You are why I love the internet: freedom of information. I have had my 7D for quite a while, and this problem cost me $250 just three years ago. This time, the bid was a minimum of $299 just to send to Canon for assessment. I figured it was worth a half hour to give your fix a shot - and it was exactly as you described. The little screw was out of its hole, I found it in the camera body, put it all back together and it works like a charm. One thing: two of the screws seem just a bit longer than the others - they are the ones from the sides of the body. Thank you so very much :)

Thank YOU. My 10 year old 7D started draining batteries last month and the displayed the "Cannot Communicate with Battery" error. This video provided both the exact cause and the solution. It took me about 20 minutes to fix it.

I've just sorted my Canon 7d following your instructions, the screw was missing from its proper location and was jammed down in the 'guts' of the camera, no doubt its location down there was giving me intermittent 'battery communication error' all back in its proper place now and the camera is working fine, thank you so much

Wow!!! This is why you gotta love youtube/internet. I mean I've had this problem for months, maybe over a year and I just thought it was this third party charger that I had bought. Sure enough I take the bottom off my 7D and low and behold the screw is missing. I fished it out, put it back in, and everything is hunky dory. Thanks for posting you've earned a subscriber and a like. Inspiring the DIY nation and sharing information. It's what it's all about, I'll come dive with ya one of these days.

Excellent! My 8 year old 7D developed this fault. Tried cleaning the contact and even threw a battery away thinking it was faulty. After resigning myself to the fact that it was going to be an expensive repair, I thought I would have a quick look on RUclips and see if anyone has a DIY fix. Thank you the missing screw was the fault on my 7D MkI too. Carefully recovered the screw and replaced it in the PCB, re-assembled the camera, and MAGIC it is working again. I was a bit concerned as it was wedged against the lower PCB, but fortunately it has not damaged the circuit. Canon should list this on their FAQ even if they advise to take it to a repair shop, as this seems to be a common fault! ***** Five Stars for you Blue H2o Cozumel

I bought my camera (used) a month ago. There was a little rattling noise when I shook it, and I thought 'o crap', but the camera worked fine...for a while. Eventually, the rattle went away, but every once in a while, it would do something flakey, like suggest a fresh battery was empty...but always intermittent problems that perpetuated the application of voodoo fixes, like thinking cleaning the contacts was helping or something. Then yesterday, I got the "cannot communicate with battery" message, which, because of the wording, led me to this video. I opened the camera up (prying the plastic was nerve-racking and that tab by the battery compartment - you really need to pay attention to it) and found the screw missing just as described...but I couldn't find the screw. I read through the comments until I realized that many other people had trouble finding the screw, but you answered one of them by saying "It's in there!" and someone else said they used their magnetic screwdriver to go on a fishing expedition, and so this gave me the confidence to just keep sticking the screwdriver (carefully) into various nooks and crannies, I essentially found the screw lodged against the little motor( is the motor magnetic?) approximately where your video shows you found yours. In summary, you were exactly right and my camera works. I hope your paypal account is still active. Thank you for posting this.

Thank you so much. I met that problem when i was visiting the Beauval park! Thank to a good friend i could take beautiful pictures but that was not with my 7D! Then, I and my husband watched your contribution... and decided to operate my 7D... it was impossible to me to let my 7D to Canon company a long time... without knowing the origin of the problem and spend much money! The most important problem we met was about how to open it.. In your video, we counted 6 + 2 screws and then we studied how to remove the top... the important thing is not to brake the piece (sorry i am a french people and my english is not very good!). Be quiet, make attention! Near the system of contact with the battery, there is a "L" and a little piece not to brake... we had to push up the piece without brake anything... finally, we succeeded to put the piece out, we saw that the screw was not there.... it was as indicated, in the bottom of the 7D... we could take it with a magnetic object... and now my 7D still works.... My question now....the origin of the problem was due to the luck of screw but why. That screw served to the mass contact? or that screw in the bottom of the 7D was making bad contacts? but in that case, that could'nt be permanent, and that could do destroying things in the 7D, isn't it?

This is amazing! I just bought a 7d on ebay that had this error code, 10 minutes later i had it fixed. Thanks so much for posting this video! The little screw was stuck to the magnet on the motor way down in there, what a pain it was to get it out!

Canon wanted me to mail them my camera before they would give me a repair quote. This is such a common problem with the 7Ds, you would think they would give people a break. My sister-in-law had the same problem with her 7D. My husband and I followed along with the video just fine. However, the screw was lodged inside and wouldn't shake out. Our tiny screwdriver wasn't magnetic. So I rubbed it on a refrigerator magnet to "magnetize" it and that worked like a charm. Camera is working great! Thank you!!!!

I just encountered this problem (late 2024), but only when using my battery grip. I found that cleaning the 13 little pins on the top part of the grip, as well as their contact points inside the camera's battery compartment using a pencil eraser fixed it for me. Hopefully this will help someone in the future.
Edit to add: After letting the camera sit for a few hours, the "unable to communicate with batter" error returned. It occurred to me to check the CR1616 button battery which was 100% dead. Replaced that and it's back to normal (again). Don't forget to check your button batteries folks.
Thanks for the vid! Saving for later in case the problems pops back up.

Bought a new battery, put it in the freezer (temporary fix, don't do that), 4 years into this saga and BAM! there was the screw loose under the board. I used 5 minute epoxy to hold the screw in place (just a dab on the threads). Put it all back together and camera is working like new! THANK YOU!

I did this procedure today and it seems to have solved the problem as camera is clearly communicating with the battery now. I have to be honest, removing that bottom part of the body was pretty scary. I did not have the plastic do-hickey that the author used to pry it out, but I found something that worked almost as well. Was so afraid of cracking or breaking something! Also, I found that one of the screws was longer than the others - the one that goes under the remote control port - so you have to remember where you need to put them back in. I will show my appreciation by making a PayPal donation soon. Thank you.

Brilliant - after testing two genuine batteries, and getting same 'can't communicate with battery' message, I - with some trepidation - followed your instructions to take apart my favorite camera. Staring inside for two minutes, I could see no wayward screw; until "There is was!" I saw it, got it out with needle nose pliers, re-installed, and all is well.

Thanks John Clark !

Good video, nice and concise. It was pretty difficult to get the bottom off, and once it was off I could see that the screw was missing but couldn't find it. After banging the camera around though it eventually dropped out. The only suggestion I would add is that it seems JIS screws were used, not phillips. One of the side screws was a bear to get out using a phillips screwdriver and I believe a JIS screwdriver would have made the job much easier.

  • @AtleBjanes
    @AtleBjanes 7 лет назад

Note there is another screw opposite side of the camera also that is missing when you get this error. I was able to locate the first screw as it had attached itself to a motor magnetically as shown in this video. I was not able to locate the other screw, but put in the first screw and that was enough to fix the issue, even with one missing screw. Thank you for posting! Paypal sent!

Greatest video. It nailed my problem. However, after taking apart the front cover and the back cover, shook and tapped it for about 20 min, still could not find the lose screw. I ended up using one of the body screw (the one under the skin of the hand grip next to the len mount), and it works! Thank you so much!

+Carrot762 I found my screw further inside the body, apparently there is something magnetic down there and it was stuck to that about 1 inch in. I had to use double side tape on a dentil probe to get it out.

Hi there, I have had this battery message come up this year, just by chance it was after updating the firmware. Canon said it was probably a PCB issue, so with the COVID-19 lock down we face I googled and tried your solution. Easy to do, and it worked first time - screw was magnetically held by the motor. Refitted and EOS7D is fully functioning again. Very many thanks for your video.

Wow, thanks for that walk through, what a life saver. This was bugging me for a while and came across this repair you guided. It was a little daunting getting the bottom cover off. Once open it tool a little while to locate the screw that had found it's way up inside the camera - I think coaxed there by I assume the magnetic attraction of the shutter motor... It took a bit of careful persuasion to get it out with a magnetized screwdriver but pretty much plain sailing from there. So relieved and indeed indebted to you, many thanks.

When I opened the plate I noticed the screw had loosed inside the camera. After closing it the problem and message kept persisting. THIS JUST WORKS !!! Not for the clumsy handed tech, but with a good jeweler's phillips screwdriver and some patience, very easy. I recommend the Husky HD-74502V driver avail at Home Depot for ~ $6.00. My best small item repair tool. Put a towel down so you don't lose any of the screws. Lay the screws out in the order you remove them. Don't remove that silly rubber cover next to the battery compartment. Thanks for the video. Shame on Canon for not 1. Quality control failure at the factory. 2. Not recalling the body for repairs. 3. Lying about the repair and charging the consumer to fix item 1.

Perfect video to show that tiny problem occring that problem.
In my case the screw was still in place. But it seems that I was able to tighten it a little bit more than it was.
After screwing the camera together it worked perfectly !!
I'll send you a small amount to your PayPal of course.

Show demais

Fixed! Took a couple of taps against the table before the screw dislodged from where ever it was hiding, couldn't see it at all when I took everything apart. Everything is working great now. BTW, we dive Coz quite often, love the island and the people! Check your PayPal acct!

Thank you very much! I had the exact same issue on my 5 year old EOS 7d back last summer in the midst of my Canada holiday. ;-) I always assumed that some contacts were dirty and needed cleaning. Today I saw your video and gave it a try - bingo! The screw was even at exactly the same position... :-D You made my day. Thank you and all the best!

looking at another video I saw there should be another screw on the opposite part where you place the missing screw. I don't know if the lack of this screw causes any malfunction though.

I know this vid goes back to 2014 but if you're still listening, I tried your fix. I found the screw in question was intact! Not fallen out or even loose. But while the bottom plate was put back on, but not screwed in, I tested the fix and it was fine. Battery showed up like it should. Then I put the screws back in and wham - it showed "cannot communicate" again. What else have you got for a fix since 2014? (Thanks for the video - it helped me dis and reassemble the camera)👍

    THANK YOU! Another happy viewer!
Getting the screw out was a pain as it was stuck on the magnetic motor inside the camera body.
Had to resolve to bumping the camera "a bit" ( less than 100 times ) against the floor. Hard, HArDer. HARDER!, so I might have broken something else in there by now :)
    Time will show.
When the screw finally made it out, I didn't notice and actually hit it into the floor so the head was the only visible part of it. Had to unscrew it from the flooring.
So, AF still works, and not to many spare parts left after the procedure :)
    Cheers!

Thanks. Opened up the camera as you suggested, screw had fallen out and was lodged up beside that cylinder. Easily recovered then rescrewed and battery indicator now working. I have had issues with an intermittent mirror lock up, so will carefully observe to see if that issue has likewise been sorted.
