Interesting fact about the lyrics. The one part that says, "I shouted out who killed the Kennedy's..." was first written to say, "I shouted out, who killed John Kennedy..." but during the production of the song, Robert Kennedy was assassinated, so they changed it. It was a heavy lyric to hear when it first came out, since Robert Kennedy's death was so recent.
The Stones’ wives and girlfriends were hanging out in the back room of the studio and were overheard improvising the “who-whos “. It sounded good so it was adapted for the final version.
While I am not a superfan of the Stones, this song is fucking amazing. They have a lot of other songs I like, but this one is just killer. Trip and a half. They stopped playing it live for many years after the Altamont stabbing in Dec 1969.

Unless you live under a rock you've heard the riff from Can't you hear me Knocking. You may not know where it came from but it's playing in the background of your favorite action movie.
Can't You Hear Me Knocking is so cool, because the extended 2nd half was unexpectedly recorded and kept, despite being adlibed spontaneously, and has a bit of a Santana flare to it.
Kathy Fasce It’s so awesome seeing a new generation find the classics and older generation music from the 70’s and 80’s. Video hasn't even started yet and I am saying, "YES YES YES!" ♥ You gotta watch some old footage of them live. Mick is something else! This song always reminds me of a frat party I went to in college. It was a toga hot tub party. They had a friggin awesome cover band. One of the tightest, most in-the-pocket guitar breaks ever! An excellent song with unforgiving lyrics! This song both played into and cemented the Stones' image as the dark side of the light/dark divide in music in the 60's. The Beatles were the light side, full of whimsy and charm, while the Stones were dark, violent, and "devilish". They played up their sexuality and willingness to experiment with darkness. "Gimme Shelter" was another song that went into that darkness, and then Altamont happened, the 60's crashed and burned, and the dream was over.

You should see the Altamont Festival. This is done live. Grace Slick had just done her set she and her band went away from the concert in a helicopter. She looked down on the festival goers and said that it looked like someone was being killed. In fact, there was someone being killed. This live version from 1970 marked the end of the era of "peace and love - the 60's. Some say that you can see the killing on the film. Bigger part was that Jagger was supposedly a witness from the stage. He denies to this day that he saw anything. IN some videos they stop and frame by frame go through this part
Aside the song title giving it away...throughout the duration the singer is giving clues through events in history for the listener to guess his name...which of course is the 👹 himself. Intense lyrics for sure !
The english/british answer to Rhythm and Soul. I have heard they will start their last tour. ;-) I was at their "last tour" in the early 90s - a millennium ago.
I came to this later myself, as the closing song to Interview with a Vampire, being too young to appreciate it '68 when it came out. I came to other Stones songs through their covers: Beast of Burden by Bette Midler and Wild Horses by Susan Boyle. It was like discovering Gangsta's Paradise was originally Pastime Paradise Stevie Wonder.
IMO, this is one of the greatest rock songs ever; top five. From the build up (Keith on bass guitar) to the piercing guitar solo to the Satanic lyrics throughout, it's a violent song.
So glad you're paying attention to the lyrics...especially on this one...
