Didn't work on my Canon 40D. There are a lot of videos like this, and they fall into the same patterns that work for some people and not others. Replace batteries, replace CF card, clean contacts, replace lens, hold shutter button down 15 seconds - all kinds of random-sounding things. I've tried them all, in every order, and it hasn't helped mine come back to life. But I'm really glad yours worked for you, congratulations!
Just come across your video, I had the same problem with my Canon 700D, Followed your instructions and the camera now works again. Thank you, you have saved me a few hundred pounds
You most know that youre my hero! i gave everything i have to buy me a 5d mark ii. and after 3 months of use it were broke after a dead battery. Now its up and running by your trick after 3 days! i am very very exiting and could not be more happier by watching this video! thank you so freaking much!
Wow you are a savior. My T3i canon wasn't turning on for a while, gave up on it after trying so much ways to fix it. Your trick actually made it come on. So weird, thank you so much for sharing.
I've had my 5d Mark ii for about 6 years and no issues. I go to shot on Friday with fresh battery and card and nothing. I figure it was the battery. Took them home, charged and go to shoot on Sat...NOTHING. I ended up following these directions AND now it's working!! Thanks so much for this video 👌👌👌🏆
Good man that's a life saver. Thought I'd no camera for a shoot tomorrow! I had a slightly corrupted image come up a few days again while shooting (all magenta). I was on holidays for a week when that happened. I've since returned home after a flight and going through security etc so not sure it these activities are triggering the anomalies, maybe its just the age of the camera or a combination. I use a 5D Mk3. Thanks again
I just had this same issue with my 5dmk3. I tried everything! but when I watched your video and did all the steps in order, it worked! You are a lifesaver man. Thank you!!
Interesting video John. I have found the same problem several times with my 5d MkIII. Generally I do the following. 1. Check the batteries are fully charged 2. Put the camera in the On position (nothing will happen obviously) 3. Connect it via the USB cable to your laptop 4. Laptop asks for permission to access the new drive you connected 5. Soon as you say yes, the camera should come on. 6. Disconnect the camera and turn it off and on again to make sure it has worked. I think this issue has something to do with the batteries running totally flat - which is when it usually happens to me. So maybe a good cure is don't let them run down that far :-)
This magic? Thanks man it worked like a charm. Even though I tried changing all of those things individually and it wasn't working when I did it exactly like you did in the video it somehow worked 🤯
Hey Went through you're procedure for my humble 550D (after trawling many forums). Just came back to life. Made my weekend. Thanks a lot for taking the time to share the trick!!
hello !!! i did the precess and my t3i turned on . thks god .some day later i was shooting and i changed the lens and my t3i is dead again. i made the same process again but this time wont work. what i have to do ?
Tanks! For a bit of water in my 5D mkII I have receved err 20. Next, err 70 with black display. I was discouraged. Now it works, I hope for a long time.
Hi John: Thank you so much for your post. I have a business photo shoot this Friday and have been trying to get my camera to turn on for the past 24 hours. UGH! After doing a static discharge and then following your directions, the camera turned on. Then it was doing some weird things were I was outside trying to take a picture with the sun out. I had the ISO at 800 (which of course I wouldn't normally do, but at a lower setting it was telling me to use the bulb! Crazy!) So I took the photo anyway and it was totally over exposed. I couldn't get the camera to work without telling me to turn on the bulb. So I just reset all of the camera's settings and kabam, now it works fine! Thanks again for your post & God bless.
Just wanna say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this. I haven't touched my 5D for quite some time and i got surprised that it no longer worked when i tinkered with it today. I panicked and thank God I found this. I wonder though, would you know why it happened/happens?
Absolutly amazing, this fixed my 1DX - I had already replaced the battery but never replaced the memory cards or lens. Doing this revived the camera and not the other lens works fine. I have had this camera for a long time with over 900K shots (one new shutter at 500K) and it has always been reliable as a rock. Any idea why this is required.
You made my morning. Thank you! I am not sure if you have the MKII or I but mine is a II and that worked. I followed your steps and it worked. Thank you! I started thinking about quitting this hobby and such. =) Got all my flashpoint setup and everything and then turned on the camera and UHH! That is what I get for not using it for almost a year. Been switching to film and haven't had to use this old 5d2. Thanks again!
When my Canon 5D Mark II wasn't turning after I had just went out and shot, I just took out the battery and toggled the on and off switch about 10 times. This resets the memory of the camera and it turned back on!
Omg thank you thank you! My little niece dropped my canon DSLR 70D camera and it wouldn't turn on I thought she broke the lens or something cuz the battery was completely full so imagine the frustration. So then I came across ur video although the caption isn't the same model for my camera I figured why not watch anyway u never know and thankfully all I had to do was just take out the sd card then turn the camera on and it worked, didn't have to change diff lens cuz well I don't have a second pair but thank you still for the SD card trick! Appreciate you lol
I'm desperate to know what you think causes these cameras to stop working. Maybe the cf card? My concern is that it happened to me twice in the past week and I need to resolve it without resorting to this bandaid fix. Thanks!
Hi. Thanks for the info video. I can say it also works on older 40D. I don't have 2 lences, but used the protective cap and another sd card. That worked perfect.
THANK YOU BUDDY!! My camera wouldn't turn on and I was literally having a freak out, and I watched your video and fixed my camera!! I would never have figured it out. I actually was going to take out a part that wasn't the problem and stripped a screw trying to get it off, but luckily didn't damage anything. But it was that little thing in the battery door and I put a piece of electrical tape in there and it fixed the problem. Thank you again!!! I am soo glad I watched your video!
Worked for me too, today. Before I found the video I already changed the lens and battery, not the card. When I did what you advised it worked. But I am so anxious to know why this can happen. Can you shed any light on that?
Here is a reply I shared awhile back: Nathan, My best guess is to compare this problem to boot order on a machine with multiple operating systems. As we boot up, change CF cards, and shut down the camera the firmware mounts and dismounts. Along the road maybe we took the CF Card out without shutting down the camera, our battery died, we swapped out the ML CF Card with one that didn’t have it and/or blah blah blah… So when we try to the turn the camera back on it can’t find the ML or Canon firmware. On our computers we can just select the boot order or OS and its smooth sailing. Regrettably, we don’t have that luxury on the Canon so we have to jolt it back to life by using a different lens. Once the two AF confirmation chips align we have new life. Well, I guess after all the hard work we drag the 5D through it deserves a little R&R.
My 5D3 just died while updating the firmware to 1.2.3! I couldn't get it fired back up until watching this video. The lens swap did the trick! Thank you so much!!!
First of all, thanks for the video. I have a 40D that stopped powering on in December. You gave me something new to try. While it didn't work it did lead me to a partial solution. Following your steps but leaving the CF Card Slot empty allows my camera to power back on. But the second I insert any CF card I lose power and the camera will not power on. I've tried different CF cards, I've reformatted the CF card using my PC as FAT32. It just doesn't matter. My camera will not power on while a CF card is inserted. My CF cards work just fine in my 7D though!!! Any idea what might be going on here?
Jose Samora Very intriguing… 1. Try erasing the card on your mac or pc. 2. Then insert it into the camera to see if it can be recognized as unformatted media. 3. If it does just use the camera to reformat. Try the steps with / without the lens/dust cap and let me know what happens.
Yes. One of the poo in was bent. We straightened it out and all was good. I won't be removing the card any more. I will transfer photos through the USB connection from now on.
I've had this camera for about 2 years, and I bought it used. It worked completely fine up until a month or two ago, after I used it extensively for a long video shoot. I know about the 10 min limit for continuous shooting, so I try to keep it cool, but on that occasion i did a lot of "shooting" for nor more than 40 seconds, but did that straight for maybe an hour, shutting it down only a couple times, keeping it mostly in the view finder mode. At the end after i turned it off, it wouldn't turn right back on like it normally did; i figured it was just hot. After more instances of using it, I've experienced some annoying moments where it took time to turn back on. But today especially was rough, I shot for under an hour grabbing a bunch of clips, turned it off, and it would just not turn on. I left it alone for about 15 min, and it turned back on. Also some time before the camera started having power issues, it continued to ask me to re-input the date. Now whenever the camera shuts off, and turns on (when able to) it always asks me for the date. I've read some other help sites, but what would you guys suggest the issue might be, and what can I do to solve it. Obviously the clock battery is something that will need to be changed, but do you think it is something more complicated. I am also an American living in Japan, so going to a repair shop is not impossible just a little bit more complicated as I would have to speak Japanese (not my first language); or sending to a Japanese Canon facility.
Im having the same problem my 5D wont boot up after putting ML Alpha on one of CF cards it boots up fine with the other 2 CLEAN CF cards but not with the ML one what do you suggest? Have I just busted my 16GB Sandisk Extreme PRo?
Stephan, You can use step one,two or both in the order listed. You should be fine unless the card has been corrupted. 1.Format the CF card on your Mac (MS-DOS FAT) or PC. and reinstall ML. 2. Format the card using the camera and reinstall ML.
OMFG - it really worked. was about to cry because my 5D did not boot. Tried this trick (but with same card actually) and it worked. Sorry for everyone who only has one lens xD
Thanks a lot! it worked for me, the key thing is to swap the memory card with another one, or somehow format the one you have. For a minute I was even thinking about getting a new canon but not anymore.
Wow thanks a lot! Camera is working again. Turned out that the SD wouldnt work again in my Eos 1100D. Strange thing is that the pc and my brothers EOS 550D do recognize the card. But your video helped a lot to reset the camera to turn on again!
Thanx bro it worked for me ;-) on my 5d MK2. got really worried why it suddenly wont turn on it dit give battery erron in the vieuwfinder only and on de lcd display but nothing on the large lcd. the cf card swap did the trick. many many thanx you saved my day and not to forget my camera. regards from the Netherlands> Aamir
Hi I have similar problem but with my canon t3i my camera will turn on but the screen is black and only takes black pictures and when ever I try to take a picture this message pops up on the screen that's says "err 30 shooting is not possible due to an error. Turn the camera off and on again or re-install the battery" I have tried to turn the camera off and on again and I have also tried to re-install the battery but it still doesn't work, do you have any ideas on how I can make it work? (Sorry for the long message)
Good morning, I replaced the display to a canon 5d mark 2, when reassembling it the on / off switch no longer went, I reassembled it, disconnected and reconnected the pins again and in reassembling it it did not turn on again, after repeating this procedure 3 times because every time I reassembled some key didn't work. I connected everything correctly, tried to change the memory card, batteries and lens but nothing, not showing signs of life. What can it be? Help me please
thanks for making this video, I just had a huge scare with my sl2 (I know it's the cheapest canon but still...) i just needed to take and put back in the battery a few times, I'm still not quite sure what the problem was, but it's working again. my tripod did fall over about 2 weeks ago, but it was a pretty soft landing. idk!
Holy shit. . . .it worked. I can't explain why, I was the biggest skeptic, but after borrowing cameras for 3 shoots this weekend, and researching having to buy new - I found this video, followed the steps, and I can't explain why it worked, it just did.
There's a small switch inside both the memory card door and the battery door. If your card door is slightly open or if your battery cover or battery grip isn't fully secured then the switch isn't closed and the camera simply won't turn on. Safe bet that it was the card door in this case.
My canon sx170 is won’t on I have put my memory card a label using masking tape though there’s a slight tightness, at first it turn on several times, and the following morning Ive tried to use this as a webcam but when I inserted the macro USB just in the a/v out it just appear in the screen the previous pictures that it is store on my memory card…. And in the following morning I want to get some pictures outside in my house…it didnt turn on, I did charged my battery and check it the reading is 4volts, I have remove the memory card and try it again, it didn’t turn on… Huhuhu please help me… I love this camera so much!!!!! Thank hoping for a reply thanks
Thank you sir, I owe you a HUGE debt of gratitude. Mine did exactly what yours did. I have two shoots tonight and I'm always nervous about not having both my bodies with me. My 5D2 is my go to camera and my 5D (classic) is my backup. I hate when things don't work like they should. I was a little skeptical of the method you show here but sure enough, it worked. Thank you so much.
This just happened to me tonight. Was using live mode and my 70D froze, couldn't turn it off. Removed the battery and put it back in and it works now. Since quite a number of Canon models have been affected, do wonder if it is related to the camera firmware. Looking for some document from Canon what is the root cause of this problem.
It worked for me, I didn’t change lens as I only have one. So I just removed the lens (and SD & batt) and put it back on and it worked! I spent so long borrowing my friend’s 800d for ages, but my baby’s back now! 😭
Didn't work on my Canon 40D. There are a lot of videos like this, and they fall into the same patterns that work for some people and not others. I just dug up my old canon 70D that have not been using for at least 4 years, and your method works! Thank you!
Wow you are a savior. My T3i canon wasn't turning on for a while, gave up on it after trying so much ways to fix it. Your trick actually made it come on. So weird, thank you so much for sharing.
Richard Canagasabey no worries man. The T3i is a wonderful camera and it shoots beautiful footage. I'm glad that you didn't give up on it.

Not a problem, now get back to producing great content.

Thanks, that worked for me! Any idea why it happened? I'm wondering if I should be prepared to send it in for repair soon just in case.
Kelly,
Check the reply to Nathan. You might not want to mention ML when sending it in for repairs.
Thank you soo sooo much brother my Canon 70D didn’t turn on for 3 days but after your video✨🙏🏾🙏🏾
Tanks! For a bit of water in my 5D mkII I have receved err 20. Next, err 70 with black display. I was discouraged. Now it works, I hope for a long time.
Ale P that's good news..

+Leeandrea Campbell why would you use ISO 800 in sunlight?
Just wanna say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this. I haven't touched my 5D for quite some time and i got surprised that it no longer worked when i tinkered with it today. I panicked and thank God I found this. I wonder though, would you know why it happened/happens?
Im so happy to hear that. In most cases a bad connection with the af confirmation chip.
Absolutly amazing, this fixed my 1DX - I had already replaced the battery but never replaced the memory cards or lens. Doing this revived the camera and not the other lens works fine. Rodney moss Thanks for sharing that great tip.
Thank you. It worked perfectly
Thank You So much Rodney. After 7years this remedy worked 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾⚡️
Omg thank you thank you! My little niece dropped my canon DSLR 70D camera and it wouldn't turn on I thought she broke the lens or something cuz the battery was completely full so imagine the frustration. Thank you very much. Your explanation was very clear. My camera works again.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi. Thanks for the info video. I can say it also works on older 40D. I don't have 2 lences, but used the protective cap and another sd card. That worked perfect.
Wow MrGianttusk the protective cap? That's cool man and thanks for sharing.
Thanks a million for this post, i had a music video to shoot and it died. i hit panic stations but this video literally saved my life, cheera
Telly Shop Sweet I'm really happy to have helped. Please share the link to your video when your are done.
Worked for me too, today. Before I found the video I already changed the lens and battery, not the card. When I did what you advised it worked. But I am so anxious to know why this can happen. Can you shed any light on that?
Here is a reply I shared awhile back:
Nathan,
My best guess is to compare this problem to boot order on a machine with multiple operating systems.
It's like software.
Thanks!
My 5D3 just died while updating the firmware to 1.2.3!
I couldn't get it fired back up until watching this video. The lens swap did the trick!
Thank you so much!!!
This has been a stressful day and to top it off my 5D Mark iii wasn't working during shooting. Your tip worked like a charm. Thank you!
thankyou so much, worked for my 60d, seems simple and too good to be true but it worked :)
Thanks same thing with canon 5D Mark2, going crazy now it is working Bless you.
Worked on Canon 5D mark iii. You rock!
Jose Samora I've had the same exact problem with my 7D! did you ever find a solution?
Yes. One of the poo in was bent. We straightened it out and all was good. I won't be removing the card any more. I will transfer photos through the USB connection from now on.
Jose Samora Thanks for the update man. I'm just happy you found a solution and shared it with the group.
Guy, you made my day!! Your trick worked perfectly on my 7D!
Im having the same problem my 5D wont boot up after putting ML Alpha on one of CF cards it boots up fine with the other 2 CLEAN CF cards but not with the ML one what do you suggest? Have I just busted my 16GB Sandisk Extreme PRo?
Stephan,
You can use step one,two or both in the order listed. You should be fine unless the card has been corrupted.
1.Format the CF card on your Mac (MS-DOS FAT) or PC. and reinstall ML.
2. Format the card using the camera and reinstall ML.
I have a 50D with this exact problem and this video saved my day, thank you!!!
That is good news.
OMFG - it really worked. was about to cry because my 5D did not boot. Tried this trick (but with same card actually) and it worked. Sorry for everyone who only has one lens xD
Dude your rock, not sure why this worked, but it did. Awesome brilliant thank you thank you thank you.
Another camera saved! Thank you very much!!
Tried this on my 60d, and it worked. Thank you John.
Thanks a lot! it worked for me, the key thing is to swap the memory card with another one, or somehow format the one you have. For a minute I was even thinking about getting a new canon but not anymore.
Excellent!
I love you dude. Thanks so much. Was almost in tears when it didn't turn on haha
dozar1 I definitely know that feeling.
Wow thanks a lot! Camera is working again. Turned out that the SD wouldnt work again in my Eos 1100D. Strange thing is that the pc and my brothers EOS 550D do recognize the card.
But your video helped a lot to reset the camera to turn on again!
+Sander Buurma Good to hear.
Thank you so much for doing this!!! It worked!!!
Thankyou so much I was worried my dad would get mad but this worked!
C_P _Y Sweet!!!
Thanx bro it worked for me ;-) on my 5d MK2. got really worried why it suddenly wont turn on it dit give battery erron in the vieuwfinder only and on de lcd display but nothing on the large lcd. the cf card swap did the trick. many many thanx you saved my day and not to forget my camera. regards from the Netherlands> Aamir
thanks so much for the help, you just solved my issue ...... have you any idea WHY this happens to 5D's?
Hi I have similar problem but with my canon t3i my camera will turn on but the screen is black and only takes black pictures and when ever I try to take a picture this message pops up on the screen that's says
"err 30 shooting is not possible due to an error. Turn the camera off and on again or
re-install the battery" I have tried to turn the camera off and on again and I have also tried to re-install the battery but it still doesn't work, do you have any ideas on how I can make it work? (Sorry for the long message)
Good morning,
I replaced the display to a canon 5d mark 2, when reassembling it the on / off switch no longer went, I reassembled it, disconnected and reconnected the pins again and in reassembling it it did not turn on again, after repeating this procedure 3 times because every time I reassembled some key didn't work. I connected everything correctly, tried to change the memory card, batteries and lens but nothing, not showing signs of life. What can it be?
Help me please
The safest thing to do now is to take it to a Canon service location or use that repair cost to buy a new one.
geat ..really thank you so much.. it work with my 6d ..peace from algeria
Nice.
thanks for making this video,
I just had a huge scare with my sl2 (I know it's the cheapest canon but still...)
i just needed to take and put back in the battery a few times, I'm still not quite sure what the problem was, but it's working again. my tripod did fall over about 2 weeks ago, but it was a pretty soft landing. idk!
Holy shit. . . .it worked. I can't explain why, I was the biggest skeptic, but after borrowing cameras for 3 shoots this weekend, and researching having to buy new - I found this video, followed the steps, and I can't explain why it worked, it just did.
thanks dude , it worked on my canon 700d , thank goodness of u
Cool
I had installed Magic Lantern on my 5d Mk iii thinking I'd just killed it. This got it back on THANK YOUUUU!!!
Dude you just saved my life.....Thank you soooooo Much worked great..............
THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH. It worked like a charm. Really thought I messed up my camera
Would this work for a canon rebel xti ?
There's a small switch inside both the memory card door and the battery door. If your card door is slightly open or if your battery cover or battery grip isn't fully secured then the switch isn't closed and the camera simply won't turn on. Safe bet that it was the card door in this case.
Thanks a lot!!! It worked for 5d ii!!! Couldn't believe it! You made my day!
Thank you, John. Your video solved the problem.
No worries Steve Anchell. I'm happy that you are back in action.
Omg 9 years later and this helped me when I borrowed my friends 5d mark ii, literally thought I bricked it

This worked for me, and then I put in a different SD card and it now it won't turn on again. Do you have any idea what is causing this problem?
***** thanks for posting. Please repeat the steps without the CF card and a different lens. Let me know if that works.

rgexposures thanks for sharing your good news.
this actually work for me and save my life thank you very much
THANK YOU!!! Now, WHY did that work?
What would be the reason for this to happen? Could it be a camera circuit problem?
I can hardly believe it, but this worked! Thank you so much for sharing!
No worries. I'm glad it worked fro you.
Honestly did not expect this trick to work, but it did on my 7D! Thanks!
Samuel Verhaest Thanks for the update and I'm happy that it went well for your 7D.
I'm glad it worked for you my friend.

Great video!!!!!! Works perfectly. Thanks
I wonder if it will work with a Canon T5.
It worked for me, I didn’t change lens as I only have one. So I just removed the lens (and SD & batt) and put it back on and it worked! I spent so long borrowing my friend’s 800d for ages, but my baby’s back now! 😭
sir you are a god send!! I was flipping out thinking I ruined my camera
