The worst thing about Reddit is it's basically killed all other independent forum sites, there used to be shit heaps of forum sites out there about every subject you could want and if you didn't like one you could just switch to another forum that discussed the same topic, most are dead now though replaced by subreddits where half the comments are deleted and everyone left is just agreeing with each other
I'd say forums moved over to Discord than Reddit.
unfortunate result with the consolidation of folks into social media platforms. There's still good forums or discords that are moderated in good faith, 10x better than Reddit.

You can still find them. Its mostly older folk that occupy them. Some independent sites, lots of fb groups, etc. Main thing is many share the same problems as any online forum, with constant drama or power abuse. It's great if you have specific questions though.

Internet “anti-capitalists” in general are practically the same as controlled opposition. I actually tried Reddit but I was singled out, cussed out, and insulted on almost every post I made, but then I’d see that everyone else was also doing what people hated on me for doing, except no one left angry hate comments on their posts when they did it. Not to mention moderators also falsely banned me and would punish me extra harshly or for something I didn’t even do. There was one time I actually told a moderator that banned me for something I “did” that I didn’t do it. He said “well I don’t know what to tell you. Respect people next time.” And I was so pissed off because I DID respect people and I still got banned for it. And it was a permanent ban, so there wasn’t even a next time. I soon left Reddit. It’s trash and 99% of all communities required, like, a billion karma to join. I have never seen anything so hostile to new users in my entire life. I’ve seen literal pedophiles get more respect than I did on that site.

The fact that Redditors of all people actually managed to organize a blackout and make it work for a couple of days is somehow both surprising and expected at the same time.

There was an account that a username that lined up with where she grew up or where she lived and had a number somewhat tied to her, it was very involved in politics and had racked up some of the most activity on the site, but it had long absences that aligned with numerous instances of her being under investigation.

@@newdivide9882 @blortorglethegreat3868 @nuclearbomb9483 to elaborate a little on what these people said, u/maxwellhill was an active user of reddit and a top contributor to r/worldnews. i believe the account was in the top 10 of highest karma on the entire site. i know for a fact the account was the first to hit 1 million karma. the account also moderated a number of subreddits, including, i believe, r/worldnews. the account posted frequently to r/worldnews which is very frightening, because it shows you that even on a user based news aggregation site like reddit, you're still under the influence of the powerful elite, and they are still sometimes the ones who control the content you see and the content you don't.
as far as the evidence of ghislaine maxwell being the controller of that account, here's what i remember off the top of my head.
1. username includes maxwell, which is obviously ghislaines last name.
2. the word "hill" in the username could reference an estate owned by ghislaines father.
3. the user posted religiously, DAILY, for years, with a few exceptions
3. a. during the occurence of big events in ghislaines life, like the death of her father
3. b. at times ghislaine was known to be without an internet connection, ie, long trips on a plane
3. c. after ghislaines arrest.
4. the user commented multiple times about the differing age of consent in different countries.
theres a lot more evidence. you can read the post about it yourself, google search "Here is the evidence that Reddit user MaxwellHill is Ghislaine Maxwell." and a reddit post will show up. if it doesn't show up, let me know.
Note that all the subreddits that make fun of powertripping mods get mysteriously shut down, even though they don't break any rules. You're onto something with this "symbiotic relationship" you describe.

There’s a reason why I only stick to subreddits of my favourite pieces of media now. But hearing stories of how Reddit mods are and seeing all this go down has genuinely been an entertaining ride.
I unfollowed so many of the mainstream subs and it made my home page so much peaceful.
I got perma banned from the Series X sub by mentioning Playstation.
I mostly only open Reddit nowadays if there's a bug I cannot fix in a game I play
It's especially great with small media with a cult following, because the entire community concentrates to a few places online, allowing the subs to have an actual sense of humor

I remember getting suspended from Reddit on multiple accounts. Have never looked back since. Last I remember is the Aimee Chandler debacle and hating that my favorite subreddit r/cringetopia was closing it’s doors in protest and having subreddits like r/genzedong and r/conservative joining hand in hand in protest. Hell even r/bbwhentai of all places closed down in protest. Plus I was just on new ADHD medication that made me feel very nauseous and anxious about the whole situation.

Another reason why small subreddits turn sanitized when they get bigger is because a lot of these small subs start getting the attention of not only the mods, but the administrators too. if you're on a subreddit that administrators do not like, or if the administrators feel like they're not being enough of a janitor to those subs, they will try to force you the mods of that sub to "do your job". If you are like me that believes in the older internet where you could pretty much say anything short of things that are illegal by law, you can understand how subreddits that refuse to follow reddit's arbitrary terms of service would end up turning to crap when they get bigger. The only reason why small subs escape this stuff is because no one knows about them. If something on a small subreddit happens to hit the "frontpage" and it's even 10% close to edgy, there's a high chance that one of the hall monitors that read reddit who is just a user will report that post. if you have enough chronically offended idiots report a post, it will eventually receive the ire of the administrators. If you're a mod and you refuse to listen to them because you don't believe in over moderation and think free, or you don't do your moderation actions quickly enough, then the administrators will simply kick all your mods out and replace them with janitors that will do their job for them.
No matter what you do, even if you're a good mod the Reddit hyper janitor admins will get you instead.
I was perm banned from some random sub for saying I still enjoy the Harry Potter books despite Rowlings's stance on trans issues. So I replied to the ban DM with 'You guys need therapy'... immediately site-wide banned for life lmao. My mental health went WAY up once I cut that site completely out of my browsing experience.
10 month late reply, but them banning you for that comeback line shows how thin-skinned these unkempt megalomaniacs are.

I both like and hate Reddit at the same time. The mods can be incredibly annoying and if you say something that goes “against” what everyone else thinks on a certain sub you’ll be relentlessly bullied. But some subs have good content and I like having a certain place to go for a certain topic.
I used to occasionally use reddit.
Saw a video of a woman in rural India being married to a dog. I suggested this was 'weird' but I also said that you shouldn't judge an entire culture based on the most rural, antiquated aspect of it.

I didnt realise how important reddit was and how much i used it until i tried looking up a solution to a tech problem i had and every subreddit being private, that happened like 5 times in a day, i realised its basically like if wikipedia suddenly stopped existing
There' s are plenty of online forums for that. Back when google was actually useful, I never go to reddit. Even now, I used youtube, stackoverflow, and Chagpt far more. Reddit is good for very specific technology, like a specific brand of 3D Printer or Software, but the internet before reddit are perfectly fine. I only used reddit to read dramas mostly.

The community did digging on Doreen, found they had a rape allegation from an ex girlfriend and THEY made a long ass whining post about how they were the victim even though they were the rapist. Also, the other mods immediately threw Doreen under the bus as they claimed to have had interview experience when that was a lie.

I was a Redditer until the boycott. Literally the day after it started, I had my first day at an internship. I went the entire first week without using Reddit because I had something to do. Haven’t used it since. And I feel so much better.
I never use Reddit specifically because of the karma system.
I made an account, and ended up never using it because I hated that I was straight up locked out of most Reddit blogs because I had no karma.
Looks like I dodged a bullet there.

A Reddit exodus isn't going to ruin the socialmediascape. The rise of bots and AI is already doing that. Social media in general just sucks more with every passing year to the point where I'm actually getting my information by reading books, going outside and talking to people. I'm predicting a massive social media crash later in this decade, and using it will go down in history as an addictive, unhealthy habit like drinking and smoking.
Same. I have all social media notifications off and all apps except RUclips uninstalled, so I only go on them when I choose to. And I've probably spent under 2 hours total on FB and Twitter this _year._
Part of the issue is that it's nearly impossible to have constructive disagreements with people on social media. (And believe me, I always try my best to be levelheaded.) All people know about me is a pseudonym and whatever text I write. It's much more difficult to be a jerk to people in real life, not because people want to avoid violence but because they see the other person as a flesh-and-blood human, not a block of text that challenges them.
I've done the same - read books, go outside more, talk to people IRL. I'm also starting to read more people's personal sites for entertainment, and I'm using search engines that return those more often. ("marginalia" is a good one.) It makes me feel like I'm using pre-2010 Internet again, before the 'net became Very Serious Business™ and Google started showing you nothing but ads and the most-visited websites (instead of most relevant).

I actually feel like, if there is a Reddit exodus, it will mostly go onto discord where it is a lot less centralized. Most subreddits already have their own discord server anyway, at least from what I can tell.
I hope not. Discord will delete servers if they are too edgy, it just doesn't happen all that much because whose ever on top seems to only do so based on reports, as opposed to being moral busy bodies with no lives.

She was so insulted that she replied with a huge novel about how she didnt even use reddit that often and even if she DID use reddit then some celebrity who she liked also uses reddit and therefore it is a good and cool thing. I am apart of a small subreddit that is pretty isolated all things considered from the rest of Reddit and we basically just recommend various films and tv shows to each other and discuss what we like about them. The person who owns it is also the only moderator and he’s barley ever online and it’s a wonder how the server hasn’t descended into chaos. No one literally had any idea any of this Reddit drama was going on lol. And I must say, all of these things aside, it is very easy to get caught up in the approval of other people’s opinions to the point where you’re scared to have an opinion of your own. It’s a scary to think about how swept up you can get in it, and If you have ever gotten to that point on any social media platform (Not Just Reddit) then it’s not good for you whatever it is and you need to quit immediately. That aside I have no problem with small Reddit communities who just like to share their common interests with each other.

In some specific cases Reddit actually manually changed moderating staff and forced them to open certain subreddits back up after the 2 day boycott. I somewhat infrequently visit the r/programminghumor subreddit, and as a gathering place of mostly programmers, developers and sysadmins they were A LOT more negative towards the API changes for obvious reasons. As a result the blackout on that subreddit was actually going to be indefinite until reddit rolled back the API changes. They got strongarmed after 3-4 days and they're currently still boycotting the changes by employing the automod to force posts to have their titles written in camelCase and comments to have an Import statement, with a new gimmick added weekly, with the ultimate goal of making the subreddit borderline unusable and as frustrating as possible until they roll the API changes back, if ever.
