I picture the Shadow's face as one of those disfigured civil war soldiers, where the features are distorted to almost unhuman and corpselike resemblance, made even more ghastly by their attempt to replicate normal facial actions. A horrific version of the uncanny valley reaction.

Hey Razor, I’d love to see a episode (or a special) about Doc Savage (maybe if you ever get to “The Golden Vulture.”). It would be interesting to learn more of the history between these two titans of adventure fiction, with the more I know of them, the more confidence I have in writing my own Pulp characters.

I have my Nostalgia Ventures reprint #17 on the docket. Doc Savage and The Spider as well.
Also, I wonder if he would like to weigh in on the recently published Doc Savage novel from James Patterson. Surely a similar fate as The Shadow, maybe beating a dead horse, but it's another titan of the hero pulps surely being dragged through the mud.

I've been hanging around here for quite a while now, having found your channel when looking for any possible audio readings of the Shadow pulps. I have got to say, I just ADORE your Shadowcast!! I have loved The Shadow novels since I was about 15 or so? When that first double reprint, The Golden Vulture & Crime Insured, came out, & I have been head over heels for the Knight of Darkness ever since! I've always felt pretty alone in my passion, especially since so few folks anywhere near my age (or otherwise for that matter!) knew anything about The Shadow pulps, let alone were a fan of them. To have something of an outlet to geek out over this brilliant character has been fantastic!! Thank you for keeping The Shadow alive! (Have to mention that as I type this, my replication painting of the Hidden Death cover peers at me from across my studio. :) Definitely a favorite piece of mine!)

The Spawn movie that Todd McFarlane wants to do is from the POV of other characters, with Spawn presented as more of a mysterious figure.
If something like that is successful, it could lead to The Shadow film or series being presented as such too.

15:29 I believe that whether by hypnosis or by prosthetics, The Shadow has basically put his face in the uncanny valley. So everyone who sees him knows there's something off about his face even if they can't put their finger on it. What works about that interpretation is that you can easily rationalize that we as the readers never actually get to see what his "real face" looks like and when he's not out Shadowing he can put on the mask of Lamont Cranston or anyone else and nobody would be the wiser. Kinda like the original version of Clayface from Batman.

I think the best shadow movie or show would have multiple actors playing the shadow. Perhaps even completely different actors from one episode to another. Also, have the actors show up in the show as a different character with speaking lines while the shadow is in the episode with them just to mess with the audience.

Like if the Question put a false face over his none face giving him an extra layer of disguise. Allowing him to disappear into a crowd by removing the whole thing revealing a face almost no one has see.

The idea that to have extensive experience of evil you must have committed evil is such an obnoxious trope. The Shadow has plenty of experience from fighting evil all around the world.
The other thing that gets missed a lot is that the Shadow, while utterly ruthless to criminals (forcing a poisoner to knowingly drink his own poison comes to mind), is extremely compassionate to the innocent. I always enjoy his interactions with characters like Betty in 'Hands in the Dark'. On the same note, one of my favorite scenes has the Shadow, already wounded from a previous battle with crooks, nearly get himself caught by trying desperately to revive a gas victim while the police are battering down the door.
Scenes of the Shadow gunning down hordes of gangsters not withstanding, when it comes down to it, the Shadow is more concerned with saving innocent lives than striking down the guilty. (Of course, being The Shadow, he usually manages both.) He frequently abandons his plans to go rescue his agents (he's even surrendered himself in exchange for their safety). On several occasions he has even offered to let villains go free in exchange for the safety of their victims. (Not that they ever take him up on that offer.)
Turning the Shadow into either a psychotic 'Punisher' type character or a dark, tormented soul is a huge mistake.

Wasn't Kent Allard's faace supposed to be injured as an allusion to soldiers in WW1 coming home disfigured?

Good to have a new episode again and welcome to all the new Shadow and pulps fans here. I wanted to ask you if you read any of the Avenger? I'll get it once i'm done with The Little Sister by Raymond Chandler. Godspeed!
Also Allard is also an Old English and French name meaning, 'Noble and Brave'. It has other variations from different parts of Europe so it may be a way to disguise his actual nationality if so it's a nice touch.

I do believe he is a bit of a face shapeshifter. Most likely because of his powers he got, maybe not because he was so disfigured, or ofc we could go with the angle of him being indeed scarred from war etc. He might be like a Clayface from Batman like he experimented with the Dagget Industries products, well figuratively speaking it could be this angle too.

Very nice way to kick off the New Year -- thanks again Razor'!
I think we're in accord about this early version of The Shadow (as Will Murray put it, the "preternatural Shadow") -- "mystique" is the perfect descriptor. It's my favorite period for the character.
Regarding The Shadow's "horror face" (as Gibson called it), my personal head-canon runs similarly to his later speculation: serious facial disfigurement sustained during WWI, thus necessitating a need for mastering the art of disguise, later receiving reconstructive surgery to repair the damage, just in time to make a public return to civilization as "Kent Allard."
As far as the '94 movie goes, have to admit I HATED it when it was released; I actually walked out of it in anger (the friends that were with me tried teasing me at first, until they saw how mad I was!). It's grown (mildly) in my estimation since then, but not by much. One thing about it that I do find intriguing is the notion of his formerly being a "bad dude" who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of Men -- definitely gives The Shadow a unique dimension.
Finally, if a new film/TV series ever gets attempted, my thought has been for a while that a different actor be cast for every role "The Shadow" assumes -- have them all be of similar physical stature and build, of course. Each time we see said different actor, the visual indicator for the audience would be the girasol ring.
    Thoughts?...

I had similar ideas for a Shadow show for HBO. It stars Harry Vincent on his first job, and the Shadow is only a voice and occasionaly seen in no detail. The idea is you play expecations against the fans so Cranston and Allard are there, suspected, but then it seems impossible for them to be the Shadow. Then you claim he's any other number or people like the mayor or police chief (even Margo Lane if you want to get cheeky), even a proto Voodoo Master sugests it's Harry himself with multiple personalities. All are wrong and the answer is said to not be important.

I'm gonna give my take on what The shadows face like, my theory has always been he looks like nothing but barely skin and the frame of his bone and he probably looks like Odo from DS9 on season 1 where he barely looks human but he's got the frame work for a face going on until he's just an actual identity like Lamont Cranston.
Think about Renee would have been fantastic for the role of the shadow! He'd probably be the man of a million faces on the show. Great video and yes its what blade runner 2049 fanboys fail to understand of why the final cut is superior to the studio cut that implies they drove into the sunset. It's because the question is far more interesting than the answer.

Fully automatic weapons are typically called 'machine guns' or more sometimes more specifically 'tommy guns'. It doesn't seem like a 'mistake', rather a colloquialism that changed over time as semi-automatic pistols became more prevalent. Nowadays if you refer to 'pistol' or 'hand gun', it's generally assumed you mean a semi-automatic, unless you specify revolver.
