OMG seriously - thought there would never be the 'next' generation beyond Stitt, Rollins, and the others. I love these guys. They carry on the true virtuoso legacy of melodic jazz saxophone and jazz melody beyond the saxophone instrument.
I just love it on how they put pictures of legendary sax players in the middle of the video, making it look like a tribute to the founding generations of sax players !
One of the most amazing performances by the latest generation of jazz tenor saxophonists. For me, there is a certain kind of genius or virtuosic ability on both players although they play this old jazz standard by the great "MONK of JAZZ." I heard Joshua and James quoting a lot of other old time great jazz saxophonists, Charlie Parker, Sunny Rollins, Don Bias, Coleman Hawkins etc. in their solos. But, as for me, these two tenor saxophonists are unique in their own right, they have the jazz language thorough understanding and command and that facilitates their ability to be free and creative in their improvisations. I recently listened to James Carter, I did not know him before, but I always knew about Joshua and his jazz innovations, but for me James is the latest subject of my research in jazz and I find him amazing as a jazz saxophonist. James plays all the saxophones, alto, soprano, tenor, baritone, bass, and flute. He all these instruments fluently. Thanks for this video, I never expected to see James and Joshua playing together, that's amazingly brilliant staff!!!
People don't know...they listen to pop with the nice 4 chords, 1, V, 6m, IV, 1 - over and over and over and over. With autotune. I want to stick my temple with an ice pick sometimes.
Oh man! Joshua and James start out here doing a bit of an updated/supercharged Prez v Hawk thing, which works very nicely for the occasion, but, by the end, and especially by the time we get to cadenza duo, it's so clear that they've made a rip roaring rendez-vous in the land of Rollins, to which all roads, after all, lead the exceptional tenors that they both are. What a hugely fun performance! Greatly helped, or course, helped by a killing band.
Quite possibly the two top tenor men in the world. I wouldn't DARE to say one is better than the other. Listen to the music from Altman's "Jazz 34 - Kansas City", especially Tickle Toe. Wow, are they great!!
Both players' dexterous exuberance are magnanimously superb. Joshua progresses structurally; James swings as he memorializes individual tenor saxophonist during each of his improvisational affirmation.
James is sooooooo talented with so many skills, he literally I think at times, doesn't know what to do. He has to just let loose with virtuoso technique that sounds like Whales exploding out of a volcano or something. Redman has so much musical class, he leaves me speechless.
I listen to this several times over a long period of time. Both artists were phenomenal. the background big man was just too loud to really really really appreciate everything
Niehaus' arrangement on this is killin'. Also, I think the "duel" is great- two of my favorite of the 'younger' jazz cats around at the moment and they both impress greatly for very different reasons...
Joshua Redman is such a creative improviser, a fantastic player, both him and James have totally different approaches to they're playing and I love how that comes together in this performance!!
Two tough tenors on top form - thank you for sharing. Terrific! Couldn't help but think of that Mingus concert in the 70s with Rahsaan Roland Kirk and George Adams, not so much cutting, but bouncing ideas off each other and chasing through with great humour. That was also Carnegie Hall. Must be something about that place.
I like that, a world class band, and world class soloist and the directors all like "ok guys three bars, two bars....one and a two and a three and a four"
IKR?! I acually think the whole arrangement blows for featuring soloists. What's the point of having soloists if you're going to play over the top of them!
I strongly dislike Jon Faddis. He's always squeezing high notes into any music he's playing to just show off, hardly ever to serve an actual purpose. We get it, you're a fucking amazing player.
I disagree. If its a big band gig I want to hear the harmonies of the band. So the solos should be relatively short. Much of jazz improvisation is "call and response" where the artists react to each other. So the highlights of this piece are the parts where Joshua, James, and the band are alternating around and over each other. Look at their faces, they were having a blast. They also worked well together on the sound track for "Kansas City."
no mames al final ya me iba a parar a aplaudir !!!!! ajjaja me encantó como el director de la orquesta muestra en su sonrisa que está realmente disfrutando las impro de los saxofonistas!!!
i like James Carter more because he keeps it real, like i could just listen to him for hours and his ability to change the tone of his sax whenever he wants really makes his playing fun to listen to. Redman is good also i just couldn't see myself listen to him for hours
At the level of mastery both players have, there is no need to talk about who is better. It's like choosing between two types of fine wines of equal quality. They taste different and one is perhaps more appropriate for a given occasion. I really enjoy both. Both have developed their own unique personality. I agree with others that James has a fair amount of Sonny in him. Who does Joshua sound like?
Love their playing, but I think Redman knew just the right balance of effect versus melodic content. Haven't listened to enough of Carter to know and appreciate his style. He seems to throw in a bit too much effect for my taste. He's worlds beyond my ability though, so hard to criticize.
I have to agree with many on several points: First, that this isn't really a competition or a battle in anyway, just a really well prepared jam session. There isn't a "better" player, it is all subject to personal preference. That being said, MY personal preference was in Redman's solos. I say this simply because Carter has raw power, he's bluesy, and has a great command of his sound, but Redman has an incredibly lyrical take of this song and he seems to be dancing circles around the changes.
Comparing Redman to Carter is like comparing Coleman Hawkins to Lester Young, or saying that Dexter Gordon was better than John Coltrane. Josh is a great sax player. Everyone has a different style and it doesn't get any better than these two.Branford is incredible, and all of these guys are some of the best jazz musicians in history.
when you only know joshua but not yet james and you here him the first time, you think its everything to wild and with too much effect. you have to get used to it... then you start liking the style too :-)
OMG seriously - thought there would never be the 'next' generation beyond Stitt, Rollins, and the others. I love these guys. They carry on the true virtuoso legacy of melodic jazz saxophone and jazz melody beyond the saxophone instrument.
Standing on the shoulders of giants.
I just love it on how they put pictures of legendary sax players in the middle of the video, making it look like a tribute to the founding generations of sax players !
Minute 2:10 Joshua is playing and suddenly James Carter is playing! lol
HAHAHAH HAHAHA OMG
Wtf lol
Cut is bad xD
Joshua Redman may be one of the few guys out there that could have fun with and "compete" with James Carter and all of his techniques.
Best part of this video is that smile Redman flashes at 5:18
I couldn't agree more!!

This video premiered in 2009 and it as a measly 2200 views? There's no justice in this world!
2.2k is the Like amount. It has 340k views, though i agree with you it is a bit low for a piece of music as good as this.
People don't know...they listen to pop with the nice 4 chords, 1, V, 6m, IV, 1 - over and over and over and over. With autotune. I want to stick my temple with an ice pick sometimes.
They both were awesome. Nobody won. The big band was full of virtuosi too. Energy beyond belief and they both look so calm and confident.
Let's hear it for the band. Great horns, really tight, and what a rhythm section!
I love how in the trading Carter's like "Try this" and Redman's like "Yup, can do" haha
Oh man! This arrangement...
2:47 "I Mean You" in a blues context...
And "Billie's Bounce" at 2:20
that last note James Carter hits way over the top!!!
:O
Saw James Carter up close & personal @ Bert's Jazz Club in Detroit's Eastern Market a couple of years ago @ a jam session. INCREDIBLE!
Both players' dexterous exuberance are magnanimously superb. Joshua progresses structurally; James swings as he memorializes individual tenor saxophonist during each of his improvisational affirmation.
James has a saxophone tone that I prefer over Joshua, both are great
James is sooooooo talented with so many skills, he literally I think at times, doesn't know what to do. He has to just let loose with virtuoso technique that sounds like Whales exploding out of a volcano or something. Redman has so much musical class, he leaves me speechless.
Nothing but amazing . Absolutely incredible
both players are great! probably the two best sax players in the world
Redman has amazing lyrical sense and Carter has insane chops, fuck hating one or the other they were both awesome in their own individual way.
I listen to this several times over a long period of time. Both artists were phenomenal. the background big man was just too loud to really really really appreciate everything
Killer Big Band and Redman and Carter were amazing!
the backgrounds throughout the solo breaks are amazing.
Niehaus' arrangement on this is killin'. Also, I think the "duel" is great- two of my favorite of the 'younger' jazz cats around at the moment and they both impress greatly for very different reasons...

both did an amazing job. I couldn't pick who did better. Thanks for the upload
James Carter is high on jazz as usual...
Hell yeah
the big band is killin!
awesome, just awesome...
Es que los veo y o me canso, monstruos maestros, lo maximo, que genial, que maravilla,,,, me hace ser un punto en el universo... que bello...
Quelle merveille !!! j'ai encore du travail au ténor ................
I like that, a world class band, and world class soloist and the directors all like "ok guys three bars, two bars....one and a two and a three and a four"
5:22 and very much on. Excuse me Mr. Lead Trumpet.

I never thought of this as some competition. They look like they are having the time of their lives. Thats all I see. Makes this all enjoyable :)
Amazing musicality from Redman!
Brillante big band!!

Magic there aint nothing better than a superd BIG BAND swinging and two briiiant sax solos
The end was superb.
Style what two guys just playing can do to change the world of music as we know it :)
Wow! Hell of a performance! Thanks for sharing this - way over the top!
MIND BLOWN!!!
Muito agradável executado por um duo muito bom.Muitos aplausos do público.
Wess sitting up in the front. No wonder the band swings so powerfully!
I like the Saxophon, thanks
I like the saxophon too
Awesome beyond Awesome!!!!
LOL I love the camera work at 2:13. Redman turns into Carter.
James Carter is my favorite saxophonist ever, but it’s funny how any time there’s a solo for him he just fuckin SHREDS it no matter the vibe lol
I love how Josh start laughing in the middle of Carters Solo,
this is one of my absolutely favorite videos.
i like James Carter more because he keeps it real, like i could just listen to him for hours and his ability to change the tone of his sax whenever he wants really makes his playing fun to listen to. Redman is good also i just couldn't see myself listen to him for hours
6:42 is the first time that man ever smiled since his childhood.
So expressive and creative, from the pair of them. So nice to see rather than generic solos playing bland notes on bland beats of the bar.
yeaaaaaaaa mannnnnnnn realy cool!!!
The last time i ever heard of such zeal on the tenors was with that lot that plays for Sun-Ra
何回観てもすごい!!
2:12 joshua plays solo then they cut to another angle and it's carter soloing over Joshuas lines :D bad editing
never even noticed that... was so fixated on the conductor
@ 5:17 Redmans reaction to James is awesome. I can't get enough of these two.

Dexter Gordon if he played with the technicality of Eddie "Lockjaw" David without the "Texas Tenor" growl.
Muito bom,espetacular.sem comentários. D+.
immense talent....Lions
Like this. Come back to it from time to time. The band could have pulled back a little - they shout over soloists quite a bit. Still, very good.
That note carter hits at the very end!!!!
:O
Love their playing, but I think Redman knew just the right balance of effect versus melodic content. Haven't listened to enough of Carter to know and appreciate his style. He seems to throw in a bit too much effect for my taste. He's worlds beyond my ability though, so hard to criticize.
1:53 "here, my good sirs, is the top of the form".
very admirable
yeah, they are both great1
love this video :D
love carters slap tonguing beat at the end :3
some people dont understand jazz is not a competition.
Not really sure why the picture of Paul Gonsalves appears as 2:54, but it fits
SHOW.......! Yes!SHOW........!
They were like "oh shit lets get out there they started the tune without us!"

i love joshua redman XD
k wash and p wash are the redeeming qualities of this video, to put it lightly
I love how James Carter magically appears to be playing at 2:12 :o
i think they are both good!
Rico y divertido...¿no debiera ser la vida así?...
Comparing Redman to Carter is like comparing Coleman Hawkins to Lester Young, or saying that Dexter Gordon was better than John Coltrane. Josh is a great sax player. Yes, spot on!!
when you only know joshua but not yet james and you here him the first time, you think its everything to wild and with too much effect. you have to get used to it... then you start liking the style too :-)
tradition jazz vs modern jazz I love it
joshua redman se rie....por que de verdad sorprende james carter.igual ambos son unos genios
great concert,,,,I always wondered if rappers sit around jamming at home 24/7 driving their spouses crazy like instrumentalists do?
this song is perfect too with Buddy Rich...!!!
MY GOD ITS FRANK WESS ON TENOR!!!! R.I.P. Frank Wess
james carter solo reminds me of sonny rollins
what kind of song does remind you of her, the one and only?
Who is this arranged by? I’ve been trying to find a chart for months!
Enorme!
Understandable, just a different preference in styles
Man it was amazing how they would play off each other when they were trading 4s
Is James trying to do subharmonic Bb at 4:43? He's singing low F whilst playing low Bb I reckon
3:34 articulation !!!! ie nuts
muy bueno!!!!
