  • Shakespeare in Love took home the Academy Award for 'Best Picture' in 1999, having been released the previous year, but how it managed to beat out stiff competition from the likes of Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line is a bit of a head scratcher! Even so, let's see how the movie holds up 25 years later.

The Truman Show not being nominated is a tragedy. It's so weird and different but a complete classic 🎉.

Hey, what’s up Bryan? I know it’s been a while since I’ve watched, but I’m trying to get back into the groove of being a regular again. Love your work as always man!

Thanks for the measured and considered review. It seems since people hate this movie, a lot of the hate is OTT. I agree it didn't deserve best picture but I honestly don't think it's a terrible win. Issue was 90s were absolutely stacked with bangers. I agree the best film of 98 was the Truman show. I would say the second best was there's something about Mary - again, not even nominated. I rewatched it recently and it still holds up - funny and clever. Comedies are notoriously underrated by the Oscars. I think that's part of why I don't mind the Shakespeare in love win. It's like the only way a comedy can win is mixed with other elements.
I agree the Dench Oscar win was the worst and I also love her. There wasn't much she could do with the role even though it was short. You compare to something like Anthony Hopkins win for silence of the lambs which is also quite short and he absolutely deserves that Oscar.
I actually don't mind Gwyneths win and think she was unfairly criticised. Cate blanchett was probably better but Gwyneth wasn't terrible like people say. Its actually quite a complex role, she's playing a woman pretending to be a man playing a male part in a play who at the climax plays the female part. I think a lot of hate came from her pretty pink dress and weepy speech. She said later her dad had just died so she was emotional.
I actually think the thin red line was the best film of the year if they wanted a war genre winner. Controversial opinion - I actually find saving private ryan a bit overrated. Don't get me wrong it's a great film, I just don't think it exclusively was as robbed as everyone says. The rest of the film doesn't match the battle of Normandy.
Fully agree you have to be a theatre kid to appreciate SIL. I'd also add you have to be a teacher/English major/prolific reader to fully appreciate it. I disagree a bit about the screenplay. I actually think it's very clever. They have so many little quips and puns related to literature that can be missed if the audience doesn't know the reference. Building a fictional story around Shakespeare's life I thought was clevely done. They come up with an explanation for Christopher Marlowe's real life death - currently a mystery.
    Thanks for the review.

The 5 films I most think deserved a nomination were Truman Show, Out of Sight, The Big Lebowski, Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line.

I'm with you, Bryan, I never understood the hype, the nomination, and especially the "winning" for this one. Back then, I remember thinking it was "meh" and only because I do have a fondness for costumes and "historical" settings. Otherwise, the late 90's/early 00's was about the time I finally realized rom-coms were not my genre of choice, and I didn't get why Gwyneth was being pushed as the next "it girl." Appreciate your review, as always!

@@carsonpeterson758 just my opinion man. If you like it I'm happy for you. I don't. It's too cheesey and a bit boring. It's like a feature length music video.

It’s far better than alone in the dark and it’s not cheesey if it has good production design and good acting and coherent dialogue
