As someone who always wanted a sibling close to his age, I feel that.
As someone with two half siblings who don't live with me, I felt it too.
I grew up with a younger brother about 1.5 years apart. I want to say the relationship has been rocky. He's always been better at everything. People liked him more than me. He got to experience things I couldn't. Life has just been easier on him. We rarely see eye to eye. Frankly, I can't help but to recent him for it. Even though I don't blame him for it. I blame autism. Sure, not everyone experiences this sort of relationship, but some do and it sucks.

This episode hit different for me as someone who had been an only child with an estranged sibling living an ocean away who I'd only met about twice in my life.
@@mantistoboggan8740 sameish . And worse when I wanted a sibling my mom got pregnant with my sister and miscarried. That was bad enough, but then she had to remove her uterus which was tumor ridden (hence the miscarriage), so no chance to try again either

Sub. Totally. I used to live in Japan (for 4 years), had a crew over there. I showed them some American tv on occasion. My favorite was getting them to watch the chinpokemon episode of South Park (I thought they'd kick my ass; they loved it, thought it was the funniest thing they ever saw), and a lot of Japanese, particularly younger folks, know enough English from school and movies that they prefer subs. I think mainly so they can hear the English slang/curses, they think it's hysterical.
@@erdrickcapet3945 honestly I always prefer watching a show with the original language. There is never not something awkward about the translation.
Monolingual but I assume the Japanese dubs have a similar awkwardness going in reverse. There is also cultural/linguistic things that while I can’t fully comprehend I can see what’s happening. And it makes me wonder exactly how the joke was meant to go.
But whenever translated those untranslatable moments get lost and can even end up changing the scene entirely.
Like I can tell in the Subbed version there was a miscommunication caused by a word with 2 or more meanings.
But because English doesn’t have that problem with that word, and they can’t manufacture a similar miscommunication, we get a guy overreacting to literally nothing. Or character changes their personality for a few seconds to make the reaction make sense and say something they would never say.

I think it’s pretty valid for Junichiro to feel the way he does. Without any kind of warning he was forced to meet his deadbeat father along with his half brother who had a life he was denied. That’s gonna stir up some strong emotions.
Junichiro was beyond pissed at the family dinner.
I mean but then again look at josuke higashikata in JJBA while a little similar Josuke did it in a much more honorable way that to me personally I like, he waits for them to be away from other people while still majorly confronting him about being left at birth. To me family issues unless violent needs to be kept within the family.
I think Hank would have had a way better experience if Cotton met Junchiro by himself at first. Then let Junchiro meet hank seperately on that trip and seperate the cotton resentment from how Hank genuinely had no idea.
I don't resent my half siblings for having the father who bailed. I hate him though. But if he showed up with them, that resentment might transfer.

Having Junichiro and Hank both be stereotypes of their home cultures, and also stereotype other cultures, only makes them a better match.
I really hate how Cotton's death episode ignored the character development in this episode and the one where Cotton took over Peggy's rehab.

The Japan episode is one of my all time favorites, and i liked that Junichiro was pretty much the Japanese version of Hank too bad he only appeared 2 times in the show...but on a related note, i sometimes wonder what the Japan episode would've been like if they made it so that Junichiro had 3 friends that were the Japanese parodies of Bill, Dale and Boomhauer.

He says "Robots" in the same way Hank says "Propane." Hank is only an assistant manager, but is involved with the whole business. But when you wanna impress, you say "Propane and Propane Accessories."
Well, we've seen Hank act as a salesman and preform service checks a few times.

@101Volts technically that was the manager. He was checking the propane status, noticed a mess, followed it to the freezer, and saved the manager. That's the Nancy and Dale episode where Nancy finally ends the affair with John Redcorm
Also, I think Junichiro (Juunichiro?) only said 'Robots' because he thinks Hank is dumb. He's probably also annoyed at Hank talking loud and slow at him and making hand gestures, like he thought Junichiro wouldn't know what propane tanks and such were.
I don't tell someone I'm a system's analyst. Too vague and boring. I just say I write reports to automate them. Or, if it's a donor to the school, so the college knows when to ask you for more money. :)
It also could just be the language barrier. Sure he would know how to say "Robots" in english, but that doesn't necessarily mean he can translate exactly what he does (I know he speaks perfect English, but even fluent people don't know very specific industry nomenclature.

This is one of favorite Cotton episodes, alongside with the one where he took the fall for Bobby, inspired Peggy to walk again and the one where he needed to get the Vietnam vets to join his group.
I always thought that Cotton was probably the best character on the show.
I always enjoyed the episode where he sent bobby to military school.

Dude has flaws but has class at times and moments of humanity. Plus, he's not the worst in-law to have when compared to kahn's father in-law.
My shot in the dark is that Boomhaur is absent most of the episode as he's trailing Cotton to ensure foreign relations with the Republic of Texas go smoothly.

@@SomeUsernameSomeoneElseTookIt Boomhauer has been shown to have access to some pretty confidential and incredibly advanced government technology. There have been other instances in the show where he has travelled to places at speeds impossible to naturally produced. So naturally, the most obvious answer is that boomhauer has access to some sort of teleportation device created by the government. That’s the only way to explain how he travelled so quickly between countries. Although, it could be his government issued decoy clone, which has also been shown at points throughout the series.

I always found that joke a bit flat as something like that would only exist in higher end hotel and would be at the back of the room next to a window not the front. Don't know about airing dates but I feel they were just trying to copy the punchline from futurama when Fry is looking for an apartment.

I read a theory that the reason Cotton treats Hank so poorly is because of his Japanese lover. He was in love with her, and then was abruptly sent back to America to a lacklustre life. He settled with marrying someone he didn’t love and had Hank. The family is a constant reminder of what Cotton could have had.
I think that he just hate what America did to him. I don't know if he met Hank's mom before or after the war, but, Cotton is just bitter for the what he became, and that bitterness push him to hate everything in his life, specially knowing he left Michiko. He think he deserved more for what he did, but America doesnt care about him or any veteran.
Hmm, you know, that kind of makes sense. Since he conflates his love/hate for Japan with the relatives he has there, it would follow that he'd conflate his 'loved ones' in America with the country as well...
My favorite part is Junichiro screaming, "I kick-a your ASS!"

Random thought I think cotton may have had undiagnosed dementia.
Not only was he very forgetful, if often found himself confused very often and would get very angry when he would be contradicted. Especially when it came to him remembering the war.
Could be why he lost character development towards the end of his life since dementia isn't a straight decline, but a rocky road with some days being smoother than others.
Also lets not forget that cotton died just to spite Peggy. That's some big ball energy right there

When I first saw that Scene I was blown away but I felt it at the same time like if I was in that room I’d be looking all over for some space
God that has always gutted me. I would be SO disappointed if I just wasted my entire vacation thinking we got a shitty hotel room.
I’m more upset that you didn’t mention more about the brief yet loving relationship between Bobby and the Japanese girl, especially towards the end when Cotton tells Bobby he has to go after her and say goodbye or else he’ll have regrets like he did.
See I think Junichiro is as proud of his work with his robots as Hank is with propane. So when someone asks what business he's in he wants them to be sure what he does.
Exactly, it's not about what he does, but the commodity that he provides.
Plus, English isn't his first language. And robots are pretty much well known and it was easiest to say, and required little explanation.

While Junichiro was bitter at Cotton for not being there for him when he grew up it probably was for the best that he wasn't considering how difficult and a jerk he was to Hank as a boy.

Maybe tilly and Hank were just a way for cotton to try and regain what he lost, what he could've had in Japan and that's why he's always been so bitter especially to them.
Because tilly wasn't who he truly loved and Hank wasn't the son he really wanted.

@@alysin2439 It seems to me that Cotton was a more pleasant person right after the war ended but as the years went by the horrific memories of what he went through during the war gradually degraded his personality. I suspect he wasn't so much of a jerk yet when he met Tilly.
I will point out that Michiko was one of the few women cotton treated like a person, for argument, he may have become a better man there, it would be amazing if Mike judd gave us at least a what if script (I'd accept even a rough draft)
I always assumed he just said “Robots”, because he felt Hank, this slack-jawed yokel who was raised by his deadbeat dad, was too stupid to understand his real job title, and didn’t want to get into it, with him.
Except Hank comes off anything but slack jawed. That jaw has no slack, nothing on the man does.
What I love most is how when Junichiro starts to confront Cotton, though Michiko is shocked and knows what's coming next, Cotton is actually impressed and compliments his son for having a spine. It isn't until after Junichiro denounces his paternal heritage that Cotton goes on his rampage. Another aspect I think could've gotten more attention was that not only was Junichiro a child of wedlock, but also the mixed-race bastard of an American soldier growing up in 1950/60s Japan, which puts his contempt for Cotton in more of an understandable light.

Could be worse. Due to Anti-miscegenation laws in the US, Michiko would have been forced to have an abortion by the US military, and then sterilised. Japanese war brides came at a cost, at least compared to German or Italian.
The point you made about Junichiro's mixed racial heritage and that he was born out of wedlock, I was thinking the same thing. Its possible that the other kids may have teased and bullied him for it, because children are real good at picking up on things that makes a person "different." Here's hoping he has his own gang, a Japanese version of Hank's friends.

The one thing I found the most frustrating is the ending part when Peggy and Hank realize the room they were staying and was much bigger and they all cramped themselves and a little room instead of pulling the partition aside and see that it's a whole suite 🙄

Someone who works on robots probably has a degree in computer science or electrical engineering, with specialization in robotics. I imagine more tech-oriented universities might have degrees in robotics, as well.
But in the scene where Hank busts into the factory, it kinda looks like Junichiro's position is a bit more blue-collar than that, and that he keeps it dumb to avoid seeming more like Hank than he wishes to be.

I really like this episode. I really liked the part when Jenichiro said you didn't think this was your whole room? Then he opens up a door and the hills see rotten fruit and a gorgeous view of mount Fuji.
Looking at it just makes me wish I could live there.

When I was a kid. I rented a N64 game called Mystical Ninja: Goemon. after the opening cutscene Goemon is inside his house and must go outside to start the adventure. As a little kid, I didn't know about the sliding paper doors, so to me it just looked the paper walls. So I had no idea what to do to get the game to start. I had to return the game before even getting out of the house. A year later I rented it again and discovered the door. The game was pretty kick-ass.

In my mind, Cotton lying to Bobby makes decent sense. We have established that Cotton is fairly old fashioned and coming from the Boomer generation, admitting you killed a Japanese woman's husband for decades would be a much easier and accepted explanation in Texas than sleeping with her or loving her. When you consider the multiple forms of shame he probably feels associated with this situation, lying about it is probably just second nature. This would especially be the case with Bobby. In Cottons mind and raising, he did something horrible and the last thing Cotton would want is Bobby to be disappointed or ashamed of him

Always thought it was weird that Hank takes after his mother more in the looks department yet his Japanese half brother looks exactly like him.
-Since it's Cotton who says that, I have always assumed he's just got a thing for downplaying how his sons get there builds and looks from him, positive and negative. With Hank, he doesn't like how Hank is, so he blames it on "He gets that from his mother", and he -_-likes-_- Junichiro and Michiko, so he attributes the positives he sees to them instead of himself.-
-The only one he doesn't say it about is G.H. but he's just a baby, though Cotton does mention what he thinks is behavior that he is proud comes from him, so there's that.-

Finally, that's the first time I've seen someone else mention that. I loved this saga, but that always bothered me in the back of my mind the whole time

@@jacobpeterson4071 Logos, ethos, and pathos are three contrasting modes of appeal. Logos is appeal to logic, that which must be, according to reason. Ethos is appeal to ethics, that which ought to be, by shared understanding. Pathos is appeal to emotion, that which feels right. Junichiro is a logos guy and Hank is an ethos guy.

@@matthewgallaway3675 propane is clean burning and more efficient than gasoline or diesel but the motor(s) would have to be fitted to handle the heat and pressure. The tanks would have to be rather large so a 100 gallon tank would be a good choice and those aren't small as a standard propane tank for a grill is about 20 lbs.

The only thing that really saddened me about king of the hill was Bobby and Connie not going back to dating. In my opinion they were a good couple, he helped her have fun and she helped him learn. The gout episode really shows this off.
I honestly think that Hills should have just lived permanently in Japan, and Bobby starting a family with the Japanese girl he met through playing DDR, and out of any character in the series she’s the only person in that whole series that has the most romantic chemistry with Bobby.

Bobby played a game with her and she kissed him, they can not speak to one another, Hanks to set in his ways to live outside his state let alone country, now had King of the Hill aired a few years later, a long distance realtionship would of been great with Bobby having a cell phone. So many episode possibilities, like what if a girl starts to like Bobby in Texas does he go for what's closer or stay true to the connection he had in Japan.
There was an episode focused on Bobby and Connie's relationship. However, they found that they were incompatible with one another and decided to remain friends.
@@irvinmorales1409 Pretty sure that was when they broke up. There were a couple episodes afterwards that hinted that they still had feelings for each other, but then the storyline was just dropped and Connie started appearing a lot less.
@@irvinmorales1409 only because it was written that way, which contradicts the clear and obvious compatibility they had together in previous episodes. They have always had similar interests, and even compatible personalities. The only difference is Connie's preference for studying, but she still has interests and hobbies outside of that which are consistent with Bobby's. The writers basically just decided they didn't want Bobby and Connie together anymore.
I always read it as Dale was being insanely sarcastic towards Bill with his “you look great” comments and it’s so so funny. Also, Bill’s cry through the door “WE’RE DOING IT”- funniest part of the episode for me.
I think, even with some backsliding on his character development, Cotton has a really excellent character arc over the entirety of the series, with his tragedy in how every time you see him, there are fewer and fewer of his war buddies until he's finally the last to go.
Also, well played on that joke at the start.
I've always wondered if perhaps it was the deaths of his war buddies that led to the backsliding in Cotton's character development. Cotton was warming up to Hank and even to Peggy up until Topsy's death, and then he gradually becomes meaner and more sadistic than ever, pushing away all his loved ones except Bobby.

@@rayvenkman2087 the people over there are really nice. I always got a kick out of walking into a music store and them being able to recognize the music I was playing. I also miss the Cherry Blossoms when they were in bloom. Beautiful country.
My family lived on an Air Base in the Fussa area. It has become a bit of a goal to return someday for a visit.
As I said with Bobby, there were times when I'd be off base and have local girls smiling at me. If I hadn't been so shy at the time, I would have struck up a conversation.

I really want to go to vacation in Japan an South Korea, although I heard from a British guy, him an his girlfriend who is Indian an she grew up in Singapore got nasty stares, comments from Asian women jealous an kept flirting with her boyfriend. Agreed! Speaking as an American citizen, ethnically born half-Japanese half-white, born in Tokyo, and visited Japan time to time (except during these COVID times), the girls in Japan are actually nicer than in Western society.

It gets hazy after around 30. Mostly because I was drunk. Remember their names? Hell no! I only remember the names of the ones I loved.

Casual, informal introductions do happen there (especially among young people), but when you're a professional with a busy schedule, you don't want to be bothered by a random stranger unless they're at least going to introduce themselves and explain what they want. At the same time, Hank is obviously a tourist, and many people in a city would recognize this in his peculiarities and perhaps offer some help if they had the time.

Also maybe it was more accurate for the early 2000s to exchange business cards with strangers. I live in Japan and business cards are still a thing but not in the way it was portrayed here, I only receive them occasionally when I might be working with someone or seeing them again but not everyone has one for themselves.
My favorite Cotton Hill move was in the episode where he tries to dupe Hank into taking him and his war buddies to finish off Castro. Theyre on a dock and Hank has jumped in the boat in front of them. Cotton approaches Hank calmly then abruptly in mid sentence says, " - sucker punch" and swings on Hank.
Its my favorite King of the Hill moment of all time actually.
I like how king of the hill doesn't exaggerate its racial humor. It's usually complete ignorance on the part of one party (the hills not knowing anything about Japanese people) or its just cold accuracy (redcorn).
And even with John Redcorn, it's pretty clear he's exploiting stereotypes for seduction/business purposes.

My Drafting teacher who was Japanese and also an electrical engineer/Architect would always joke that because "we" use 90% "we" put in an extra 10% because it takes 110% to build a freaking Gundam. Fyi, they did build a Gundam I'm still excited about.

…But Cotton's been caught "exaggerating" about his military career many times.

One of the best episodes on the show. Junichiro seemed to not only be resentful at Cotton as he was with Hank. It should have been written to where both could have explained their upbringing. While Junichiro felt that Hank was the "wanted" child, Hank could have explained that this wasn't the case. He could have said how Cotton wasn't really there for him either and how Hank looked at his boss as a father figure. Junichiro could mention that he had a similar experience with his factory boss and how both men wanted to be better men than their father. Junichiro saying "I no longer have ill feelings towards the Hill name, I'm proud of it cause of Hank" was one of the most powerful lines on the show. Both men effectively acted like adults in the situation that were amazing men born out of dysfunction.

Honestly I know it’s not on topic but Hanks little brother is one of the saddest things to me, hank will never be there in his life due to the huge age gap and the fact that he’s even taken away from hank a life after his dad passes. I feel like he knows that and that’s why he was so excited to have another brother around his age

Growing up in the early 2000s watching king of the hill on adult swim was like my sneak into adult animated shows because it the was the only one my mother would let me watch I’ve rewatched it probably 50 times since being able to make “grown” decisions now still love the show and Dale will always be my favorite character
This is in my top 5 of favorite King of the Hill episodes, I really enjoyed seeing Cotton actually have emotions and not just being a dick, I loved meeting Hanks japanese brother, and I really really loved the new setting, most stories take place in Texas so it was nice to see the Hill family go all the way to Japan
also that slavery joke really caught me off guard, but holy shit the "most of ya'll picked cotton' punchline had me laughing pretty goddamn hard hahahaha
The plot hole that strikes me is Hank looks like his MOTHER, not Cotton. So it is awkward to have Junichiro look so much like Hank. Granted, this was probably done to simply introduce the half-brother aspect as a sudden surprise instead of working its way in through another route; but it might have been an opportunity for the two brothers to come together despite their differences if they weren’t already so physically similar.
-Cotton is the one who said that, so I assumed even before this episode that he was just not acknowledging the part he played in how his sons look.-
Never mind me, someone pointed out the actual resemblance Hank has to his mother, and I see it now where before I missed it.
Loved this episode especially seeing how they play on the idea of Japan like with Peggy thinking she knows anything like the cramped rooms as japana does habw things like pod motels which is a thing but not in the way she thought
Same with hank having a brother before too hank who is a baby and didn't do much. Overall cotton is a good character to see experience his PTSD
i laughed when you got to Dale's hallucination and brought up Nancy because it's pretty accurate when you take into account that praying mantis's eat their mates.

King of the Hill is by far and yonder my favorite animated show. I just really wish they had come back to Junichiro and G.H. before the show ended.
I have to say these were some of my favorite episodes growing up. I remember always liking the interactions between Hank and Junichiro, as well as rooting for Bobby because I identified with him down to his taste in girls. Along with Cotton having a two part episode and being my favorite character these were perfect episodes to me.
God king of the hill is such a good show, love your breakdowns. Hank reminds me so much of my own dad the show has always been more comedically relevant than almost any other show.

I love this two part episode, one of the reason it shows the human side of Cotton he suppressed. it shows not only he’s haunted by what he saw and did in the Pacific theatre of the war, it shows he does have genuine love for this women in Japan 🇯🇵 probably the only women he Actually loved. And he uses he’s attitude to suppress his emotional side even lvoe so he doesn’t have to feel the guilt and fear form his PTSD.
