Freelancer is one of my favorite games of all time. It was the first time I felt like a pc gamer. You had to be extremely dexterous, using like twelve buttons with your left have and all the mouse buttons at once with your right. That was mind blowing for me at the time.

  • @FeebleAntelope
    @FeebleAntelope 6 месяцев назад +4

I've missed Freelancer for a long time.
Tried playing the Discovery mod, but it was disappointing how it was managed:
1.) They added a bunch of new solar systems and ships to the base game, which made things really interesting! But...
2.) The server moderators made rules requiring roleplay, which was fun until moderators kept adding more and more restrictions on what ships you could fly or where you could trade, based on what IDs you had.
The new ships were mad expensive, requiring a lot of grind. But then moderators came up with contrived fan fiction that rationalized restricting neutral factions from flying freighters with the best cargo space; suddenly the only way to fly the best freighters was to be in a faction that couldn't go on any of the decent trade runs because RP rules forbade them going to the inner systems.
3.) You could join whatever faction you wanted, but at first it required hours long grinding to kill the right ships to get the reputation you needed.
The server implemented really cool features so that you could bypass that grind and get straight to the roleplaying that was mandated by the server rules. But it was awkwardly implemented because a number of moderators were upset that new players wouldn't have to suffer hours of grind. It wiped out all your money and reset your ship to the first basic ship.
4.) I remember bringing some of these issues up with the moderators in charge and I was told flat out that they did not want new people there; they had enough people at the server.
Well, they got what they wanted: now no one's on that server. I've looked in on that server a few times over the years and they dwindled down to basically nothing.
UPDATE: I checked last night and today. Server had 29 people (with a low of 12) spread across over 80 systems, on a server that used to host 50 to 100 people at all times. Mostly a few sad little dictators left, ruling over a server that's a shell of its former self.
UPDATE 2: A quick look at the Discovery forums.... One guy who had ships (characters) in different systems acting as police or pirates, had all those ships deleted permanently. Why? Because he was chasing someone who got away in one system, so he changed ships to try to catch them in another system. It was ruled, "metagaming" because his affiliated ships shouldn't be able to coordinate according to their strict RP rules.

While I love Freelancer, you overstate its role in the evolution of space sims. The only thing novel Freelancer did was introduce the 3rdP view and mouse point and click system. Most of the core gameplay was meant to deliver a "next-gen" Privateer and it only partially hit the mark.
Starlancer actually was done by Roberts before Freelancer, and Freelancer did get flack for when it was originally released for feeling "dead" and having many of the promised features scaled back or outright removed, it was also very buggy due the the tumultuous dev process which included Chris Robert's exit.
Now Descent: Freespace and Freespace 2 I'd argue had a larger impact on the space sim genre we still see today.
Space sims was my genre when I was reviewing games in undergrad in the days of print (end of 90s), with some of my space sim reviews showing up in Computer Games Magazine, MSN Games, and Adrenaline Vault. Was how I got my career start, so awfully particular about the genre's history gets told.

To this day I wonder why in the almost 40 bloody years since the days of Gradius, there have been rarely if ever any notable space flight games with the same gloriously cheesy cosmic fantasy/horror elements we had in those classic arcade shmups. Like, you fly past a nearby sun, and suddenly it opens a massive eye fixing you down, just before the protuberances on its surface comes to life and attack you in the shape of fiery serpents, that kind of stuff. So the potential of this here - even more so as a Freelancer style game - has me unreasonably excited.

This is Navy seven to Freelancer alpha one dash one, mind if I take a peek in your hold? Didn't think so!
Keep it icy men. I don't want to wind up a corpse before my time because YOU were daydreaming.
Stay alert. If you let your guard down out here, even for a second, that's all it takes.

What I want from a Freelancer game is GOOD STORY and STRONG CUSTOMIZATION. I will happily take middling graphics if that's the trade-off.

Hi Splat, love your channel, good work as always BUT..I have to say that while Freelancer, a genre defining game and superb in its own right, was vastly inspired by Privateer 2: The Darkening released in 1996.

The director of privateer 2 was Erin Roberts, Chris Roberts' brother. Making space games is basically the family trade. Hope they succeed with Star Citizen. But I guess Underspace will be finished and released before we get even the single player game Squadron 42 both brothers are making.

While Privateer 2 had a LOT of problems with its combat I’d still say that the design for everything in the game, from ships to the UI, is to this day unchallenged

Freelancer was really just a modernized, fully 3D version of Privateer (an earlier Chris Roberts game with the Wing Commander branding), so it makes me kinda sad that Freelancer gets all the influence mentions these days. I think Privateer deserves to be mentioned alongside it, at the very least. They were both great games, but Privateer was the one that established the formula.
