Razor. You introduced me to the shadow with you Embrace Pulp Video and as of writing this I now have collected at least 25 of the shadows stories and I only wanted to write this and say thank you for the great recommendation. The shadow is now my new favorite superhero!

(Reposting this from another video in part to help with the RUclips algorithm)
I just discovered your "Reject Modernity. Embrace Pulp Heroism" video the other day and have since binged watched the majority of your videos concerning the topic, as well as many others. I just wanted to say "Thank you" from the bottom of my heart for all the time and hard work you've poured into these subjects, and for vocalizing what I've been unable to for years. And for adding to my growing list of material to watch, read, and listen to.
It's because of you that I'm listening to "The Shadow" radio dramas with my grandmother (who is giddy to be listening to the radio shows of her childhood), and why I'm diving deeper into pulp than I already was. You also reminded me of The Rocketeer and Sojourn, and I plan on getting their collections soon. I'm a writer who enjoys more classic media than modern, and I also have values, morals, and ideas that don't lineup with mainstream media. Thank you for giving me hope that I'll find my audience. I'm still just a fanfiction writer, but I hope to become a published author just like yourself in the near future. God bless, and have a wonderful day.

If they ever re-print the Shadow stories again, They better print them in the proper order they were written.
It was really bizarre that The Living Shadow was paired with The Black hush, A story written much later.

Reading "The Golden Quest", it's another great example of a slow start with incredible pay off. It simply starts with a man receiving inheritance, a conman trying to buy said inheritance, and a sleazy bar were thugs discuss rumors of mobsmen coming back into town.
The first action scene is where all these elements come together in a 1930's gunfight, an shows up after 4 or 5 chapters

About time you uploaded one of these! I listened to the black master and found myself astonished at the fact it was basically the later overarching plot to the Dark Knight! It's nuts!
Also Walter B. Gibson in the later part of his life I think started to write hoo-haa spiritual books for the money I feel but also I think his wife who was a believer had something to do, I forget who the person being interviewed was but If I recall he was one of the last few men to have met and befriended Walter in his life, he was on a podcast.

"A complaint is that it's a slow start"
Isn't that how most mysteries work? You're supposed to piece things together as the Shadow does, while he's also always a step or two ahead of you the whole way through.
Also I didn't think Zerndorf was obviously the villain. I thought he was being set up as a new agent before the twist. Only with hindsight did the seeds of the twist become apparent to me. It might be something a bit expected because of the people ripping off this story in the years since, but taking the story in context I think it worked

Don't sell yourself short, I've enjoyed your audiobooks more then I did the 4 or 5 audible made. You've also done the best radio episode recreations available and these podcasts are fun and i always learn something I didn't know. Keep up the good work! Oh and have you heard anything about what's next for The Shadow after the rather disappointing release of the Patterson book? That radio episode with the aliens I believe was Death is Just Around the Corner 1-21-45 a lost episode, but it was remade in Australia as Out of This World.

Thanks once again for an excellent episode. I always love learning the details behind both the pulps and the radio series. I remember hearing once that when it came to the Shadow radio series, there were four words that were likely to show up in the titles: MURDER, DEATH, KILL and GHOST. Trying to find a Shadow radio title without one of those words is a bit like Where's Waldo?
One other thing I would like to mention. It's true that real supernatural events rarely were used in the radio series. However, there was one Bret Morrison episode called "Death Prowls At Night" where an Eastern European doctor was able to "change into a wolf". It sounded more like a shapeshifter than a werewolf story, but The Shadow did not give a rational explanation for the doctor's ability.

I need to get back into listening to the Shadow radio plays. When I was a kid, my folks would pick up at gas stations cassettes of the old Suspense show for listening when we were on long road trips.
Many famous actors of the era used to play parts. Vincent Price is a major one that sticks out. Definitely got hooked on old radio shows and audiobooks from those shows.

I got a cool find of the first dhadow magazine collection from 1942 or whatever it was, which while not in the best condition, also is coming with 2 unopened vinyls of the radio show, and for 40 bucks. Felt pretty dang good with that find. I don't need perfect mint condition, even if worn and aged, the Shadow is always worth a grab~
That said, will be waiting on the proper reprints as I dont want to gouge my wallet, especially these days.

The Black Master is one of the pulps I'd adapt for a Film adaptation. The opening bombings would make a perfect opening to a film. However, I would probably adapt it as the sequel, whereas the first film should adapt a story like Gangdom's Doom or Mobsmen on the Spot

Completed reading Doc Savage: Ring of Fire and need to read some more Shadow. Congrats on your new pulp and hope it becomes a bigger success. You feel you are getting better as a writer? Has the praise and criticism of your previous work affected how you plan out your stories in the future? I would like to write a story myself one day. Good luck and Godspeed!

The feedback didn't really weigh in. I listened to my editors, for sure, but for the most part, I could see what I wanted to improve just reading the first story.
We'll see if that worked or if I'll need more feedback when people read the new one. All you can do is work your hardest, improve what you can, avoid shortcuts, and deliver a product you can be proud of when it's done. How it's received is up to the reader. And even then, positive or negative feedback from your audience only matters to a point.

I think the ubiquity of "evil German doctor whose hubris is their only weakness" across fiction since left me a bit disappointed with the supervilain part, especially after the super strong opening.
I prefer the more crime fighter/investigation elements as these are a breath of fresh air after having had my fill of superheroes.

Can we rename Seance of death to "Lemon Pledge of Death"? Consuela sounds absolutely like the family guy Mexican maid abuelita, all she needs is to say "no no" and we can claim Seth McFarlane stole something from the shadow.

Speaking of comics stealing from the shadow, Vandal Savage was ripped off from one of the Shadow's 'lost' episodes.

It should also be noted that the Pyramid reprint of this story has cover art btyJim Steranko.
What I found interesting about The Black Master is that it was written a decade before NYC would get an actual mad bomber terrorizing its streets.
Personally I think blacks ending was a little weak compared to The Red Menace just based on how the villain ends up in the end. Still one of the stronger pulps and now I gotta read through The Mobsmen on the Spot and Hands in the Dark before next time.

Sad as it is to say, in today's world I don't see physical printing for the shadow coming again. I'd live with better digital access, especially in audiobook form. Audible seems full of pulp like stories, fill it with some more Shadow and less "life is now a video game and I have a harem" crap.
