I had a friend who got duped by a pyramid scheme, and he was so mad at me for not buying in, and for making fun of him. He would walk around as if he was already a billionaire and say "you are gonna be jealous when you see I made the next Amazon." Then he found out the "mentor" dude who got him into it was a convicted kiddie fiddler. And from then on pretended it never happened. Never brought his "business" up again.
