Hey great video this makes a lot of sense. I have turtle beach stealth 700 gen 2 headphones. Can I get this same result if I purchase the mix amp and adapter? I have an optic cable laying around…
hey, so I do not have the optical connector but I can plug the optical cable from my mixamp straight into my TV. Will I still be getting the 'full experience'?
In the official astro video for setting up on the ps5 they say you should enable dolby in the ps5 settings not linear pcm what are your thoughts on that?
Great video. Any idea why I cant play audio through my tv? Before all i had to do was mute my mic and turn the volume down on the mixamp, while turning the volume up on my speakers. Now its completely muted and I havent changed anything
That's right. The 3d audio setting is greyed out when you use hdmi audio. I would rather have Dolby surround sound anyway. 3d audio is using stereo sound to make a simulated surround sound. It can be good, but the games are encoded with true surround sound which the astro can output natively. So it's the best option to select. For people using regular headphones the 3d audio is good. Astro is best!
Great question i was wondering what's the big deal about 3d audio i had 7.1 surround on my turtle beach which was pin point on foot step location. So again what's the big deal about 3d audio?
It's Sony marketing and hype. It may catch in like Blu-ray, or it may die out like minidisc. Sony always has a 'new' format they try to push out. If they get a lock on the market it means more revenue streams for them. It worked really well for them last time they coupled it with a console, so now they will try with this. I don't see it catching on
Turns out I’m dealing with this in 2024. I have my Astro Mixamp Pro TR, Astro adapter, Elgato HD60X and PS5 for streaming. My headphone audio sound god awful. I have all the settings the same as yours BUT I’m using the Sony pulse headphones connected to the Mixamp through a TRR audio jack. Does that make a difference? Or should I buy the A40 headset? I tried fiddling with the Astro Command Center eq settings but nothing. My sound is no better than some cheap $5 string earphones. 😩
I took the astro base setting and pumped up the treble a bit more and kept the mids where they were and pushed the bass slightly down. Then saved that as my default sound. Thanks for the love. It's always good to hear when someone appreciates what we do here
In my other video I show you exactly how to set it all up. If you can find an hdmi extractor that is hdmi 2.1 it will not affect the signal. Currently the inexpensive ones only go up to 2.0, so that will limit your 4k signal down to that standard.
If you can find one that is actually 2.1 that is great. Be careful. Some claim to be 2.1 or even 2.0 but are not Check the specs as well. If it's 2.1 it should do 4k@120hz
Hey very good video and well explained all through i have other extractor my question ist when i live it to pass through should i have a surround sound When on console and astro ist dolby on? I have a 2019 version of astro 40
Why does the HDMI splitter on Amazon say " 1. Not compatible with Netflix and RUclips video websites." ? Other models say doesn't support Astro headsets and may need to be turned down to 1080p. The info on Amazon is confusing me.
Would’ve been a lot more helpful if he showed us how the wires fed into the device like I have no idea where the other end of the optical cable goes into besides the adapted
Try unplugging the optical cable and see if it sounds different in either mode If you're not seeing a difference I suspect you're not getting dolby sound
Hi, thank you for the video! Why can't you abilitate the 3d audio with your settings? Setting the "output to headphone" as "all audio", it can be activated and the sound works really better. What do you think about it?
3d audio just isn't as good Plus, not all games support it. So you'll get worse sound when it does support 3d audio, and stereo sound for anything that doesn't support it VS Setup the extractor and get full Dolby surround on everything I'll take the second option every time. I prefer Dolby over pulse in its current form.
Nice! Now Dolby works right! But i prefer stereo for cod. In stereo i can here the steppings better. Can you confirm this? How looks your sound settings?
I used to prefer stereo better, but I find the volume and intensity is hard to distinguish. I was always paranoid someone was practically beside me when really he was a long way away Switching to Dolby solved that problem. People near by sound nearby. People far away are actually far away
Okay small question the optical cable. You plug it into the base station then to the adapters, but when you plug it into the base station does it go to the input or output?
I have ps4 slim but I cant get full 3d surrond sound. I have the exact same extractor as you. No clue what I'm doing new to the headset any help? (You earned a new subscription btw) edit: I have the hyper cloud pros and they are more 3d than my a50s gen 3. So I feel like I messed up my Astros or something especially since they cost 300 dollars
Thanks for the support The settings are actually exactly the same as ps4 slim. I'll maybe throw a video together for that too. But, just find the menu and set it up the same and it should work. If you unplug the optical cable and the system sound stays working then it's not setup right
I have everything plugged in correctly, but when my output device is set to the astro headset I cannot change my dmi device type. Do you know why that is?
Very nice, thank you, but i have one problem ! When i choose dolby instead of linear i hear a very loud „cracking“ noice. Does someone know how to fix this?? Thank you !!!
When you unplug the optical cord does it go away? If so, then your cord is broken, or the settings are wrong If it doesn't go away then your USB has issues
What will happens when on hdmi extractor i leave it to pass and i do not change the options on ps5 like 5.1 channel instead i leave it to 2 channel and just enable it on mixamp do i get then surround sound ?
Hey man thanks for the video. Can you or anyone recommend settings to make the Astro A40 with Mixamp Gen 3 from optical cable connected to the TV sound good? On Warzone the directional sound is not accurate.
@GearsandTech The reason I ask is because if I change audio output in the settings menu to all audio (instead of just chat audio, basically disabling the mixamp) and I enable 3d audio on PlayStation the direction of sound is much better but I lose functionality of the mixamp. I feel like there must be some settings that can be adjusted to get optimal results.
You will not get 3D audio at all in this setup. I believe that is a good thing. My tests of 3D audio were that Dolby is currently better. Sounds better, and is more 'true'.
I did everything exact same i have brand new ps5 astro a40 tr astro optical so when i switch it from all audio to chat only then i wont hear anything in the game
Hello, 7.1 is better. Astro says to set it to 5.1 so that's what I also recommended. I tried 7.1 and noticed no change 1 over the other. So you could do the same
Can the astro a40/mix amp have the 3d sound but also the chat mixer enabled? I've tried with 'all audio' versus 'chat audio' and 3d selected and it seems better however you cant then edit the chat volume using the mixer if that makes sense
That's an excellent question. At the time I didn't realize my tv had optical out. That's why I didn't even do anything with it. It was about a month later that I realized it had it when I upgraded my tv to a 4k one But thanks for asking. Glad you're enjoying the content
Thank you for this video, I do have a question I just got my PS5 and I will be picking up a 1440p 165Hz monitor, if I connect my PS5 using this or any other HMDI extractor will I still get a 120Hz gaming experience? thank you in advance.
It depends a lot on the extractor. Most likely you will not. You would have to look at using only usb like my video that dropped today. Or, check back tomorrow afternoon, I'll have an even newer video with one other top secret method to make it all work.
I’ll try using a Tendak Converter (found it on Amazon) and drop my monitor resolution from 2k to 1080 and look sooo bad I returned back and buy the Astro Device I hope it’s work
Check the video I released today. Not sure if monitors have optical line out. If it does then the setup I show in that video would be your best option.

@GT Canada - I have set this up on the Gen 4 mixamp and A40's. But I constantly get buzzing come into the headset and also when I speak people in the PS party can hear horrible buzzing and makes it unplayable. Whenever I touch any metal connection with the PS5 the buzzing stops. I have bough a noise reducer but it mutes the Astro's/ Any idea how I can stop the buzzing
@@GearsAndTech - I have tried multiple USB's it feels like it a PS5 grounding issue. All cables are new and tried multiple cables... Wondering if ferrite chokes might work?
It's tough to say. You shouldn't need to add any filters or chokes. If you do, then something is wrong Have you tried that mixamp on ps4? Possibly try the USB and moxamp on a pc and see if you get the same issue. That will tell you if the mixamp is ok or not (hopefully)
I got the Astro adapter but when I connected theres no 2160p available so I just connected the optical and the micro usb to the usb on the Ps5 and don’t ask me why but it works perfectly without any graphic downgrades. Without any hdmi cable
In that setup just unplug the optical cable too, you're not actually using it and have stereo sound If you're happy with it like that then you can return the adapter, you won't need it You have to have the hdmi plugged into it for the optical port to be active.
You can still get 4k video output. You're just capped at 60 fps. You won't get 120fps If you're using the adapter but do not have the hdmi cable plugged into it from the PS5 then all you're getting right now is stereo sound from the USB cable.
I don't see it catching on
Can you use 7.1 instead of 5.1?
Good tutorial!
Yes, but optical only passes 5.1 over it so won't make a difference
@@GearsAndTech thanks for the reply
@@GearsAndTech also will this work the same using an elgato hd60x to stream from ps5?
Thanks
Turns out I’m dealing with this in 2024. I have my Astro Mixamp Pro TR, Astro adapter, Elgato HD60X and PS5 for streaming. My headphone audio sound god awful. I have all the settings the same as yours BUT I’m using the Sony pulse headphones connected to the Mixamp through a TRR audio jack. Does that make a difference? Or should I buy the A40 headset? I tried fiddling with the Astro Command Center eq settings but nothing. My sound is no better than some cheap $5 string earphones. 😩
If you have other headphones try those first.
Very informational! Love your stuff! What eq setting do you have on your mix amp...?
I took the astro base setting and pumped up the treble a bit more and kept the mids where they were and pushed the bass slightly down. Then saved that as my default sound.
Thanks for the love. It's always good to hear when someone appreciates what we do here
1. Will any hdmi optical extractor work? (will the hdmi 2.1 be affected by the adaptor)
2. Do you have to toggle the switch to 5.1 2CH PASS?
Thanks
In my other video I show you exactly how to set it all up.
If you can find an hdmi extractor that is hdmi 2.1 it will not affect the signal.
Currently the inexpensive ones only go up to 2.0, so that will limit your 4k signal down to that standard.
@@GearsAndTech so essentially 4k60 will work no problem, it that right?
@@realkaileeno hdmi 2.0 will support 4K at 60fps but not 4K at 120, which as of now, only a couple ps5 games run at
What if the hdmi extracter has a 2.1 pass is that good?
If you can find one that is actually 2.1 that is great.
Be careful. Some claim to be 2.1 or even 2.0 but are not
Check the specs as well. If it's 2.1 it should do 4k@120hz
If I want to use stereo on the mixamp do I change the channel to 2ch on the ps5
Leave the hdmi extractor on pass through. Then switch between stereo and surround on the mixamp itself
Hey for the mixamp for Astro a40 the one with that little star ⭐️ is it for Dolby
I think the star is for the tr edition. 'tournament ready'
Hey very good video and well explained all through i have other extractor my question ist when i live it to pass through should i have a surround sound When on console and astro ist dolby on? I have a 2019 version of astro 40
Dolby needs to be turned on the astro yes. Otherwise it'll just give you stereo sound
@@GearsAndTech thank you very much !
Why does the HDMI splitter on Amazon say " 1. Not compatible with Netflix and RUclips video websites." ? Other models say doesn't support Astro headsets and may need to be turned down to 1080p. The info on Amazon is confusing me.
You can pick up the adapter needed to make this work here
amzn.to/2L5XAkv
@@GearsAndTech Alright thanks for the reply.
Do you recommend a splitter that will do 120hz or it doesn’t exist?
Back of tv is best as it supports pass through without messing with fps
Otherwise if you can find a 120hz splitter then that the next best option
Would’ve been a lot more helpful if he showed us how the wires fed into the device like I have no idea where the other end of the optical cable goes into besides the adapted

ruclips.net/video/VQaSeO8OHWA/видео.html
Great video, but are you sure with the linear pcm and not dolby settings/bitstream?
No, you want to set it to Dolby, not linear. I added a note in the top corner but not everyone sees it.
You showed a PS5 but did the settings on a PS4. I can’t seem to find the 5.1 channel on it. Thanks
That's the ps5 settings.
Once the audio out is set to amplifier the setting that was greyed out will become available.
Should I be using the star or Dolby when playing warzone? Any help would be great?
As long as Dolby is setup and working correctly that's what I use
@@GearsAndTech on ps5? I switched that many times from Dolby to star I cant figure out which I prefer
Try unplugging the optical cable and see if it sounds different in either mode
If you're not seeing a difference I suspect you're not getting dolby sound
Thanks!. Unfortunately not 3D audio
Would it still get surround sound if I use the optical on my tv?
Yes it will. I show that connection in another video
Why in my settings it won’t switch from hdmi input to usb input? I can’t figure it out
Hi, thank you for the video!
Why can't you abilitate the 3d audio with your settings?
Setting the "output to headphone" as "all audio", it can be activated and the sound works
really better.
What do you think about it?
3d audio just isn't as good
Plus, not all games support it.
So you'll get worse sound when it does support 3d audio, and stereo sound for anything that doesn't support it
VS
Setup the extractor and get full Dolby surround on everything
I'll take the second option every time.
I prefer Dolby over pulse in its current form.
@@GearsAndTech Thank you for the answer.
Do you get s buzz at all while using it or when you plug an Aux in the back for your phone
No buzz
The optical port of the TV has the same sound quality of the HDMI adapter?
Yes
Nice! Now Dolby works right! But i prefer stereo for cod. In stereo i can here the steppings better. Can you confirm this? How looks your sound settings?
I used to prefer stereo better, but I find the volume and intensity is hard to distinguish. I was always paranoid someone was practically beside me when really he was a long way away
Switching to Dolby solved that problem. People near by sound nearby. People far away are actually far away
Okay small question the optical cable. You plug it into the base station then to the adapters, but when you plug it into the base station does it go to the input or output?
Input.
For some reason my hdmi device type is greyed out, do you know why?
What if I can’t change my output to Astro a40? Even with hdmi adapter? Is it the monitor or that itself?
Sounds like usb issue or the switch on your mixamp is set to pc
Question as to why I can’t change hdmi device type it’s greyed out?
I have ps4 slim but I cant get full 3d surrond sound. I have the exact same extractor as you. No clue what I'm doing new to the headset any help? (You earned a new subscription btw) edit: I have the hyper cloud pros and they are more 3d than my a50s gen 3. So I feel like I messed up my Astros or something especially since they cost 300 dollars
Thanks for the support
The settings are actually exactly the same as ps4 slim.
I'll maybe throw a video together for that too. But, just find the menu and set it up the same and it should work.
If you unplug the optical cable and the system sound stays working then it's not setup right
@@GearsAndTech okay I'll try to get this setup again thank you :D

Very nice, thank you, but i have one problem ! When i choose dolby instead of linear i hear a very loud „cracking“ noice. Does someone know how to fix this?? Thank you !!!
When you unplug the optical cord does it go away?
If so, then your cord is broken, or the settings are wrong
If it doesn't go away then your USB has issues
Does that hdmi adapter work for ps4 slim?
Yes. Everything in this video was used on ps4 slim before I switched to ps5
What will happens when on hdmi extractor i leave it to pass and i do not change the options on ps5 like 5.1 channel instead i leave it to 2 channel and just enable it on mixamp do i get then surround sound ?
I think when you set the ps5 to 2 channel it only passes 2 channel audio out. So you would not get surround sound
Should focus on the adaptor , the connection and the set up
I have another video that actually covers the entire setup.
clutch video, mate
You know it
Hey man thanks for the video.
Can you or anyone recommend settings to make the Astro A40 with Mixamp Gen 3 from optical cable connected to the TV sound good? On Warzone the directional sound is not accurate.
Warzone has bad directional sound.
@GearsandTech
The reason I ask is because if I change audio output in the settings menu to all audio (instead of just chat audio, basically disabling the mixamp) and I enable 3d audio on PlayStation the direction of sound is much better but I lose functionality of the mixamp. I feel like there must be some settings that can be adjusted to get optimal results.
if your using a monitor should you put AV amplifier ?
Really it doesn't make a difference. I would say yes. That way you know the full sound is going out as well
The problem tho is that u can’t use the 3D audio like that can you?
You will not get 3D audio at all in this setup. I believe that is a good thing. My tests of 3D audio were that Dolby is currently better. Sounds better, and is more 'true'.
I did everything exact same i have brand new ps5 astro a40 tr astro optical so when i switch it from all audio to chat only then i wont hear anything in the game
Your optical connection has issues then.
Game audio comes from optical
Chat audio comes from usb
Hi, so why not setup number of channels to 7.1? Wouldn't 7.1 be better?
Hello, 7.1 is better. Astro says to set it to 5.1 so that's what I also recommended. I tried 7.1 and noticed no change 1 over the other.
So you could do the same
@@GearsAndTech okay, cool. Thanks
I set up the way you said buy on my ps5 on the audio output it only says HDMI device (tv) no mixamp to switch to do you know why this is please
Either you're using an Xbox mixamp which won't work, or you need to try a different USB cable
Can the astro a40/mix amp have the 3d sound but also the chat mixer enabled? I've tried with 'all audio' versus 'chat audio' and 3d selected and it seems better however you cant then edit the chat volume using the mixer if that makes sense
No, the chat mixer will not work when using 3d audio. You need to use the mixer in the ps5 Gui
@@GearsAndTech Why didnt you think of putting the optical into your TV back in nov 2020? Btw you are awesome
That's an excellent question.
At the time I didn't realize my tv had optical out. That's why I didn't even do anything with it.
It was about a month later that I realized it had it when I upgraded my tv to a 4k one

Yeah bro I didn’t even think about it and set it up and I was still getting 120hz
@@xzrrt999 120 hz with an HDMI extractor setup? That would be a wicked high quality extractor to be able to do that.
Hi good video pal iv gone on mine and my av amplifier is not able to be clicked or changed... I did do the mix amp update for USB?

It's tough to say. You shouldn't need to add any filters or chokes.
If you do, then something is wrong

Possibly try the USB and moxamp on a pc and see if you get the same issue.

I got the Astro adapter but when I connected theres no 2160p available so I just connected the optical and the micro usb to the usb on the Ps5 and don’t ask me why but it works perfectly without any graphic downgrades. Without any hdmi cable
In that setup just unplug the optical cable too, you're not actually using it and have stereo sound
If you're happy with it like that then you can return the adapter, you won't need it
You have to have the hdmi plugged into it for the optical port to be active.

You can still get 4k video output. You're just capped at 60 fps. You won't get 120fps
If you're using the adapter but do not have the hdmi cable plugged into it from the PS5 then all you're getting right now is stereo sound from the USB cable.
