Where I grew up (not an American) pulp's been scorned and hardly viewed as part of literature. Many times I was thought a dummy by people for enjoying these kind of stories and the heroes, especially Shadow and Conan.
That's why I love conversations like this. It's rare for me to hear people with so much knowledge and enthusiasm for the pulp genre and Shadow talk.
Thanks for the effort and time you put on Shadowcast, dude.

Holy shit, you asked my question about “modernizing” the Shadow. I do agree with Will how it requires a special touch to modernize a character, like The Shadow, for a modern audience and we can all point to the James Paterson novel as a textbook example of how not to do it. Matt Wagner’s work are a good example of how to modernize him, as far as recent Shadow offerings go.

For a film adaptation I would choose "Crime, Insured" because stories of criminal masterminds attempting to get under the skin of heroes, uncover their secrets and subvert their "routine" seem to captivate and resonate well with audiences.
I too would start with an introduction, maybe the first 15-20 minutes or so refreshing the audience on who The Shadow is and establishing that he's been operating for some years now, viewed through the eyes of Harry Vincent or Margo Lane, before the criminal attempts to turn his world upside down.
The concept of "crime insurance" or similar isn't done very often in mainstream entertainment either, which would further give this film a unique identity. (The last time I remember anything similar in the mainstream was on the "Gotham" TV show when Penguin became mayor and was issuing "crime licenses")
I would perhaps bring in Shiwan Khan or another notable villain at the end to tease the next film as well, (which would be an adaptation of one of their major stories) after referencing them a few times during this film, maybe even tying them to the plot and setting them up as a greater threat.
And of course it would be set in period, that's not even up for discussion.

I just discovered your "Reject Modernity. Embrace Pulp Heroism" video the other day and have since binged watched the majority of your videos concerning the topic, as well as many others. I just wanted to say "Thank you" from the bottom of my heart for all the time and hard work you've poured into these subjects, and for vocalizing what I've been unable to for years. And for adding to my growing list of material to watch, read, and listen to.
It's because of you that I'm listening to "The Shadow" radio dramas with my grandmother (who is giddy to be listening to the radio shows of her childhood), and why I'm diving deeper into pulp than I already was. You also reminded me of The Rocketeer and Sojourn, and I plan on getting their collections soon. I'm a writer who enjoys more classic media than modern, and I also have values, morals, and ideas that don't lineup with mainstream media. Thank you for giving me hope that I'll find my audience. I'm still just a fanfiction writer, but I hope to become a published author just like yourself in the near future. God bless, and have a wonderful day.

This is an exceptional podcast which needs more episodes. I have already listened through what's available several times over.
You are a host who gives me hope. I spent years assuming that I was alone in being a fan of the pulps and especially The Shadow. I believed that I would be forever alone on a doomed sea of garbage culture, clinging desperately to the life-raft that is the precious media of the past. It is very good and extremely comforting to know that we are many and we all seem to give a considerable damn.

My god! I've never thought about it that way! In that the 2 dimensional characters like the punisher are suppose to be like that because someone made them that way! Because there not really characters as much as vessels for an idea and the reader to understand! No wonder these characters are timeless! It's because the ideas that manifested them are prevalent in society forever!

Thanks for another great episode and a wonderful interview with Will Murray. The amount of new information I keep learning about The Shadow just never ends with your podcast.
I have a quick story to share. I was fortunate enough to get to go to the "special edition" Comic-Con over Thanksgiving weekend and I thought I would wear my "The Shadow Knows" T-shirt. I got more positive comments wearing that shirt than any other T-shirt I wore to any convention. Every comment from "that is badass" to "did you get it here at the convention?" But the best part was someone asked me if I knew anything about the new Shadow book by James Patterson. I said that I have it under the best authority (being The ShadowCast) that the book is terrible.

Regarding the Isle of Doubt cover, I think it was supposed to be the cover for 'The Road of Crime', published 2 months later. Here's an excerpt from The Road of Crime:
'Burke had been deputed to keep track of Carma Wellerton. He learned that she was living under the name of Carma Urstead, and that she was still in New York.
Communication ended with his contact agent, The Shadow performed a new action. His hands produced a large map and spread it on the table. The fingers placed tiny pins upon towns marked there - the places where small bank robberies had been attempted.'

'The Radio Detectives' on BBC Radio 4 Extra had an episode on The Shadow last week. It's only half an hour long so doesn't go too deep but it might be of interest to those looking for an overview. I believe people outside the UK should be able to listen without an account, I know I can when I set my VPN to the USA.

Shangri La is a fictional idyllic place in central Asia; Xanadu is a poetic spelling of Shangdu, the capital of Kublai Khan empire described as an idyllic place. Is no big deal to mix up the names when both refer to fictional places in the mountains of central Asia.

Great episode with you and Mr Murray and will have to do some research and obtain his book on the subject of The Shadow. My question to you now since he had a peak of popularity unparalleled in his heyday in his native U.S, what was his influence in other countries around the world? A Bande Dessinee of the Shadow would be such a great recreation of the Shadow like they did with the three (hopefully four) Elric books. Well done on the interview and hope you get a chance for more Shadow writer episodes in the future. Godspeed.

Btw, duende is spanish for elf (like Santa's, not Tolkien), I googled Duende magazine and hipster/sjw publications came up. Yikes.
