Hey Raymond! I'm surprised that GoPro still doesn't have an underwater white balance mode that cranks up the red channel. Seems like an obvious feature.
Hey Jonathan! GoPro's don't really have much to offer when it comes to white balance and the color of your video. There is a minor setting in the hero 9 that tries to crank up the red channel a bit, but it makes your video look really unnatural and not as good in my opinion. Thanks for checking out my channel!!!
I’m going on a catamaran excursion in Puerto Rico in a couple days. I just bought my GoPro nine and I need all the tips I can get. Thank you for the video.
I just ordered my GoPro hero nine yesterday and it was hoping to use it at a waterpark. If there’s any tips on that and different settings, please make a video.
Im using this for scuba all the way down 80-100'. avg about 70'. What min ISO setting would U use? 100?? I think U said to turn up max to 3200?? Thks, Gunner
3:33 Can't you access the front screen menu on gopro 9 to adjust your settings by pushing both buttons together? I always do it with my 7 if I need to adjust to certain conditions or I just forgot to set them. Great video anyway
5k for a night scuba dive? What would you use for a day scuba dive using a DIVER PROPULSION? Probably be moving fairly quick. Always wide view with scuba? Thanks
I have a Hero 3+ which I’ve used for several years. I am considering a Hero 9. With the 3+ I use filters for different depths. None of the Hero 9 RUclips videos which I have seen, including yours, mentioned filters are they not necessary with Hero 9?
The newer GoPro cameras have better white balance options, so you can now add more red or blue into your video just by adjusting your settings. It's also way easier to get good looking color in your video by editing rather than with dive filters. However if you don't want to have to do any editing at all, filters are still a viable option
Hey Raymond! Im diving in Key Largo a couple of shipwrecks(Spiegel and Benwood) appx 120-140ft..i have a red filter from my old gopro and just got my gopro9 and hooking it up to underwater stick, any specific settings? How long will each video battery life last( i have 2 batteries and can switch them on the boat between dives), and memory chip size? Look foward to your response/tips
I'd defiantly have your ISO max turned up, so the video never gets too dark. When it comes to battery life, it all depends on what settings you're filming in, but the Hero 9 battery should last the entire dive with no issues. I would charge up both batteries just in case you need to change them between dives. The memory chip size doesn't matter all that much, but I always use a 64gb card. I was just diving on the Benwood wreck a little over a month ago and it was fantastic. Have fun!
Thank you, what about the stabilization option and other settings please? When I get it my 9 I’m gonna practice in my pool first but appreciate any advice in that area, it’s a problem I had with other dives in the original GoPro(wobbly)
You should definitely have hyper smooth stabilization turned on. When it comes to fps, that depends on how you want your video to look. Typically, lower fps is better for low light conditions, but it's not good for filming fish or other moving objects. I'd probably stick to 60 fps while diving those wrecks.
Hey Raymond! Taking the Hero9 on its maiden voyage diving tomorrow. What are your thoughts on if I should use the housing at a depth of 30 feet? Or should I leave it off since I’m not going below the maximum rated depth? Thank you and great videos!
At 30 feet it's really all up to you. Personally, I usually always use a dive housing every time I take my GoPro underwater because I like to be as safe as possible.
Thanks for this. Very useful. I'm curious why you don't recommend shooting in the flat color setting and then adjusting colors in post. I'm planning to use a Hero 9 Black in the Galapagos in two weeks and want to nail my settings. Can you recommend a good (less than $300) underwater light to use with the GoPro underwater?
I always film in the GoPro color setting, and that's because it's able to take some of the blue away in the video, and expose more of the reds and yellows. As for an underwater light, the company "suptig" or "shoot" make some great underwater lights at a very cheap price.
Really useful. Any further tips for murky water cage shark diving with the hero 9. Tried before but not with a go pro but it came out quite blurry and unclear. Thanks!
When the water is really murky there's not a whole lot you can do to make it look better. I would suggest filming in the highest resolution possible, and having it set on wide field of view. If you have it set on linear it won't look quite as good.
Hi from Australia!!! Cheers for this video!!! I just got a Hero9 for Christmas (upgrade from Hero3) and my main use is scuba diving footage. This has been really helpful for me as I wasn’t able to change any settings on the Hero3.... so excited to go diving now and test it out! Next trip, Heron Island in 2 weeks time.
Hope you can get awsome videos, I wonder how wide could videos be while diving to record yourself and the most possible area around. If you could share content of the results It would be amazing!!
I used your advice and filmed with the gopro 9 a snorkel div in south africa of the sardine run in 6500K. the video came out very green. The prior day had a greenish tint and my friend who had a 7 was shooting with same settings had a more natural tint so i was trying to get a more natural light but it was even greener. any thoughts?
Superview mode can look really good with underwater video, as it gives you kind of a fish-eye look. As for narrow, it all depends on how you want your video to look, but I personally wouldn't use it underwater.
I am setting up my motovlog rig in my helmet for my motorcycle. I want to record my voice by plugging in a lavalier microphone in the media mod. But since there is not much space in my helmet, the microphone will be super near my mouth. Due to this the microphone can’t handle the volume of my voice. To adjust this the Gain needs to be adjusted. I am wondering if the GoPro Hero 9 has a build-in auto gain control, That adjusts the gain according to the situation or something? If not, do you have advise on how to solve this issue?
Hi Raymond, thanks for your content, it's been useful. Do you recomend GoPro H 9 Wide view over GoPro H 8 for diving videos? Also, Do you know if the Max Lens Mod of GP H 9 is suitable for diving?
This is my first video to your channel and it's looks good! Have you tested in Antarctica or the Arctic? I have a couple of trips planned in August 2021 and February 2022. I wont be snorkeling or diving but will use an extension pole to trail the camera underwater from a Zodiac or kayak. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Greetings from Stuart Coves! Hope you enjoyed your dive. We're using the Hero 9 for Shark Dives so we dont have to worry about ruining a DSLR lol hope your video will help me
in my opinion its the hardest not due to settings but due to light. Hard to get good light under water and you get lots of noise when you go under shadows etc and keeping the camera stabe while diving
Great video!! ^^ I'm curious as to how useful horizon leveling is while diving. Swimming is seldom completely stable (even with hypersmooth 3.0). I wonder if horizon leveling with the ground while diving would give you those gimbal-like shots underwater. :D
I actually have. I tried out the horizon leveling underwater and the resulting video didn’t look the greatest, so I decided not to recommend it in this video.
You are assuming that a person filing with the go Pro, is using no lights. You should do a video on the go pro 9, with filters and lights, and be able to offer a more informative video.
I just got a GoPro Hero 9 and I find its quality underwhelming, in particular the noise reduction is awfully strong, making everything blurry. Very disappointed, especially at this very high price point.
Do you have a GoPro Hero 9? I hope you all enjoy!

Thank you Raymond for your tips and explanation. Bought the hero 9 for our trip next week; we're going snorkelling between orca' in Norway!
great video thanks.... Do you recommend using /buying a dome for scuba diving?
hello. my gopro hero 9 black drains the battery even if it is turned off. Do I have to change some setting?
Hi Raymond, thnx for the info. Just bought a GoPro 9. You don't talk about filters. Do you use a red filter for snorkeling?
I do not use any dive filters with my GoPro. I wait until I'm editing to fix up the color

I just got my gopro 9 today. I've been hanging on to my Hero 5 and will now use both. Great channel!
Going to try my new Hero 9 snorkeling in Oahau in May.
Nice!
are these videos color graded?
Do you use filters on GoPro? I dive in Caribbean at about 40-50 ft and us a red filter. Does that change the settings that you suggested?
3:33 Can't you access the front screen menu on gopro 9 to adjust your settings by pushing both buttons together? I always do it with my 7 if I need to adjust to certain conditions or I just forgot to set them. Great video anyway
You can use that menu, but because hero 9 has presets, you are only able to choose the preset, but not to change iso, FOV or so on
@@TheBallonielia they changed it? Didn't know. That's crap

Hi! Would you recommend a go pro 9 or a 10... I can't decide and I don't know if that 100 bucks extra for the 10 is worth it.
Thanks great advice- still seems a little daunting!

The Hero 9 is waterproof down to 33 feet by itself, so unless you're going any deeper than that, you won't need an underwater case.
