Some great points were brought up in the comments of the original video including that I was not using my meter to check the resistance of the circuit correctly when I did the resistance check on the knock sensor therefore I HAD to make this video covering that mistake along with video of doing the test properly and how to set the multimeter. I also take the opportunity to show the different settings on a DVOM and how to use them so I think this video stands on it's own just for that purpose.
Here's a link to the original video.

This old electronic tech watched the previous one and caught that you were using the continuity range, rather than a higher range to test for high resistance. Glad you caught that and did this video. But another thing: the sensors are supposed to put out a certain voltage, in the millivolt range, depending on the frequency of the knock. It's often proportional to the frequency, unless you're using a flat-response sensor, like a Delphi. Their info on that is here: www.delphi.com/manufacturers/auto/sensors/engine-and-transmission/diesel-and-gasoline/flat-response-knock - and you'll see that it's pretty flat, putting out (spec.) about 27mV at mid-range of 9kHz. What you could've done with the old sensor is put your DVOM on a low AC volts scale, clip your leads as before (one to the ground, other to the sensor connector) and then tap on the block with a wrench to see if it put out any voltage. A DVOM with a peak hold feature makes it easier to see what the peak voltage was. If you're not getting something, hopefully close to what the Delphi sensor spec is, then you know it's the sensor - and not the wiring, as is sometimes the case. IF you DO get a few millivolts - even something low - then you'd want to go downstream of the sensor with the connector back on it, all the way to the ECU if necessary, and do the same to see if the wiring is bad. In the "olden days" we'd check the entire circuit, then divide the circuit in half, check again, then in half again until we found the section that was bad if there was one (or more) connectors in between the component being measured and where the signal was supposed to be coming out.

Eric, one of the first two things I learned about selectable range multimeters is always test with the highest range possible first, and dial down from there. The second was never change ranges while under load.

Technically, the voltage results from deformation of the crystal, regardless of whether it's from pressure or vibration etc.

Yo man so I had a knock sensor CEL on and replaced the sensor 3 times thinking they were bad sensors. but not knowing I was accidentally connecting the power steering plug into the knock sensor and the knock sensor plug into the power steering plug. Once I found out I switched the plugs but the cel was still on and I drove it about 200 miles now and still on. Could I have broken all the sensors I bought by plugging the power steering plug into it? I have also checked continuity it beeps every time so I know the harness is good. Should I just buy another plug and try it again? I have a 2000 civic with a d16y8 engine

@Desterado in this video. ERIC said the "auto range" feature wasn't good enough because it did not go high enough.
Example: you have bricks on a pully. Put the rope is only long enough to pull the bricks up to the window of the house. You need them on top of the house. Though this may be easier, it is not a good option.

    Hello Eric!
Have being Long Time Subscriber and i really enjoy your educating Videos!
I am trying to Help Out a friend with His European CL9 Accord K24A3, he is getting the P0325 Code, We have tried so far to test the voltage of the sensor as you showed on the video, we had somewhere arround 11.94 Volt on it, we have also the Honda diagnostic system HDS HIM (not the original one) and we even tried to troubleshoot the problem with the instructions given from the service manual, which include testing if there is a short circuit etc... Everything was ok, of course we raplaced the sensor as well, 2 times, the 2nd one is a very expensive original from Honda, the problem still occurs, (we even changed the knock sensor wire) with the HDS we even tried to test the VTC and we get everytime failed test and the lamp goes on, (the VTC Test is about testing the values of what is supposed to be with the current values and we also tested the camshaft sensors from vtc and were ok) as we were driving arround with the HDS connected and as i was seeing live data by it, i found out that whenever the Check engine light comes on that the voltage of the knock sensor goes from regularly 0.04 - 0.06 -8 to 0....
If you have any idea of a possible troubleshoot would be very much appreciated and will get you some more subs just for the sake of helping!
Friendly regards and much love From Europe Sir!

The auto ranging function is for continuity tests for things like fuses. Which means that if there is close to no resistance, it beeps. Which is great for testing fuses, because close to no resistance=good fuse, lost of resistance=dead fuse because there is no connection from one side to the other. In other words, your test was correct the first time. If it beeped, there was no break in the circuit, since it didn't beep, it meant the resistance was too high and the knock sensor was broken.

If you cross the prongs, you'll either see a resistance reading or you'll find continuity. If the bolt goes through the center of the sensor, like this one did, then put the ground prong there, or on the negative battery post.

My element 2006 engine light was checked with code p0325 few months @t said "knock sensor, and battery voltage low." I replaced new knock sensor. Then engine light disappeared. then the battery was tested still good. But battery power run out. I replace a brand new battery. So far it is OK. Lately, when I turn on the ignition. It is hard to turn on, second time, I can turn on the ignition. I went to ask the mechanic, one store mechanic said it is not the fuel pump, It is starter. Second store mechanic said fifty-fifty starter issue. When the gasoline is in low tank, it is hard to turn the ignition. After I fill full tank of gasoline. Turn on the ignition has no problem. Yesterday, my engine light on again. I have O'reily check the engine code again. It said P0325 knock sensor, and battery voltage low.
I have already replace brand new knock sensor and brand new battery three months ago. So, what is the really issue of code P0325 to my element? Be advise. Thanks,

great video! Im just gonna add some point, The beep function is not really an auto range, that function is really just dedicated to continuity test and depending to a meter that beep function will not work or give you infinite resistance if the resistance is greater than 20k ohms or depending to the specs of your meter. thats why i never use that beep function even doing continuity check, because it my give you a false indication.

Resistance checks can be tricky as the device you are checking can change resistance depending on how much current is passed through it.
So some older meters will pass more current than newer digitals so unless you know you are testing a resistor or peice of wire the results can be foggy.
some meters send the current the wrong way so semiconductor devices may not appear to work.
    Smashing recap eric :-)

  • @davelowe1977

The starter solenoid (small wire) typically receives a current when you turn the key to crank the engine. When this happens, two events occur: the pin that engages with the flywheel to start the engine moves forward, and an attached mechanism slides to make contact with the big connector to the starter motor itself. Thus it rotates until you release the key from crank. The pin is spring loaded and goes back into the starter when the engine fires. I assume you have a no start no crank situation?

depends on what broke, the pulley ore the little axle where it sat on, if it whas the pulley you can replace that ( i ques cause on most vehicles it will ) if its the little axle your pretty much screwed, you either need to replace the part where that pulley sat on i.e. alternator, waterpump, power steering pump, airco compressor. but if it whas the crank your toast.

Hello Eric, can you read this and help me out? Thank you.
My Nissan Quest engine seized so I had to replace the engine. I was going to scrap it, but wife said no, fix it okay wifey....
I bought a nissan quest engine with fairly low miles for 350 only at a junk yard shop. A mechanic, which I don't know him very well, put the engine in. After a week, he called in and said the van is ready. My wife was happy so I did too.
50% of the Problem : I drove the van from his shop without issue, but I've noticed two things, first one, the fan was on all the time. Probably he couldn't fix the automatic kick on. Second, the alignment was off.
Serious problem: I drove it today, and the engine wants to stall. The rpm is high and runs rough. When you want to accelerate, the engine seems to be flooded or something choks it. I had to drive it very slowly on interstate with only 40-45 mph with hazards on.
Hint: This mechanic is very busy. Today, I popped the hood and found couple stuff that he have forgotten to tighten them up.
    1. There is no bolts on fuse boxes under the hood.
    2. the radiator hose that goes to the thermostat housing was not clamped on. Water was leaking.
    3. Cable harness was not tightening up.
    4. Battery was no placed in the correct position.
Is this mechanic trustable? I would say that he did something wrong to my car. Your insights much appreciated.
I scanned the emission port, and come up with 2 codes that are belonging to the O2 sensors. I am a light mechanic, but I don't thing the O2 sensors would cause this problem. What would it be the issue? Today, the mechanic said the problem could a knock sensor. But there is not code for knocking sensor. Thanks again.

    • @quiet-wolf
      @quiet-wolf 8 лет назад

+Mungbeanz100 no I did not, but I figure out what the issue is. before you spend more money on the knock Secor diagnos the issue by looking if the car isn't eating oil. With in my case was the problem. I also check my spark plugs and found oil in cylinder 2,3and 4.with means that the head gasket was cracked by the car eating the oil. and that's why you will get the check engine light on because you might not have any oil in your car with over time will cause the engine rattle.

Although piezo could be used, at high temperatures they "depolarize", or loose the ability to make a voltage when disturbed. I think the knock sensor you're using is probably a coil of wire wrapped around a magnet. A piezo has a resistance in the gig-ohm (1,000,000,000) range while a magnet/coil arrangement can be easily made in the 700K ohm range. I'm not a mechanic but an electrical engineer.

No listen on the silinoid the top wire ? control wire is shorting, my question is can I by-passthis wirwe as ye it is causeing a no power issue and id I hit it right it will start, but I am wondering about the grommet that is at the top does it have 2 leads or can I cut it am wire it direct > I am in a disareey as it seems to have 2 wires and is shorting causeing my truck not to turn and it losses all power if not correct et it still wont star ? How do I rewire that one control wire to silioid

Good video. I'd like to point out that the CONTINUITY range on the DMM is not good for testing resistance. It's fine for open/short testing. This setting outputs a higher value of current which is not ideal for sensor testing. For low resistance circuits is fine. On the other hand, as therealjammit pointed our, a resistance check on piezoelectric devices is useless. A continuity check for open circuit is fine, but crystal devices are in the very high resistance range. DMM are just not capable.

When does the detonation occur? I have a car, 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, that I thought had a detonation problem. I increased the octane of the fuel, and it didn't help. The problem, a grounded out spark plug.

Did that fix it? I bet your xterra has the 3.3 v6 doesn't it. My friend's '98 Infiniti QX4 (suv just like a pathfinder with the 3.3 v6) is doing the same thing you describe.

Unfortunately, Eric, the green-printed Auto-Range scales on the meter are almost impossible to read on camera. They are all but invisible, even on close-ups. When held in the light ju-u-u-ust right, the characters can just barely be made out. (Ghost flames, anyone?) Caused me just a bit of confusion, anyway.

I think it is safe to say "On MOST vehicles". Some sensors DO VARY. Detonation detection methods vary. You need to know WHICH TYPE of sensor is being used. Field effect (transistorized) and coil, are two types that I know of, to consider.
Field Effect sensors CAN BE DAMAGED by "probing" so BE CAREFUL.

i don't know why, but the kknock sensor u r testig works diferent than the ones who we have here (argentina).
here the knoks sensors don't have a 5volts reference, because they are "voltage generators" for diagnosig it u have to put ur multimeter in alternant voltage and toch both kock's sensors terminal.
sorry for my bad english, i hope u can understand me.

Eric I am having a problem with my car, According to the mechanic he said the car runs good when that is not on (knock sensor) He said I could run My 1999 Grand AM GT without it. I feel that is a bad idea running the car without the knock sensor.Last week they said it was the Catalytic converter which they changed. Problem still there (Problem: only at take off it I guess sputters) He also says he is not sure if that is the problem (knock sensor) until it is in and run the car. Is that true?

If it hasn't been done already, I would change out the timing belt. My friend had an outback and the engine basically blew up, because the timing belt snapped.
IIRC the belt should be changed every 100k miles, and at 50k~60k miles for regions with extreme temp variations.

Dude what is beep mode? I assume you mean continuity ? FYI continuity is not resistance it’s the reciprocal of resistance. Or in simple terms opposite of resistance it’s a good test for wires coils and things like diodes not for checking resistance
