Here is what I think the petrol warning is for. If you leave it open for more than 30 minutes, it would assume you have forgotten to close it. As a result, it will probably block the petrol tank, which would prevent people from people able to steal your petrol. Because of this, the petrol isn't entering the tank and then begins to overflow. Closing and opening the petrol cap will reset the 30 minute timer, and allow you to begin filling it up.
CommAndroid it most likely requires a good amount of force to close considering it's a seal. It wouldn't be worth it to add such a complicated and strong mechanism when you could just close it from the inside.
I doubt it’s about stealing petrol, it will be for stopping evaporation, air entering the tank, and less fuel splashing around back up the pipe while driving.
Christopher O'Grady I think your right, my first thought was air entering the tank preventing the pump from being able to read the level of gas in the tank. Idk how it really works though.
@@XxNewmilleniumxX The camry is just an overall simpler car with simpler parts. Luxury vehicles are more often than not less reliable just because they're more complex and have more features that can potentially break.
Toyota / Lexus in 1992: We are not going to use real wood in our interiors because it can split and splinter into sharp pieces in a collision. Lexus in 2018: Let's put fancy, etched slabs of glass inside ourcars on the door panels.
Toyota has used real wood in its cars for quite some time as Yamaha has been a long time supplier for hand crafted wood. Many of Toyota's engines were also co-designed by Yamaha esp the LFA.
Silvester Humaj the glass is safety glass. It’ll shatter into a million tiny pieces of broken. Yes, it can scrape you, but it won’t drive daggered shards that could cause life threatening injuries.
The fuel will overflow because there's a valve down in the gas tank pipe leading to the actual gas tank that closes after you close the fuel door protecting it from getting stolen and the fuel doesn't splash out, and in this case automatically closes after 30 min.
I have a '96 ES300 with 298k miles on it. The engine is still good. Once you own one of these, you know it's a quality car. My family isn't full of gearheads so the car didn't even get much maintenance and yet the engine runs like a well oiled machine.

The smog sensor is a sensor behind the grill that will detect smog, bad smells, etc. The main thing what it does when it detects a bad smell, it turns off outside air coming in... It works shockingly well. They had this feature in for years, even my old 2007 LS had it... There is a little filter in the sensor, that no one seems to know about, if it's not working well, you pull the filter out, clean it drop in it and it gets even better
Quick note, most expensive sedan Lexus ever made was the previous model (4th generation) LS600hL, price above $135,000.This 2018 model reviewed here lacks backseat screens with blu ray player, so full options would be even higher than $120,000. Also Doug fails to mention some nice features, like this car raises itself automatically 4cm once you step in or out of it, and all 4 seats go back to their original settings once you open any door, and it has a rear view camera mirror, etc
To my surprise the rear passenger side seat when reclined does not have the ottoman like function (where the feet area of the seat bottom pop up and out).. Plus i wish the executive package could go back to being named the "ultra Luxury"

I can confirm this, as the owner of a 1992 LS400 with 90K it still runs like a champ. Little known fact, the 1UZFE engine in the LS400's is so reliable it is FAA certified for use in aircraft, this is an engineering achievement most automakers have never achieved in their automotive lineup. What makes things even more interesting is that a 90K mile LS400 sells for around 4K - 5K (USD) when in good condition making them the single best value luxury sedan that just about anyone can own. Sure the styling is way out of date, and I have been made fun of for driving such an old car, until they get in on the inside and realize my 1992 Lexus has a better interior than their 2015 dodge dart, then they shut up.
There is a reason why people become attached to their LS400's, simply one of the best cars ever to be manufactured and a guide for how to properly build a luxury sedan.
Have an LS400 (92). Have loved it since the first day. Can still get it to a hair over 130. All problems are with the bolt on's & some minor electrical. Thx for the tour..must've been a loaner..interior scuffs are a distraction.. lol.

The fuel filler door warning makes perfect sense , the car has a system which closes another valve after 30 mins so that it doesn't leak / splash fuel just in case you forgot to close the cap!
I think smog function, closes the ventilation in the car so it circulates the air inside instead taking in the dirty air inside your car [I'm not sure if that's the function but i always thought about inventing such thing into the cars, was surprised people didn't came up with it yet] if it is then well done Lexus.
Most car manufacturers just opted to go with better air filters. E.g. the s class and the model s had air filters that can even filter out viruses for years
I3RV I'm pretty sure that's been around for a long time now. Sounds like your describing the climate control button that shows a car with arrows going in a circle inside it
@@chuarh7393 Softly speaking. Mentioning them in the same sentence is a disgrace. If someone doesn't get it, just check Doug's reviews of Maseratis. Or the reliability ratings.
Pretty sure with increasingly strict emissions standards that when you open the fuel door, it also vents the tank since the gas pump should recover any gas fumes, but they want to reduce the amount of fumes that are venting to the environment as much as possible.
Fuel caps on most modern cars are "non-venting", which means they store the gas fumes in charcoal canisters and then use those gases during certain driving operation, like cruising down the highway, when you're not demanding a lot of power.
If it's anything like my hybrid, it has something to do with the electrical bits. My fuel door has a pressure sensor and won't open until it's ready. You press the fuel door button, and it opens when there is no pressure built up.
Zzyzx Wolfe actually the fuel tank locks itself so nobody can put water in it if you forgot it open in the parking lot. I have seen many people forget the fuel door opened and next days complaining that their car is not working properly anymore. 😆
Yup, it's part of the hybrid "Partial Zero Emission Vehicle" version. The gas tank also has a rubber liner that contracts and expands with the fuel to avoid having fuel vapor. Which deteriorates over time - my 2004 Prius gas tank is officially an 11.9 gallon tank. When new, if I ran it to far enough empty that the warning light started blinking, I would put in 10-11 gallons. Now, I've run it to the warning light blinking and it only puts in about 8 gallons, as that rubber liner has stiffened and doesn't stretch to the full capacity any more. Between that and the battery losing capacity lowering mileage (got 45-50 MPG when new, now closer to 35-40,) my total range has dropped from almost 500 miles to barely 300 per fill.
Totally agree! If you like Lexus mate, I have a few reviews of them, including the IS350. If you have time to watch it I would love to hear your thoughts :)
20:18 My guess is that the fuel door helps keep gas from vaporizing and when the door is open and letting heat in, some mechanism blocks the line to the tank so the vapor can’t escape. If you fill the gas, the blocker is still engaged
In terms of technological advances, the Lexus is behind other brands like Audi and Mercedes. BMW is just dated. That HUD is a laughable when you see the Mercedes’ MBUX Augmented Reality Nav system. And Audi’s Parking Pilot, and HD Matrix LED headlights on the Audi’s is next gen technology. BUT with respect to comfort, quietness, and RELIABILITY, NOTHING beats Toyota/Lexus. Is that worth 120k? Not sure for me. We have both the 2018 Lexus RX and 2019 Audi A6. The Lexus has had zero maintenance issues. The Audi been in shop 3x already in last 3 months ownership for roof noise issue, haptic feedback touchscreen issue, and Auto Headlight issues.
David Topchiev - No one needs the technically guy I’m talking about? The technology I’m talking about is offered on all luxury cars, except some manufacturers do it better than others. What, do don’t use advanced Navigation? You don’t use High Density LED Auto Headlights? Are you completely poor and only can afford cars in the 15k range?? Bc most of these technology is becoming standard for all cars in the future. So good luck trying to say “no one needs the technology.”

Its crazy how much more reliable a Lexus is than an Audi, Mercedes, BMW. I was looking at the Audi S5 and RS5 and they have crazy problems with their engines, Mercedes C63 has head bolt issues in the engine, and the Mercedes Suvs always break down. I am really going to switch over to Lexus, I love what they are starting to come out with.
The rs5 has no engine problems. The 4.2 v8s that were made in the older a8s had timing chain tensioner issues they are made of (hard plastic) the engine in the rs5 has metal ones.

For those interested in the glass trim, "kiriko" glass is a Japanese style of cut art glass that's existed for a 100+ years. It's a Japanese twist on luxury that definitely says that Toyota is striving to offer even higher-end luxury models that compete with the likes of the BMW M760i if not some of the well-established British luxury brands (although it certainly doesn't have umbrellas or electrically deployed picnic tables).
Maikeru Go they should've put more of that glass material in the interior. Lexus interior is really out of date. Decades behind Audi and Benz.Lexus marketing their cars as reliable should stop that approach and focus on better designs because people who spend $120k on a car don't keep them that long to be worrying about reliability issues.
Huy Thai the material is exotic but still not used enough in the interior. BMW has had the same interior for ages with minor tweaks and now in 2018-19 it is the go to design for majority of it's competitors. Lexus's current flagship interior isn't advanced in any way, its center console looks like a big CD player. The rear center console of the previous Lexus flagship looked like a 1980's Panasonic car stereo. Why do you think Lexus killed the GS while BMW right now, a luxury car brand has more cars to choose from than Toyota. Lexus can't design a car to save their life.
Huy Thai you have to be the dumbest piece of shit. All of those cars are Japanese versions of cars made for the American market. The Aristo was the GS. BMW doesn't rebadge cars made for the American market and sell them in Japan. And as unreliable as BMW is I will still take one over a million mile Toyota anyday.
Ellipsis of Triple Tap With that logic, you essentially do the same thing when you listen to the radio. The radio doesn’t force you to ONLY listen to one station. You’re selective. Just like the internet. You missed that variable... (you’re not a genius).
My Lexus ES330 does that, it has all the service records for jus about ANYTHING in the primitive 2006 infotainment system. It works great, even though it’s pretty outdated.
props to you for having a ES330. When I first saw the ES330 on paper, I was meh. because it was fwd (so basically a luxury camry). But when I drove my uncle 2004 ES330 (he also have a 2017 ford explorer)... I was amazed how comfortable it was for a car that was 13 years old... Now I understand why my uncle bought his ES
genthe le I know right?? It is one of the most comfortable driving cars ever, way nicer than a Camry. Lexus completely re did the suspension for the ES, it’s like driving on a cloud.
DIAMLER saying the ES is the most comfortable car is laughable by itself, using a Camry as the objective/standard comparison for 'luxury car' is hilarious.
I would Love to have this car. That sprindle grille will be difficult to clean after a late night highway drive. Love the interior and subtle yet artful styling.
Just got this same exact car today. I am blown away! Smoothest car and surprisingly very quick for a 5,000lb+ lb car. I still need to get used to the nav system with the touchpad which will take some time. It just feels like it is built very well with a super quiet interior while driving! #mindblown
I have a 2017 LS460, I was at my local Lexus dealer today for service. It’s cool to give a direct comparison for LS460 and LS500. I’m 6’1 and the LS460 has plenty of head and leg room both front and back. The LC500 I had to turn my head sideways in the back seat and with the front seat in my position I had pretty much no legroom in the backseat. They ruined this car completely. My LS460 isn’t even a long wheel base.
The LS400 had a 4.0 liter V8 The LS430 had a 4.3 liter V8 The LS460 had a 4.6 liter V8 And we saw the 5.0 in the LC and the RC it would've made total sense to put it in this car but nope.
M A M N I was talking about the 5.0 bud. I know the 4.6 was extremely quiet and stable, it’s just that in your original comment you said the new lady should have had the 5.0
I thought the same thing at first but I honestly think Lexus dropped down to a twin-turbocharged V-6(only exclusively for the LS 500) because it was more for the fuel economy to compete with the other premium luxury sedans of today but without losing power(actually gained horsepower) as the trend on virtually all(well most) luxury sedans nowadays having 2.0 turbo(or twin-turbocharged) charged 4 cylinder engines for pretty much the same reason but I also think Lexus probably would have followed that same trend if the LS wasn't their flagship car since the other premium brands also did the same thing Lexus did with their higher end models.
Don't worry, you'll live. He makes his money reviewing the car, not cleaning it. Such time can be spent on either editing, or shooting another vehicle.
This Lexus LS500 has everything it seems. I almost expect there to be a pressure cooker in the trunk and perhaps a clever urinal that swings over from the console for rear passengers. I would like to see the car with a lighter interior perhaps sandstone or tan. The problem with the coming of self driving cars is they will also self crash if programed remotely to do so.
I know this is an aold comment, but most cars built after 2014 have some way to control the steering by computer, so non self driving cars are just as vulnerable to a hacker trying to kill you or something lol. but yeah, even self driving cars are SUPER secure, with no proper throughput connecting the self driving system to the internet.
I do love this car it's like a 4 door LC, but the LC is just gorgeous and is the opposite in terms of practicality haha. And with a N/A screaming V8 that adds to the LC appeal 😜
hey techmaster777 I understand that for the price of these lexus cars they are no where near the "best performing" vehicles. And you have a hellcat so you have pretty much the performance bargain but that begs the question, how often do you utilize all 700 horsepower on the public road? A bugatti or a camry, they both become the same performance on the road going 45 mph, now i'm talking about legally of course people speed all the time. I drive a Stinger and I can never floor my car, ever, or else i'm breaking every speed limit in the country. And it's quoted around 4.7 seconds and the LC will do like 4.4 or something but when Lexus and Randy Pobst designed the LC they wanted it to be the perfect "road car" on the road the limit performance just isnt as important and its things like the sound, the interior, the comfort that matter most. Thats where I think the LC knocked it out of the park also the Stinger and the performance of these cars are perfect for the road as you have effortless passing power way more than enough for the road. I just think cars like the LC are not looked at in the right perspective and I have sat in one, after sitting in a rolls royce, wow the LC quickly became my most favorite interior ever. IDk not a lot of people look at cars in that light in the past few years it's always been about the spec sheet. Of course driving something like a hellcat down the road is always a blast and every drive is a comical event but just wanted to share my thoughts on why cars like the LC are so good
Exhaust Sports Auto I use my roughly 750 horsepower constantly lol. I love full throttling just to pass people and using my big brembos to get back to speed limit in fractions of a second 😂 I know what you're saying and for the aspect it's true but a similarly equipped s class still has 100 more hp than the Lexus does and 0-60 isn't even important in these cars it's the passing time which the Mercedes would be significantly quicker at. Just saying yeah it's not all about power but to have the option to use a lot of power to get out of dangerous situations is beneficial. Not having that power on tap on a car you're spending 120k plus on is crazy imo :/ it's like spending 200k on a BMW i8 and you can't even compete with a 50k c7 base corvette
True but you have to admit you don't NEED more than like 4.5 seconds on the road. I'm no racing driver and the drive down to starbucks isn't the nurburgingring as much as us car guys would like to think. Cars like the LC have really changed my perspective on cars that being said, my next car will probably be a C7 Z06 😂😂but I certainly see the appeal for the LC if I didn't have the Stinger my coupe or sports car may very well have been the LC or a C63s amg. My ideal car is like a rolls royce wraith or a S63 amg coupe but obviously who doesn't want to drive mclarens or lambos on the road too you know

Makes sense to me but how about automatically closing fuel cap after 30 minutes instead of blocking from inside?
CommAndroid it most likely requires a good amount of force to close considering it's a seal. It wouldn't be worth it to add such a complicated and strong mechanism when you could just close it from the inside.
CommAndroid, plus, they could add logic in the ECU so that if you put the car into drive with the fuel filter open, it could automatically close.

Heck out the review I just made of a 2004. It’s amazing how many similar features they share.
You can't beat an LS 400 when it comes to value for money. I have a 97 and it still drives better than most modern cars.
There is a reason why people become attached to their LS400's, simply one of the best cars ever to be manufactured and a guide for how to properly build a luxury sedan.

My 2014 ELR has the same warning on it.

Best review I have heard so far regarding this particular car.
Maikeru Go definitely more unique and niche than other European luxury !

The S in LS doesn’t stand for sport
Those chalky scuffs all over the back seat area are driving me nuts. Get a damn damn microfiber towel for f's sake!
I know right, filthy interior!
Thank you!! Driving me nuts!
Don't worry, you'll live. He makes his money reviewing the car, not cleaning it. Such time can be spent on either editing, or shooting another vehicle.
Yes, or bending my mom over. In either case though, it still isn't his job to clean someone else's car.
Doug, the type of guy to bend moms over
What does it sound like when a cooler seat is cooling you?
Hi Poker buddy!
makes a muffled whirr sound
Sounds like Fairy farts.
Mini fans
Barely hear it in my 09 is250, I bet this one is quieter
These are coming on the used market under 40k really enticing for such an amazing car
Someday Doug will discover a car without quirks.
Exhaust Sports Auto it's still slow 😏
hey techmaster777 I understand that for the price of these lexus cars they are no where near the "best performing" vehicles.
Exhaust Sports Auto simple solution, drive fast, I don’t think I’ve followed a speed limit in years😂
True but you have to admit you don't NEED more than like 4.5 seconds on the road. My ideal car is like a rolls royce wraith or a S63 amg coupe but obviously who doesn't want to drive mclarens or lambos on the road too you know
My 2012 Ls460 which we drove from Milwaukee to Vegas , when we moved, works immaculately....I had a 750 i beamer that one day started leaking oil in the garage..they said a $50 pipe inside theengine is the problem...labor to get to the pipewas 10grand! I immediately traded it in for the LS...7 years later///very happy.
