I served as an official with the New Mexico State Athletic Commission alongside of Bob. He was a lot of fun, and beneath that serious exterior was a very playful and kind hearted man! I attended his funeral when we had to say "so long" to my friend.
Best doc I've seen on The Sheriff, like for so many of Rich's documentaries. A solid hour of info and action. Great stuff once again. I wish every boxing fan anywhere knew this fabulous channel.

Bob Foster was a deputy sheriff. To my knowledge, the only boxer who became an actual Sheriff was Jersey Joe Walcott. Joe was the first African American to serve as the elected Sheriff of Camden County, NJ. As usual, a fantastic video!

The Tiger stoppage, with the image of a heretofore indestructible warrior helpless on the canvas remains a shock to this day. I was at the old Springfield Coliseum for Kendall fight, an afternoon Wide World event with Howard Cosell. Foster fought there one other time against Charlie Polite. I lost track of him after retiring. Thanks for filling me in. This was an all time great. A dream match would have been Foster vs Archie Moore. Thanks again Rich. My Saturday morning is off to a great start.
You do good films and it’s interesting and entertaining to look back and profile the lives of Boxers. I really hope that young boxers watch some of your films to help them understand what professional boxing is all about.
@@RichtheFightHistorian when I was a teenager and training I wanted to fight like Dempsey by copying his style when one day the elder old trainer came in and watched me on the bags and sparring and said I was like a young white Bob Foster, when at the time I didn’t realise how much of a compliment it was. Sadly I was nothing like him or Dempsey in the ring but when you’re young you believe you could be, ha.

Bob was probably the best light heavy ever-a victim of his own success, really. No other light heavy could touch him, and he just ran out of people to fight at his natural weight. He was forced to fight the bigger guys for the bigger pay checks!

Foster was such a wrecking machine at light heavyweight-but fighting Ali and Frazier was too tall of an order for a light heavy built like Bob-the Frazier fight is like if Tommy Hearns fought Dave Tua. Great video and learned a lot on why Bob Foster was so feared at light heavy.

I love Bob Foster!! Absolutely one of the best light heavyweights ever to reign. He had that same build and musculature as Tommy Hearns and was truly “the hit man “ before Hearns. Make no mistake, a wiry guy with a big punch is dangerous and hard to fight. The mention that he was considered as an opponent for Floyd Patterson is very interesting. Too bad it never happened. Not sure which way it would have gone, but watching him against Dick Tiger (and Floyd’s chin) kind of makes me feel like I actually have seen it. I always thought Ali’s win over him was not particularly satisfying. Frazier’s was definitive and the only time I’ve ever seen Foster truly KOd. Foster would have gone broke if I had a Time Machine. Because I’d tell everyone in the light heavyweight division to definitely not fight this guy. It’s kinda funny to me that these old time boxing announcers like Don Dunphy, compared him to Bob Fitzsimmons. Could there be a less relevant fighter? The difference today is that the best fighters don't give us fights of the year consistently as they did in the past ala Tyson, Holyfield, Leonard, Hearns, etc etc. That Finnegan fight was a classic and you only get fights like that when guys face the absolutely best competition and take big chances in those fights. Joshua and Alvarez are the only two true superstars today who do this consistently.
An all-time great who could've been even greater had he stuck exclusively to the Light heavyweight division instead of dabbling in the heavyweight division, where almost all his losses came from.

It always drives me crazy when I see someone clearly unconcious and the ref gives a count instead of ending the fight and letting someone attend to the fighter. The worst one I can remember was when it happened to Joe Walcott

I'm collating a lot of my old boxing magazines and am looking for an old Boxing Illustrated article on Charles that had a lot of pics on him. As soon as I come across it, I'll do a piece on him.
People can be that inept, let's assume that cornerman was in an state of panic seeing Mike flatlined and was thus clumsier than usual, that's an easier to believe possibility than someone from his own corner bashing his head against the canvas intentionally.

Imo hardest p4p puncher in history. One shot kayoes of otherwise iron chinned Tiger and Mike Quarry are the stuff of legend. Vicente Rondon went 10 with Earnie Shavers, what Foster did to him inside 2 should have been illegal. Most knockouts in boxing don't actually leave men unconscious, his routinely did.
You dont see fighters make those movements anymore. When they are dipping over their hips. James toney was the last guy i saw who did that. Everybody is so stiff and upright today.

When trainers say come back with the left hook, think Sherrif Bob Foster, who did it consistently. A great puncher at 175lbs.

It always drives me crazy when I see someone clearly unconcious and the ref gives a count instead of ending the fight and letting someone attend to the fighter. The worst one I can remember was when it happened to Joe Walcott
Tommy Hrarns had the similar style...Foster was a great combination puncher with brutal power and would have been scary to fight against I think.
Would have been interesting to see Foster against the crop of lightheavys that came along in the late 70s early 80s. Saad Muhammad, Dwight Qawi, Marvin Johnson, Galindez and later Michael Spinks.

People can be that inept, let's assume that cornerman was in an state of panic seeing Mike flatlined and was thus clumsier than usual, that's an easier to believe possibility than someone from his own corner bashing his head against the canvas intentionally.

Imo hardest p4p puncher in history. One shot kayoes of otherwise iron chinned Tiger and Mike Quarry are the stuff of legend. Vicente Rondon went 10 with Earnie Shavers, what Foster did to him inside 2 should have been illegal. Most knockouts in boxing don't actually leave men unconscious, his routinely did.

You dont see fighters make those movements anymore. When they are dipping over their hips. James toney was the last guy i saw who did that. Everybody is so stiff and upright today.
