    • @s3v3n3

@@AntonGully I'm not against rationality, and is away from the point I made. So to clarify, the issue is those who boast about it and become so involved with elevating themselves above others that they display an unlikable personality, and often picture the majority in a false light.
It's the same with religious people, so why does only one matter to you? If I argued being holy was good, then doesn't that make anybody who thinks of themselves as being better than others to the point of making it their personality a good thing? How is that not the same thing?
We ought to humble ourselves, and accept the fact that none of us are perfect or can be perfect, and are capable of wrongdoing. Pride comes before the fall, regardless of which mask it hides behind.

    • @beardonder
      @beardonder 3 месяца назад +14

@@AntonGully I think rationality is good in moderation. But faith is a natural part of being human too. So for example, when I was younger I had an experience where I think I witnessed an angel. It met the "criteria", I turned around, there was an intense bright light as if someone shone a searchlight into my face, within the light I could see a "humanoid shape", there was a "feeling" conveyed to me (nothing was spoken) that I guess if I was to put into words would be that "everything will be okay". I ended up looking away because it was too bright and then when I looked back it was gone (also I didn't actively seek this experience, it wasn't after a bout of prayer or meditation, and I wasn't on medication for anything).
If I was to be 100% rational and logic I'd be like "okay my brain glitched, move along" and I'd throw away a wonderful personal experience that I think a lot of people do seek, even super ardent atheists, for example Alex O'Connor said all he wants is his "Paul" moment to believe. But even as someone who considers themselves a person of faith I do reflect on it, I'm not immune to analysis and wanting to explain things away. Even with that experience I still have doubts and anger, it's frustrating.
Then there's the darker side of rationality that can lead to social darwinism and eugenics, obviously that'd be a super extreme take but it has happened.
I guess my point would be that we all contain faith and rational parts in our brains, maybe to act as checks and balances, and that to purge one side is a bit sad, both should be utilised in our lives.

    • @beardonder
      @beardonder 2 месяца назад

@@Doobjo thank you for the reply. At the time I wasn't super spiritual or religious (I still am not, I have regular internal wrestling with faith), I went to a CofE school which had mandatory (unless you were different faith) prayer so I was always trying to wriggle out of those in my childhood and youth.
I was also not on any medication and have no history of mental illness.
I also wish these experiences would be more common and I'm not sure why they're not. If you're interested there's a podcast called 'The bible for normal people', they have an episode where they interview a chap called Dale Allison about "mystery" and it touches a bit on that sort of thing.
I know some people say that proof would take away our choice but I'm not so sure. If we take Christian and islamic lore as the truth then angels knew of god and had spent time in his presence but still chose to go their own way.
I'm not sure I'd call myself a Christian anyway nowadays, my experience didn't announce Jesus is Lord or anything to me, I just went with Christianity because it seemed to share the trope (though pretty much all faiths feature encounters).
Maybe the mistake we make (and keep making) is trying to confine the divine to a "holy book" while at the same time saying it's an unknowable and infinite entity or force.

To oversimplify to a great degree, the issue with this brand of atheism is that it blames all manner of human ills on religion, refusing to acknowledge the many societal, biological, and psychological variables that often hide beneath that veneer of religiosity, even when said variables are affecting these atheists themselves.
For example, a great number of Internet skeptics who initially made their start on RUclips lambasting religion found themselves part of the “Anti-SJW” crowd. As admittedly annoying as social justice warriors can be at times, a great multitude raise great points that should be addressed, but are instead ignored in favour of mocking the more outwardly cringeworthy members of the movement.
This unwillingness to address the problems of today betrays an ignorance of the reality that as human beings and image-bearers of God we are obligated to be conduits for a Love greater than ourselves, no matter your faith or lack thereof.

As a Christian, I heard about how bad the subreddit was and decided to browse it out of morbid curiosity. The top posts were just vitriolic, as in I was genuinely surprised how much emotion these redditors put into hating Christianity as a whole. I shrugged off mostly everything I saw, because I didn't know if they'd had bad experiences with Christianity or anything like that, but the post that really pissed me off was one that ranted about how people should stop funding the restoration of Notre Dame because, quote, "Nobody cares about a building witha shit history". THAT got to me, because even if they didn't understand the religious and cultural value the building held, they completely disregarded the fact that it was a monument of human engineering, an incredible feat of architecture that took 200 years to build. It's really a marvel of ancient architecture, and being relegated to just "Some building with a shit history" just because of it's connection to Christianity is honestly infuriating.

Many people with religious trauma (whether it be physical, emotional, sexual) act like that, it's understandable how they feel angry and want to lash out and just... say the rude, socially inappropriate things they'd get punished severely for saying before, in a community of people who have similar experiences of trauma and understand + will not hurt you. But it is a very unhealthy coping mechanism, they should seek a more healthy healing process from professionals. And of course the fact that they see all religious people as those like their abusers is a problem, though this isn't exclusive to religious trauma (like some victims of SA being scared of all men/women) it is unfair for the less harmful religious folks

Hello, I hope you're doing well.
I don't know how to start this message, but I ask you to consider these two points:
      1) do you know a Christian who calls the father the *only* true God?
Jesus (peace and blessings be upon him) described the father as the **only** true God, and himself as a messenger sent from God:
John 17:3 NLT - And this is the way to have eternal life-to know you [reffering to the father], the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.
John 17:4 NLT - I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.
He also describes the father as the only one who is all-knwoing:
Matthew 24:36 ESV - “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.
The holy spirit is not God since it isn't all-knwoing. Jesus himslef isn't God since he isn't all-knowing. Only the father is all-knwoing. Only the father is God.
      2) Ask yourself, my friend, did Moses, David, Solomon, or Abraham worship Jesus (peace be upon him)? When did these prophets ask people to worship three God-heads?
They all called for the worship of one God - the creator of the universe. If you think they're going to heaven, you're not going with them; they didn't worship what you worship. They didn't worship Jesus (PBUH), a human god, or three God-heads. Reflect about this, my friend, before it's too late..
The word "muslim" itself means in Arabic "one who submits his will to God". All prophets did submit their own will to that of God. They did what pleases God, even if it went agianst the norm of their society or nations. They knew death is inevitable and that only God will hold them accountable.
      God says in the Quran:
(keep in mind that Allah means God in Arabic; even Arabic speaking Christians use Allah to refer to God)
      (66) Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon besides Allāh once the clear proofs have come to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds."
And in another chapter he says:
      ﴿قُل يا عِبادِ الَّذينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقوا رَبَّكُم لِلَّذينَ أَحسَنوا في هذِهِ الدُّنيا حَسَنَةٌ وَأَرضُ اللَّهِ واسِعَةٌ إِنَّما يُوَفَّى الصّابِرونَ أَجرَهُم بِغَيرِ حِسابٍ﴾ [Az-Zumar: 10]
      (10) Say,[1345] "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allāh is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account [i.e., limit]."
[1345]- The Prophet (ﷺ) is instructed to say on behalf of Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) to His believing servants.
      (11) Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion.
      (12) And I have been commanded to be the first [among you] of the Muslims."
      (13) Say, "Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."
      (14) Say, "Allāh [alone] do I worship, sincere to Him in my religion,
      (15) So worship what you will besides Him." Say, "Indeed, the losers are the ones who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, that is the manifest loss."
I know this might be a lot to handle, but I ask God to make it easy for you.
May God, by his grace and mercy, show us the truth and guide us towards it 🙏❤

I wasn’t exactly a declared atheist per-say, but I certainly didn’t care about faith at a point in my life not so long ago. I avoided getting involved in my church because I was sure that it was all just feel-good fluff. I was flirting with existential nihilism, but after I beat that, I decided to give my Bible a true read from start to finish.
Now, the Bible is a VERY long book and so I obviously did not do this in a day or even within a single week, it is far too cerebral to try and do that. But what I found in there definitely challenged my conceptions of what religion meant that I had gathered from the internet and barely paying attention to the sermons at church. Everything presented such a compelling and deep narrative of humanity and God with more nuance than I could have possibly expected. The people of the Bible weren’t larger-than-life stone statues, set in their characteristics and as flat as your average fairy tale character, they were people who felt real in a way I can hardly describe. Particularly, I was enraptured when I got to the Book of Job. Such a visceral story of loss, faith, temptation, and resilience. I’m not going to say any books of the Bible are more important than each other, but Job in particular touched me like no other.
Throughout this second shot at religion, I started talking about religion more with the people I knew. I found that among all of my atheist friends, the reason they were atheists wasn’t because of any real introspection, questioning, or research, but usually because of bad experiences with religious people, annoyance with and spite for their parents for making them go to church on Sundays, or just simple disinterest in thinking about the topic (no hatred or disdain to them for this, just something I noticed). On the other hand, I found many of the people I knew who were religious recounting an arduous and personally significant journeys they had been on to arrive at their current beliefs.
Long story short, I’m a proud Christian now and I thank my younger self for having had the guts to go on that journey.

The r/atheism user woke up groggy next to his 6 pack of empty Mountain Dew cans. He lifted his 400 pound frame off his bed wondering how many women he’d be able to harass on Xbox Live today when just then he remembered: today was the day. Today was the day he would finally get a chance to debate Christian sheep and slay their god in heaven. Excitedly, he got on his disability scooter and then into his 2007 Toyota Corolla. He drove to the hospital, scoffing every time he saw a crucifix bumper sticker and made sure to situate his fedora before he got out, parking in between two disability slots. When he entered, he got his camera ready, and going up to the third floor he thought “Reddit, the last enlightened place on Earth, will finally give me the attention I deserve and recognize me for my intelligence.” He entered into the room where his grandmother was lying and drawing her last breaths. A priest was standing next to her along with her children and grandchildren, anointing her and hearing her last confessions. “This is it,” he thought, “this is where I own those religiotards and achieve victory for atheism.” He boldly walked right next to his grandmother’s side and just as the priest said “may God bless your soul,” he bravely rebutted with “but there is no god to meet you in heaven. None of it is real. Your sky daddy won’t save you this time.” His grandmother looked on him in shock, opening her mouth. But then she slouched and a long beep was heard and her mouth remained wide open. “Yet another victory for atheism,” he said, looking at his family members who were stricken with faces of horror. “I’m sure they’ve finally realized their God is dead.” He opened Reddit, excited by the prospect of the karma he was going to get by posting the video he took on r/atheism.

Yes, but even then the arguments for theism are pretty good. I'd recommend checking the transcendental argument. The best versions of it are by Jay Dyer, but to understand his whole argument you gotta go a bit more into detail, tho he holds open debates for anyone to try and refute him every week. Or the verion by the church of the eternal logos (it's the name of the Channel )@user-mt2yc3uk3y.
Either way IMO atheism still has a lot of issues even historically on their denial of the reliability of the gospels and the book of Acts. Most of their arguments (IMO again. Take this with some salt as it might be the Dunning Kruger effect, but may not be. I tried hearing the atheist side on this) tend to be from silence or some try to say thst these books were just copying other sources etc. But there's a lot of proof that they're reliable. If you're curious, I'd recommend InspiringPhilosphy's channel and his series on the ressurection, the reliability of the new testament and the reliability of the gospels. He's pretty objective on the evidence and when it turns out he's wring he fixes the issue like when he found out his multihour document on the exodus was actually wrong he took it down and then created a whole new one.
