    Thanks! I've been wondering where to start with Magic lore for quite a while now. Glad to learn the answer is, "don't".

    Book recs:
    - The Brothers' War, by Jeff Grubb. A good time to pick it up what with a(nother) set dedicated to it.
    - The Ice Age trilogy, also by Jeff Grubb. Comparatively self-contained and a good exploration of how the five-colour magic system is understood diegetically.
    - The Thran, by J. Robert King. In many ways a prologue for many of the original concepts of Magic, and if you want Phyrexian deep lore, you got it here.
    - Chainer's Torment, by Scott McGough. The middle book of the Odyssey trilogy, but also a tight character piece showing the rise and fall of an aspiring dementia summoner, with the best line I remember from magic lore: "My name is Skellum, and I wear a silly hat."

    Will admit, Artifacts Cycle 1 and 2 are really good reads, the books are The Thran and The Brothers War in Cycle 1. Then Planeswalkers, Time Streams and Bloodlines in Cycle 2. and aside from The Thran, it's mostly about Urza

      The Thran isn't that well written, but it's s good story. Brothers War is so much better.

    There are few stories that you missed:
    1.the" Kamigawa Vignettes" which are not available on the mothership but can still be found on the internet archive and you can find the links to them on the wiki, they are not relevant to any plot but are the inspiration to most of the sagas in Neon Dynasty and I personally very enjoyed reading them.
    2. "Children of the nameless" by Brandon Sanderson it was supposed to be free but got removed from the mothership (it's still available in some websites though) it's a very good book that won't require any knowledge on magic's story and setting up things that will probably get more important in the far future
    3."The Gathering Storm" the prequel to war of the spark and it's honestly a nice book but might not worth your time because of how bad war of the spark novella's are
    4. there were also short stories releasing between 2006-2012 under the column "savor the flavor" they are not important to the larger magic story but have some nice stories
    5. For every set since Lorwyn there is a Planeswalker's guide which isn't a real story but it helps a lot to understand it

    I guess I'm old school, but I miss getting books in the fat packs... Nothing like a dead tattooed tree carcass to get the imagination going to know the lore behind the cardboard! I own 37 mtg books so far, and I've a found a few of the older ones in used books shops and thrift stores, some in great condition for only $2 to $5! Now its just a fun quest to finish out my collection without breaking the bank. Darn you Pokemon at young age fueling my addiction to collect things!

    This was a very good video, and I agree that Khans of Tarkir is probably a great place to start, but I feel like I should ask: Why did you not enjoy In the Teeth of Akoum? I rather enjoyed that one, especially Sorin's particular brand of trollery throughout.

    It says they started online short stories. Does this give all the groundwork for future publications and the whole story? Or do you still have to be familiar with previous books?

    • @FishMTG

      You don’t but it helps. I cover the few things you have to know to start from Khans or Zendikar.

    • @seeess925
      @seeess925 Год назад +1

      @@FishMTG Thanks But I'm still a bit confused. So there's that list of Magic stories that start with Odric in Innistrad. Does everything start from there and get fleshed out as the story goes? Like learning about all the settings and getting introduced to all the characters and their backstories.
      Is there like a more detailed summary of the story leading up to current storyline?
      As I understand it, Dominaria is like the central setting and plane. Everything starts off from there. I guess there was an invasion from phyrexia. And I think a planeswalker Karen defeated the boss. But he got a dormant symbiotic injection. So personal plane got infected and consumed. And turned into Mirroden. So I guess phyrexians came back. I honestly don't really know.

      @FishMTG  Год назад

      @@seeess925 short answer: no.
      Long answer: the only way to get the entire story is to read the entire story. This is clearly unfeasible. So you can kind of just jump in wherever. The best places to jump in are Khans or Zendikar. You can find story recaps all over RUclips for various plots or just skip them entirely and take the stories at their face value

    Basically after khans the story just fucking sucked. Before there was sort of a focus. With urza it was the phyrexians and domineria, you also had side things like loweryn and Alara which were kinda self contained. But it's like after khans they did kind of a soft reboot in orgins and it seemed their goal was to do another urza saga but against nicol bolas who has been a scheming background character mostly but then they decided let's throw in the eldrazi plot too and it became sort of a shit show.
    If I was writing things it would go something like Elspeth koth and Ajani are dealing with the new phrexians. Keep them separate from Jace and his story for now because the phyrexians are a more pressing issue than nicol bolas and his not really all that threatening schemes. Seriously I think a big mistake was mixing these characters which then scrambled their stories, like they both could have been going on near or around the same time as each other and I'm not saying evil dragon wasn't a threat but it seemed like they neglected one issue (phyrexians) and now we got another bad story because wotc feels the need to burn through the story for some reason, I guess to focus back on the eldrazi which is still unresolved or to copy the avengers and Disney star wars some more
    Hire some fucking writers wotc
