) is a prequel to Fury Road.
9:09 - In his other movies, he has an accent. He grew up in Australia (this is an Australian movie, BTW).
10:55 - I don't remember where they talk about this, but the backstory of the movie is this: the gas crisis of the late 70s ends with a thermonuclear war. Most of the world's superpowers and their satellite nations are devastated. Australia escapes relatively unharmed, but with global trade nonexistent, the oil supplies in Australia are critically limited. As a result, severe gas rationing is in effect and wasting gas is elevated to a capital crime, making street gangs some of the worst criminals in the nation. In the coming years, the gas WILL run out and the government will collapse, at which point Australia devolves into a lawless wasteland.

    “Payback”
One of Gibson’s best antihero romps.
And if you enjoy Ron Perlman’s work.
    “Mutant Chronicles” is a MUST.
Ignore the ratings, it’s a WILD ride.
Get the directors cut/edition long version whatever, it gives a bit more background.
    Don’t miss it
And Hardy is crazier than that guy with the scarf in
    “Bronson”
Based on an actual UK prison inmate.
    It’s unreal acting.

Haven't seen "Payback" but "Mutant Chronicles" is one that not seen many at all IF ANY react to! Almost forgotten the movie except some scenes. That IS certainly a MUST.

Mad Max: Fury Road is part 4 and is a direct sequel to the previous 3. It only had Tom Hardy in it because it took way too long to finally get made. While you can enjoy it as a separate movie, it is indeed Mad Max 4 and it is a little nicer to have viewed 1-3 first. Mel Gibson was too old to play Max’s age for that movie, and Tom Hardy was too young. Hehe. If it had been made around the time it was first supposed to be made then it would still have made sense for Mel Gibson to return. But after so many delays it made more sense to get someone else, and Mel had gone crazy anyway. You’ll get a little more enjoyment out of part 4 if you’ve seen 1-3, so it is nice to see you’ve started with part 1.

Good to see the original movie get some attention!
If you ever have a large amount of spare cash, there's a company in Australia called Aussie Coupes. They'll find you any vehicle in the original trilogy, modify it to look as much like it does in the film as you want and ship it to you anywhere in the world. It's super expensive though.
Don't worry about tying the story of the original series to the Fury Road era of Max, it cant really be done. Its probably best to think of the films as folklore tales, some of the details change, but the essence of what Max represents remains.

Welcome to post apocalyptic Australia! In this first movie, there are still shreds of government authority, such as the police.
In each subsequent movie, society has deteriorated more toward medieval/barbarism, depending on if they control a valuable resource. Expect crazy plots, crazy costuming, & outrageous over-the-top action. A very fun time!
My personal favorite is Mad Max 3: Beyond Thunderdome. I 😍 Tina Turner's role in it!

You must see Mel Gibson as _Hamlet_ because he played it different.
Most actors start out with Shakespeare and study Laurence Olivier and try to imitate him.
Mel Gibson was not a theater actor and just kind of worked his way into the industry.
The subtitle of _Hamlet_ is _The Melancholy Prince._
Gibson looked up _Melancholy_ in the dictionary and it means "inconsolably sad and depressed" BUT historically it had a different meaning.
In 1603, when _Hamlet_ was first performed it meant: "Totally insane" and so Gibson played Hamlet as an absolute maniac.
    It is a must-see.
