It’s so funny to me how Michael just has a complete knack for sales and is actually pretty socially savvy in sales situations, but loses all social intelligence in every other situation lol
I think it's part of same personality. Because he is able to make unorthodox conversations, he is making a memorable impact on others and he is able to emotionally connect with them. He is easy going while expressing things that he is thinking. Not everyone can do that. So because of that he has an edge over others in sales.
Ricky Gervais told them that they had to make Michael's character somewhat competent at his job so they don't get rid of him. I think it made the show better because of it.
I feel that Michael's sales style thrives in a local "boys club" small town type of setting and that's why he's successful in Scranton but wasn't REALLY being considered for the branch merger or the corporate job as it was later revealed.
I don't know much about acting, but in my mind, if an actor is really into their role, they end up knowing their respective character better than the writers themselves. Once they do, they can interact with others in the most natural way and the other actors involved will not be too surprised and should be able to respond naturally and in-character too. The fact the actors of this series all seem to be so into their roles definitely proves both of your points 🙂
I think they are asking how they managed to get through it eventually, not as if this was the first take. Even with blooper reels you have to get the take that goes into the show, he's just surprised given the scene how they were able to get clean takes eventually
