I don't know whether there's any truth to that assessment, but from the perspective of a lottery organiser, it makes sense. Thing about Khan that I noticed is that he gets hyper focused on one thing. And going to stretch this but this could be a mid life crisis episode. It's why the quick rich scheme and the cut corners like getting a lottery ticket. He wants a life style that he thinks he deserves and once he gets a taste he doesn't want to listen to anyone with sound advice til it bites him. Also like this episode because its one of the few times we get to see Strickland standing up for Hank and gives the lesson. It homes when Hank quit. And actually sold the shares and give what Hank wants to have him come back. I actually liked that. Show how he value Hank
Would have been both poetic justice and heartfelt if he had just gifted the shares to Hank instead of selling them. Then Hank would be the one lording over Khan.
I’d love to see other episodes where you disagree with Hank. The later episodes had a problem where they would prematurely decide Hank was right about anything: he tells Bobby to fight fair, even if the bullies won’t do the same, he thinks Bobby shouldn’t do the shadowing business, etc. The show works better when Hank is being challenged.
I'm not gonna lie, hank in the later seasons in the series will always be right about everything and be many be the voice of reason. But in the earlier seasons, hank can be right about things most of the time but the difference is hank would learn a lesson from that episode. (BTW: HI kitty monk huge fan of yours love your work) 😁

You know, if you combine this episode with the one where Peggy, Minh and Dale use Bill to figure out what the average American buys so they know which stock to purchase, AND if you had Kahn and Minh actually be smart, then they'd be pretty set with three incomes: a regular 9-to-5 job, a turnkey business and a respectable share of stocks.
But isn't it mentioned somewhere that Dale's business is uninsured and unlicensed? And he's the only employee and doesn't make a livable wage? I don't know if I'd call that successful. It feels more like an under the table job because, of course, Dale would go for something off the books.
In the episode "Just Another Manic Kahn-Day" we learned Khan is on some sort of medication for mental issues, this could be used to explain a lot of things he may be doing that could be considered "out of character".
Valuable Work is the key to success. Working smart is required to make use of that key. Working hard is required to actually be able to make use of that key. People regularly act like it's only one thing you need, when you need a combo of things to achieve anything.
That's what I really like about Strickland: Yes, he can be a little loose with his money and he sometimes dumps some of his unwanted work on his employees. But he also knows not to stiff his customers and he doesn't take Hank for granted because he's his most valuable worker. I especially like how he says, "Hank is the golden goose." And I love how he hands his ownership over to the other guy. Doesn't even sell it, just gives it away like it's a hotel towel😆

Hey, lifelong motorhead here. And to answer your question, yes, we DO have weekly car meets. No, they aren't automatically held at carwashes, that was just the venue on the show. They are held at many different locations. The ones in my city are on Sunday mornings in front of a high-end restaurant before it opens, on Saturday nights in front of a tire shop after it closes, and on Thursdays in a shopping plaza among a Starbucks, dollar general, and Five guys.
I’ve always loved this saying from the boxing anime Hajime No Ippo about hard work. “Not everyone who works hard succeeds but everyone who succeeded worked hard”
What keeps me coming back to Shady’s videos is that he’s earnest with his emotions and honest with what he thinks; his overall calm demeanor is also a boon.
Also how did Strickland sell his shares so quickly? I'm pretty sure you can't just give our shares away, let alone sell them through a verbal agreement. There's a whole legal process for the transaction to go through.
@barbiquearea But wait, isn't Buck known for being pretty shady and greedy? Pretty sure he wouldn't be one to care much about the legality of some situations.
My last job should take note of the golden goose idea. So many bad business practices that caused almost all of the veterans of the company to leave. Hell, I was one of the longest employees there when I walked out slightly short of 4 years there. One supervisor at my current job walked out from the other one after 15 years. Most of these people could do almost every job at the place too, but I could also run the recycling part of the factory that almost made up the loss of every other cell. My best four days I made enough to pay my wage with benefits for a year. My new job is awesome. I'm putting in about a fourth of the energy and producing more, everyone gets along, HR stops drama immediately, they ask us what we need to be more successful in our work, they won't make us work more than 60 hours which could be a positive or negative depending on how you look at it. Worse case I was getting over 100 hours a week at my last one and could handle it, but I'm enjoying more hourly wages and more time off.
Been watching more of your content aside from King of the Hill and honestly I hope more people will give the rest of your content a try; it’s all consistent and entertaining
As someone FROM one of these areas... they don't usually WASH the cars in unison, but they often get antique, rare, weird, and expensive cars together in one place so everyone can look at them. It's like a tiny festival. The owners love to show off and see what their peers have and the common people just enjoy gawking. A good time is had by all.
As I'm growing older and wiser, I find myself wanting to own a business. KotH has made me feel like I've been taught a lot on what can make a business successful.
With that part about treating employees well, I think it's also worth mentioning the other reason as to why. While there's the fact that yeah, if you treat them well they'll stick around, another important fact is that employee relations can impact your business even more than customer relations. You have to be very careful with how you treat your employees, because word spreads fast if you so much as think about being rude to one. I had a boss once who had a reputation for losing his cool with employees and yelling at them. Something which he did in the first month he owned the place. Despite it only being a month, and him drastically backpedaling those actions, he struggled to find any new staff to work for him for the next two years.
Hey @Shady Doorags ! Show-trucker (and D&D player lol) here, yes groups do get together to wash their cars, ours in particular will meet up at a car wash before a show and get some last minute cleaning in before heading out, so yeah, it's a real thing!
It's great to see someone my age defend capitalism so well. I seen bad bosses and mployees get written off as a victim of "the capitalist machine" instead of being awful people
15:11 I am not gonna lie but that was my favorite moment of this episode because Buck understands that you can’t treat customers wrongly and you sure as hell could never treat your employees your hard-working employees like garbage.
At what point did he defend capitalism? He just explained how it worked. Ive never in my life seen someone defend a bad boss as a victim of capitalism.
@TheCompleteMental If you don't know, he made another KOTH video about the episode where Bobby gets a job at a race track, and he goes into some basic details about how capitalism works there.
@@TheCompleteMental Kind of a mix of both. He gives a very basic description of how it works and how the pros/cons of the system can go both ways. He specifically uses an example of a person turning a piece of land into a chicken farm (sounds kind of silly, but bear with me) and the owner decides each chicken is worth $30 dollars. In a capitalistic situation, as he states, the owner is allowed to do this, but capitalism also allows the potential buyers to accept or reject this offer. In the case of Hank in this episode, capitalism basically allows Buck to do what he did with Hank, but Hank is allowed to decide the value of his labor. And Hank decides his labor is worth more than what Kahn and Bucky were offering. I'm not at all an expert, I'm just going off of what Shady was discussing, but this basically sums up his feelings regarding the matter.
This is yet another one of my favorite Kahn episodes! i mean i know it's just another chapter in his never ending quest to becoming more successful than those he looks down on and etc, and he may have acted like a total jerk especially to Hank but the episode has it's share of moments that made me laugh. Although i will admit that one of the only things about this episode that bugged me was that Kahn got the dumb idea to buy out the carwash because of those dumb "how to get rich quick" videos, i can't believe anyone would actually listen to and or believe in any of the nonesense that they say in those videos.
4:36 Hank says they are going to the carwash for "cruise night" aka a "cruise in". It's a gathering of people who own classic cars to show them off, not to wash them. They are often held at car related businesses as a way to advertise.
Cruise nights often take place at burger joints as well. There is an independent shop in a nearby town that has a cruise night every week. It's a great place to see some classic cars and discuss car stuff with gearheads.
Your video essays are a thing of beauty. Your knowledge on these subjects really shines through and you have a great vocabulary and points to make. Another banger
Are you gonna cover the Thanksgiving episode where Peggy steals the turkey? I think that episode could’ve worked if they focused more on Hank’s belief that if Bobby takes home ec, he wouldn’t wanna get married.
Yeah that's another good episode that shows Peggy being more in the wrong. It also shows Hank being more open minded. He starts out being against Bobby doing Home ec, but then realizes how good Bobby gets and even encourages him to keep doing it.
Here in Missouri we have this thing where we get to see the hottest hot rods on a monthly and yearly basis. It's a part of our route 66 celebrations in keeping the traditions alive. It's also an open opportunity for people to show off their best rides, not to mention for some people to sell their vehicles and to create connections and business deals with others.
I mean, if doing evil and reckles things often then that is not really out of character, right? This was a good episode and I love to see Hank actually standing his ground against an unfair situation.
From what I've seen of his content so far, Shady has a bit too strong/strict an expectation of consistency and realism in fictional shows. Not to say he doesn't make good points, but some of the moments I disagree with him have been when he seems to just assume something _has_ to have a straightforward and clear conclusion (and I mean something that is up to his standard of it, or is in your face explicit in what it is doing) or _has_ to have some sort of development or change, when that isn't always necessary to a show and can sometimes work against it. It is nice to see Hank stand up for himself. I almost get the sense he fully expected Buck to back him up, since the way he says "If you say so sir" makes me feel like he was saying "Ball's in your court sir, what are you going to do about it?", and he was just quitting the car wash as a message to Buck.
@@balanc-joy9187 I disagree, his expectations are not a problem. Even if I disagree with him some times I don't think there is anything wrong with his reasoning.
I wish B&B had more of a bandwagon on YT outside of clips. I would love somebody to talk about the theory that Beavis would be better off without Butt-Head.
Beavis and Butthead are more solely comedy based, there's not really any moral lessons to be learned from watching them. So I doubt Shady will do any videos on that
Loved the video, would be cool to see you discuss the episode "Won't you be my Pimai Neighbor?" since it's one of my favorites. Nothing too deep there but it's a great episode and would make for an easy positive video if you need something to fill time.
You could also do the episode where Bobby shadows Buck. But I’d love to see you do the one where Luanne worked on a golf course and was harassed by the customers for the discussion on how professional misconduct is handled and the Margaret Lovatt jokes.
the carwash thing, from the looks of it you had people washing their cars before going "cruising", which I can say in very small towns and cities there are places where cruising is something people did on the weekends. You would literally pile into a friends car to cruise up and down the main street trying to hook up. I went cruising quite a few times in High School.
First bit of advice my dad told me when it comes to quiting(?) was "there comes a time when we have to ask ourselves if this job/sport/hobby/ect is worth staying in. If you've given all you can and you still want to quit? Then OK."
Damn man i gotta love the Rugrats reference in the beginning! I know its annoying to get told what you should do next, but you must’ve watched Rocket Power and that show deserves some attention. Same artist as Rugrats and Wild Thornberries too
I think Khan's erratic behavior would later make sense as a symptom of his manic depression that we see way later at the end of the series. Sure he's medicated which keeps him balanced, but i wouldn't be surprised if it causes some levels of impulsivity and manic recklessness.
Misread the title as "Kahn's Turkey Business", and I went and got excited thinking there was an episode I somehow missed or maybe they are moving forward with the reboot. >.
No cruise night is not usually about washing cars together, the car wash in this case is a venue, cruise nights are a way to show off and talk about vehicles, mostly sports cars, muscle cars or show cars, other venues for this usually are, parks, malls, speedway, and fairgrounds
1:00 hi I just wamt to point out something that happens in a later season. As you said, most of the time. Khan is a normal man with his own faults, but sometimes his "Khaness" gets turned up to 11. It may be because of "Flanderization" by the writers. But, in a later episode it's revealed that Khan suffers from Manic Depression, more commonly know as a bipolar disorder. So this story could easily fit into the idea that he is having a minor manic episode and that is why he is acting so recklessly in trying to "get rick quick"

As a man from the south. Yes, weekly car shows ae a thing AND a tradition. They don't exactly wash them, it's most likely the location it's held. And as a DnD player it is just as exciting.
They are also common in California, my local burger shop even had car show like every other week.
In New York I've seen some in my area

Seeing Khan as a “good” character is some of my favorite stuff in this show. When he works with Hank and shows respect for Hank or Hank’s opinions is always great to see. When that reverts back to things like this, it’s sad.
It still fits for Khan because besides him being manic depressive he at his core is an insufferable douchebag.
12:30 for Mihn her childhood would explain her tendency to rather quickly fall into casual cruelty. We know her father was a general who worked for the Laos dictatorship and would later become a powerful corporate axe-man, so she's very much used to living a life of luxury with the cost of those around her suffering.

Well shady, in your question to cars...YES
3 years ago a gas station near my town installed a self service car washing machine, and not only it's always full, but during summer, you see tourists sharing hotdogs and cafes while they wash their cars (or wait their turns) while also talking about businesses and shit
Sounds like a good opportunity to hang out. No matter what, if it's a simple act with a decent atmosphere, people will find a way to hang out while doing it. Hell, even some truckers "hang out" over the radio while they drive.
@@329link yeah exactly. It's not about washing cars, it's about car guys hanging out talking about and appreciating each other's cars
More than likely the gas station is also selling the food.
Beyond Khan loving the idea of "getting rich quick", which explains why he plays the lottery. He specifically mentions buying them in the poor part of town because sketchy gas stations always seem to have winning tickets.
According to lottery winner stories....yeah that is recurrent for some reason
I don't know whether there's any truth to that assessment, but from the perspective of a lottery organiser, it makes sense. Dirt poor hopeless people are by far the biggest consumers of lottery tickets; if you arrange for the winner to be one of them, it helps entertain the illusion that they can win, thus keeping the masses coming back to the scam.
@@maximsavagepurely from a statistical standpoint, since they are the biggest consumers, as a demographic they are the most likely to have winners over a long period of time compared to say middle class guys playing for funsies
Honestly love seeing how Khan and Hank mirror one another where Khan is constantly going through different jobs yet sees himself as the successful one while Hank works useally at Strickland but is happy and stable.
It's also probably indirectly why Khan is so hard on Khan Jr to make sure she lives up to the standards she "has to" live up to thanks to where race. Really hope the revival series can go more into this same as Hank and bobby getting better at understanding one another like to surlone with love

I don't know if anybody noticed, but Shady made his own turn of phrase: "You're going to *drive* people away" while the discussion is at a car wash.
I guess the episode where he has manic depressive disorder, might also explain his one track mind obsessiveness.
Hank's the kind of guy that'd be great with people, like P.R or customer service while someone else handles the business side
You know that Kahn is a bad business owner when Dale's Dead Bug is the more successful business.
But isn't it mentioned somewhere that Dale's business is uninsured and unlicensed? And he's the only employee and doesn't make a livable wage? I don't know if I'd call that successful. It feels more like an under the table job because, of course, Dale would go for something off the books.
In the episode "Just Another Manic Kahn-Day" we learned Khan is on some sort of medication for mental issues, this could be used to explain a lot of things he may be doing that could be considered "out of character".
good. i was having such a shit day and Shady comes through with a new video to help pick me up a bit. Thanks shady 👍
Valuable Work is the key to success.
Working smart is required to make use of that key.
Working hard is required to actually be able to make use of that key.
People regularly act like it's only one thing you need, when you need a combo of things to achieve anything.
Did you just call the souphanousinphones “soup and the microphones”?! 😂😂😂
Doesn't even sell it, just gives it away like it's a hotel towel😆
the three cornerstones of business are customer relations, excellent service, and patience. trees do not grow overnight, it takes time to begin reaping the fruit of your labor.
"Is it too much to ask that when I walk by 'look at that lucky bastard, I hate him'"
This says so much about Khan's character
Me who would have fun with a weekly car wash OR D&D game: Shady, you didn't!
I’ve always loved this saying from the boxing anime Hajime No Ippo about hard work. “Not everyone who works hard succeeds but everyone who succeeded worked hard”
So that's where that quote comes from😮.
What keeps me coming back to Shady’s videos is that he’s earnest with his emotions and honest with what he thinks; his overall calm demeanor is also a boon.
Lol pretty sure being majority owner doesn't allow you to abuse your co-owner. But it was pretty funny seeing Kahn's comeuppance.
Also how did Strickland sell his shares so quickly? I'm pretty sure you can't just give our shares away, let alone sell them through a verbal agreement. There's a whole legal process for the transaction to go through.
@barbiquearea
But wait, isn't Buck known for being pretty shady and greedy?
There’s the episode that establishes kahn’s manic depression which partially explains his drastic changes in character at times.
@TheCompleteMental
If you don't know, he made another KOTH video about the episode where Bobby gets a job at a race track, and he goes into some basic details about how capitalism works there.
@@frankielovejoy9928 how it works, or defending it from criticism?

I just came from watching a video of yours. Awesome
I stumbled across your channel and gotta say. Loving it so far, especially the King of the Hill ones!
Shady waits for the day he's reviewed every episode of King of the Hill and can finally go on to other things.
I almost get the sense he fully expected Buck to back him up, since the way he says "If you say so sir" makes me feel like he was saying "Ball's in your court sir, what are you going to do about it?", and he was just quitting the car wash as a message to Buck.

the carwash thing, from the looks of it you had people washing their cars before going "cruising", which I can say in very small towns and cities there are places where cruising is something people did on the weekends. I think Khan's erratic behavior would later make sense as a symptom of his manic depression that we see way later at the end of the series. Sure he's medicated which keeps him balanced, but i wouldn't be surprised if it causes some levels of impulsivity and manic recklessness.

@@giancarlocaballero7684 doesn't matter if one becomes corrupt from capital or worker exploitation, the point of capitalism is having the freedom to do what do you want with the assets and resources you have.
