He's singing in the first person as satan and when satan chooses to take human form he does so by inhabiting the body of a wealthy elite or other power person. And the influence that these wealthy elite have on us can direct us to do horrible things.
Yep. the book is a great read and offers some insight into the madness of the USSR in the time of Stalin's Purges. It is both darkly satirical and lightly funny at once. Well worth a read. but not a book for a weekend unless you have a grasp on Soviet society, culture and politics in 1920's and 30's Russia. Now there's a rabbit hole for you to explore!!!

Pretty good. Just one correction. It wasn’t so much that the devil tempted Jesus. In the lyrics it mentions “made sure that Pontius Pilate (governor of Judea) washed his hands and sealed his (Jesus) fate. After Jesus was bought to Pilate to see what to do with him because he was brought there by the Roman soldiers he (Pilate) actually could not find fault with Jesus so he was gonna let him go. But the mob and the Pharisees (religious leaders ) wanted Jesus put to death. Pilate felt that if he didn’t do it he would lose his governorship. It’s Biblical.

But it did not kill them quick enough so they resorted back to using their pistols. The only survivor was Alexi's dog who was saved by a British officer who was with the relief forces.

Its amazing how many people do not know who the song is about. It's right in the title.
I understand it’s in the title but as I explained I learned to not assume right away what it was about Because Yes the title can bring some kind of similarity to the meaning but there’s always something more to it so I don’t just jump off of what the title says I try to listen just to be sure it’s not another side to with they saying. For example yes the story is tying into the devil but it’s not primarily about the devil it’s about the person and their Darkside so yes it’s tied in But, was another piece of the story that I needed to hear
