But I never really used it for what it was built for so I sold it and down graded to a diesel Pajero Exceed. $40k back into the bank and a good comfortable all rounder. Virtually no deprecation. Its such an anti-thesis this car. Gives a middle finger to massive lcd screens, fancy suspension, zillion way power adjustable this and that, back to basics, honest mechanical engineering. This is indeed a dying breed albeit not dead yet until Toyota sells these. Love this car.
I'm here again in 2020 dreaming of owning one of these for my life in the Aussie bush. I had the Troopy with the sweet 4.5 V8 diesel motor & I boy I really do miss that effortless power. I think this 76 series with its 4 doors would make a damn fine 4x4 for my needs.
Forbidden were I live, but I’m renting one (again) in SA for a trip to Botswana. Last time we had a really old one, and it purred through 5000 km of tracks, rivers, dunes, beaches (well, I got stuck, but dug myself out). God I loved that car. Driving through modern city traffic on the last day I was overtaken by all the other cars, zipping here and there, and there’s not one of them, even the fanciest, fastest, most luxurious that I’d prefer being in. You’re absolutely right: if you can get one, don’t wait!
There is a law that states that you can only import a car to the US if it is either, extremely exotic, is no longer made, or is at least 25 years old. This is all that I know about importing. I’m sure there is more in the fine print
Import a 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 then. It's past the minimum 25 year old limit, get one with the 1HZ inline 6 diesel without the turbo. The 1HZ engine are bulletproof and will last to the end of time.
I recently bought one of these. It's as they say, bad turning circle, no bells a whistles but to drive I like it over any other car I've driven. It's also the only vehicle where other LC drivers give you a wave :) there's something different about these and I wouldn't want to change it.
65k Australian dollars = 49k U.S. dollars, I think that's pretty cheap, too freaking bad Toyota will never bring LC70 to the states. But if Toyota decides to do so, I think it'd be sold out the 1st year for sure.
The 70 series is not the last of the breed, there is one other - the Mercedes G-Wagon, which is nearly double the price. The 70 series deserves a 5/5 for its application. It's not a soccer mum car. It's not a town car. It's designed and built for the bush, and there it reigns supreme.
Not reliable unfortunately. Just look at the people that need heavy duty application: everyone is having 70 series. After i guess a Wrangler with a proper setup is maybe more capable for extrem 4*4 that the Land Cruiser. But for heavy duty usage and pure reliability then indeed: "it reigns supreme"
Weirdly, I like the 70 series LandCruiser. I've been a fan for a while. Even though as you pointed out, as a hobby or weekend 4WDrivist, I will never test it's full potential.
1st thing LC 70 series will never die Toyota wont stop producing it from Australia to Africa these vehicle is loved. 2nd Nissan Y61 is not DEAD here in Middleast we have still have Nissan producing it!
Probably dont meet your safety requirements, prior to 2016 they only had abs and 2 airbags, they do have more stupid bags and traction control as well as an evil DPF now though. It could also be emissions requirements.
It's funny how there's all the rivalry between 4wd's but one day, probably not too far away now, we'll all look back and say "Ah, those were the good old days. 70 series Landcruisers, Defenders, old Patrols, Wranglers, Jimny's.... proper 4wd's, all gone now"
competition, emissions, bah blah blah. from japan it would cost 90k plus for all the upgrades. toyota would be better off building a factory for it in the US then selling the damned things to canada, and all countries south of the border.
Hey Toyota 👋 this is a beautiful rival of the G Class here in the US. Just put leather seats in there, an armrest, 6 speed automatic, apple/android car play and sell it for 120k, I’ll buy one ☝️
$2700 for A/C?? If I was spending upwards of $65000 I would expect the bloody thing to have A/C, especially with the interior and exterior that's cost them almost nothing to upgrade since the 80's. Aussie outback = A/C Toyota, lift your game!!
It baffles me how people just pay that and don't even flinch. I guess because its got a Toyota badge it must be worth it...... Sure the Toyota Landcruiser is legendary and its an icon but it is soo far overpriced its ridiculous. The 79 Series Dual Cabs only come with 2 speakers because I guess an extra 2 speakers for the rear would make the vehicle unprofitable at its current market price. I would be interested to know if any other $65k + vehicles are sold with A/C as an option and only 2 speakers. Not to mention different wheel track width front and rear because once again why widen 2 axles and housings when you only really "need" to widen the front .........
"they are that price for a reason. obviously people understand what they buying, a bulletproof tank that will last many years. Solid axles 4WD yeah my kind of tough vehicle. There's not so many of them left, in the US you can only get solid front axles in a new SUV if its a Wrangler or a G-Wagon. I wish I can lay my hands in an SUV like this other than a Wrangler.
I can only see one negative in this amazing 4x4 and that is the obvious difference between widths for front and back axles. Yep I know it was to fit the big V8 and I'm very impressed that it has this feature. I can't see a dealer having an issue with throwing the AC in if you are paying cash and there's no trade. Before I make a purchase though, I would like to know from the panel here what the cost would be to widen the rear axel? I assume this can be accomplished by fitting wider rims on the back axle. Is this true? Do I need to worry about it? Is it easy to sort? Does it cost a lot of money? Cheers in advance. I'm too old for dune buggy bullshit. I just want an off roader that I can take anywhere. I not interested in caning the shit out of a car. I take it easy but I want to know I've got the power though when I need it. Comfort doesn't really bother me as I've had a Hilux 4x2 for 20 years and it's a real bone rattler. I would like a bit of space in the drivers seat as I'm a big bloke and it gets quite tight in the 4x2. Is it accessory friendly (eg Winch, side rails, bar work, console upgrades, space for extra batteries, all that sort of thing) ? I've thought long and hard about troopie vs wagon and I'd prefer wagon. When of you must know something about all this. I don't want to ask a 4wheel drive centre because they'll just steer me where they want me to go. Cheers in advance :)
From my understanding there are a few options to widen the rear wheel track. Different offset rims would be the cheapest but then you always have to carry 2 different offset spares. To get it fixed properly, there are a few options and I believe prices are around $3000 to $10,000. Toyota could probably stick their badge on a giant turd and ask a ridiculous price and people would still rush out to buy it though so in terms of business profitability why not?
Yes, I agree. It is money I should not have to spend on a car worth 30,000 and selling for 70,000 plus. I'm also moving on to the troopie as my preference as these present more storage in the back. I think I'll check out the 2nd hand market and see if I can get one that already has this axle thing sorted out. I just can't justify that kind of money on a new one with these very basic features. I am reliably informed the snorkel needs to be replaced too as the Toyota one is not very good. Thanks for corresponding :)
