Quick comment on this. Usually one should use paragraph styles, not character styles. The use of character styles is reserved for when you need to apply specific changes to a particular string of text within a paragraph. Say, when you want a particular sentence to be italicized or a word in a different color.
That right!
correct! he has to take down the vid
Unfortunately, you're teaching people a dangerously wrong method of using character styles. It's a very bad practice to apply character styles to an entire paragraph. That's what paragraph styles are for, not character styles (which should be applied to just a word or phrase inside a paragraph). For more information please see: indesignsecrets.com/dont-apply-character-styles-to-an-entire-paragraph.php
I agree Paragraph Styles are in hindsight, technically the correct way to go for formatting paragraphs. Although, I've thankfully never had any issues using Character Styles for projects in InDesign over the last 10 years. Each to their own I guess :)
Well, if you only work on your own files, and they're relatively short (like an ad or a small brochure), then I suppose "to each their own" may be true. But if you have to send your files to another InDesign user, you should be prepared for them to start calling you names behind your back… and you're working on documents longer than a few pages, then oh my gosh, I hope you're paid by the hour. :-)
Yea longer documents that may involve other people (eg. magazines) would definitely benefit from using Paragraph Styles instead.
Thank you for this. This was the most straightforward tutorial. No fluff, just facts. Thank you!
Is it possible to specify a dropped capital and bold for the first paragraph of text in character (or paragraph) styles? I can't see how.
You just earned another subscriber, good sir. I was doing this the complicated way before.
Very nicc tutorial👨🏫📓
you are an incredible person .. so much work and effort is deeply appreciated man.. thank you very much
Thanks so much Abdullah :)
You should use paragraph styles instead
This was very useful for me. Thanks.
Crystal clear and a great voice too! Thank you!
Thank you Danksy. Is there a way to override the character styles if you want the titles to be different colors?
For sure, just change the text format and it will override. Then in the Character Styles panel you'll see a little '+' icon next to the original style, to let you know that you'd made some additional changes to that style.
is there something similar with text boxes or objects in general? like manually assigning boxes to a "object character"?
You are the best! This was exactly what I was looking for, clearly presented, not confusing.
Thank You.. How did anyone dislike this video I don't get some people. Great work and thanks again.
