for egg moves just put an egg in the corner, for event put a confetti popper or something like that would be easy enough to differentiate. The upper right corner generally isn't used in any of your thumbs I could find and could easily fit a signifier in there.
He mentioned Bulk-Up as one of the better moves, but my heart goes out to Dragon Dance. Curse, Agility, Rest, Return would be very on-brand for Gen2, though, especially if you know you need to outspeed Blastoise and take down Snorlax quickly. And almost 50 minutes into the video later... yep, That Tracks!

What a glow-up right here. Dragonite went from being a decently good, but occasionally tricky pick, to a Top Tier performance. At this rate, the tier list may need another edit later this year given how things are starting to crowd a bit up top, lol.
I've been asking for the 18 way versus of Unowns for a long time, just earing you thinking about it made my day much better. Wish you give it a try, i think i could give a lot of interesting information about the usefulness of different Hidden Powers, and even information about how Shiny pokémon perform in gen 2.
So inspired by this, I decided to check whether there’s mechanical differences in the 26 Unown forms, to see if Scott would need to take any of that into account when running the 16 Hidden Powers. Turns out, the form is determined by DVs. “Oh cool” I thought, like a fool, “Each letter will correspond to a specific Hidden Power, giving an easy way to distinguish runs.” NOPE. The calculations are done oddly. Long story short, with optimal DVs, each type corresponds to one of 4 letters. Physical types are either R or T, Special are X or Z. Gamefreak WHY.
Hey Scott, I would love to see you do casual playthroughs. My initial thought was a livestream series of a casual playthrough of the new game you're going to start on December 25. Don't know how you feel about sort of bumping up the release of a new game before the 25th, but it might be nice to do it live so chat can help you learn the nuances of the new games and do R&D before you start recording a bunch if solo runs. I think it would also be a good way to showcase some different content during daily December, where there's already going to be tons of solo running content.
Always nice seeing the dapper gent Pryce get some real showtime! (The resets are a bummer, of course, but the rad attire from the HG/SS art makes up for it, haha)
I love the idea of doing special runs like the Egg moves in the first releases for the generations (Blue/Red, Gold/Silver, etc). I also like the evolution line you’re doing in FR and doing something for each game.
Scott, you can actually grab that item in union cave @6:14 from the ledge above, saves time if you use the ladder anyway, gen 1 & 2 have that feature in common btw.
With Unown, Hidden Power Dragon would be the way right? Nothing resists it. Psychic would be nice but then you're walled by dark types. I don't know much about the DVs needed though.
The improvement from the new strategy really impressed me! I know it's been a meme on the channel the past couple weeks, but I wonder if Surf could actually help defeat Pryce at a lower level since it can be deleted right after in this generation.
Part of my thinking was that this would unlock the Blackthorn Fly point before Radio Tower, but the move deleter is pretty far from the Ice Path exit. Might mean you could skip some of the out of the way candies and delay the one on Route 27, though I'd guess the time would be really close either way.
Icons you could use to show that you're doing a special run include (but are not limited to): Charish ball for event pokemon Egg icon for egg moves Linking cable for evolving a trade evolution mid run Actual link cable or trade icon (the one with two pokeballs) for tradebacks/trade only moved(unless the time capsule has an icon) Another option for event icons is move specific. Like, Onix has a picture of Porygon for the sharpen run. More work, but it'll look cool. Also, about the egg moves, I am pretty sure there is a limitation in gen 2 where they can only receive one egg move. Citation needed, but you're also more familiar with the code than I am.
I think blackout training might be useful against certain wall opponents, in this case Bryce. Especially with slow evolution pokemon, considering good trainer experience is at a premium. Thoughts?
You lose friendship so returns power goes down as the Pokémon faints. That might be useful for a first-stage mon where the run is going to be like 2 hours anyway. Then the faster exp might be the thing that makes the difference. With Dragonite I think finding a way around him like this (5 candies) is far preferable.
I get your point about learning to play music but there is a limit. I played viola all through school and bass guitar later on (what can I say, I like a counter melody and I only ever learned to read bass cleft), but my hands just don’t listen to me very well, sensory/motor planning disability. That’s one of the reasons I like turn based RPGs, my crappy thumb skills don’t matter that much.
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon what are your thoughts about adding a "rule" where you essentially roll a d8 to determine the sex of your starter, where applicable naturally? If you roll an 8, you get female. All other results give you a male.

I found the tier list comparison interesting. While this was a really good run, my eyes were telling me I was watching something like a 45 minute run in yellow. Maybe I’d feel differently if I had experience running gen2. As a sidebar, I think we’re due for a tier list shift in gen2 soon, and one (final?) tier list shift in gen1 by next year. Good idea. Iron Tail has the damage, so a 75% chance to KO the Piloswine at 33. Knowing you can just use 5 candies and OHKO with Fire Punch is more consistent though.
Man heart breaking getting all those resets at the end here. Def feels like Dragonite can push further into the S tier for sure. I mean without the resets on track for what a 1:11:00ish finish. Maybe one more really good behind the scene attempt?
A while ago I commented about surf being the move people just naturally go to cause of multiple factors but at 21:40 when mentioning about surf, probably in a first playthrough I would use surf on dragonite cause to me it feels like a good move to have especially the uses it could have, Pryce’s piloswine, jasmines team, the houndoom and such, but the punches basically invalidate it cause they are tms while surf is HM so that need to delete in blackthorn is a pain
My prediction: it will do well because it has good stats, great attack, access to a lot of generic coverage moves and probably strong generic normal moves.
I've put a few songs into these games. It'd be awesome if you had that for these runs. You have two melody instruments, one bass, one drum. The drums are absolutely vital to making anything sound good. You cannot use one channel to play two notes. Only four notes can play at once, again one of them being bass. And in gen 1 at least it causes weird freezing issues if you use the fourth channel. I don't think transposing it for this game would be all that hard compared to everything you've done. Let me know if you want any help with it.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Alright so you should have most the work done! Transcribing them to the .asm files may be hard but surely you can get some people willing to help with that grunt work.
