The line at the end. . ."Tell you one time. . .YOU'RE to blame!!!" That's when the Devil says, hey people, don't blame the Devil for your evil deeds. . .YOU'RE TO BLAME. . .Blame yourself!!!!

Classic! It seems to me that Mick Jagger wrote the lyrics to push back against those who called him the devil back when. The song seems to admonish the listener against jumping to conclusions about those you might feel inclined to otherwise condemn -- "when after all it was you and me"... The 1968 documentary film "Sympathy for the Devil" directed by French director Jean-Luc Godard -- who recently passed away -- shows The Rolling Stones working out the song in the recording studio, right down to the "woo hoos" and Keith Richards' killer guitar solo -- arguably one of the most influential rock guitar solos ever recorded. Sympathy For The Devil was intended to be an analysis of the dark side of humanity; one which allows itself to be too easily swallowed up by the banality of evil, thereby helping it to accomplish the wickedness it craves . If you understand the Devil within yourself, maybe you can deal with him.
Begs the question "Is the devil evil or is he just the one hired to punish those that are evil?" Jane's Addiction does a great cover of this song. Peace/JT

The song very clearly does state that if you happen to meat him you should have some courtesy, some sympathy and some taste. It also continues to warn you to use all your well-learned politeness or he will lay your soul to waste, mm yeah. The song doesn't make the claim that there is no devil but rather for man to be honest about where they aim their blame for their own actions. Which brings us back to my original question. Is he evil or is he just the one that has the job of punishing us for our own evil ways? The song would clearly be answering with just a guy doing his job. Peace/ JT

Good job. You understood this better than anyone ive seen react to it. He gives quite a few hints, and even says "you're to blame" during the jamming at the end.
"...or I'll lay your soul to waste." "I tell you one time, you're to blame." A couple other great lines from the lyrics. A couple more suggestions for Rolling Stones songs: "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and "Time Waits for No One."

Another cool point about the lyrics is that at about every chance he gets, the singer points out it wasn't him, it was us. Yeah, he was there cheering us on, but... ...it was us... ...we can't blame the Devil, it's always us. He's just seducing us...

The " Devil" is a Metaphor for Humanity....I can't believe you got it right away. A lot of people actually think it's a song about "The Devl" It got them labeled as Devil worshippers lol.

Grim song, not because Lucifer is some grim character but because humanity, and humanity alone, is responsible for so much of the grimness.

Most wealth in this world is attached to religion, as is all of the most prized art in the world(taste).
The church promoted the War of Roses and the Century Long War(watched your kings and queens for ten decades).
Religion was used to oppress the people of Russia and led to the death of the Czar and his family.
The Kennedys were targeted by other christians(among other groups) because they were Catholic.
In short, the song is telling us that we are the ones perpetrating all of these evils, and he hopes we can recall that we provided the "names" under which we permit ourselves to do this evil. We don't do evil in the name of Lucifer, we do evil in the "Name of God".

This is a song of seduction. It's the Devil, it's about Evil, and the battle between Good and Evil. Satan is putting you on notice. He's reaching out to shake your hand. With drugs, with money, with lust. Wealth, allure, talent. It's said that the blues guitarist Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil one night at a crossroads Lucifer's asking you to shake his hand and make a very appealing deal with him. Again, he's so politely introducing himself BY NAME, And bragging about the violence he has inspired. In everyone from Generals, toreligious zealots, two kings and queens, to musicians. Being seduced and longing for the worldly, not glimpsing the Universal. We have Free Will. We have choice. But we can be tricked. We will find ourselves justifying our selfish acts that are really just self-destructive. Because all is ONE. Tempting impulses are acted upon throughout all of the Evil happenings of the world.
