My dad collects arcade machines because he likes playing them, but also because he likes to collect them. I'm glad for that fact because it really showed me how deep this hobby/fandom can go. Seriously. If you don't know much about arcade machines... the whole rabbit hole goes waaaaay deeper than you probably think. Good thing channels like Game Sack devote time to preserving these works of art.

You know, on Choplifter you can eject the hostages from your helicopter after you've been hit. They don't have to all die.
Just keep pressing the attack button after you're hit and they'll parachute out one by one.
You can get about 3 or 4 of them out before you crash depending on your altitude when you take the hit.

Nice trick it worked, never knew that before, in the master system version the hostages fly away in little jets and in the NES version the hostages jump out with little parachutes just like in the Arcade version except you don't use the attack button to do that you use the button that changes the chopper's direction, nice parallax scrolling in both versions though.

The reason for the labels on your Ghouls ‘n Ghosts pcb is that is was converted from either a SF II Champion Edition or Hyper Fighting pcb using modified roms to work on those later CPS-1 boards. It was a much more affordable solution than buying an original early CPS-1 Ghouls ‘n Ghosts pcb since the SF2 pcbs are far more common.

Great video, dunno how I managed to miss this one seeing as I love me some arcade action. I got around 130 boards and 39 cabs now so you got a bit of catching up to do. It did help starting collecting in the mid-90s though, prices in the last few years specifically have gone crazy. I blame these bloody youtubers for showing people that they can play arcade games at home!! Funny thing is, EDGE magazine issue 3 waaaay back in 1993 did a feature on superguns and how you COULD play arcade games at home, and that was my start. Picked up a supergun and Bubble Bobble. Board still works and is a very treasured possession.

Great episode, Joe! I love arcade collecting! I started with a Neo Geo MVS 4 slot machine at 14 and the bug bit me. Now 7 years later, I have 9 machines and over 60 PCBs. Arcade gaming and racing games are my biggest passions in gaming, so naturally I love arcade racers. Apparently I'm the sole owner of a Konami Racing Jam Super Deluxe machine and it's my pride and joy. Recently the Konami Cobra hardware has been acting up, but emulation doesn't work in MAME so it's the real deal or nothing else. Electrical issues can be annoying, but that's part of the whole, raw experience of authentic arcade gaming. Cheers!

Think there’s a kick harness in the package as well. I got, like, 5 different games, but one of the more interesting one is the puzzle game “Dancing Eyes” by Namco. It’s marketed as one of those naughty games where you undress girls to see them in their underwear, but that’s only for the first two stages. Then it starts getting into weird stuff, like uncovering a dancing cow from a giant milk bottle and the final boss is the lead developers head inside a pineapple. Lots of fun!

Cool vid, and nice to see the collection. Got four full-sized cabs myself, ranging from good-to-great condition. Killer Instinct, Tekken Tag Tournament, Shinobi (of course), and Mortal Kombat II.
Had them for years, so they didn't cost me an arm and a leg, though they weren't exactly dirt cheap either. I scooped them up back when arcades were gasping their dying breath. That's about the extent of my arcade collection though.

Not kidding either, its awesome I can see an entire setup like this cause Id probably never see it in person. I really like and appreciate that in addition to the coolness of collecting, you are preserving history. Especially for unique stuff like neo geo, TG16, arcade games, etc.

The chips had their markings scratched off as an anti-copying measure to make it harder for people to reverse engineer and recreate bootleg copies of the board. Of course, it probably wouldn't stop someone who is very determined, but it would make it harder at least.

Yeah, if I were independently wealthy I'd love to build my own personal arcade. Of course then you have to worry about maintaining these old machines, and cost of powering these old machines. I think MAME/emulation cabinets are a good middle-ground, the emulation is good enough for most people and it's far less hassle.

A lot of Arcade companies scratched off the markings on the chips so they would be harder to bootleg. In other cases (like CAVE who used IGS chips for their games), they were embarrassed about using Taiwan-based chips.

      Mahoujanai no they didn’t

    • @Mahoujanai
      @Mahoujanai 4 года назад +1

@@techguyml No they didn't what? In the early days a lot of games had off the shelf parts, so they just scratched off the markings on the chip so it give them a little more time of having the game in the arcade without worry about it being bootlegged. Then in the late 80s and the 90s many games had their custom chip markings scratched off (in this case of ganbare gonta 2) it was a Mitchell game, but it used Data East chips. Hard to say why they did this, but it was done. There are even some instances of game companies scratching off just the production date of the chip because they didn't want people to know they used old chips.

The best and easiest way to play arcade games at home is with the MiSTer FPGA. It's true, cycle-accurate FPGA hardware emulation at its finest. The library of arcade games and consoles is continuously growing thanks the big community developing on it. You can't go wrong with a MiSTer.

Last year in Japan I went to some stores in Akihabara which had a lot of arcade boards up for sale. They were on display and I felt like a kid in a toy store... even if I had the money, that 23 hour flight to return home could have been a bit rough for any board. Damn, good collection you got there.
