As you mentioned the restrictions can be lifted by flashing the ECU. The limitations are put in place to limit liability and protect warranty coverage on excessive wear and tear.
Not necessarily. I'm going to cut out the names here cause this is a specia exclusive V10 BMW M Owners club but here is the online discourse (also btw others have a different way of launching it) Yes, It gets recorded You can do it about 7 times before burning out your clutch (supposedly) I’ve heard the number could be higher but it varies yikes - I didn't think it was that bad. 1ya year ago ive done it more than 15 times with my clutch, still works perfectly emphasis on “it varies” hahah you've never done it. It dumps the clutch, not drags the clutch. Driving in traffic wears it more. I have and have had a friend that did it 8 times before blowing his shit up not that it matters, this comment is over a year old lol Another part of this post/thread within a thread reads: If you have euro Launch control you can adjust the rpm by movin the cruise control switch when the car is in Launch mode. I have launched my car probably about a 100 times on this clutch and it still works good 😅 Me ~ THATS AWESOME. Will try, noted One more for the road! : If you want to hard launch it take off all the traction control and everything and double tap the gas. Floor it once real fast then let go then floor it again and keep floored. Hard launch. The car will move from the first tap? i wonder the same lol no it don't....do it fast. not if you do it quickly. I often tap my pedal when moving slowly to give that “Honda rev” no (in response to "The car will move from the first trap"?)
Yes It is available on the e92 M3. I just tried it out this weekend with Martin B. Head of BMW Motorsports USA. Power needs to be on and DSC off and same procedure as the M6. The cool thing about the M3 is that you can rev to the redline to launch....be careful....its quick!!!
And this is why, as much I hear about s.m.g being crap, I will still take it over the manual just for that feature, but not too many of those launch control launches, it will eventually damage the transmission. Good video
@furiouskid100 This is the long way around. You can program it to use the M button and all you do is hit the M button and you are ready to launch. Still nothing wrong with the GTR as an alternate choice.
@RidesChannel I have a 2008 BMW M3 and i came to a full stop and pressed the M button and left foot on brake and in 1st gear , i release my foot off the brake and that has the same effect as launch control but it doesnt mess up the gear box cause its a double clutch
@cspro23 If its on a down hill yes it would because the brakes are not engaged. So if that happens accelarate with your right foot and slightly press the brake pedal with your left foot and release it when you release the gear lever. Just dont press the brake pedal to the max, just enough to keep it still.
ill try it on my M5 as soon as I have time. I raced it this weekend and lost the first time because I didnt know about launch control then read up on it when I got home
@Waton007 this is the speed of gear changing, on the smallest "bar" the gears will change very soft and smooth, but on 6 bars it will fuck you up super-speed gearchanging. Sorry for bad grammar
Yes pre program the M button settings. Then all you have to do is push the M button and hold the gear leaver forward and you're ready to launch. The second question depends on the driver and distance of the Race. The M6 would win on top speed over a longer distance.
There is a button. One has to pre program the M buttons settings then all you do is push the M button and hold the gear leaver forward and you're ready to launch. We will be posting a video of how to setup the M button ready for launch.
Nice vehicle! It's the same procedure one the E46 M3 as well, if it's equipped with SMG. As far as I can recall, it was sport, DSC off, turn the shift mode to 6, first gear, floor it and release the shift lever. GO...
I was wondering how you get that extra shift bar. Read it somewhere a while ago, but I forgot how to get it. I think I'll pull the M5 out the garage this evening and try this. Good to know. This should put some more W's in my stacked racing column.
Launch control was first used on f1,it will controll you're launch it will lock the wheels and controll the power to the wheels, and the whole car will be in a race mode. You have to own one or at least drive it to understand what it does exactly.
@louis2710 do you own one of these cars?? i happen to drive an 08 M5, and after extensive searching through ALL my manuals, nothing could be found on Launch Control. the dealership even told me they prefer not to teach it to people due to the unnecessary damage it can impose on the clutch.
So what would b the best launch control set up in a drag race, i noticed u weren't on m mode, i did the same thing but with m mode on, its there any difference?
I think this has something to do with replacement parts and etc. Launch controls are extremely hard on the gear box. Especially the clutch. And in certain cases, you can crack a gear or mess up the differential (not very likely on a stock car). Since BMWs, especially M models, are made in Germany, not all parts are readily and quickly available in the US. The repair costs are probably also a lot higher in the US.
Hi I have a question, I have a E64 M6 and I was wondering if i can click the M button because it makes a significant difference on speed and handling and gear changes... but the real question was can I click M (which turns on the power anyway) and just manually turn off DSC and still perform this launch?
For those who are asking why European models rev to 4k- It it's because the USA has a governor on our speed and most m5's can only go about 160 because of it, unless you take the cap off. In europe you can go 211 mph. The USA put caps on fast cars to prevent racing.
because usa models have much longer warranties than that of europe, so to prevent people from coming in at 15k miles on their car for a new clutch under warranty, they limit it, and a launch from 1.5k rpms is much less damaging on the clutch than a 4k rpm launch.
Hi all, can i make the same thing on a BMW 525d? Yeah, i'm a little bit scared to make that, without a confirmation so thanks for responding... Bye all
From what I have heard, BMW justifies this by saying that the EU warranty lasts for only 2 years, while the US warranty is for 4 years. Since launching is very hard on the car, they only allow lower revs in order to reduce the wear and tear.
It's not a power controlling launch control so mashing the gas is incorrect unless you have warm tires or prepped surface. launching at 1,500 is fine as long as you do a quarter throttle and gradually apply gas after you launch to get to the floor. That is for the street on a track if you have euro spec 4k might actually be useful.
Here is the thinking and engineering behind why gas powered cars are history. They are like Rolex watches. Beautiful, complex and expensive, and long ago their primary function, accuracy surpassed by a cheap phone. Simplicity, reliability and functionality all sacrificed for status and snob appeal.
I use launch control on my cousins BMW ///M3 and my little cousin was in the back and it scared the sh*t outta him. As soon as we turn off DSC damn I didn't get scared cuz he used it lots of times when I'm inside . But one thing I can tell for sure is that the first you sit inside an ///M3 you will get scared if launch control is on
dude im about to go from a honda civic type r to a E60 M5, I did not have the loud muffler tho. Im realy impressed with the e60 just waiting for the right one to come up for sale.
It is much easier to learn to drive a stick shift car...you don't need to mess with all these different options. How long did it take to get to 60mph in this video? About 2 minutes...If i could afford a new M5 i'd definitely buy one with manual transmission. Automatic is for girlz.
Of course...BMW builds a feature in its holy grail that would kill the car. OMG!!! XDXD Btw: Why is this difference between US and EU models...i mean that european M5s in launch control mode revs up til around 4500 rpm while US models only rev up to 1500...The european model reaches its maximum torque much faster, so i think it might accelerate faster. Higher starting rev might be harmful to the clutch though.
uhm, thats NOT launch control. you know it, it's called launch CONTROL for a reason. Launch control is when you get up to 60mph / 100 kph without wheel spin, thus a controlled launch. This was just hammering down the gas basically, no need for that sequential gear "trick". You must be thinking of a cheap slushbox automatic with a torque converter. As much as I still prefer my "old fashioned" manual transmission, these SMG transmissions are worlds apart from a cheap torque converter automatic, and do not operate in even remotely the same way. Since the SMG has no juicebox to waste engine power as heat, hammering the accelerator with all the stuff turned off, as you said, would just rev the engine to fuel cut, just like in a manual car, and would do nothing to control wheelspin. This system monitors wheelspin and keeps it low for a faster launch.
But this didn't control the wheel spin, did it? And if the car does have launch control, it should only allow it to rev to around 3k rpm. Otherwise, it's like you say.
You clearly don't own an E6x M car then. This IS launch control & it's adjustable. Hard to get these cars to hook up really well. Tires & surface need to be warm, sticky etc as it is with just about every car. There are plenty of videos of launch control working better than this particular example. Could be that he's running an inferior tire than stock too for all we know.
xBuzz996 This is US Launch Control, the M5s SMG transmission has US and Euro version, the US version sets it to 1.5k rpm and Euro is 4k rpm so its much better
now i just need a BMW M5

@Greyson Aron yea, I've been watching on flixzone} for since november myself =)
its lovely to see 250mls range with a full tank.. hell yeah. !!

As you mentioned the restrictions can be lifted by flashing the ECU. The limitations are put in place to limit liability and protect warranty coverage on excessive wear and tear.
Actually you can use louch control only 15 times, after you'll have to change clutch, because this clutch wasn't created to restain such loads.
Not necessarily. I'm going to cut out the names here cause this is a specia exclusive V10 BMW M Owners club but here is the online discourse (also btw others have a different way of launching it)

you can adjust the rpm it holds at with the cruise control up/down while you are holding the gas down

@Waton007 Transmission speed. You can choose the spped for comfort or more bars for sportiness.
Out of curiosity, is this only possible by holding down the gear leaver, or can one also do it by pulling the paddle?
Thanks for the tips.
Is this the quickest way to launch the V10 or can you brake boost it?
@TheArkan93km Shift aggressiveness. 1 bar is comfort, 6 bars is fast-shifting.
the launch controll simulates dropping the clutch. and yes it damages the car, as your putting pressure on the autobox's clutch.
@RidesChannel great video man! Will this work with the M3 E46?
There is a button. One has to pre program the M buttons settings then all you do is push the M button and hold the gear leaver forward and you're ready to launch. We will be posting a video of how to setup the M button ready for launch.

Interesting...I would have used "launch control' at BMW performance school if I would have known this. I'll have to try this sometime on our M6.
After launch, do you have to shift? Or does it do it for you?
how many times you can use the launch control and deos it bad for the gear if you use it many times
For those who are asking why European models rev to 4k-
It it's because the USA has a governor on our speed and most m5's can only go about 160 because of it, unless you take the cap off. In europe you can go 211 mph. The USA put caps on fast cars to prevent racing.
It's only available on the smg. You can use the clutch to launch a manual.
@ObbiShade eruo specs hit 4000 revs. US 1500. Dunno why (fuel emissions maybe?!)
because usa models have much longer warranties than that of europe, so to prevent people from coming in at 15k miles on their car for a new clutch under warranty, they limit it, and a launch from 1.5k rpms is much less damaging on the clutch than a 4k rpm launch.
Any clues why USA versions revs only 1.5k rpms, and EU-models 4k?
Wait does the 2011 BMW 328 or 335i U.S Spec have launch control as options?
@AntDX316 Yeah, its called a manual transmission :) hehe Dump the clutch at 4k, that should solve your problem.
@szabee07 US Warranty vs Euro Warranty - US has limited the revs to avoid warranty issues.
Hi all, can i make the same thing on a BMW 525d? Yeah, i'm a little bit scared to make that, without a confirmation so thanks for responding... Bye all

Pedal is to the metal! US Spec M6 only rev to 1500 on launch control. Euro Spec rev to 4500 on launch control.....FYI
Question. .How Do You Do This On An e46 Rather Then the e92's?
how do you do launch control on a manual caR?
Here is the thinking and engineering behind why gas powered cars are history. They are like Rolex watches. Beautiful, complex and expensive, and long ago their primary function, accuracy surpassed by a cheap phone. Simplicity, reliability and functionality all sacrificed for status and snob appeal.
i tried this but the rpm didnt hold still and when i relese the gear it didnt move so what i did wrong ??
Ah I see. Okay, thank you for answering my question. Great video by the way. Happy driving.
What if the gear lever wont lunch? How to reset?
@Mrfantasticel Yes flash the cpu/chip - through dinan etc
@pek1313 No launch available on your model....
Why does the Europe model rev higher?
But how does the launch control that holds the RPM to 4500??
The launch setup forces you to launch in 1st gear. After launch you could switch to Drive but that would defeat the purpose.
@WeezyBestRapperAlive Absolutely .... M5 2006 through 2010 ...same as M6.
I use launch control on my cousins BMW ///M3 and my little cousin was in the back and it scared the sh*t outta him. As soon as we turn off DSC damn I didn't get scared cuz he used it lots of times when I'm inside . at which point clutch and bearings explode ?
Hi.
Can you do this with a 530i that has an SMG tranny?
Why do the LC of EU models use higher RPM than US models?
2:14 ether that exhaust note blew you away or it was so loud it scared the crap out of you lol
how i can use Launch contorl in My M5 F10? please Share video or write (((
@jhafanador69 Not a fake accent - actually South African English.
Its a smg transmissiion so it wont shift unless you shift
your neighbours must love you.
The paddle would have been nice, sort of like F1. Unfortunately the only way to launch is using the gear lever in the forward position.
in my opinion , launching from 1,5rpm is better than 4k because in 4k you have much more wheelspin....
What does the bars mean?
How fast you want the gearshifts to be!!
How intense the shifts are
Shift ferocity
That's still an impressive launch even at a minimal 1.5k
Xbuzz996 you probably drive one of those Hondas with a loud muffler .
Different world buddy.
dude im about to go from a honda civic type r to a E60 M5, I did not have the loud muffler tho. Im realy impressed with the e60 just waiting for the right one to come up for sale.
Mark Park I'm actually selling one right now
i think launch control is only if
we have smg.
i think
ths is launch control Euro or american?
Very helpful. Thanks!
@RidesChannel Thank you.
As if I need another reason to love this car....
@RidesChannel M/// POWER!! :)
No brake needed as it is 1st gear.
why do they make these complicated transmissions, when they could so easily make a standard manual?
is it the same for the launch control on the 335i? I have the new 7 speed DCT transmission.
The 335i does not come with a DCT, the 335is does.
When u push the gear in front, why the flag isn't comming on the dash ?
Because this guy has no clue what launch control is, you'll get virtually to zero wheel spin in launch control mode
The flag symbol is only the the F10
@@smellyhoney and the x5

uhm, thats NOT launch control. you know it, it's called launch CONTROL for a reason. Launch control is when you get up to 60mph / 100 kph without wheel spin, thus a controlled launch.
