Alternative Intersections: Median U-Turns

- The Median U-Turn (MUT) intersection is an innovative, proven solution for improving safety and mobility at intersections. At a MUT intersection, direct left turns are replaced with a downstream U-turn followed by a right-turn.
Feeled honored, intersection is right in front of my house at MSU and we made the cut for the video.
We all ready have those in Tampa. Still accidents and massive congestion.
The entire state of Florida is one of the worst places to drive.
AKA "Michigan left turn." We have had them for many years. They're OK for cars, not so great for bikes IMO.
Yeah they do mention it as also being called Michigan left in the video.
@@joshuacornell6667 Michigan left.. in this video. This very one. Here. Lol
I like how y'all blurred out the Coca Cola logo only on the sides of the trailer, not on the front. LOL
Got interested in the comments. Putting a roundabout on a major arterial road will just make a screwed up traffic mess. 3 lane roundabout should only be used as gimmicks. It's best to use the newer options to better intersections but it also helps to sign the intersection well for best results.
NC here. When making a left uturn, which lane do I turn into? The right or keep left? I'd be keeping straight and eventually turning left shortly. I'm finding conflicting answers.
Better to use a Z-stop for some of the lefts and do a RCUT
Forces bicyclists to take a huge detour to get across the main roadway.
I wouldn’t go anywhere near these intersections on a bike lol
5:48 cars waiting to make a U-turn onto a busy road.
At 5:46 I saw quite a few people waiting in a U-turn for a chance to pull out.
TWSS.
A median left turn underpass
It's odd that the description is inaccurate. To complete the Left Turn, you must pass through the intersection, Signal a Left turn, Make a U-Turn, then signal Right and Change Lanes multiple times to get into the Right Turning Lane to Turn Right. There is added complexity that the description leaves out.
There is no need to change the lanes as you can and actually in most cases should turn into the correct lane straight away
Here is a crazy idea. I roundabout!
Roundabouts doesn't solve all the problems necessarily. Queues may still appear on a roundabout. Also an intersection like the Median U-turn is better when you have a narrow space.
@@moramento22 cloverleaf
You’ll never get to fucking go if traffic is crazy in a roundabout
@@E095660 That's even fucking worse than a roundabout. Those are massive.
Or you can put a freaking ROUNDABOUT!
It is essentially an elongated roundabout
I thought the u-turn would be as close to the intersection as possible. But now, you have to almost detour a road.
If the u-turn is too close to the intersection, cars waiting for the u-turn might form a queue blocking the intersection itself.
Monroe NC here. These suck! Nobody understands how to use them correctly (human laziness) and there have been more accidents since it went in than when there was an actual stop light. Not to mention the traffic they have caused. Lot of taxpayer money spent for nothing.
Whoever can’t do this has a -30 IQ .. uh durrrrr
Why not just build a roundabout?
Dangerous Facts Because roundabouts are completely unsuitable for high traffic demands as this. They only work with relatively low traffic demands.
Dangerous Facts it takes up too much space
Dangerous Facts good idea it is used to accommodate large vehicles.
At such capacities a standard roundabout is unsuitable. A 3 lane turbo roundabout might be suitable, but they are unsuitable for pedestrians and cyclists so you need grade separation.
@@ferrytale3709 bull!! I have seen them in multiple countries with 7-8 lanes of traffic with as many as 12 roads at the intersection.
I think roundabouts better than the median u turn !!😇
They have a low capacity and require more space in many cases, seeing that most roads are used by semi traffic, that is tractor-trailers which require more room to turn left and especially right.
Not if there is non stop traffic.. you’ll never move in a roundabout. Dur
This is the WORSE idea that has ever come along. We have seen these in other areas, and the ONLY way they could possibly save a collision is that they are so bad that you have to really look hard to not cause one. Then others have you going on the wrong side to turn, absolutely awful!!!! What could they possilbly be thinking. Terrible idea!!
Have you ever driven on one of these intersections? They really aren't that bad
@@MrC0MPUT3R Yes I have. I drive miles around to avoid them. I do not want to be involved in an accident because of them. I stand by my comment a year ago. I just go through them now, If I can avoid them at all.
I think the entire state of Michigan would like to disagree with you
Your not stopping a left turn, your just adding a right turn to it. Bored engineers of the world, put your framed degree down and realize even if you had an unlimited budget, and could make every intersection in the US a freeway style exchange, where noone had to stop, or move perpendicular to traffic flow, one fact will always remain. People are friggin stupid.
The argument has nothing to do with stupidity, but rather how much time it takes to get through an intersection. Unless, of course, you consider impatience to be stupidity, in which case to each his own accord.
Because you as a layman clearly know what you're talking about, but those trained engineers have no idea what they're talking about.
The amount of motorcycle deaths and serious injuries come from left turns, not right. This would eliminate a huge majority of accidents; It’s not more efficient but it is safer
What the fuck is this shit?! 0:33
This is called a Diverging Diamond Interchange. You can find RUclips videos on them.
1:15 - I'm calling BS. They put a couple of Michigan Lefts near where I live, and traffic accidents are WAY up at those intersections!
Because people don't know how to drive and aren't used to them. I live in Michigan, and make multiple Michigan lefts a day, and I have never seen an accident at a Michigan left.
@@warriyorcat You have WAY more points of contention at a Michigan Left! You've got two lanes to cross VERY quickly in a short amount of time (less than 1/4 mile!) just to get to the U-turn lane, then there's actually making the U-turn, both with MAJOR problems of visibility!
This isn't "people don't know how to use them. POINTS OF CONTENTION. LINE OF SIGHT. These are MAJOR PROBLEMS that are NOT THE DRIVERS' FAULT!!!
STOP MAKING EXCUSES! The Michigan Left is CRAP!!!
@@shanedk that sucks for you, but the statistics and the entire state of Michigan disagrees with you. Michigan lefts are safer than standard lefts, and are often faster as well. Crossing two lanes, there is a gap in traffic and/or a dedicated lane for traffic making a left AND you're only looking left, and when you do finally turn left you only have to worry about traffic to your right, AND there will be a light or a gap in traffic if done correctly. They are incredibly easy to maneuver, so yes, it is a skill issue
@@warriyorcat How is it a skill issue when you CAN'T FUCKING SEE THE CARS??? If there's ANYONE in the right turn lane when you're trying to turn in, you can't see ANY traffic in the oncoming lanes!
Then you have to get all the way across the other two lanes, and THEN come back in at an angle, looking WAY over your left shoulder and try to merge in with no room to accelerate!
NO visibility, FIVE points of contention, and NO room to accelerate into traffic, how can that POSSIBLY be safer???
@@warriyorcat Compare that to a left turn. Just search for "Chuck's unprotected left," a VERY challenging one he's using to test Tesla's FSD, but how relatively straightforward it is: Easily look for two lanes to be clear, get into the median, then wait for one lane to be clear and merge in. Better visibility, with fewer points of contention. As challenging as it is, it's still MUCH better than having to navigate a Michigan Left!
Actually, I think there are three lanes with the highway he uses, which means with a Michigan left at that point it would be SEVEN points of contention!
Why not leave things the way they have always worked ? Add more lanes when traffic increases... They want to avoid putting in more lanes for the increased traffic which is what they really should do. They are bent on CONTROLLING our driving rather than accommodating us as drivers and constituents. They want to go for the "new" "Innovative" thing rather than tried and true methods of working for their constituents.
These U-turns are more efficient because light timing is easier to achieve and traffic flows much easier instead of having to wait through two or three light cycles to turn left..
"They are bent on CONTROLLING our driving rather than accommodating us as drivers and constituents." Calm down there Alex Jones. More lanes isn't always feasible and doesn't solve the problem of left turn traffic that Michigan lefts try to fix.
Okay, now take off the tin-foil hat.
You need to look up "induced demand"
