I’m a uni student renting a room to stay along with my peers, & the landlady who owns the place is genuinely nice to her tenants. She lets us have a festival celebration and even participates in it. When I caught covid a few months back, she helped get me test kits, medical supplies and some drinks while I was in lockdown.
Sure there are bad landlords out there, but imagine being so heated about the topic that you can’t even see the satire directed at you is hilarious.

I live in a place where the renter protections are such that renters can basically mooch for free rent for years before getting evicted, so if anything I feel bad for the landchads. Sure there are corporate ones that are awful, but the individual private ones just seem to get hosed left and right.

The other day I was doing my weekly rounds of asking for rent, as you do, and someone had the audacity the audacity to say they already paid for the month....the WHOLE MONTH! They even claimed it to be autopay. Clearly this is a lie since I only accept cash. Nothing can beat the feel of the semi cold semi warm transfer of paper bills in exchange for greener paper bills.
I know, as a landsexual, I feel very offended and threatened when rentoids try to postpone their rent payments and dodge their mandatory 99% tip.

From my experience it checks out, everyone who complains about rent choose to live in the priciest areas paying $950+ a month on a shitty apartment just so they can live in the city centre and save maybe 2 hours a week on train travel. Then to top it all off, most of them either buy expensive shit that is done just as well for cheap, eat out all the time or physically can't imagine having a good time if they don't spend £60+ on drinks.
So of course Reddit would get mad, it hit too close to home.

Rent out an apartment I bought in a small city because i prefer to live in rural areas so i rented it out to help finish paying it off. The pandemic fucked with both my and my renters jobs so we sat down and talked about what we should do. We came to the agreement for half off rent for a year until they could get a job again. Thankfully we have both returned to our jobs and they now pay the full rent again.

He said he would but never did so eventually i just called my dad and we fixed it together. I never planned on renting out a house and will probably sell it once it is payed off when nobody is renting and I don't really see it as a money maker.

Jeez you are a good person. I also lost my job and our landlord had absolutely no understanding that we can make rent. Somehow we made it for like 15 months until I got a job again. I made a lot of debt during this time. But what exactly should we do. You need a place to live and not anybody can move to their parents or something like this.

Everyone talks about how shitty landlords are but never how based some landchads can be.
When I was in college, my landchad was super forgiving if I was a few days late every now and then because I regularly paid rent early if finances weren't tight. He also made sure any work orders that were needed were done ASAP even if he had to get his hands dirty and do it himself.

In a post about the horrors of communism I talked about how my ancestors in communist China were beaten to death, refused the right to education, and called “bad blood scum” for their whole life for being the _children_ of “landlords”, aka peasants who could barely feed themselves in a time of poverty. Guess what replies I got?

Idk what to say. My ancestors were probably 1000x less rich than the average American. They ate nothing but cabbage and potatoes all winter. They made 1 garment from scratch each year and patched all clothes until they fell apart. My grandmother has stunted growth from 3 years of *starvation* in the great famine. My own ancestors were landed barons in what is now Uttar Pradesh, India. During the Mutiny of 1857, my family was fairly respected by both sides, and as a result, their lands were left largely untouched. When the mutiny came to their area, both the British troops and the Mutineers had a habit of terrorizing the locals. My family let Indian and British refugees from the surrounding countryside seek asylum on their lands and wait out the Mutiny there. After it was over, their actions reached the British Court and they received a letter from Queen Victoria herself thanking them for their actions.
Being a landowner doesn't automatically make you a bad person. Yes, many landowners are shitty, scummy, skeevy people and they deserve every ounce of hate that they deserve. But many landowners are good, decent people who will go above and beyond for their tenants. Its not black and white.
The reality is, in a healthy economy, landowners do fulfill an important purpose. Property is a very unique economic asset. It is always in high demand like standard commodities, but it is very expensive to produce and it cannot be parceled out as easily. Once a home is built, if you buy it, you are buying the full house and the surrounding land. The reality is, there is always a small pool of people who possess the economic means to be able to afford a house. As a result, if it was such that leasing out property was not permitted, sooner or later, the supply of houses would dry up because the building and selling of houses is only economically viable when done in large numbers to take advantage of economies of scale. But it would not be viable to build one hundred houses if only 5 people are able to afford them.
Landlords provided an intermediary solution. By fronting the capital necessary to purchase the land, they were then able to pass those houses off to people who need the home but cannot necessarily afford to purchase it outright, taking a fractional fee, i.e. rent, for their trouble. Landlords effectively give access to the property market to those who cannot afford to participate in it.
The problem becomes when this is left unchecked and everyone with money is buying property and renting it out such that those who would possess the means to purchase a house can no longer do so. This opens the door to all the shady practices that we see now.
What is needed is not a blanket ban on landlords, but also not the unchecked property spiral that we see today. What we need is a balance, perhaps a limit on how many homes you can hold for example, zoning rules on where rental properties can be built and what sort of properties can be rented out. Oversight on landlords. There is no perfect solution, and I do not claim to have that solution. But the reality is not black and white. That's what I'm trying to say.

As a landlord I have no idea wtf this secret algorithm is supposed to be. I wish I had one because when we got a person who did drugs in one of the apartments she made life hell for the other tenant's. After going through the exhaustive process of kicking her out we had to redo the entire apartment. All of which meant we made zero money while pissing off the decent renters who want to live in peace.

It's such a hard job landlords have. Having to own property and add more 0s to the monthly rent every hour is super stressful.
I remember this one story my uncle told me about the time he had to WALK over to a tenant's apartment and tell him he was 2 dollars and 4 cents short on rent and that he would be charging a 60% increase on rent from that point on. I don't know how my uncle continues to be a landlord despite the amount of labor he has to put in.

@Sam Myerowitz because the walls were so thin you could have casual conversations with your neighbours (intentionally done so you could hear if anyone is saying bad shit about the government) the pipes were bad and the water was toxic, you had an electricity curfew, it was cold, to the point were people would tape the windows up in winter, and you couldn't easily move unless you had connections
And that's just the apartments, I won't go into lack of food and other restrictions

This video has convinced me to become a landlord.
If you do, check your possible tenants' socials before making a decision on renting to them. Look for subtle signs, like them posting about eating landlords or joining in with riots and burning down small businesses or breaking into ATMs to fund their drug habits or their funkopop collection. Those will be the more "interesting" difficult ones that I recommend not renting to.
Then be careful who you rent to! Believe me, you have no idea what you're getting yourself into. Someone once stole the kitchen from my apartment when he was moving out! He literally ripped out the KITCHEN and took it with him! Even cables and pipes were damaged and in the end I was left with all the costs.

I'm actually really fortunate to have a nice older couple as landlords. I had some tough times after my dad passed away and they were very kind and understanding.

No. What you described doesn't happen. Landlords buy property to charge more than it costs to extract surplus value. That's what they do. No landlord gets into the game to help people.
They may opt to gouge less than other landlords, but at the end of the day, their entire goal is to sell a product for more than they are paying.
Thus preventing someone who wanted to buy that property to live there from buying it.

Regardless... Landlords don't do their job out of kindness. This is an obvious fact, but their entire business model relies on being better than house sellers. Anyone who actively does housing work, either in the renting or selling department will tell you that renting is cheaper, easier, and safer, if they don't they're lying or they're in a very expensive area.
Not all Landlords are nice of course, but as someone who actively works with both people who help sell houses and landlords, someone who owns several properties including a house I bought last year, and someone who works in an economically driven business (I work in production of materials, furniture, and do repairs), I can promise you that landlords, at least in the west.
And so what if someone wants to buy a house? 84% landlords offer up their properties within 2 years of buying it, just pick a better spot or offer to buy it, its in a landlords interest to sell a house they're renting out. Even then mortgage exists, so have fun renting several decades after you purchase the place

I’m a landlord, and let me tell you, it’s not the fun and money people seem to think it is. First off, finding renters is a headache. Now I know what you’re going to say - bullshit, there is never any housing available, renters are everywhere. True. But good renters are rare. So rare that I’ve reduced rent for good renters to keep them from moving.
The most obvious renter problem is that so many treat the property like a public bathroom. It should be free, and sure we will wreck it just because. Shockingly, while rent is more voluntary than ever, real estate taxes aren’t. Not to mention other expenses like sewer, water, power, etc. When I started renting out homes, I renovated them myself (I’m an electrician) and made the mistake of paying for the heating. People would just turn the heat up to max and leave it like that while gone, or open windows, just didn’t care.
Then you have the destruction. I put beautiful hard wood floors in a small family house. The renters would just move furniture by sliding it around, gouging the floor to hell and back. People would spill stuff on carpets and just leave it. Many more examples.
Collecting rent was a nightmare, as well. I’m a reasonable person, and that’s not good for landlords. People would just lie to my face about the rent, or simply refuse and live there wrecking the home until I went through the exhausting and expensive eviction process. Several renters never paid for nearly a year, and I’d get them out only to find they wrecked the house. I never bothered trying to get the money back for that.
At one point I had 5 properties for rentals, and only two had good renters in them. Both were older couples with children grown up. I sold the other three properties and said fuck it. If and when my two renters move, I’ll sell those properties too. I spent so much money on rentals that I made next to nothing, and if you factor in the time and effort, I made less than minimum wage. I’m better off just flipping properties and working my main job, where I come to work and get to leave it at the end of the workday without worry. It’s a guaranteed 110 an hour as opposed to playing babysitter and parenting ostensible adults for less than 5 bucks an hour with renters.
