The smoking writer was probably John Swartzwelder-who I think still has the record for having written the most episodes of the show. Eventually they stopped tolerating his smoking, so he went to a diner and sat in the booth and smoked and wrote there. Then, when, they banned smoking in restaurants, he bought the booth from the diner, brought it into his home, and continued writing and smoking in the booth. Eventually he stopped going to the studio except for when his scripts were finished. Then he would just drive up in his car, hand them out the window, and drive home. He's a legend in comedy, and was considered reclusive, though I know they called him on one of the commentaries and he actually answered his phone. He was cooking a steak, if I remember correctly.

His name was at the front of most of the epically amazing episodes, I noticed that as a kid. Homer gets a gun springs to mind, and the stonecutters, Frank Grimes, so many. Conan to his credit wrote the Monorail episode, which is also way up there.

It really was an incredibly written show for a while.

I lived in the UK when Simpsons was becoming popular in the US and I saw my first episode at a friends house on Sky TV (satellite)
It was the episode where homer finds out he has a half brother named Herb, who runs a car manufacturing company.

Interesting that the CBC in Canada also had two episodes of the Simpsons on after school when I was a kid.
Used to be you'd get home, watch Kids in the Hall on the Comedy Network, and then switch to CBC to watch the Simpsons.

Love how no matter what country you are from everyone's channel 4 on TV was jist called "channel 4". 1 2 and 3 all have different fancy names but its universal that we call channel 4 just that.

My generation in the UK LOVED The Simpsons.
My Dad refused to pay for Sky TV so I had to give my more affluent friends blank VHS tapes and just ask them do fill it up with Simpsons episodes.
I can remember at one point I had about 20 blank tapes full of Simpsons and Beavis and Butthead episodes.
Conan's name always stuck out in the credits so when I found out he had a show I immediately remembered where I knew his name

Ireland was the same. One episode at 6pm on the national broadcaster (RTE 2), and because we were lucky enough to get Channel 4 too, we could also switch to their showing at 6pm in case we preferred their episode.

That’s really funny that even across the world kids were watching two episodes of Simpsons a day. I remember there was a point where the local Fox affiliate here took off the Simpsons and they got so many emails they had to bring it back. And they announced it with commercials that literally said “now stop emailing us!”

To correct Ed (sorry to be pedantic), but BBC2 Simpsons in the late 90's/early 00's aired once a day on BBC at 6pm, except for one day a week (I think either Wednesday or Friday) where it was a double bill.

sorry to be "that guy" but ed is kinda right at 1:08m, UK/England did have satillite tv back in 98 with Sky owning first run rights to simpsons and still does due to contract with FOX. BBC only had syndication rights to older seasons and now onlder epsiodes on Channel4. I was like him too, but i watched all new epsiodes on sky one from 6PM onwards it was 2 hour simpsons feast. Conan's epsiodes like monorail was so funny and had proper storylines
