When I was a kid, I got a flyer in the mail for an arcade auction. I begged my dad to take me. We got there, and of course, everything was going to be pricey. The first item up for bid was an EnduroRacer cab. Nobody was bidding. After a couple minutes, the auctioneer finally said "someone make an offer"! My dad bid $10..... ...and EnduroRacer is still in my garage.
I miss them too... I still have two fully operational drive-in theaters in my area, but there hasn't been a real arcade up here since... damn. I don't even remember... 2000? 2001?
@@TXFDA you dam straight cause a lot of these games aren’t even in arcades anymore and the chances of finding a place that has it I’m sure is very rare. Already got all the arcade games downloaded I’ve been wanting to play.
The Trash skit put a smile on my face. There is just some kind of child like quaility with the way Dave delivered it. It brought me back to my childhood.
Oh yeah, I remember the NES "Strider"; in 6th grade I slept over this one kid's house the night his mom took four of us to the mall. We played the arcade version at the mall, then stayed up all night with the NES version.
Regarding Enduro Racer for the SMS: 1. Reaching 99 damage doesn't instantly end your game, but makes the countdown timer a lot faster. 2. Damage can be repaired by buying the bottom three items at the store. IIRC they have a random chance of being twice as effective. 3. If you do a wheelie right before a jump, it will not slow you down.
Actually, the NES version of Strider was not meant to be a port of the arcade version. When Strider first came out, it was meant to be released in three forms - the arcade version, a manga, and an NES game based on the manga. The deal between Capcom and Motomiya Kikaku - the owner of the Strider property - fell through for some reason. So, the comic didn't make it stateside, and the Famicom version that was being developed got cancelled. This is also why, despite how kickass Strider Hiryu is as a concept, he has had such a limited run. Outside of his appearance in Marvel vs Capcom, his games number less than half a dozen. Yes, I AM a bit of a Strider geek!
In Bionic Commando for NES, you can actually get continues on the overhead stages. You can earn up to 9 but you can always trick the system and keep getting Continues.
That Bionic commando sound effect sounds like it's worth SIX MILLION DOLLARS!!! also, surprised to see no mention of Michael Jacksons Moonwalker on this show!
Great video! Interesting; in a way it seems like Enduro Racer for the Master System is what you would get if you turned the obstacle course in Paper Boy into its own game. -Sean
You remember how older cabinets would be reduced down to one quarter after a while? I remember Space Ace and Dragon's Lair stayed expensive until I stopped going to arcades in the late 90's for some reason. Maybe it was just in my area? It was just too unreasonably expensive when I could stay on fighting games or beat em ups for a tenth of the price.
Bionic Commando on the NES is supposed to be the sequel to the arcade game, not a remake. The character in the arcade game is Super Joe (who you rescue in the NES game), the character in the NES version is "Captain Commando," (later renamed "Rad Spencer"). Basically, the official progression is: Commando -> Bionic Commando (arcade) -> Bionic Commando (NES) -> Captain Commando (arcade)
I came here to say the same thing, and that Bionic Commando for every other 1980's platform is pretty much the same as the arcade. The franchise is so convoluted in it's cannon once you factor in the "Rearmed" games, Mercs, and Wolf Of The Battlefield.
Yeah, it took me a few years to figure out that the character in the NES game was Captain Commando (of the arcade beat-em-up game, "Captain Commando") too -- I believe it is, in fact, supposed to be his origin story. Let me explain that: In the NES game, the main character (who has bionic implants in his arm) is only ever referred to as "Captain" and never as "Rad Spencer." The main character was never referred to by any other name in the instruction booklet, the game, or any of the marketing materials. "Rad Spencer" (the name that has come to be associated with the character) didn't appear until the Game Boy version of the game, which is really its own continuity and not associated with any other version of the game (the Game Boy Color "Bionic Commando: Elite Force" was entirely different still). By the way, the original Game Boy version is incredibly fun in its own right and should be played by any fan of the series (the Game Boy Color version, not so much). Anyway, so the character is only referred to as "Captain," and is the titular character in the title (the Bionic Commando"), so it only makes sense that this character went on to become "Captain Commando." Plus, there's really a lot of overlap in the designs between the characters in the NES game and the Captain Commando arcade game: Though differently-colored, both have spiky hair, both have a penchant for wearing sunglasses, both have bionic arms, both are "Captains," and both are set in futuristic settings. Now, the NES game is clearly a torch being passed from Super Joe (Capcom's original video game hero) to the new hero, which could only be Capcom's new golden boy (okay, not Mega Man, but you know what I mean). Joe's words at the end of the game are clearly meant to intone that "The Captain" went on to do great things (like becoming a premiere world-saving superhero). So, every time you pick up an NES instruction booklet and see that weird blonde guy with twin machine guns and a disco medallion telling you to buy Capcom games, that's the guy from Bionic Commando. (Note: This version of the character was in instruction booklets for years before any of the Bionic Commando games existed). Well, I just thought it was time to tell the whole story. I hope this story will be told for a long time.
The sound of the bionic woman using her superpowers in the Bionic Commando bit warmed my heart and cracked me up at the same time :D Love your show! Thanks for another awesome episode!
There was alot of bad arcade ports back in those days. They became more faithful as we approached the PSX and Dreamcast eras. Then arcades died as the home consoles became way more powerful than arcades. I remember being very disappointed with double dragon for nes. It blew me away in arcades and the nes version was a completely different game. Actually really enjoyed it for what it was, but it was nothing like the arcade. Nes had alot of games that were BETTER than the arcade versions. They had less graphical power but alot of them played better , had more levels are were completely redone into a better game. Rygar and Bionic Commando barely resemble the arcade versions on NES and are way better in my opinion. Jackal is very different and seems better. Gyruss added bosses on nes though the arcade version I found a good deal harder. Karnov is a freakshow challenge wise in the arcade. Having beat that and the nes versions, the nes version felt way more balanced and enjoyable. Double Dragon 2 on nes is very different as well and WAY better than the arcade version in my opinion. Never liked the second double dragon in arcades. Prior to PSX , the genesis actually came really close to the arcade versions with games like Ghouls n ghosts, Strider, Altered Beast, Mercs and many more. Would have loved to have an x68000 back then but didnt know about it. Great videos as always
Actually, the Philips CD-i version predated the Sega CD and 3DO versions and blew them. both out of the water. Dragon's Lair 1 & 2, Space Ace, 7th Guest, Mad Dog McCree Who shot Johnny Rock, and a few others saw their best ports on the CD-i.
The Robocop Arcade is literally a masterpiece, needs a lot of time of getting good at it and eventually being able to actually enjoy it and realize how good it is. Also the music is incredible. This used to be a competitive game at the time by the way.
Great episode as always! By the way, you can actually get as many continues as you want in Bionic Commando by collecting the eagle icons dropped by certain enemies in the over head stages. Took me several years before I figured that out since I always tried to avoid the overhead stages back in the day..
enduro racer in the arcade had handlebars that you rev'd up like a real motorbike and you would pull up on the handlebars for the jumps. emulation does a disservice in this case.
Also mame don't exactly have good standard gamma settings for the system 16 games. To be more precise, arcade monitors had a wonky gamma and the games had to adjust to that on their palettes, and the mame adjusts don't take it into account, making very washed out colors.

The arcade version is by far the superior version of Moonwalker. I was pretty disappointed to fire up my Genesis and get a side-scroller, I loved the arcade.
Nah. I like the Sega Genesis game all right, but Michael's combat moves are poorly thought out, and the game really needs some randomization in Katy locations to make it replayable. Meanwhile, the arcade Moonwalker is an awesome hybrid shooter/beat-em up. I'd take it over the console port any day, but they're both good games. It's just that the arcade original is a better realized game than the console one.
To be slightly pedantic, Strider for NES wasn't actually a port, it was developed simultaneously with the arcade game. Great episode, though, and I really love that a lot of the NES ports like Rygar, Bionic Commando, and Strider went in an exploratory direction. Much more fun overall, in my opinion. The arcade version followed a completely different story. Something like that. Glad you enjoyed the game though! It's tough but pretty fun. #FuckEnduroRacer
To the best of my knowledge Manga, Arcade game and NES game were developed in parallel. One of the earlier multi channel marketing pushes. Each developed independently, hence the focus on the strength of the NES, not a straight arcade port.
I remember growing up always wanting to play/own the arcade and genesis versions of Strider. Truth is, after playing all three versions I find the NES version to be by far my favorite. The graphics are beautiful in the arcade version, however gameplay is more engaging and feels more rewarding as you progress in the NES version.
Aside from story, I don't think Capcom thought they could accurately port the game on the NES hardware. Given how sluggish and lacking the Master System version was, probably a good call.
How about Rollergames? The arcade version was similar to the TV show in a battle style arena race. The NES version was a platformer that almost seemed like a Double Dragon clone. The NES version is one of my all time favourite NES titles
Killer Instinct was actually a pretty solid port (I'm assuming you're referring to the SNES version), all things considered. When you take into account the CPU/RAM/cart storage etc. of the SNES it's amazing that it carried over as well as it did. All the gameplay and moves etc. are intact, and the pre-rendered characters and backgrounds look pretty good. The general look/feel of the arcade is preserved (albeit with smaller sprites, no 3D backgrounds etc.).
Another fun episode. Loved the cartridge transitions in this one. Very funny. Also, the 6 Million Dollar Man sound effect for Bionic Commando was great. Keep up the great work guys!
The PlayStation didn't have the hardware capacity to do faithful adaptations of X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, or Marvel vs Capcom. If you want arcade perfect ports of the first two you need a Sega Saturn and an Action Replay card. MvC was better on the Dreamcast.
That Saturn didn't do well, but people still owned. Hell, I have one for some of the gems on it, like Shining the Holy Ark. I even have X-Men vs Street Fighter on Saturn.
Good idea for a episode. BUT! Why you only show the NES versions at times when there are actually more versions. Just to see what home port came closer. like Strider, that came to multiple consoles. It just feels like a missed opportunity to show of more games. I for one like to see more then just 2 versions. Just for the fun of it. List of Strider ports. So kinda sad you only choose one. Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64. DOS PlayStation, Sega Genesis Sega Master System, Sharp X68000, TurboGrafx CD, Virtual Console, Wii, ZX Spectrum Edite. I miss understood the idea behind this episode. So my comment dont don't fit to well. Sorry about that. :)
Because the name of the episode is "Unfaithful Arcade Ports", so if they showed arcade ports that were closer to the original, that would kind of defeat the point, wouldn't it?
Yellowblanka Good point. I can see what you mean. Still very few of the old homeports of Arcade games where close back then. Another idea for a episode could be close to perfect arcade ports, or improved arcade ports. Like the original Soul Calibur.
Thumbs down. I watched the video expecting sexy arcade ports acting all naughty and unfaithful, maybe getting played by multiple consoles, ended up with a stupid arcade-home version comparison video
Love the retro games myself most probably at that age now I'm a Sega fan boy myself but still play Nintendo games to watching your channel reminds me of myself and my friend when we were teenagers playing the arcades in the video store I do miss them keep the good work up guys

Dragons Lair was one of my favorite arcade games, and it wasn't even a game really. Around 2001 I bought a DVD version that played on my DVD player with a standard TV remote.
"I never gave up and eventually mastered it. And you can too!" I don't know if Dave does the infomercial host lines on purpose, but I love it. And Joe complaining about bad Robocop taste in his mouth? Disgusting. "Does it hurt? Does it huuurt?"
Captain Commando on SNES is a good example of an unfaithful port. No weapons, no mechs, censorship, normally 3 enemies max on screen, redesigned bosses, changed enemy a.i., plays slower, missing music, etc.
Guys, Robocop spent 5 years in the top 5 rated rated arcade games. If that isn't top tier then I personally don't know what is. Thanks for all your efforts, love the show and it is much appreciated.

I had no idea Strider was even based on a manga series.
Hell yeah, new Game Sack! Always awesome.
Wow you came up with another Topic that i didnt expected! Love you guys since you started this great channel! Please never quit!
13:15 "Causes you to explode and die....which eats a lot of time up off the clock"
hahahahaha
Where is the Intellivision episode?
How about Rollergames? The arcade version was similar to the TV show in a battle style arena race. The NES version was a platformer that almost seemed like a Double Dragon clone. The NES version is one of my all time favourite NES titles
Space Ace for part 2 of Unfaithful Arcade Ports.
"You should head right down to your local arcade and try it"... If it was 1993 and arcades still existed within 100 miles I'd do it.
Bad Dudes. Killer Instinct
Its a shame Killer Instinct never got a proper release :(
Killer Instinct was actually a pretty solid port (I'm assuming you're referring to the SNES version), all things considered.
Yellowblanka I agree. Sure it isn't the best port but far from the worst too. The only clear issue it has over the arcade is it plays somewhat slower
I'd mention Bad Dudes, but that's a way better port than turtles (TMNT).
Another fun episode. Loved the cartridge transitions in this one. Very funny. Also, the 6 Million Dollar Man sound effect for Bionic Commando was great. Keep up the great work guys!
My wife is unfaithful, can you do a video on her?
I pumped a fuck tonne of quarters into her, but the home version sucked.
Bob Marley Lol 😂
There's quite a few videos with her in them.
Hope u got to watch atlease lol
She munched on my quarters last night.
Oh give me a break! Bionic Commando on the NES is one of the greatest games ever made! It's still enjoyable today
The NES Dargon's Lair is as bad as Hylide... =(
Fun video ! :D Enjoyed it !
I really think Marvel vs. Capcom is unfaithful to the arcade, at least in terms of the PlayStation version
KingdomHeartsZYX Anything 2D fighting that was in the arcade is unfaithful (for the worst) on ps1.
But nobody really owned a Saturn in the US...
OUCH! i find that comment offensive Clay3613, there were some of us who did, including my younger brother, who was a teenager at the time.
That Saturn didn't do well, but people still owned. Hell, I have one for some of the gems on it, like Shining the Holy Ark. I even have X-Men vs Street Fighter on Saturn.
1:09 Ah, I see someone was wise enough to cut that useless fourth lead on the 10nes lockout chip. Well done.
Amiga,
Amstrad CPC,
Atari ST,
Commodore 64.
DOS
PlayStation,
Sega Genesis
Sega Master System,
Sharp X68000,
TurboGrafx CD,
Virtual Console, Wii,
ZX Spectrum
Edite. I miss understood the idea behind this episode. So my comment dont don't fit to well. Sorry about that. :)
Because the name of the episode is "Unfaithful Arcade Ports", so if they showed arcade ports that were closer to the original, that would kind of defeat the point, wouldn't it?
Yellowblanka
Good point. I can see what you mean. Still very few of the old homeports of Arcade games where close back then.
Another idea for a episode could be close to perfect arcade ports, or improved arcade ports. Like the original Soul Calibur.
If it's a whole different game then it's not a port so the premise doesn't apply.
Yes! Love that you guys used some Persona 5 music in the intermission! Such a great game so far!
if you would have thrown in greendog at the end, he would have changed his mind
Awesome reviews, great editing! Thanks, guys!
How come we don't see much of that Asian girl anymore?
kakashi101able she was in last episode.
kakashi101able Either you didn't watch or you weren't paying attention to the last episode.
She probably had a fit after playing those lightgun games in the last episode.
I moved to Fresno, CA. No more appearances unless it's old footage.
Ahem, we like to say FresYES.
Why are dogs attacking RoboCop?
.... You've never been to Detroit, huh?
9:08
I also try to "climax at just the right moment to add to the feeling of grandeur"... my girlfriend doesn't seem to be impressed , though.
Bad Dudes (NES) Data East is poopy.
Bad Dudes is bad, dude?
god bless gamesack, because you guy keep me company when I work at 3 am.
Hey Dave, where is the girl from the last episode? Jen? Have you send her back? If yes, did you get any refund?
Pas Mater thats rude. your mother would be ashamed.
Pas Mater.. This comment shows a full lack of understanding. Jen is with Joe not Dave ( D'oh ! ). That and Jen is a beautiful person. I'll have you know.
PS: Did you mother drop you on your head as a kid, as your grammar is as bad as your comment. This coming from a Dyslexic .....
MOM! The people on RUclips are mean to me again :(
She no love him rong time anymore.
The Pumpking King I moved to Fresno, CA. Won't be appearing anymore.
the taking-out-the-trash bit had me cracking up
persona 5 boss battle song nice!
But you can if you try!!!
“All they did is flicker” this is hilarious!!!
+100 respect for actually having the sack to play Dragons Lair on the NES for more than 10 minutes.
Bionic Commando for the NES remains one of my all time favorite games. Got it for my birthday as a kid and loved the hell out of it.
Capcom's Willow. Changed completely from an action platformer to an action RPG.
The Coleco tabletop arcades were the best arcade cabinet/machines ever. I particularly loved Snoopy and Popeye.
