True, but 3/4 of Thiem's wins over Djokovic were on clay and the AO is like Djokovic's backyard, much like Wimbledon is for Federer and the FO is for Nadal. Djokovic has a perfect 7/7 record in finals here. Beating him in the final is almost on the same level as beating Rafa at the FO. Thiem will make it a good match but beating Novak is unlikely.

Fed is out, it would have been Djokovic, which would have meant 70% chance Novak would have won, but Nadal could have beaten him, knowing 20GS was within his reach, and would have been really inspired, and probably done something 'a little special,' to unnerve Novak, so all in all, I'm glad beyond belief Nadal is gone, no more threat to Fed now, at least at best, Novak wins this, but is 3 behind, and Fed gets RG and Wimbledon later this year, and gets to 22 slams.

Being a Nadal fan this is heart breaking to watch but this has been a problem with Nadal, whenever he plays someone with more agility and endurance than him he struggles like with Djoker in this case Thiem. He still fought hard but it got to him in the end. Those countless net points remind me of the younger days when Nadal played Federer, he used to get the same points against Federer. Man this increases my respect for Federer where he also struggled to play against players with more endurance and defense play like Nadal, he found ways to overcome them, like we saw this couple of days against Tennys and Millman, but Thiem was completely a different beast against Nadal, he deserved this match. Now I hope at least one of the Next Gen takes the crown.

Thiem's level of tennis is right up there with the Big 3 on hard courts now. Of course we already know he's been the second best on clay for the last 2-3 years. In recent months he's beaten Roger and Novak at the ATP Finals and now Rafa here. His game doesn't have any weaknesses now, other than the backhand service return. Hopefully he can keep this up because tennis needs more players in the mix at the top.

it seems that Thiem has figured Nadal out where most people haven't....you can't just go trading for power and movement with nadal....You could see Thiem hitting arcing balls to the baseline most of the rallies and not moving nadal around much. These arcing balls don't bounce beyond the baseline much so Nadal couldn't stand too far behind the baseline, taking away his angles and also setting up perfecttly for passing shots...and when nadal t ries to go for a powerful crosscourt shot, he hits it back harder towards Nadal forcing Nadal to simply redirect the shots
you could see Nadal a bit flustered when Thiem not only got to those shots to the corners, but hittingi them back with such power

Spectacular movement, hitting the ball deep, hard, and with great placement, and winning grind-out games/tiebreaks. He's not the same caliber returner or defender, but is he ever fun to watch. Wouldn't be surprised if this is his first major win.

I think I would ultimately side with Djokovic simply because I would like to see his slam count closer to Nadal's and Federer's. But I definitely want Thiem to win some slams in his career. He's right on the cusp and the dude is playing phenomenal tennis right now. I think he'll beat Zverev and be in the final though.
