I'll admit I'm unfamiliar with Doc Savage but a tv show of a buff adventurer exploring the world might be a hard sell to this supes heavy industry. Hope I'm wrong. Would you do a Enter Doc Savage for the uninitiated like me in the future? Keep up the good work.

Thank you for another great podcast. I was fortunate enough to find all 12 issues at various comic shops during the mid-90's and eventually, I got Denny O'Neil to sign issue #1 years later at Comic-con.
As for casting The Shadow for a new movie or TV show, I'd love to see Jim Caviezel or Kyle Chandler tackle it.

The reason Condé Nast made very little money from the Reprints, other than sharing it with Walter Gibson's estate, was because Condé Nast didn't distribute the reprints to regular stores. They were pretty much impossible to find over here in the UK. I've had to resort to eBay mostly to find what I can and at good prices.

Just because he has a big beak (that isn't in the correct shape, or even straight), doesn't mean he's good for the part. Stern eyes and strong cheek bones are need too. Also his tough voice was pretty goofy. And what would be the point of him putting muscle for a character that always wears a suit and a cloak? Not that he looked significantly muscular in that garbage predator movie, but still pointless. And f hollywood actors ruining good characters.

using the ninja trope for an explanation on the shadows skills made sense in the era it was presented, many readers of this 12 issue series may not have known of his radio powers or pulp intelligent agent skills so those just being introduced to the character his skills would make sense. in the avenger cross over Kahn orders his men to fire I believe 5 feet to the left of the image they see it was as if the shadow could project an image of himself to misdirect his foes.

*_Sam Witwer_* would be a SOLID pick for The Shadow/Lamont/Kent. He's got the voice, he's got the look, he's got the _respect_ for source material like this (I don't know if he knows much about the Shadow, but he has repect for classic storytelling and pulp-inspired material.) As long as he is given the director's note that The Shadow isn't about brooding and pathos and _EmOtIoN_ and kept on that path of just raw badassery and _enjoyment_ of bringing justice, he should be fine.
He could totally pull off the White-Hat/Black-Hat 'Evil unto Evil-doers' where he arguabley does 'bad things' but you never doubt him as a _HERO_ bringing Justice.
*_Ben Feldman_* is another guy I would want to see get a shot at playing in this world too. He might be bit too _pretty_ and jovial to be The Shadow himself, but I could picture him as a great fit for one of The Shadow's agents, like Harry Vincent.
Adam Driver is the reasonable IT choice for Lamont with how hot he is in Hollywood the past year, his typically more indy choices of productions, and _his _*_nose._*_ let's be honest._

I always wanted to hear Michael Wyncott as The Shadow. I loved his voice of Death in Darksiders 2, people say he was either too expensive or too old for his cameo in Darksiders 3 but for those of us who remember him from Westworld, I think he still got it. Mind you I said a voice of the Shadow and not THE Shadow since the role of Lamont Cranston could go to another actor, Adrien Brody.
The nose, the height and the acting track record could help the show itself to have some legitimacy and with Wyncott as the Shadow, it would dignify the production to be taken seriously.
As for how the show should be carried on, I think it should be focused on the agents and their relationship to the Shadow, I've read too many Dynamite comics where they try to have his own voice narrate the whole thing and in my view, it doesn't work. The Shadow must be kept as an enigma and yes, Cranston can be part of it, but I wish the show would focus more on Harry Vincent and Clyde Burke to show how the streets of New York were in those times. Valorie Curry as Margo Lane, her classical beauty and her moxie are good attributes to bring to the character.

I don't mind casting new people for the roles of the agents.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I actually like the agents of the Shadow from the O'Neill era, in fact, I like that Harry Vincent, he could be an evolution of the character. After trying to commit suicide and finding a new purpose with The Shadow, "he don't care 'bout no hoes no more" and becomes a fully committed agent to the cause of the dark avenger. Every one of these issues was fun in its own way.
I would really like you to interview more people that worked in the Shadow, like Uslan, Dennis Calero, Aaron Campbell etc. There were some oneshots that were really interesting like Veterans of a Foreign War by Scott Beatty and Ronan Cliquet, the Agents of the Shadow by Michael Moreci and Anthony Marquez that surprises me why they weren't given full series and they agreed giving Spurrier a full series that to this day I refuse to read.

Honestly I think this might fall under the category of "be careful what you wish for." After seeing the race-swapping, gender-bending way in which beloved IPs of the past have been bastardized by Hollywood in the past 10 years I'm not sure I want them raping The Shadow. The latest Bond film is an apostasy, Indiana Jones has been utterly ruined, Thor is set to take a backseat to his girlfriend, etcetera ad nauseum.

Oh Razor I thought of an idea for a future video if you like to hear it. Would you do a video on Judex? He was considered an inspiration on the Shadow due to his look and having his own squad of ex criminals. Also thoughts on Dennis Lynds work on the Shadow? Godspeed.

    • @TheShadowcast
      @TheShadowcast  4 года назад

For a lot of reasons, Judex can't have been the inspiration for The Shadow:
-He wasn't translated into English until the '60s
-His serials received extremely limited US play, and there's no record of them playing in New York City (where Walter Gibson lived).
      -He didn't use two-fisted automatics
-The tone of Judex is completely different, with a lighthearted appeal that contrasts with The Shadow's mysterioso pulp atmosphere.
But it would be an interesting topic, for sure. When The Shadow newspaper strip was printed in France, they even changed the name to Judex (much to the confusion of French readers)

The Shadowcast I think it should be kinda like that graphic novel “Joker” by Brian Azzarello where Batman never actually shows up or is even mentioned, but constantly felt in the background until his inevitable reveal in the end. Very much a shadow conceit that dc swiped, and I think would work much better in a shadow story.

Oh man, the fact that the Helfer/Sienkiewicz run got a reprint and yet neither the O'Neil/Kaluta run nor The Shadow Strikes! did is an absolute crime against the character, really. Not just because I like the latter two and dislike the former, but also because both O'Neil/Kaluta and The Shadow Strikes! are way better representative of what Shadow is all about.
On the TV series news - I'm cautiously optimistic. You never know how these turn out, but if there is to be an actual wave of Shadow products (which pulling the comic and pulp rights suggests), there's bound to be good stuff in there somewhere. And it seems like Conde Nast is not fussing about this time around - the Sanctum reprints started out all the way back in 2006 and there were rumors of a new Shadow movie thing throughout all these years yet they only now pulled the plug on the whole reprint thing, which indicates that whatever they got's either already in the oven or at least that they are taking this one way more seriously than before, which is a good thing in my book.

A Shadow series on literally any major streaming service will be a complete fail. IF it doesn't go full woketard sojus right off (Picard, Witcher, etc.), if it's on Netflix it won't live past its second season, because every Netflix show from an acquired property generally has a strong first season but an abysmal second season and subsequent cancellation.
At best we can expect one good season on Netflix. But the chances of it being any good at all are slim.

This is my fear exactly. Plus depending upon how shoestring the budget is, it's unlikely they would keep him in the 1930s because the pricetag for each episode would explode. Which means a modern day Shadow and I hate "modern day" Shadow iterations.
